During the twentieth century scholarly attention has turned increasingly to Severian of Gabala with new attributions, editions, and commentaries. Many researchers have contributed to this dramatic growth, but three in particular have been in the forefront: J. Zellinger with his Genesishomilien and Studien, H. D. Altendorf with his Untersuchungen, and S. J. Voicu with his many contributions culminating in his magisterial article on Severian in the Dictionnaire de spiritualité, We have reached the point where an index to Severian's scriptural references may be of considerable help to researchers in identifying homilies referred to in other homilies, in determining the authorship of homilies that might be attributed to Severian, and in gaining a better general understanding of Severian's thought and the tradition in which he worked.

We know the events of only five or six years in the life of Severian of Gabala, from A.D. 398 or 399 to 404. We are told that Severian was Syrian by birth and spoke Greek with a Syriac accent. His brother bishop and friend Antiochus of Ptolemais went to Constantinople, probably very soon after Chrysostom's episcopal consecration on 15 December 397 or 26 February 398, and earned a great deal of money preaching. Severian decided to follow his friend's example and went to the imperial capital in 398 or 399 to make his fortune. He was well received by Chrysostom; his preaching was evidently a great success, and he became known to many in high office as well as to the emperor Arcadius and the empress Eudoxia.

The organization of the living space in the Romenska culture part of Vodyane hill-fort in Zmiiv district of Khakiv oblast is analyzed in the paper. The hill-fort occupies the edge of plateau and a high cape of the right bank of Uda River; it existed during two periods: the Early Iron Age — mid. 5th—4th cent. BC (the forest-steppe culture of Sсythian Age) and Early Middle Ages — the Romenska archaeological culture. In the latter period only the northern part of the site was inhabited (0,5 ha). The Severian neighboring community lived here for 50—60 years (within the 10th — beginning of 11th centuries). A total of 11 dwellings, 2 household buildings, 3 open heating systems (cookhouses), vault, 6 household pits (one of which was used for food storing) were discovered on the hill-fort. In the Severian time the hill-fort was built by rows/lines of houses from the southern east to the northern west with the consideration of the topographic level of each separate row. Three building lines are watched and the southern one was probably the earliest. First researchers recorded the entrance to the hill-fort on the west edge of the cape with a rampart. The absence of objects and, practically, of cultural layer in the south-western corner of the yard and along the considerable part of the western edge of the cape provide an opportunity to offer the organization of the living space of the settlement. From the entrance to the hill-fort, the road ran along the western edge of the cape, and the passes between rows of houses were located to the south from this road. At least 6 homesteads stand out on the hill-fort. 3 more homesteads can be defined based on the presence of cavities on the site surface. It points to the fact that the organization of the living space on Vodyane hill-fort in the end of the 1st millennium is defined by linear character (by rows) with elements of homestead building. It corresponds to the late period of the Severians’ development, when clan community was replaced by neighboring one.

The Greek church of southern Italy and Sicily commemorated the temptation of Jesus on the first Sunday of Lent. Homiliaries for the liturgical year presented one or both of two homilies attributed to John Chrysostom, ‘΄ Hλι ος μὲ ν(PG 61, 683–88) and ‘Eξλθεν ò κύριος (CPG 4906). The former is now known to be a composite homily drawn from three homilies of Nestorius edited by Nau. The latter, as will be maintained later, is by Severian of Gabala.

Issues considers the emerging of East Slavic cities is one of the main challenges for contemporary Medieval studies. This challenge refers mainly to Polians, Drevlians, Severians and other tribes and tribal unions which are mentioned in some of Kyiv Rus manuscripts. The paper deals with the description of localization and finding in Chernihiv city the artifacts defined as the ones belonging to Romenska culture, which, in historical studies, identified as Severians (who was mentioned by Primary Chronicle). Some scholars (e. g. P. Tolochko), accept the hypothesis of Slavs (from Primary Chronicle) having had the cities. The others (e. g. Yu. Yu. Morgunov) are skeptical to this claim. Some historians (namely, A. V. Kuza) debate on series of material evidences — the empirical facts referring to some of inhabited localities which used to be Old Rus city of the period of feudal period. However, the major part of Severian centers showed no differences from other Old Rus centers, and their socio-topographical components looked in a similar way — mainly represented by the nexus of dytynets and posad. This is the core of skeptical theory, who, however, forget about early Slavonic and Kyiv Rus cities and centers are urban organisms existed not synchronically but diachronically — in the two different epochs: the former existed in times of prehistoric societies collapse, while the latter may be considered as «epiphenomenon» of early Slavonic centers, which inherits them culturally. Some Severians centers (such as Lubech, Snovsk or Radychiv) exceeded by fortifications area even some Old Rus cities. Severians tended to choose high terraces as dwelling places, which is exemplified by Novgorod-Siverskiy, Snovsk, Lubech and in Chernihiv particularly.

This article re-examines the attention scholars have given to the origins of monoergenism and monotheletism and proposes a rebuttal to the positions of J. Tannous who, in an article in Dumbarton Oaks Papers in 2014, holds that these doctrines represented in Syro/Palestine certain “regional doctrinal hegemonies, at least among Chalcedonian communities, and were not artificial concoctions”. For the author, on the other hand, the episcopal sees in these regions had to have been for the most part in the hands of monophysites, without in any way excluding the possibility that there were also Chalcedonian bishops and communities as well, as in the case of Abraham of Rusafa. Thus, for the Author, monoenergism and monotheletism, from an epistemological and theological point of view, were the last glimmer of Apollinarism which was continually re-emerging from the ashes and given a new life by Severian monophysitism.

Abstract The anti-Monophysitic anonymous treatise On the common nature and the Trinity was written in the 550-560s for the educational purposes in philosophy and theology. Therefore, its content was perceived in those days as something certainly traditional. It reflects theological discussions of its time, thus making feel the degree of complication of the current theological situation and the extent of mutual comprehension between the rival parties. The anonymous author normally keeps himself within the conceptual language of the late Neoplatonism, especially the school of Ammonius of Alexandria known by its interest to peripatetic instruments. The author himself is a Chalcedonian. When rejecting both “Nestorian” and “Severian” Christologies, he claims that the human nature became a constitutive element of the hypostasis of Christ (consisting of two common natures) and by no means an independent hypostasis. There are some similarities with the teaching of Leontius of Byzantium’s Against the Nestorians and the Eutychians and Solution of the Syllogisms of Severus, whereas the present author is much more succinct, and his exposition is simplified. For instance, unlike Leontius of Byzantium, he does not distinguish the contexts, where the notions of nature and substance could be used differently; he does not state explicitly that the human nature within the hypostasis of Christ is the common nature and not a particular nature. The latter term is used but never explained. The treatise is a curious witness of the relevance of an intra-Monophysite controversy for Chalcedonites.

The article draws on previously unknown documents from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts to study structure and size of the Ukrainian army under command of I. Zolotarenko, which participated in the Russo-Polish war of 1654-1655. This war with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was an important event in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, and the first success of a joint Ukrainian-Russian military action in the early modern period. Contrary to the prevailing opinion of the historiography, registers on pay distribution preserved in the ‘Little Russia affairs’ fond allow to assert that I. Zolotarenko’s army numbered 18,000 in enlisted ranks (not counting starshinas); it was divided in 6 regiments and included in addition to registered Cossacks, volunteer Cossacks, hajduks, and German mercenaries. Apropos, this refutes the prevailing assertion that the Zaporozhian Host enlisted no foreign mercenaries. The author also concludes that there was a good reason for Zolotarenko to call himself ‘Severian Hetman.’ He created a kind of ‘superstructure’ over the regiments participating in the campaign, which included army (but not regiment) officers and his own ‘court.’ The documents in question give a sense of how the Ukrainian Hetmanate organized its military campaigns under the direction of specially appointed hetmans. Article also refutes the opinion of modern Ukrainian historians that while administering the oath of regiments in February 1654, the tsar's representatives mechanically transferred whole paragraphs from Cossack registers. In fact, oath books’ structure was fundamentally different from that of Cossack registers. The article also expounds the changes in administrative structure of the hetmanship occurred in 1654. Since the register of I. Zolotarenko's troops is the third list of registered Cossacks known to historians, it is obviously worth publishing. Moreover, the troops’ structure of the Ukrainian hetmanate dovetailed its administrative-territorial division, which underlay all its executive and judicial structures.

Abstract. An examination is made of the true return periods associated with certain types of composite indices for the rareness of events. In particular, return periods are evaluated separately for several different ways of describing how bad an event was, and the composite index, or apparent return period, is defined as the largest of these component return periods. Such apparent return periods give an incorrect indication of how often a larger value for the composite index will occur. Simulations are used to study the relationship between the true and apparent return periods for some simple cases, and an assessment is made of the extent of the error made if the apparent return period is used directly. A simple practical procedure is described for dealing with real datasets without model-fitting, and this is assessed using further simulations. An example is given relating to a possible flood situation where a composite index is constructed as the largest of the return periods of high rainfall-accumulations over a number of durations. This article is divided into four sections. In the first, Fr. Arkadiusz Baron describes shortly the reception of Chrysostom’s writings in the ancient world in the East and in the West. It is surprising that the “Golden Mouth” and his homilies have triggered so many difficulties from the very beginning until the present. In the past, in the East, a growing conflict with the Severian of Gabbala and other bishops became the main obstacle to the reception of Chrysostom’s preaching. In 403, at the so-called council at the oak, Chrysostom was condemned and exiled. One of many false accusations charged him with being too merciful toward sinners who were recidivists.In the West, Anian of Celedo, Pelagius’ friend, translated Chrysostom’s homilies (especially on Matthew) into Latin. Pelagianism was condemned and Chrysostom was suspected to be semi-Pelagian. The oldest and most integral Latin version of Chrysostom’s homilies on record date back from the twelfth century. In the fifteenth century pope Nicholaus V asked for a new translation.Similarly in Poland, Chrysostom was not too lucky. In Polish, only about 15 per cent of his homilies are available. Among the translators are J. Wujek, A. Załęski and J. Krystyniacki from the eighteenth century, and T. Sinko, W. Kania, A. Baron and J. Iluk from the twentieth century. Some of them are historians and philologists, but not theologians. This is a problem of the existing Polish translations: we need a good theological, biblical and homiletical elaboration of Chrysostom’s homilies.Homilies on Matthew were preached in 390 in Antioch when Chrysostom was already well-known. Chrysostom’s homilies are the first and one of the best ancient commentaries to this Gospel. He is the only man who in the first millennium of Christianity explained the Acts of the Apostles, and he is the only one in Christianity to do this in the form of homilies.The centre of the Jesus’ Gospel according to Chrysostom is the person of Jesus. The prime purpose of Matthew’s Gospel is to reveal the unconditional love of God for each human being. Homilies on Matthew are completely apolitical. Chrysostom never even mentions governors or political situations. Similarly, he does not speak about ecclesiastical canons of councils of Antioch from the fourth century. He is only interested in how to explain the best way to all the listeners the Good News that Jesus has brought on earth.At the end, Fr. Baron gives some examples of Chrysostom’s exegesis: Mt 12: 33-37; 10: 32; 28: 1-3 and Homily on Matthew 85, 3-4.

Severin from Dictyostelium discoideum is a Ca2(+)-activated actin-binding protein that severs actin filaments, nucleates actin assembly, and caps the fast growing ends of actin filaments. Sequence comparison with functionally related proteins, such as gelsolin, villin, or fragmin revealed highly conserved domains which are thought to be of functional significance. To attribute the different activities of the severin molecule to defined regions, progressively truncated severin polypeptides were constructed. The complete cDNA coding for 362 (DS362) amino acids and five 3' deletions coding for 277 (DS277), 177 (DS177), 151 (DS151), 117 (DS117), or 111 (DS111) amino acids were expressed in Escherichia coli. The proteins were purified to homogeneity and then characterized with respect to their effects on the polymerization or depolymerization kinetics of G- or F-actin solutions and their binding to G-actin. Furthermore, the Ca2+ binding of these proteins was investigated with a 45Ca-overlay assay and by monitoring Ca2(+)-dependent changes in tryptophan fluorescence. Bacterially expressed DS362 showed the same Ca2(+)-dependent activities as native severin. DS277, missing the 85 COOH-terminal amino acids of severin, had lost its strict Ca2+ regulation and displayed a Ca2(+)-independent capping activity, but was still Ca2+ dependent in its severing and nucleating activities. DS151 which corresponded to the first domain of gelsolin or villin had completely lost severing and nucleating properties. However, a residual severing activity of approximately 2% was detectable if 26 amino acids more were present at the COOH-terminal end (DS177). This locates similar to gelsolin the second actin-binding site to the border region between the first and second domain. Measuring the fluorescence enhancement of pyrene-labeled G-actin in the presence of DS111 showed that the first actin-binding site was present in the NH2-terminal 111 amino acids. Extension by six or more amino acids stabilized this actin-binding site in such a way that DS117 and even more pronounced DS151 became Ca2(+)-independent capping proteins. In comparison to many reports on gelsolin we draw the following conclusions. Among the three active actin-binding sites in gelsolin the closely neighboured sites one and two share the F-actin fragmenting function, whereas the actin-binding sites two and three, which are located in far distant domains, collaborate for nucleation. In contrast, severin contains two active actin-binding sites which are next to each other and are responsible for the severing as well as the nucleating function. The single actin-binding site near the NH2-terminus is sufficient for capping of actin filaments.

Aim. To estimate the effectiveness of Diltiazem (Dlt) and its combination with nitrates in patients with ischemic heart disease (CHD) and arterial hypertension (AH) according to exercise tolerance by functional class (FC) of stable angina (StA).Material and methods. 30 CHD male patients at the age of 58,8±7,5 with StA II FC (n=11), III FC (n=19) and 1–2 stage AH were included into open randomized placebo-controlled study. Drug therapy: Dlt 90–180 mg bid, isosorbide 5-mononitrate 50 mg qd, trinitrolong 2 mg bid or tid. Effectiveness of the regular drug intake was controlled by repeated exercise tolerance tests (ETT) by treadmill with the value of threshold effort time (ThT). Total duration of treatment was 4 weeks.Results. At the beginning the ThT was 249,8±23,4 s for III FC and 368,6±14,4 s for II FC patients (p=0,0001). One dose of Dlt increased ThT in 5 hours to 387,3±37,5 s and 533,7±20,3 s in both groups, respectively (p=0,001), with the difference between groups being held. During regular Dlt intake the ThT in III FC angina patients reached 441,1±26,8 s, but in II FC patients in has not changed: 526,1±22,0 s. Additional nitrate intake to III FC group led to even more increase of ThT; in II FC patients there was no improvement. Combination therapy by Dlt and nitrates has not led to differences between III and II FC groups by achieved exercise tolerance. Hemodynamic parameters in both groups has not differ.Conclusion. For patients with III FC stable angina it is recommended to prescribe Dlt with nitrates because of additional effectiveness of combination that might be linked to the influence on cardiac hemodynamics and to improvement of myocardium metabolism. In II FC stable angina Dlt alone reaches its maximum antiischemic effect so the addition of nitrates is not helpful.

Introducción: la severidad de una disfonía da cuenta del grado de alteración que tiene una voz en relación con todos los procesos fisiológicos involucrados con la producción del sonido. Es importante determinar el nivel de severidad a fin de establecer un programa con el conjunto de ejercicios que permitan una rehabilitación apropiada. Objetivo: comprender si el comportamiento de los diferentes parámetros aerodinámicos, electroglotográficos, acústicos y de autorreporte vocal permite o no determinar la severidad de una disfonía. Método: se evaluaron 55 sujetos con diferentes tipos de disfonía según parámetros aerodinámicos, electroglotográficos, acústicos y de autorreporte vocal. La muestra fue dividida en 3 grupos de acuerdo con el grado de gravedad de la patología. Se aplicó un análisis de varianza para comparar el comportamiento de las variables dependientes en relación con los niveles de severidad de la disfonía. Con el fin de determinar las diferencias entre estos niveles, se aplicó la prueba Post hoc (Tukey) a las variables significativas. Resultados: es posible determinar el nivel de severidad de una disfonía a partir de parámetros acústicos como el CPP, HNR y el cociente de pendiente espectral 1/5-5/8Khz. También se puede hacer por medio de cuestionarios de autorreporte vocal como el VOISS, el VHI y el VTDS.
