This quantitative study deals with the transition from junior to senior sports comparing individual (ISA) and team (TSA) sports athletes in terms of: (a) differences between transition and personal variables, (b) relationships between transition and personal variables, (c) contributions of some transition and personal variables into the quality of adjustment on the senior level of sport. There were 195 participants, ISA (n = 49) and TSA (n = 146). Four instruments were used: the Transition Monitoring Survey, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire and the Physical Self Perception Profile (revised). Thirty significant differences in the transition and personal variables were found. There was a common pattern in the correlations between transition and personal variables and specific patterns for ISA and TSA. Coping strategies, body attractiveness, athletic identity and physical self-value appeared to be predictors for the quality of adjustment for ISA and coping strategies, ego orientation and physical self-value for TSA. The results are discussed in relation to theoretical frameworks and previous research.

A 3 x 2 (increase/decrease/no change x gender) Chi square was employed to determine status of sports, perceived masculinity of males/femininity of females, and status of the athlete related to gender attributes of sports.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of prophylactic ankle bracing and the effects of prophylactic ankle taping on athletes' speed and agility. Thirty-one subjects, twenty-one male professional baseball players and ten female collegiate softball players with no history of an ankle injury the previous six months, participated in three performance tests while wearing the ASO ankle brace, a modified Gimby ankle taping, and unsupported. The subjects completed the flying forty yard dash for speed, the SEMO test for general agility, and the Edgren test for specific lateral agility. Multiple trials were administrated to account for learning effects. The resultant data were analyzed with a multivariate repeated-measures design. The data were tested for order effects; no significant differences were found. The data were then tested for multicollinarity by use of an intercorrelation matrix across the three dependent (compacted) variables. A 2 x 3 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze gender and support conditions (with repeated measures) effects across the dependent variables; and significant differences were followed up with univariate analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Effects for interactions of gender x support condition were evaluated by Wilkes' A. There were no statistically significant interactions found. In univariate ANOVAs for post hoc testing significant differences were found for gender effect on speed (forty yd. dash), general agility(SEMO test), and specific lateral agility (Edgren test). ) A significant difference was found in the follow up univariate analysis across support conditions for general agility (SEMO test) wherein the unsupported condition was significantly faster (less time) than the braced or taped conditions. On the basis of the findings, it was concluded that the subjects' speed in the forty yard dash was not significantly reduced by bracing or taping. It was concluded that the subjects' agility was significantly slowed by both prophylactic bracing and taping as demonstrated by performance in the SEMO general agility test. It was concluded that males and females are not differentially affected by bracing and I or taping. There was no significant statistical difference found between the ASO Ankle brace and the taped ankle in speed and agility tests. It can be concluded that budgetary considerations and personnel time maybe the critical factors when selecting certain ankle braces over ankle taping.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to delineate differences in saccade characteristics between a population of athletes and non athletes. Aspects specifically investigated were latency, accuracy, peak velocity, and gain adaptation of saccades using both increasing and decreasing paradigms. Methods: A sample of 28 athletes (varsity badminton and squash players) and 18 non athletes (< 3 hour/week in sports) were studied. Eye movements were recorded at 120Hz using a video based eye tracker (ELMAR 2020). Each subject participated in 2 sessions on separate days. Baseline saccade responses to dot stimuli were measured in both sessions (stimulus size: 5-25 deg). The first session involved a gain decreasing paradigm, induced by displacing the stimulus backwards by 3 degrees from the initial target step (12 deg) for 500 trials. In the 2nd session a gain increase was induced by displacing the stimuli by 3 degrees in the forward direction. The latency and accuracy were calculated from the baseline. The asymptotic peak velocity was calculated from the main sequence (amplitude vs. peak velocity). The amplitude gains, calculated from the adaptation phase, were averaged for every 100 saccade responses. The averaged gains were normalized with respect to the baseline, fitted with a 3rd order polynomial, and differentiated to obtain the rate of change. Differences between the groups were compared using a regression analysis. Results: There were no significant differences in latency, accuracy, and asymptotic peak velocity between athletes and non athletes. No significant differences were seen between the two groups in the magnitude of saccadic adaptation, both for decreasing (- 15% in both groups) and increasing (athletes + 7% and non athletes + 5%) paradigms. However, athletes showed a significantly faster rate of adaptation for the gain increasing paradigm (F = 17. 96[3,6]; p = 0. 002). A significant difference was not observed in the rate of adaptation for the gain decreasing adaptation (F = 0. 856[3,6]; p = 0. 512). Conclusions: The study showed that the athletes do not respond better in terms of reaction time or accuracy of saccades. The significant difference in the rate of change of adaptation between the groups shows that online modification of saccades in the positive direction, although not greater in magnitude, occurs quicker in athletes than non athletes.

The purpose of this thesis was to conduct a preliminary investigation to analyze the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) relationship to the treatment of the black athlete. Exploitation is described for the purposes of this paper as a system that facilitates the economic use of students by contracting with them to play sports for the university or college, in return for a "possible education" (which the athlete presumes is guaranteed to him and will be maintained until he receives his baccalaureate degree). This behavior among most colleges and universities is reprehensible and it promotes among these athletes an illusion that they are amateur athletes. Furthermore, most colleges and universities perpetuate the illusion that their athletes have a high probability of becoming professional ball players when in reality approximately 1 percent of all amateurs make the pros. Also, the NCAA Proposition 48 rule is briefly discussed·. and how it affects the black student athlete. To answer some of the researcher's questions and concerns, the researcher conducted a survey in which he interviewed thirty (30) former black male collegiate athletes who participated in the NCAA. These athletes were black males between the ages of 30 to 65 years old. This survey also assessed the attitudes, experiences and successful/unsuccessful outcomes of their collegiate career. The results of this preliminary investigation generally concluded that indeed, the black college athlete has been exploited by the NCAA and the university or college which he attended. Recommendations were provided that pertain to advocacy, information and creating other career options for college/university athletes.

Ces liaisons sont recherchees selon deux etats de la pratique sportive, celui du loisir tout d'abord et celui du plus haut niveau ensuite. Une analyse secondaire sur une enquete de l'insee aupres de menages representatifs de la population francaise, permet d'explorer le domaine du sport loisir. Ainsi il apparait que le sport en general est pratique par une population dont l'indice moyen de sociabilite utilise dans l'analyse, est plus eleve que celui de la population totale des francais. Une confirmation de cette association entre la sociabilite et la pratique sportive est etablie dans la pratique de haut niveau la question etait ici de savoir en quoi les sportifs de haut niveau se distinguent de la population generale. Aussi une enquete aupres d'un echantillon de sportifs de haut niveau a-t-elle ete menee ainsi qu'une enquete temoin aupres d'individus choisis au hasard mais correspondant terme a terme sur trois variables sociologiques : sexe, age et origine sociale des individus. La comparaison des deux echantillons montre alors un volume de sociabilite significativement plus important pour les sportifs de haut niveau par rapport a la population temoin. L'ensemble des resultats confirme que la pratique sportive est en correlation significative avec la sociabilite des pratiquants.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-motivation and several non-psychological variables on injured athletes' adherence to rehabilitation. Twenty-five (17 male, 8 female) injured intercollegiate athletes from several sports (football, gymnastics, diving, swimming, volleyball, cross country/track, baseball, and tennis) participated. After injured athletes reported to the training room for treatment, they were informed of the study by the head athletic trainers. Athletes agreeing to participate were required to complete an injury information form and the Self-Motivation Inventory. The head athletic trainers recorded injury information, attendance to rehabilitation, and made judgments regarding each athletes' adherence to rehabilitation.Adherence was measured four different ways (i.e., attendance rates, trainer judgments, trainer rankings, and a combination of the previous three to create an overall adherence measure). The results of this study are inconclusive, due to the fact that the different adherence measures did not agree for each independent measure. The results, however, suggest that self-motivation and certain non-psychological variables (i.e., academic class, scholarship status, and injury severity) may serve as predictors of injured athletes' adherence to rehabilitation.

This study examined the applicability of the Sport Commitment Model for a group of elite, professional athletes. The model proposes that an athlete's commitment will increase as sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities increase and will decrease with an increase in involvement opportunities. The influence of identification as an athlete, a determinant of commitment not included in the original model, was also examined. One hundred and eighty three professional football players from the Canadian Football League (CFL) (n = 121) and National Football League (NFL) (n = 69) participated in the study. Each subject completed a modified version of the original questionnaire developed to test the constructs in the Sport Commitment Model (Scanlan, Simons, Carpenter, Schmidt, & Keeler, 1993) during a team meeting. Internal consistency reliabilities for the final items in all seven scales were acceptable. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated marginal overall fit (AGFI = 0.757) demonstrating good construct validity and discriminant validity for each scale. Zero-order correlations between commitment and its predictor constructs were significant and in the hypothesized direction for all predictor constructs except social constraints. The correlation between commitment and social constraints was negative and nonsignificant. The simultaneous regression analysis results found the predictor constructs accounted for 38% of the variance in commitment. Identification uniquely accounted for the most variance followed by enjoyment, involvement alternatives, and involvement opportunities. Only personal investments and social constraints did not contribute a significant amount of unique variance to sport commitment. The importance and meaning of the relationships between commitment and its determinants for professional athletes are discussed, as well as directions for future research.

Study Design. Cross-sectional survey among athletes competing at the collegiate level in basketball, swimming, and track and field, as well as a matched nonathletic control group. Objective. To compare the prevalence of low back pain between sports: basketball, swimming, and track and field, as well as nonathletic control group. Summary of Background Data. With conflicting reports, it is not clear whether athletes are at higher risk for low back pain when compared to nonathletic counterparts. Some literature has found that low back pain was less common in former elite athletes when compared to nonathletes; however, much of the literature supports that athletes experience more low back pain. Methods. Self-reported questionnaire on low back pain adapted for sports based on the Nordic questionnaires for musculoskeletal symptoms. Responders were 10 basketball players, 57 swimmers, 47 track and field athletes and 382 controls. Results. The main findings of the current study support previous literature displaying a greater prevalence of low back experienced in athletes when compared to age-and-sex matched controls. This study found a significant relationship of reported low back pain as age and weight increased. Conclusions. Athletes have a greater prevalence of low back pain when compared to their less athletic peers. A larger sample size could suggest a significant relationship between the prevalence of low back pain and training volume, training season and sport.

Social support has a great impact on injured NCAA athletes' complete psychological and physical recovery. When individuals, such as the coach, athletic trainer, teammates, and family, incorporate social support in the recovery process the injured athlete's attitude and belief system is positively influenced. The coach and athletic trainer have been specifically researched and proven to be influential in certain types of social support, but the family has not been significantly studied in the past. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the six different types of social support given by the family in comparison to the social support given by the head coach, athletic trainer, and teammates to the injured NCAA Dl athlete regarding the athlete's satisfaction level of each type of support provided, as well as how each support contributed to the athlete's recovery. An additional purpose is to examine the quality of the six different types of social support given by the family. This study was carried out by a quantitative survey (Modified Form of the Social Support Survey) in which NCAA athletes from a private, Dl institution who met specific criteria were the subjects. The results were analyzed through inferential statistics using multiple one-way ANOV As. The results showed according to the athlete, the family and athletic trainer provided the highest levels of all six types of social support compared to the coach and teammates. The coach was the least influential in the social support network according to the athlete. In conclusion, the family provides an integral role within all types of social support. The family should be included in the rehabilitation process of the athlete for a healthy psychological and physical recovery of the injured NCAA athlete.

The competitive sporting environment provides an ideal opportunity to examine the concept of psychological momentum. The aim of this thesis is to further develop the issues raised by the momentum literature through the application of an eclectic range of research approaches. Study One examined positive and negative experiences for successful and unsuccessful performances within a population of elite middle and long distance runners. A qualitative design revealed that there were differences between the number of positive and negative experiences exhibited for the two performances. More specifically, more positive experiences were found for the successful performance and negative experiences for the unsuccessful performance. Personal and situational variables, such as confidence, goals, anxiety and attributions, were examined and it was concluded that the athletes' interpretations of experiences may be related to positive and negative momentum states. The second study examined in more detail the relationship between positive and negative experiences. It also attempted to gain a greater understanding of perceived momentum by tracking momentum shifts over time between competing tennis players. A diverse approach to data collection and analysis allowed for comparisons between competing players to be made. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that winning the first point in a game resulted in more games being won, compared to losing the first point. Content and frequency analysis was also carried out based on interview data. Results indicated that differences existed between the winners and losers. In particular, more positive experiences were exhibited by the winners and more negative experiences by the losers. More in-depth case studies were used to gain a more detailed insight into momentum shifts. Each match examined told a unique story, however similarities were found. There were two main findings, firstly losers identified more key momentum moments than winners. Secondly, questionnaire data revealed divergent patterns for perceived status over a range of parameters (e.g. fatigue) between each winner and loser. In combination these findings offered further support for the differentiated existence of momentum within sports competition. The final study considered the notion of momentum from a more holistic perspective and utilised a longitudinal methodology to examine both on and off court activities of a female tennis player on the professional circuit. A departure from the previous post-positivistic paradigm lead to a case study being produced which identified fluctuation of momentum both during and between performances. Results adapt well to recent models of momentum and are discussed in terms of each construct. The findings from the thesis support the existence of psychological momentum and contribute towards a reformulated model of momentum. The model draws upon findings from the present thesis and also incorporates findings from previous momentum research. Finally, the unique approach of combining traditional quantitative methods with more recent qualitative techniques highlighted concerns over the rigidity of past research and suggests how new lines of enquiry might be used in future research.

This thesis investigated the attitudes and the behaviors in the main sport environment of 53 intercollegiate athletes. Two instruments were developed, administered, and combined to give three measures of the "true play" characteristics of the subjects who were members of the men's golf, men's basketball, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's tennis and women's volleyball teams at the University of the Pacific. Results were determined by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences: Update 7-9. ANOVA and Scheffe's post hoc test revealed, at the .05 level, that female athletes scored higher in true play characteristics than did male athletes; that star athletes scored higher in true play characteristics than did regular and substitute athletes; and that the sport of volleyball scored higher in true play characteristics than did the sport of golf.

Physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle, but participating in athletic activities like team sports can lead to injury. This study was designed to find the differences in types of high school sports injuries and how frequently these injuries occur among different sports and between males and females. A survey was given to members of the football, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball teams of a central Appalachian high school. The highest rate of injury was found in girls’ basketball at 86.7%, followed by football at 85.2%, boys’ basketball at 70.6%, softball and volleyball each at 69.2%, and baseball at 33.3%. Significant differences were also found between the most prevalent types of injuries in each sport. Differences in types of injuries were reported by male and female athletes who participated in comparable sports such as boys’ and girls’ basketball and softball and baseball. More research into why these differences exist could result in more individualized prevention strategies for high school athletes.

The major theme of the current thesis was the definition, measurement, and development of perfectionism in elite junior sport. The first purpose was to examine the psychometric properties associated with Hewitt and Flett’s (1991) Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS-HF) when complete by a sample of elite junior athletes. In study one, a confirmatory factor analysis failed to support the original structure of 45-item MPS-HF. Subsequent exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a more parsimonious 15-item factor structure representing self-oriented (SOP), socially prescribed (SPP), and other-oriented perfectionism (OOP). Having established a reconstituted version of the MPS-HF, a second purpose of the research programme was to consider the origins of perfectionism in elite junior athletes using a cross-sectional design. Initially, in study two a social learning model was supported, with 18%-26% of variance in athletes’ perfectionism predicted by parents’ perfectionism. Building upon this finding in study three, a structural equation model revealed that parenting styles, including empathy and psychological control, mediated the parent-athletic child SPP relationship. In study four, a significant pathway emerged between parents’ achievement goals and athletes’ dispositional perfectionism, offering support for a social expectations model of perfectionism development. Specifically, parents’ task and ego orientations were positively associated with athletes’ SOP. In contrast, athletes’ SPP was predicted by parents’ ego orientation. Study four also demonstrated the nature and form of motivational regulation associated with athletes’ SOP and SPP. That is, a pathway emerged between athletes’ SPP and controlled forms of regulation, while athletes’ SOP was correlated with self-determined and controlled motivation. Finally, in study five, the coach-created motivational climate accounted for approximately 19% of variance in athletes’ perfectionistic cognitions, highlighting the role of additional social agents in the development of athletes’ perfectionism. The results of this research programme contribute to existing knowledge of perfectionism by forwarding reliable measures of SOP and SPP for employment in sport, and revealing a complex array of pathways that underpin the development of perfectionism in elite junior athletes. Ultimately, by preventing the occurrence of such pathways, athletic children may be protected from the perils of perfectionism.

Those with an optimistic explanatory style have generally been linked with improved mental and physical health across a variety of chronic and serious conditions. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of explanatory style on sport related concussions. University varsity athletes (n = 348) from six interdependent team sports at two universities completed both the Attributional Style Questionnaire and the Sport History Questionnaire to examine personality variables and concussion rehabilitation. Overall, the findings indicated that explanatory style did not influence concussion recovery. However, it did effect concussion prevalence, with pessimists experiencing significantly more concussions. Furthermore, various gender differences were demonstrated for concussion prevalence and recovery. The current results help understand the psychology of concussions, as well as concussion prevention efforts and management strategies.

This thesis is the culmination of a program of research which initially began in 1995. It reflects a major professional interest in the imaging of sports injuries which developed gradually over the 10 year period between 1992 to 2001, based upon previous clinical experience and expertise in the management of musculoskeletal injuries and their anatomical and pathomechanical origins. The central theme of study relates to the use of cross-sectional imaging techniques to investigate the pathoanatomical basis for groin pain in althletes with particular reference to professional soccer players with chronic groin pain. The current thesis is based around two key postulates. Firstly, that most of the commonly diagnosed causes of groin pain in professional athletes are anatomically and functionally linked and, secondly, that modern cross-sectional imaging can demonstrate both the correct diagnosis and the underlying biomechanical causes. The program of study consists of three different but linked project themes. The first investigates the scope of the problem, i.e. the differential diagnosis and prevalence of groin pain in professional soccer players. The second investigates the precise "normal" anatomy, i.e. the gross topographical anatomy of the pubic symphysis and parasymphyseal regions as actually exists rather than the regional anatomy that appears in classical anatomical texts. The third builds upon the first two projects and, investigates the underlying pathomechanical processes using magnetic resonance imaging. The study results suggest that a unifying mechanism of injury exists which partly explains the diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties that occur in athletes with groin pain. It also demonstrates that better understanding of the true pubic symphyseal anatomy allows a more accurate diagnosis to be made and that magnetic resonance imaging can demonstrate the relevant underlying pathoanatomy. The thesis adds significantly to the body of scientific knowledge related to this important sports-related, clinical condition.

A comparison of heart rate viability and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) characteristics was performed in 20 athletes and 12 age-matched sedentary controls (CTRL) (22 +/- 2.4 yrs). More specifically, this study examined the role of regular physical activity on the breathing frequency (BF)---RSA amplitude response curve comparing varsity swimmers (SW) to endurance runners (RU) to test the hypothesis that a locomotor-respiratory entrainment resulting from the water-immersion breathing pattern of swimmers would alter their respiratory related cardiac vagal integrative response. Spectral power components of HRV were computed from R-R interval sequences. Five-minute recordings were performed with subjects breathing either at their spontaneous breathing rate, at four breathing cycles less (M4) and four cycles more (P4) than spontaneous. Amplitude and phase of RSA were computed from the sinusoid fitted to the instantaneous heart rate within each breath while the gain of the RSA response was obtained from the slope of the RSA amplitude versus BF. Developing a scientific understanding of the breast support implications for the female recreational athlete will make a significant contribution to the breast biomechanics literature, provide valuable information to bra designers and help athletes make informed decisions about their breast support requirements. The work in this thesis determined the effect of a high and low breast support condition on biomechanical and perceptual variables during steady-state running, intermittent exercise and vertical jumping in a population of larger-breasted female recreational athletes. In order to assess breast kinematics an appropriate method of assessing bra fit was needed. Within this programme of research the use of best-fit criteria was first developed and then demonstrated that traditional bra fit methods overestimate band size (76% of participants) and underestimate cup size (84% of participants). During all activity modes a well-fitted high support bra significantly (p < 0.05) reduced breast kinematics and increased breast comfort. For steady-state running, alterations in lower-extremity biomechanics led to more distance being covered per minute (3.08 m; p = 0.006) and therefore a potential for improved performance when participants ran with high breast support. More acute knee flexion during sprinting (p = 0.008) and less sagittal plane thorax range of motion (p < 0.044) in the high breast support condition during the intermittent treadmill protocol could also benefit running performance. Increases in the range of motion of upper-extremity variables during treadmill activity were related to increases in some breast kinematic variables (r = 0.465 to 0.742); therefore certain individuals may require greater breast support than others. With increased breast kinematics there was a trend towards participants landing from vertical jumps with lower ground reaction forces coupled with increased thorax, thigh and knee flexion (r = 0.564 to 0.607). This suggests participants attempted to soften their landing, which may affect subsequent performance. Vertical jumping and sprinting elicited the highest magnitudes of vertical (0.08 m) and mediolateral (0.03 m) breast displacement respectively, questioning whether steady-state running is the most effective activity mode for testing bra efficacy. The reduction of anterioposterior breast kinematics should also be a consideration for bra design as they related most closely to breast comfort and biomechanical variables across all activity modes. Knowledge of the breast support implications for larger-breasted female recreational athletes was progressed in this thesis and bras offering high multi-planar support are promoted as they were found to be beneficial for performance within the activities investigated.

Athletes can approach competition positively, as a challenge, or negatively, as a threat. The theory of challenge and threat states in athletes (TCTSA) outlines that a challenge state, contrary to a threat state, is characterised by high levels of self-efficacy and perceived control, approach goals, positive emotions, a helpful interpretation of emotional state and a cardiovascular reactivity pattern of increased cardiac output and decreased total peripheral resistance. The aim of this thesis was to examine relations between these cognitive, affective, and physiological components of challenge and threat states in a sport setting; research in sport have mostly examined these components separately. Five studies were conducted to examine this aim. These comprised a qualitative analysis of athletes‟ interviews about an upcoming competition, a cross-sectional questionnaire study, two studies where self-report data were associated with cardiovascular responses to an upcoming competition or previous competition, and a case study. Overall, the cognitive and affective components are somewhat supportive of the TCTSA, with a positive relation between self-efficacy, perceived control and approach goals. Threat appraisal and anxiety were positively predicted by avoidance goals. Most of the physiological findings, however, were not in line with the predictions of the TCTSA. Specifically, participants who had high levels of self-efficacy appeared to be physiologically threatened by an upcoming competition. There was no consistent relation between the cognitive, affective, and physiological components regarding previous competitions. Temporal patterning may be one of the main confounding factors for the inconsistent findings as the relations between physiological, cognitive, and affective components all change in the lead up to competition. This thesis makes an original contribution to stress research by exploring the combination of cognitive, affective, and physiological components outlined by the TCTSA using a holistic understanding of how athletes approach competition.

Examine the associations between Challenge, Threat, cortisol response and sport performance, e. Examine self-report of emotions direction and intensity experienced during a sport performance in regard to Challenge and Threat and f. Examine Challenge and Threat in combination with each other in regard to sport performance. These 6 aims were addressed in 3 different empirical studies. Study 1 used a cross sectional study design to explore the validity and reliability of an existing self-report measure of Challenge and Threat. Participants were gym users (n=200, Mage=24.91) and asked to complete the self-report measure before a dart-throwing competition. Study 2 comprised of three different stages. Stage 1; a cross sectional study design to examine the content validity of a pool of existing self-report items to measure Challenge and Threat in a range of athletes (n=25, Mage=22.00). Participants comprised of male and female athletes engaged in various sports (football, n=6, cricket, n=2, swimming, n=5, tennis, n=1, rugby, n=6, netball, n=3, basketball, n=2.). Stage 2, used a cross sectional study design to further examine the construct validity of the remaining items from stage 1. This stage used principle components analysis (PCA) to determine whether Challenge and Threat self-report items were grouped in a particular way (Kline, 1994). Participants were competitive runners (n=197, Mage=37.11) and asked to complete the self-report measure regarding Challenge and Threat before competition. Stage 3 used a cross sectional study design to explore the validity and reliability of the self-report measure of Challenge and Threat developed in stages 1-2 in competitive runners (n=147, Mage =30.06), using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine how well the data total fitted the proposed hypothetical model. Finally a quasi-experimental study (study 3) examined the association between Challenge and Threat and shooting performance. This study explored the Challenge and Threat self-report measure and its relationship with performance, emotions and physiological responses. Participants in this study comprised of university student and staff members (n=102, Mage =27.11). Results from study 1 suggested that the existing self-report measure of Challenge and Threat utilised was not suitable for use within a sport context. Results from study 2, stage 1, revealed a pool of self-report items that athletes described as applicable and relevant to their sports performance. Results from study 2, stage 2, suggested that items identified in study 2, stage 1 represented a two component solution, one associated with Threat and the other Challenge. Results from study 2, stage 3 suggested that a 12 item self-report measure was suitable for use within a sport context and that Challenge has a positive association with sport performance. Finally, study 3, suggested that the self-report measure of Challenge and Threat developed in study 2 (stages 1-3) was suitable for use within a sport context. Results from study 3 also suggest that a mixture of Challenge and Threat can have implications for performance outcome. Emotions reported were shown to have associations with Challenge and Threat self-report, as suggested by The Theory of Challenge and Threat States in Athletes (TCTSA). The study findings showed that physiological associations with Challenge and Threat were equivocal. Limitations to the present research programme and directions for future research are discussed.
