Larval transport is fundamental to several ecological processes, yet it remains unresolved for the majority of systems. We define larval transport, and describe its components, namely, larval behavior and the physical transport mechanisms accounting for advection, diffusion, and their variability. We then discuss other relevant processes in larval transport, including swimming proficiency, larval duration, accumulation in propagating features, episodic larval transport, and patchiness and spatial variability in larval abundance. We address challenges and recent approaches associated with understanding larval transport, including autonomous sampling, imaging, -omics, and the exponential growth in the use of poorly tested numerical simulation models to examine larval transport and population connectivity. Thus, we discuss the promises and pitfalls of numerical modeling, concluding with recommendations on moving forward, including a need for more process-oriented understanding of the mechanisms of larval transport and the use of emergent technologies.

Nuclear medicine-based imaging techniques can provide an estimation of nigrostriatal tract denervation based on radionucleotide uptake in the distal presynaptic terminals of dopaminergic neurons. Although unhelpful in differentiating between differing etiologies of denervation in varied neurodegenerative disorders associated with parkinsonism, this imaging is justified in situations in which parkinsonism is believed to be drug-induced or functional or in cases in which subclinical parkinsonism is suspected. The most common clinical situation in which dopamine transporter imaging is helpful is in the patient on neuroleptic therapy that cannot be stopped who has developed parkinsonism. Dopamine transporter imaging should be normal in drug-induced tremor.

Annotation:
Perioperative management of a patient with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is of paramount importance in neuroanesthesiology. Should this clinical emergency remain unaddressed, disability and death will ensue. Suboptimal care of a patient with elevated ICP is associated with avoidable morbidity and predictable mortality unless timely medical interventions, a focused history, targeted physical findings and a high degree of clinical suspicion confirmed by selective imaging result in medical stabilization and more definitive neurosurgical intervention. This may require interinstitutional transport. Understanding the physiologic and pathologic concepts that underlie elevated ICP permit anticipatory interventions to avert inexorable deterioration. The etiology of elevated intracranial pressure is often multifactorial. The deleterious effects of rising ICP demand a clear understanding of the relationship between ICP, mean arterial pressure (MAP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), and cerebral autoregulation. Maintaining optimal CPP to prevent cerebral ischemia is the neuroanesthesiologist’s ultimate goal while managing a patient with an elevated ICP.

After a historical account of the evolution which led to the concept of Molecular Electronics, the “Hybrid Molecular Electronics” approach (that is, molecules connected to nanosized metallic electrodes) is discussed. The different types of transport (one-step, two-step with different forms of tunnelling) are described, including the case where the molecule is paramagnetic (Kondo resonance). Several molecular achievements are presented: wires, diodes, memory cells, field-effect transistors, switches, using molecules, but also carbon nanotubes. A spin-off result is the possibility of imaging Molecular Orbitals. The emerging field of molecular spintronics is presented. Besides hybrid devices, examples are given of electronic functionalities using ensembles of molecules, either in solution (logical functions) or in the solid state (memory elements). The relation with the domain of Quantum Computing is presented, including the particular domain of Quantum Hamiltonian Computing. The chapter finishes by an introduction to molecular machines, with the problem of the directional control of their motion.

The severity of ballistic trauma is dependent upon multiple factors including bullet type, velocity, tissue type penetrated, and energy transfer. Patient management needs a considered approach with careful assessment, appropriate imaging and directed treatment of the wounds found. Triage, treatment and transport form the framework of effective prehospital care. In the emergency department a rapid primary survey is essential to reveal any injuries that need immediate intervention. The decision to operate and nature of surgery is determined by the patient’s suspected injuries, physiological condition and expertise available with some patients benefiting from damage control resuscitation and surgery. Indications for intensive care admission include the need for ongoing organ support, cardiovascular instability, and injuries that require close observation. Attention should be paid to cardiovascular status, coagulation, nutrition, thromboprophylaxis, infective issues, and management of specific injuries. Patients may require protracted hospital stays and extensive reconstructive surgery. The psychological and social impact of these injuries should not be underestimated.

Chapter 7 reviews empirical findings that allow consideration of biological and environmental influences on human behavior from an evolutionary perspective (e.g., gene-culture coevolution) and from a perspective of individual development (e.g., gene-culture interaction). It also reviews imaging genetic studies that link genes with brain functional organization. It introduces a cultural neuroscience paradigm for investigating genetic influences on the coupling of brain activity and culture by presenting two studies that examined how serotonin transporter functional polymorphism and oxytocin receptor gene moderate the association between interdependence and brain activities involved in self-reflection and empathy. These studies illustrate a new approach to understanding the manner with which culture interacts with gene to shape human brain activity.

Lewy body dementia (LBD) is the second most common form of neurocognitive disorder after Alzheimer’s disease and covers two related diagnoses: Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia. Despite being a common disorder, diagnosis outside expert academic centers remains a significant challenge. The core pathological feature of LBD is the cortical Lewy body; however, many cases will have coexistent Alzheimer disease pathology. Genetic risk factors for LBD include mutations in genes for alpha-synuclein (SNCA) and galactocerbrosidase (GBA). Dopamine transporter imaging remains the most sensitive but platforms for measuring alpha-synuclein are being developed. Current therapies focus on symptomatic relief but experimental cell and animal models are providing new insights for the development of disease-modifying therapeutics.

This chapter describes how the transnationally oriented elite and upper-class urban Indian youth are negotiating their everyday experiences with globalization. It shows how the college-age elite youth psychologically imagine themselves as being world-class citizens not just by going abroad but also by reimagining new forms of Indianness through their active participation in specific cultural practices of watching American media, shopping at exclusive malls, and constructing emancipatory narratives of globalization. The transnational urban youth’s narratives are hybrid and are organized around an Indianness that is mobile, multicultural, connected to consumption practices, and crosses borders easily. Being a global Indian means displaying a kind of transnational cultural difference that has the right currency and credibility and that can be transported to other countries, where it is accepted as legitimate, valid, and as having a world-class standing. Selected parts of Indian culture can be adopted in their travels and study-abroad stints.

This part describes the agent-based and computational model for Agent_Zero and demonstrates its capacity for generative minimalism. It first explains the replicability of the model before offering an interpretation of the model by imagining a guerilla war like Vietnam, Afghanistan, or Iraq, where events transpire on a 2-D population of contiguous yellow patches. Each patch is occupied by a single stationary indigenous agent, which has two possible states: inactive and active. The discussion then turns to Agent_Zero's affective component and an elementary type of bounded rationality, as well as its social component, with particular emphasis on disposition, action, and pseudocode. Computational parables are then presented, including a parable relating to the slaughter of innocents through dispositional contagion. This part also shows how the model can capture three spatially explicit examples in which affect and probability change on different time scales.

Annotation:
Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica is a voyage across time as well as space. The Argonauts encounter monsters, nymphs, shepherds, and kings who represent earlier stages of the cosmos or human society; they are given glimpses into the future, and themselves effect changes in the world through which they travel. Readers undergo a still more complex form of temporal transport, enabled not just to imagine themselves into the deep past, but to examine the layers of poetic and intellectual history from which Apollonius crafts his poem. Taking its lead from ancient critical preoccupations with poetry’s ethical significance, this book argues that the Argonautica produces an understanding of time and temporal experience which ramifies variously in readers’ lives. When describing the people and creatures who occupied the past, Apollonius extends readers’ capacity for empathetic response to the worlds inhabited by others. In the ecphrasis of Jason’s cloak and the account of Jason’s conversations with Medea, readers are invited to scrutinize the relationship between exempla and temporal change, while climactic episodes such as Jason’s battle with the Earthborn and the taking of the Golden Fleece explore links between perceptions and their temporal situation. Running through the poem, and through the readings that comprise this book, is an attention to the intellectual potential of the ‘untimely’, objects, experience, and language which do not belong straightforwardly to a particular time. Treatment of such phenomena is crucial to the poem’s aspiration to inform and expand readers’ understanding of themselves as subjects in and of history.
