Sterculia urens Roxb. commonly known as the "Karaya Gum Tree" or "Indian tragacanth" is known for its medicinal properties and ecological significance. It is a medium sized tree which attains height of around 15–20 meters and is enormously bushy in shape. Karaya gum has been used commercially as an additive or alternative to gum treagacanth for many years. Sterculia urens is an important plant of Rajasthan and it has several traditional and pharmacological uses. Plant is in danger and its seed collection is difficult. Study about its uses, measure to conserve and allied aspects are undertaken

The present study was intended to explore the pharmacological significance of the crude root extract of Sterculia urens Roxb. Further the bio-active compounds were isolated and characterized using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Soxhlet extraction apparatus was utilized for isolation of the chemical constituents from the root using a series of solvents such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. The pharmacological activities such as inhibition of DPPH radical, α-amylase enzyme activity, albumin denaturation along with antibacterial and thrombolytic activities. The isola

Nine trees of Sterculia urens were selected for experimentation. Out of nine trees, three were used for gum tapping through semicircular blazing and remaining six trees were tapped through gum inducer technique. After one month, each blaze and hole made on the trees were again treated following same technique/method for gum collection. Treatment was done eleven times at an interval of one month during the period of experiment. To know the effect of treatment and treatment interval on gum yield, collection of gum was carried out from each tree separately at monthly interval just before beginnin

Destructive and unsustainable harvesting practices led to a decline of Sterculia urens (Gum karaya) trees from some of the forest areas of Madhya Pradesh. Therefore to assess the current status of S.urens trees, seven districts of the state were surveyed. Results revealed that gum karaya collection is done by inflicting multiple blazes on Sterculia trees. The intensity of harvesting was found progressively high in Sheopur district, followed by Umaria and Damoh districts. Percentage of healthy trees is declining. Methods adopted by local gum collectors are unsustainable and of serious concern l

The gum-yielding species Sterculia urens Roxb., known for its valuable ‘Karaya Gum,’ plays a crucial role in various industries. However, unscientific exploitation, poor natural regeneration and inadequate seedling recruitment have led to a significant decline in its natural populations. A pilot study was conducted across ten sites in different forest divisions of Madhya Pradesh to assess the natural regeneration status. Study revealed that overall natural regeneration status was poor. Based on field observations, the study recommends the inclusion of S. urens in plantation programs of State F

The present study describes biochemical changes taking place during seed germination of Sterculia urens. The levels of proteins, total amino acids, reducing sugars, total soluble sugars and lipids were studied during various stages of seed germination (0-15 days). Total protein content was decreased in cotyledons during seed germination while free amino acid content increased to its maximum extent by 9th day of germination and reverse trend thereafter. The levels of reducing sugars and total soluble sugars increased till 6th day of germination and decreased thereafter. The lipid content was hi
