This journal describes a study on the structural effects of DI diesel engine conventional piston and modified pistons. To enhance the combustion efficiency of the engine conventional piston has been modified as shallow depth piston bowl with swirling grooves on the piston crown. Three different widths (5.5mm, 6.5mm and 7.5mm) and constant depth (00 to 50) swirling grooves added on the shallow depth combustion chambered piston crown. The conventional piston and modified pistons has been modeled in CATIA software and structural analysis done in ANSYS 14. In structural analysis observed that deformation for the modified pistons are same and negligible as compared to the conventional piston.

By fixing pistons of different diameters with 6 gripping nails, we clarified deformation of piston rings and stress during tightening by simulation based on the finite element method (FEM) as part of development of a universal holding mechanism to insert it into the cylinder block automatically. Nonlinear FEM was used to analyze slidingat contact parts between the ring and the gripping nail when fastening the piston ring. Final defohnation of the piston ring and stress on different parts were verified in detail. We confirmed that insertion of the piston by this method is possible.

Modern Automobiles expect a high performance from its engines, which in turn places its requirements on the piston and cylinder components. Hence the piston has to deal with harsher, and tougher thermal and mechanical conditions. It has to undergo higher operating temperatures and pressures as well as higher speeds and at the same time keeping a check on the emissions. Pistons play a key role in increasing engine efficiency by reducing weight and frictional losses. This has made it essential to devise and search unique and creative concepts and materials for Pistons repeatedly, which offers what the engine demands. In this work Aluminium Alloy-4032 has been selected as the piston material of a 4-Stroke Diesel Engine and the piston rings are made of grey cast iron and alloy steel. Piston is designed by analytical methods taking both thermal and structural effects into consideration, then modelled on CATIA V5 and the analysis of structural deformation due to thermal stresses has been done using Finite Element Analysis of Steady State Thermal and its effect on static structure using Analysis software ANSYS

Piston slap force is one of the main sources of mechanical engine noise. To obtain a more accurate determination of the piston slap force and minimize piston slap noise, a new simulation model that considers dynamic clearance of the piston skirt and liner has been established in this study. The skirt-liner dynamic clearance is caused mainly by the elastic deformation and thermal deformation of the piston. Comparing three different models, it was found that the impact of dynamic clearance on the piston slap force is reflected mainly in the medium-high frequency, which is the sensitive frequency of the slap noise. Therefore, it is necessary to consider dynamic clearance in the simulation model. In addition, the mechanisms behind the dynamic clearance effect on fluid lubrication, piston dynamics, and piston slap noise were observed. In particular, three typical structural parameters in piston dynamics (the piston pin offset, piston-liner clearance, and piston skirt profile) were studied. The analyses provide guidance for the design of low-noise engines.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review and to provide a dipper understanding of what happens to piston rings and cylinder surfaces when manufacturing errors depicted, such as waviness and straightness. The mechanism of friction and the piston ring structural integrity, due to the surface irregularities, are analyzed either for smooth ring surface or for artificial textured, while piston ring floats into the piston groove or not. Design/methodology/approach – In this work two tribological models of a piston ring- cylinder package are presented using CFD analysis. Initially, the piston ring is considered as a secured ring in the groove of piston (secured ring) while in second model, the piston ring floats into the piston groove (free ring). Findings – Increasing the number of waves across the piston ring thickness, the structural integrity of the ring is strongly influenced. Piston ring with surface texturing reduces the mean friction force, under the consideration of cylinder straightness. The gas leaks due to existence of the ring gap, affects significantly the maximum mechanical stresses. Originality/value – The novelty of this paper is the analysis of manufacturing errors, such as waviness and straightness either for smooth or for artificial textured piston ring. In particular, the piston ring structural integrity investigated while chamber gas pressure leaks through the ring gap or not. The number of the waves, their amplitude and the fluid velocity are also taken into consideration.

Dynamic lubrication analyses for a spherical pump, consisting of a piston and cylinder, are presented. Contact forces between piston and cylinder are modeled first using an equivalent ball-on-plane model. Both the effects of external loads and operating conditions are considered in a dynamic elastohydrodynamic lubrication model, which is derived from Reynolds equation. Two assumed time-dependent sine-wave and square-wave loads are applied to the model. Fluid film thicknesses are estimated using the model and assumed loads, effects of different structural, and operational parameters, such as piston diameter, radial clearance, applied load, piston speed, lubricant viscosity, and surface roughness, on fluid film thickness are investigated. Fluid film thickness reactions of more realistic smooth and continuous sine wave loads are compared to discontinuous ones in order to verify whether or not assumed ideal loads are acceptable and reliable. Results indicate that piston diameter, speed, lubricant viscosity have positive relations on the dynamic lubrication performance, and increasing these values can improve the dynamic lubrication regime. While the parameters such as radial clearance, applied load, and surface roughness have the verse effects. Furthermore, the impacts of all the above parameters on fluid film are different either. These obtained results can be used to effectively optimize spherical pump lubrication performance.

Findings Research results show that there are two serious cavitation regions: one is the pressure transition region of the valve plate that is near the top dead center, and the other is the low-pressure region of the piston that is near the low-pressure transition area. Moreover, the more serious cavitation area is on the valve plate region. Originality/value The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to detect the cavitation characteristics of the water piston motor. Besides, it is deduced that valve-plate structure optimization is more important than pistons to reduce cavitation influence.

The work performance of piston-cylinder liner system is affected by the lubrication condition and the secondary motion of the piston. Therefore, more and more attention has been paid to the secondary motion and lubrication of the piston. In this paper, the Jakobson-Floberg-Olsson (JFO) boundary condition is employed to describe the rupture and reformation of oil film. The average Reynolds equation of skirt lubrication is solved by the finite difference method (FDM). The secondary motion of piston-connecting rod system is modeled; the trajectory of the piston is calculated by the Runge-Kutta method. By considering the inertia of the connecting rod, the influence of the longitudinal and horizontal profiles of piston skirt, the offset of the piston pin, and the thermal deformation on the secondary motion and lubrication performance is investigated. The parabolic longitudinal profile, the smaller top radial reduction and ellipticities of the middle-convex piston, and the bigger bottom radial reduction and ellipticities can effectively reduce the secondary displacement and velocity, the skirt thrust, friction, and the friction power loss. The results show that the connecting rod inertia, piston skirt profile, and thermal deformation have important influence on secondary motion and lubrication performance of the piston.

Vibration behaviour of an internal combustion engine depends on rigid body inertial dynamics, structural modal characteristics of its elastic members, tribological behaviour of loadbearing contacts, and piston-cylinder interactions. Therefore, it is essential to use a multi-physics approach that addresses all these physical properties in a single integrative model as presented in this paper. This approach can be regarded as holistic and a good aid for detailed design. Particular attention is paid to the critical elements in the system, such as load-bearing conjunctions (crankshaft main bearings) and piston-cylinder wall interactions. Another important feature is the integrated analysis across the physics of motion from microscale fluid film formation to submillimetre structural deformations and onto large displacements of inertial members. In order to succeed in predictions within sensible industrial time scales, analytical methods have been used as far as possible rather than numerical approaches. Model predictions show good agreement with fired engine test data.

Abstract The connecting rod, as an important part in internal combustion engines, has been most widely used in automotive industry, and its main function is to transfer the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotatory motion of the crankshaft. In this study, fatigue analysis of the connecting rod is performed numerically for different engine speeds. With this aim, it is attempted to reduce the weight of the connecting rod by choosing the low density and high strength of GFRP and CFRP composite materials instead of structural steel. In this way, it is possible to improve the engine efficiency with saving unnecessary balancing weights as well as reducing the cost of the connecting rod. In the current study, the connecting rod was modeled using Solidworks software, and its CAD model was transferred to the ANSYS/Workbench software for Finite Element Analyses (FEA). In FEA, fatigue analyses were performed to determine fatigue parameters such as alternating stress, deformation, fatigue life and safety factor according to Soderberg’s fatigue model. Results from this study showed that alternating stress and safety factor reached a critical value between piston pin end and crank end near to the piston pin end. Alternating stress values of the GFRP and CFRP connecting rods were much lower than those of structural steel rod. In contrast to reduction of the weight by 1/5, fatigue life of the connecting rod with structural steel material was much greater than those of GFRP and CFRP providing a higher safety factor compared with composite materials.

A theoretical model is developed for the analysis of piston secondary motion. Based on this model, the slap force of a specific L6 diesel engine was compared when considering different boundary conditions, such as lubricating oil on cylinder liner, surface roughness, deformation of cylinder liner and piston skirt. It is concluded that it is necessary to consider the secondary motion of piston in the analysis of the inner excitation for an internal combustion engine. A more comprehensive consideration of the boundary condition (i.e., more close to the actual condition) will lead to a smaller maximum slap force, and among all boundary conditions considered in this paper, the structural deformation of the piston skirt and cylinder liner is the most influential factor. The theoretical model developed and findings obtained in this study will benefit the future analysis and design of advanced internal combustion engine structures.

Torque, as an important indicator of the engine, is the reflection of performance of cylinder-embedded piston engine. In power stroke, torque varies at different moments, so if the impact of structural parameters on torque needs to be analyzed, the values of torque in power stroke need to be added together and divide lasting time. The average effective torque is the average of the torque generated by explosive force during the entire power stroke, which overcomes the disadvantages of the instantaneous torque which can not reflect the changes in power process. Therefore, the influence of each structure size on the force transmission performance can be analyzed with maximizing the average effective torque. It is concluded that for increasing the average effective torque, the radius of the hinge center trajectory of cap R should be increased, and the length from rotating center O to the trajectory of piston H should be decreased. The length of rod L has little influence on the average effective torque. However, if there is a too large D-value between R and H, the rod may deflect seriously, so that the piston side force increases, causing the piston wear and tear. So the values of R and H should be selected with specified conditions in the design.

In this paper, dynamic instability behavior of a linear viscoelastic panel in supersonic flow is investigated. The quasi-steady piston theory of supersonic flow is employed for the aerodynamic pressure. The partial differential governing equation of isotropic flat panel is derived by introducing viscoelastic structural damping based on Kelvins model. The panel governing equation is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations via the Galerkin approach. First-order state equations are afterwards obtained and solved by means of a standard eigenvalue calculation. The dynamic instability of viscoelstic panels is predicted by the feature of characteristic roots. The phenomena of coupled-mode flutter without structural damping and single-mode flutter with structural damping induced by the supersonic flow are observed for the different dynamic pressure values. Results indicate that structural damping plays an important role for the stability of panels flutter. Flutter threshold keeps decreasing as viscoelastic structural damping is increased.

Chemotaxis, mediated by methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein (MCP) receptors, plays an important role in the ecology of bacterial populations. This paper presents the first crystallographic analysis of the structure and ligand-induced conformational changes of the periplasmic tandem Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) sensing domain (PTPSD) of a characterized MCP chemoreceptor. Analysis of the complex of theCampylobacter jejuniTlp3 PTPSD with isoleucine (a chemoattractant) revealed that the PTPSD is a dimer in the crystal. The two ligand-binding sites are located in the membrane-distal PAS domains on the faces opposite to the dimer interface. Mutagenesis experiments show that the five strongly conserved residues that stabilize the main-chain moiety of isoleucine are essential for binding, suggesting that the mechanism by which this family of chemoreceptors recognizes amino acids is highly conserved. Although the fold and mode of ligand binding of the PTPSD are different from the aspartic acid receptor Tar, the structural analysis suggests that the PTPSDs of amino-acid chemoreceptors are also likely to signal by a piston displacement mechanism. The PTPSD fluctuates between piston (C-terminal helix) `up' and piston `down' states. Binding of an attractant to the distal PAS domain locks it in the closed form, weakening its association with the proximal domain and resulting in the transition of the latter into an open form, concomitant with a downward (towards the membrane) 4 Å piston displacement of the C-terminal helix. In vivo, this movement would generate a transmembrane signal by driving a downward displacement of the transmembrane helix 2 towards the cytoplasm.
