This thesis began as an examination of the influence of Darwinism on images of racial types in the Australian illustrated popular press. Taking a broad scope, encompassing depictions of the Irish, Chinese, Aborigine and South Sea Islander, I soon discovered that a single focus on social Darwinist influence was perhaps more restrictive than revealing. Consequently, although I maintain Darwinian evolutionary theory is at the hub of influences on the iconography of racial types, I have allowed my analysis to range outside the Darwinian influence to encircle a more complex ideological construction of these racial images. Nevertheless, I have kept the core of the study as a demonstration of the significant impact of Darwinian evolutionary theory on the iconography of racial groups. I argue that the influence of the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species on racial representations was mainly on the modification of existing iconographic stereotypes, but I also claim that the evolutionary impact did produce new images or types. The principal focus is the Australian popular illustrated and comic press. However, to investigate the derivation of particular iconographic types, selected English and American sources are also examined.

El presente trabajo aspira a estudiar, describir y analizar un proceso particular de difusión del imaginario darwinista social, racista y eugenésico en la literatura popular chilena. Específicamente el que se presenta en el Almanaque 18, publicación de la empresa farmoquímica Daube y Cía. Dicho almanaque, se inscribe en el género de la literatura popular y en su período inicial de publicación (1921 – 1931), podemos observar un proceso de difusión de pensamiento científico al mundo de la cultura popular. La investigación ha tematizado diez años de publicación del Almanaque 18 en torno de los discursos y representaciones del darwinismo, el racismo y la eugenesia. Subsidiariamente, la investigación indaga en las prácticas de lectura y en el proceso de apropiación social de estos discursos, en el entendido que no es posible trasladar mecánicamente una grilla social dada al mundo de la cultura y a las comunidades de interpretación de los textos. La hipótesis de mayor alcance de la investigación postula la existencia de un proyecto eugénico en curso en las primeras décadas del siglo XX chileno y que el nacionalismo en clave de integración forma parte secundaria de este proyecto biopolítico, basado en la degradación de la vida humana a recurso.

This research examines the concept of Social. Darwinism in relation to British imperialism, with particular reference to Northern Nigeria and the administrative work of Charles Temple during the period 1901 ~ 1916. At the centre of previous portrayals of Temple and his career is the suggestion that he was an introspective and unusually speculative man, whose significance in the history of Northern Nigeria is limited to the contribution of some abstruse ideas of narrow relevance to the practical administration of colonial government. The existing historical accounts, which are often based on uncontextualised and sometimes casual appraisals of his book Native Races and Their Rulers, also suggest that Temple believed in minimal intervention into native communities. The result of these assessments has been that Temple's rationale for colonial rule (in particular his wish to protect indigenous communities from sudden or abrupt change) has been over- emphasised, whilst his advice on the practical implementation of this rationale has been largely ignored. Against this background Native Races can only be properly understood from a detailed analysis of its ideological and historical context. The relationship between British imperialism and Social Darwinism, and particularly the specific aspects of this debate likely to have interested a man of Temple's age, background and profession, are outlined. It is concluded that within such a context, the most likely function of Social Darwinism in relation to British imperialism was to provide justification for intervention into, and for the subjugation of, foreign communities - as well as a means of explaining the racial and other contradictions which this process involved. A detailed analysis of Temple's Native Races establishes that there is a strong contiguity between his ideas and those expressed in the contemporary mainstream debate that combined ideas on British imperialism with Social Darwinist assumptions. It is argued that the techniques which Temple proposed for interpreting specific native customs, beliefs and institutions, as well as his version of the policy of Indirect Rule, displayed Social Darwinist assumptions. It is also clear that Temple required a great deal of practical intervention from British administrators - even if they were cautioned to allow the natives to find their own path of progression. Substantial new evidence indicates that Temple was a man out to make a name for himself as a modern, scientific and liberal administrator and that he had a real, powerful and continuous influence on the administration of Northern Nigeria for nearly sixteen years. Whilst Temple thought detailed and scientific administrative policy was vital, he also realised that without organizational efficiency and continuity in practice, little could be achieved. Temple believed that this stage in the development of Northern Nigerian communities required sustained and rigorous intervention, and he consistently justified this approach in official documents and journal articles from a Social Darwinist interpretation of native societies. The thesis offers considerable evidence, including a detailed appraisal of his wider connections and interests, to support the case that the contribution which Temple made towards British government in Northern Nigeria lay in the translation of administrative theory into actual practice. It is therefore concluded that Temple not only used Social Darwinism to explain racial differences and justify British imperialism, but also caused it to have a direct impact on the practical administration of colonial rule in Northern Nigeria between 1901 and 1916.

'Culture' is defined as information, such as knowledge, beliefs, skills, attitudes or values, that is passed from individual to individual via social (or cultural) transmission and expressed in behaviour or artifacts. 'Cultural evolution' holds that this cultural inheritance system is governed by the same Darwinian processes as gene-based biological evolution. In Part A of this thesis it is argued that as compelling a case can now be made for a Darwinian theory of cultural evolution as Darwin himself presented in The Origin Of Species for biological evolution, If culture does indeed evolve, then it follows that the structure of a science of cultural evolution should broadly resemble that of the science of biological evolution. Hence Part A concludes by outlining a unified science of cultural evolution based on the sub-disciplines of evolutionary biology. Parts B and C comprise original empirical and theoretical work constituting two branches of this science of cultural evolution. Part B describes a series of experiments testing for a number of hypothesised biases in cultural transmission. Evidence was found for a 'social bias' that acts to promote information concerning third-party social relationships over equivalent non-social information, and a 'hierarchical bias' that acts to transform knowledge of everyday events from low-level actions into higher-level goals. Three other hypothesised biases concerning status, anthropomorphism and neoteny were not supported, although each gave rise to potential, future work using this methodology. Part C presents a theoretical investigation into the coevolution of the genetic bases of human mating behaviour and culturally inherited folk beliefs regarding paternity. Gene-culture coevolution and agent-based models suggested that beliefs in 'partible paternity' (that more than one man can father a child) create a new more polygamous form of society compared with beliefs in singular paternity (that only one man can father a child).

How can a literary theorist account for unselected texts and narratives, and measure the importance of voices no longer audible to readers today? The following dissertation uses various, and variously successful 19th century literary texts as a point of departure for considering the complex forces affecting the fragment of texts selected over time from within a wider field of anonymous and unwritten narratives. Bridging literary theory and Darwinian science, "Evolutionary Landscapes" argues that concepts of mutation, replication and selection can provide a framework for thinking about how narratives and genre developed in the 19th century United States. Current attempts to bring biological insights directly into literary study through evolutionary psychology or cognitive Darwinism ignore the complex systems, including cultural and market forces, that might have been used to predict a given text's chances for longer-term survival. The figure I choose to represent these economic, unwritten, and cultural influences on literary texts is the "adaptive landscape" developed by the geneticist Sewall Wright, and recently adapted by the evolutionary theorist Michael Ruse. The relationships between texts and ecologies fore-grounded in the following chapters, even when dealing with individual authors, necessitates looking at literature from the point of view of the random mutation and subsequent selection of texts in the face of a collectively determined ecology of formal expectations. My approach to the evolution of literature builds on the work of the literary critic Franco Moretti and the philosopher Daniel Dennett, although a turn to U.S. rather than British fiction casts a different light on literary evolution than that described yet by Moretti, and deals more specifically with questions of literary and cultural history than either Dennett's philosophy of memetics or Carroll's socio-biologically inflected Literary Darwinism alone would allow. The 19th century literary ecology to which the fictions of Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Edward Bellamy and Mary Wilkins Freeman were well or poorly adapted can be imagined as a kind of fitness landscape where literary publications are drawn towards the peaks climbed by previous writers, representing conventions or formula that proven successful in the past. A gradualist focus on textual silence and extinction within literary evolution, along with evolutionary and ecological theory, can provide abstract models to make visible the complex ecology of oral, cultural, written, printed and reprinted information that constitutes the "soft tissues" always missing from the archival past.

The thesis analyses the Finnish immigration apparatus through a Foucaultian governmentality framework and critiques the way immigration has been problematized. The immigration apparatus, ranging from discourses to various administrative regulations and their rationalities, is examined through the Finnish Aliens Act, Schengen visa regulations, and Finnish Immigration Services implementation documentation as well as through the related governmental bills and reports and parliamentary discussions and committee statements between 1999 and 2010. The thesis argues that the governmentality of immigration is a socio-evolutionary governmentality that relies on largely taken-for-granted conceptualisations of how society needs to be governed. The thesis shows that immigration control cannot be understood solely through the discourses of nationalism, liberalism and multiculturalism, but that these discourses themselves need to be understood in the light of a state racist socio-evolutionary constellation of power/knowledge at the heart of liberal governmentality and its naturalism. In the first instance, this claim is supported by a discourse theoretical analysis of the functioning of power/knowledge in immigration-related discourses. Additionally, the claim is supported by contrasting the analysis of discourses and rationalities of governing with an analysis of technologies of governing, i.e. rules and regulations of immigration control. The thesis then questions the governmentality of the immigration apparatus through various epistemological tools of decentring. These tools highlight how a commonsensical truth about immigration and its governing is produced through methods, such as utilising explanations relying on psychologism, historicism, naturalisation, market veridiction and universalism/particularism, which enable a silence and scarcity of meaning around the taken-for-granted modes of knowing immigration and its governing. Finally, this claim about state racist governmentality of immigration is evidenced by a comparison of the contemporary way of problematizing immigration with the way immigration was problematized by early American race hygienic immigration policies. This comparison insists that eugenics and social Darwinism should not be exceptionalised, but that their rationalities of governing should be evaluated in terms of the logic of making live and letting die that they propose. The thesis concludes that unacknowledged and taken-for-granted modes of knowing the world in socio-evolutionary terms and specifically in social Darwinist terms emphasizing social position as a measure of fitness and human worth and entailing an all-inclusive logic of racialisation have an impact on contemporary liberal ways of governing immigration both in general and in Finland in, at the point at which we think how immigration should be governed so that it promotes the health and wealth of the population and defends it from degeneration.

The core aim of this interdisciplinary research is to provide a critical analysis of the influence of Darwinism and Social Darwinism on a sample of modern Chinese writings. To achieve these aims, the researcher uses a range of both Chinese and English sources to explore their close affinities with Darwinism and Social Darwinism. Following this course, the research examines how Darwinian thought was introduced to the Chinese reading public in the late nineteenth century through a translation of Thomas Henry Huxley’s Evolution and Ethics by Yen Fu, and the subsequent impact of this work and Darwinian thought in general on seven literary and political figures: K'ang Yu-wei, Liang Qichao, Lu Xun, Hu Shih, Chen Duxiu, Sun Yat-sen and Mao Zedong. From an historical perspective, the Opium Wars and imperial invasions of China in the nineteenth century severely weakened the country’s political, economic, diplomatic, military, educational and cultural power. For these reasons and others, from 1840 to 1949, China experienced a tumultuous period of social and political transformation, which has eventually led to her revival in the twenty-first century. It will be seen that each of the literary figures examined here used evolutionary thought to justify revolution at various points on China’s long march to modernity. Progressive Darwinian ideas sharply contrasted with the old Confucian values upheld within Chinese communities. Nevertheless, the faults and weaknesses of Qing China awakened many pioneering revolutionaries who sought to reverse the status quo by initiating a series of radical reforms and revolutionary movements. Many within the Chinese intellectual elite looked to the tide of change and progress coming from the West, which they hoped might replace the recent historical stagnation and Confucian dogma embedded in Chinese culture and society. In this vein, many of these pioneering revolutionaries set about driving the historical transformation of China by selecting, translating and interpreting Darwinian ideas in their own writings. From Yen Fu in the nineteenth century to Mao Zedong in the twentieth century, evolutionary thought went hand in hand with China’s modernization.

This study of civil-military relations treats the parallel development of: a.) the professional soldier and the Prussian- German army in the era from 1806 until 1945, as well as; b.) the rise of nationalism in central European politics and society, which culminated in the union of the professional soldier and National Socialism after 1933. These two political phenomena of modern Europe, in the first instance, the army, and in the second instance, voelkisch nationalism became a deadly combination in the Germany of the era 1914-1933. The abdication of the monarchy in 1918 forced the professional soldier to look for a substitute sovereign, who would insure the survival of the privileged role of the soldier in republican state and society. This study provides case studies of civil-military episodes in German history from 1806-1944, where civilian control and liberal oversight of the aristocratic military structure might have been possible, but liberal and socialist forces squandered the opportunities at hand. This study counter poses episodes of civil-military conflict in the Prussian German past, with an analysis of the origins and character of integral nationalism and National Socialism. In particular, the study analyzes the ideological effort to influence the Reichswehr during the Weimar Republic. The missed civil-military opportunities for democratic forces in the 1920s resulted in the culmination of political, military, and socio-economic conditions ideal for the National Socialists in their quest for power. This failure of important political-military reform set the stage for interwar cooperation between military and the Nazis. The National Socialists wanted to make the army an instrument of power via a â bottom upâ revolution to subjugate the military command structure. This study speaks to this historical series of case studies within the general analysis of democratic civil-military relations. The failure of liberal and later democratic forces to integrate the military into constitutional mechanisms stands as one of the more grievous catastrophes of the story of the soldier and the state.

The thesis investigates Literature Education as one cultural representation of societies. The use of literature is seen as essential to the process of educating social subjects. It is a subject founded on an interdisciplinary triangle composed of an asymmetrical combination of language studies, cultural studies and social studies. Each change of the apex of the triangle indicates a shifted emphasis on certain socio-cultural and politico-pedagogical characteristics. As a bordercrossing discipline, literature education can have a central role in the creation of a socio-political conscience in the future citizens of a particular society. In the thesis two paradigms of literature education have been viewed, described and analysed. The first, the English paradigm, attempts to inculcate in students a range of 'high-culture' values, without offering a clear methodology for the teaching of literature. It has relatively blurred objectives and theories, and aims at fostering personal responses to the literary text. The other, the Brazilian, is a positivist paradigm centred on literary history. It privileges a pseudo-scientific objectivity. In spite of the conceptual differences between a systematised, descriptive model on the one hand, requiring the mastery of large quantities of content, and another, aiming at building up cultural and literary subjectivity, the thesis suggests similarities between them in terms of certain pedagogic practices, views of students, and of the final product aimed for. This dissertation analyses and describes the cultural significance of the curricular contents and pedagogic practices of literature education in the final years of secondary school, through the data of classroom practices collected both in England and in Brazil. In aiming to understand literature education as a social metaphor it concludes by making some recommendations on modes of teaching and learning which may be essential in creating greater access to cultural goods and thereby more equitable societies.

Resumo: O fim de um longo período de prosperidade, que apresentava promessas tão generosas em relação às possibilidades de o capitalismo resolver suas mazelas sociais e interromper uma imanente lógica de gerar continuamente um exército industrial de reserva através do progresso técnico, é sempre um fenômeno que gera certo grau de perplexidade e mal-estar. Foi assim com a ¿idade do ouro¿ do capitalismo contemporâneo, inaugurada no pós II Guerra Mundial. Neste texto é apresentada a trajetória da constituição do padrão de acumulação fordista/keynesiano e os fundamentos de sua prosperidade, seu esgotamento e a transição para a agenda neoliberal, delineando-se sua lógica básica, a partir de um esquema de análise sugerido pela leitura da escola da regulação e de algumas considerações críticas a essa abordagem
Abstract: The end of a long period of prosperity that stemmed such generous promises as those regarding the possibilities of the capitalism to overcome its social drama and to interrupt its inner logic of continuosly generate a industrial reserve army through technical progress, is always a phenomenon that emerge a great deal of uneasiness. That was the case with the ¿golden age¿ of contemporary capitalism, that reached its maturity afeter the second world war. This thesis presents the building path of fordism/keynesianism pattern of accumulation. Also debate the principles of this long period of prosperity, its dismantling and transition to neoliberal agenda, extracting its basic logic through an approach suggested by the readings of the regulation school and some critical developments to this approach

This thesis argues that the corpus of Old Norse-Icelandic literature which pertains to Iceland contains an intertextual narrative of the formation of Icelandic identity. An analysis of this narrative provides an opportunity to examine the relationship between literature and identity, as well as the potency of the artistic use of the idea of the past. The thesis identifies three salient narratives of communal action which inform the development of a discrete Icelandic identity, and which are examined in turn in the first three chapters of the thesis. The first is the landnám, the process of settlement itself; the second, the origin and evolution of the law; and the third, the assimilation and adaptation of Christianity. Although the roots of these narratives are doubtless historical, the thesis argues that their primary roles in the literature are as social myths, narratives whose literal truth- value is immaterial, but whose cultural symbolism is of overriding importance. The fourth chapter examines the depiction of the Icelander abroad, and uses the idiom of the relationship between þáttr (‘tale’) and surrounding text in the compilation of sagas of Norwegian kings Morkinskinna to consider the wider implications of the relationship between Icelandic and Norwegian identities. Finally, the thesis concludes with an analysis of the role of Sturlunga saga within this intertextual narrative, and its function as a set of narratives mediating between an identity grounded in social autonomy and one grounded in literature. The Íslendingasögur or ‘family sagas’ constitute the core of the thesis’s primary sources, for their subject-matter is focussed on the literary depiction of the Icelandic society under scrutiny. In order to demonstrate a continuity of engagement with ideas of identity across genres, a sample of other Icelandic texts are examined which depict Iceland or Icelanders, especially when in interaction with non-Icelandic characters or polities.

This thesis explores the relationships between science fiction, social theory and social transformation through an in-depth analysis of three feminist science fiction novels. It develops innovative reading practices that bring together narrative theories and methodologies from a range of disciplines, including Sociology, Cultural Studies and Literary Studies. With reference to feminist psychoanalytic theory, the thesis also develops an original theorisation of the 'utopian impulse' and the workings of passionate identification in the formation of interpretive communities, with particular reference to feminist, social theoretical, and science fiction (fan) communities. The three novels focused on — The Gate to Women's Country, Body of Glass and The Fifth Sacred Thing — were selected because they crystallise an extensive range of debates conducted in a period of productive crisis for feminist theory and praxis from the mid 1980s through the mid 1990s. The thesis conducts an in-depth analysis of the transformations in social relations, including intimate social relations, that the novels theorise are necessary for the re-visioning of feminist futures. These include issues surrounding Sex, Gender and Sexuality; Mothering and Fatherhood; the relationship between investments in Spirituality, Technology and Hope for the Future. These debates are all set in the larger context of the historical (and epistemological) rupture between Modern and Post-Modern thought caused by the traumatic events of the Holocaust. The thesis argues that the heteroglossic genre possibilities of science fiction enable the novel texts to embody diverse strands of contestatory feminist theorising. They can thus hold open debates that might be foreclosed in more academic genres of theory that prefer texts to embody a single coherent authorial voice. Throughout the thesis I argue that this is a particularly timely moment to examine such questions, when feminist theory in the academy is apparently dominated by post-structuralist theory, and other feminist theories, namely those clustered around radical feminism, have been and continue to be abjected. I argue that feminist hope for the future requires that no feminist theories should simply be rejected, but that they require conscientious re-readings. Feminists, I argue, must take account of their passionate longings for inclusion in feminist interpretive communities as well as the pain caused when feminist theories exclude their subjective experience and / or alternative theories. The reading practices that can be developed when reading feminist science fiction can facilitate such a process.

Esta pesquisa propõe uma reflexão sobre um grupo específico e suas práticas sociais na internet: os booktubers. Booktubers são criadores de canais de vídeos dedicados ao tema livro na plataforma YouTube. Este trabalho tem como foco analisar as interações sociais nesses canais literários, criados inicialmente por jovens leitores, abrindo espaço para a discussão de literatura juvenil. Para isso, foram analisados os canais das booktubers Tatiana Feltrin, Pamela Gonçalves e Thereza Andrada. O trabalho se apoia nas noções de juventude e cultura juvenil, na leitura da cibercultura como cultura contemporânea, e nas de socialidade e interações no meio digital. Como resultado da análise, notamos que os booktubers nasceram como um movimento juvenil espontâneo na web, mas estão intrinsecamente vinculados às mídias de massa. Verificamos também que há uma regulação do espaço no YouTube, em que a principal estratégia de comunicação passa pela valorização da espontaneidade e do falar de si.
This research broaches an specific group and it s social practices on the web: the booktubers, owners of YouTube channels dedicated to the theme books. This paper focuses on analysing the social interactions on these literary channels, created initially by young readers, and opening up the debate on young adult literature. To do so, the channels chosen for analysis are Tatiana Feltrin s, Pamela Gonçalves and Thereza Andrada s. This research supports itself on the notions of youth and youth culture, of cyberculture as contemporary culture and of sociability and digital interactions. As a result of this analysis, we noted that although booktubers have started as a spontaneous youth movement on the web, they are intrinsically tied to mass media. We also concluded that there s a regulation of YouTube cyberspace, in which the main strategy of communicating includes meriting spontaneity and talking about oneself.

Many critics have examined the shifting nature of female friendship in Jane Austen’s Emma from cultural and historical angles. However, a comprehensive scientific analysis of female-female alliance and competition in the novel remains incomplete. The Literary Darwinist approach considers the motivations of fictional characters from an evolutionary perspective, focusing primarily on human cognition and behaviors linked to reproductive success, social control, and survival. While overt physical displays of male competition are conspicuous in the actions of the human species and those of their closest primate relatives, female aggression is often brandished psychologically and indirectly, which makes for a much more precarious study. In this paper, cultural criticism and evolutionary psychology work together to unravel the most complicated and arcane layers of intrasexual competition between women in Emma. Ultimately, this dual interpretation of the novel steers readers towards a deeper understanding of Emma Woodhouse’s imperiled friendships, and by extension, their own.

L'objectif principal d'un système de recherche d'information est de sélectionner les documents pertinents qui répondent au besoin en information exprimé par l'utilisateur à travers une requête. Depuis les années 1970-1980, divers modèles théoriques ont été proposés dans ce sens pour représenter les documents et les requêtes d'une part et les apparier d'autre part, indépendamment de tout utilisateur. Plus récemment, l'arrivée du Web 2. 0 ou le Web social a remis en cause l'efficacité de ces modèles du fait qu'ils ignorent l'environnement dans lequel l'information se situe. En effet, l'utilisateur n'est plus un simple consommateur de l'information mais il participe également à sa production. Pour accélérer la production de l'information et améliorer la qualité de son travail, l'utilisateur échange de l'information avec son voisinage social dont il partage les mêmes centres d'intérêt. Il préfère généralement obtenir l'information d'un contact direct plutôt qu'à partir d'une source anonyme. Ainsi, l'utilisateur, influencé par son environnement socio-cultuel, donne autant d'importance à la proximité sociale de la ressource d'information autant qu'à la similarité des documents à sa requête. Dans le but de répondre à ces nouvelles attentes, la recherche d'information s'oriente vers l'implication de l'utilisateur et de sa composante sociale dans le processus de la recherche. Ainsi, le nouvel enjeu de la recherche d'information est de modéliser la pertinence compte tenu de la position sociale et de l'influence de sa communauté. Le second enjeu est d'apprendre à produire un ordre de pertinence qui traduise le mieux possible l'importance et l'autorité sociale. C'est dans ce cadre précis, que s'inscrit notre travail. Notre objectif est d'estimer une pertinence sociale en intégrant d'une part les caractéristiques sociales des ressources et d'autre part les mesures de pertinence basées sur les principes de la recherche d'information classique. Nous proposons dans cette thèse d'intégrer le réseau social d'information dans le processus de recherche d'information afin d'utiliser les relations sociales entre les acteurs sociaux comme une source d'évidence pour mesurer la pertinence d'un document en réponse à une requête. Deux modèles de recherche d'information sociale ont été proposés à des cadres applicatifs différents : la recherche d'information bibliographique et la recherche d'information dans les microblogs. Les importantes contributions de chaque modèle sont détaillées dans la suite. Un modèle social pour la recherche d'information bibliographique. Nous avons proposé un modèle générique de la recherche d'information sociale, déployé particulièrement pour l'accès aux ressources bibliographiques. Ce modèle représente les publications scientifiques au sein d'réseau social et évalue leur importance selon la position des auteurs dans le réseau. Comparativement aux approches précédentes, ce modèle intègre des nouvelles entités sociales représentées par les annotateurs et les annotations sociales. En plus des liens de coauteur, ce modèle exploite deux autres types de relations sociales : la citation et l'annotation sociale. Enfin, nous proposons de pondérer ces relations en tenant compte de la position des auteurs dans le réseau social et de leurs mutuelles collaborations. Un modèle social pour la recherche d'information dans les microblogs. } Nous avons proposé un modèle pour la recherche de tweets qui évalue la qualité des tweets selon deux contextes: le contexte social et le contexte temporel. Considérant cela, la qualité d'un tweet est estimé par l'importance sociale du blogueur correspondant. L'importance du blogueur est calculée par l'application de l'algorithme PageRank sur le réseau d'influence sociale. Dans ce même objectif, la qualité d'un tweet est évaluée selon sa date de publication. Les tweets soumis dans les périodes d'activité d'un terme de la requête sont alors caractérisés par une plus grande importance. Enfin, nous proposons d'intégrer l'importance sociale du blogueur et la magnitude temporelle avec les autres facteurs de pertinence en utilisant un modèle Bayésien
An information retrieval system aims at selecting relevant documents that meet user's information needs expressed with a textual query. For the years 1970-1980, various theoretical models have been proposed in this direction to represent, on the one hand, documents and queries and on the other hand to match information needs independently of the user. More recently, the arrival of Web 2. 0, known also as the social Web, has questioned the effectiveness of these models since they ignore the environment in which the information is located. In fact, the user is no longer a simple consumer of information but also involved in its production. To accelerate the production of information and improve the quality of their work, users tend to exchange documents with their social neighborhood that shares the same interests. It is commonly preferred to obtain information from a direct contact rather than from an anonymous source. Thus, the user, under the influenced of his social environment, gives as much importance to the social prominence of the information as the textual similarity of documents at the query. In order to meet these new prospects, information retrieval is moving towards novel user centric approaches that take into account the social context within the retrieval process. Thus, the new challenge of an information retrieval system is to model the relevance with regards to the social position and the influence of individuals in their community. The second challenge is produce an accurate ranking of relevance that reflects as closely as possible the importance and the social authority of information producers. It is in this specific context that fits our work. Our goal is to estimate the social relevance of documents by integrating the social characteristics of resources as well as relevance metrics as defined in classical information retrieval field. We propose in this work to integrate the social information network in the retrieval process and exploit the social relations between social actors as a source of evidence to measure the relevance of a document in response to a query. Two social information retrieval models have been proposed in different application frameworks: literature access and microblog retrieval. The main contributions of each model are detailed in the following. A social information model for flexible literature access. We proposed a generic social information retrieval model for literature access. This model represents scientific papers within a social network and evaluates their importance according to the position of respective authors in the network. Compared to previous approaches, this model incorporates new social entities represented by annotators and social annotations (tags). In addition to co-authorships, this model includes two other types of social relationships: citation and social annotation. Finally, we propose to weight these relationships according to the position of authors in the social network and their mutual collaborations. A social model for information retrieval for microblog search. We proposed a microblog retrieval model that evaluates the quality of tweets in two contexts: the social context and temporal context. The quality of a tweet is estimated by the social importance of the corresponding blogger. In particular, blogger's importance is calculated by the applying PageRank algorithm on the network of social influence. With the same aim, the quality of a tweet is evaluated according to its date of publication. Tweets submitted in periods of activity of query terms are then characterized by a greater importance. Finally, we propose to integrate the social importance of blogger and the temporal magnitude tweets as well as other relevance factors using a Bayesian network model

While BI aims at supporting an organization’s decisions by providing relevant analytical data, social media is an emerging source of personal and individual knowledge, opinion, and attitudes of stakeholders. For a while, a convergence of the two domains can be observed in real-world implementations and research, resulting in concepts like social BI. Many research questions still remain open – or even worse – are not yet formulated. Therefore, the paper aims at articulating a research agenda for social BI. By means of a literature review we systematically explored previous work and developed a framework. It contrasts social media characteristics with BI design areas and is used to derive the social BI research agenda. Our results show that the integration of social media (data) into a BI system has impact on almost all BI design objects.

The Assembly of First Nations has identified "the need to develop an integrated, holistic, inter-departmental and inter­ organizational organism to address the inequities and gaps in health and social service delivery to First Nations" (AFN, 2002). However, there is much work to be done in efforts to reach this goal, as there are many factors that one must take into consideration when examining Aboriginal health from a holistic perspective. For example, it has been reported that in British Columbia (BC) that 20% of Aboriginal people are below the provincial average based on income, employment, and educational attainment and housing (Kendell and Hull, 2002). In addition to national reports, the BC Ministry of Health advocates that there is the need to look at the broad spectrum of health and social determinants to come up with solutions that will improve the health and well being of Aboriginal people. These determinants are comprised of health, gender, biology, culture, coping skills, social environments, social support networks, income and social status, employment and working conditions, education, child development and physical environments. The determinants are interdependent, cannot be examined individually and a holistic approach needs to be utilized when dealing with Aboriginal health issues. It is important for non-aboriginals to observe the difference in fundamental viewpoints of Aboriginal people in their relationship with the natural surroundings, other races, flora and fauna (Driben and Simpson, 2000). The lack of control over one's life plays an important factor in their well-being.

The prevalence of alcoholic writers in 20th-century American literature reached what has been called epidemic proportions. Many of these writers wrote autobiographical accounts of their alcoholism through alter egos in their literary works. Of these, perhaps none is as extensive and detailed as Charles Bukowski's persona Henry Chinaski. This thesis is a case study of Chinaski's alcoholism through five of Bukowski's autobiographical novels. In it, I explore the complexities of Chinaski's alcoholism and make the claim that social alienation is a driving force for the onset and the intensity of his alcohol addiction. The novels span Chinaski's life from youth to old age, and factors such as childhood abuse and labor conditions in the post-Depression era work to alienate him. Through close, contextual reading of Bukowski's novels aided with sociological and medical scholarship on addiction, the relationship between alienation and alcoholism is explored.

In this paper, using the eight social functions of laughter defined by Foot and McCreaddie (2007), instances of the word laugh and its variants were analyzed in canonical British literature from the 14th century to the 21st and then compared. In the literature investigated, derision laughter was the most common function during the 15th through 17th centuries. In the centuries to follow humorous laughter took that position. An explanation for this could be that there was no clear division between derision laughter and humorous laughter until the 18th century (Classen, 2010). Also noted was an increase in the frequency of instances of laughter per 1000 words since the 17th century in the investigated literature, as well as an increase in variation of social functions used. The low frequency of laughter in the past may have been a result of the teachings of the church in England. The increased variation in functions of laughter could indicate that the pragmatic feature of laughter has acquired new functions, or that some functions were not depicted in the older literature of this study.

Imaginative Slaves explores the question of how Thomas Hardy imagined and addressed his contemporary readers. The representative or ideal reader sparked incessant conflict between all those who controlled the late-nineteenth-century reading industry. This thesis attempts to understand Hardy's imagined readers as constructs which he developed and shaped in largely antagonistic response to his culture's dominant conceptions of the reader, especially the oppressively pervasive conceptions held by publishers, editors, circulating libraries, and critics. All these conceptions tended to circle around the powerful reader of the day: the middle-class reader. Questions of class and gender, therefore, are particularly important to this thesis which very much grounds Hardy and his readers in their cultural, historical context. Hardy's unconventional, contentious attitudes towards his readers are considered as challenges to class and gender divisions, challenges, indeed, to the hardening Victorian social system. Hardy's novels, ultimately, question the belief that people are and should be members of narrowly defined, divisive social strata. Imaginative Slaves begins with a general discussion of Victorian reading culture, its structure, forms, ruling ideas, values, misconceptions, and anxieties. Moving on to consider perhaps the dominant conception of the reader, the Young Girl, it examines Hardy's struggles with this reader figure. Other important conceptions of the reader and reading are then tackled: the sensation reader and the working-class reader whose shadowy, threatening figure haunted and motivated many of the middle-class strictures placed on fiction such as Hardy's. The thesis ends with a consideration of both Hardy's legacy in the form of theatrical adaptations and the interpretive and social implications ofactual readers' theatrical reinvention of his novels. This thesis also implicitly questions recent critics' understandings of the popular or non-academic reader. Imaginonve Slaves, emulating Hardy, attempts to offer a rich, challenging, and socially grounded portrayal of readers which recognizes the potential power ofthe reader and the reading process
