The Hepialidae species of Trinidad and Tobago are documented and two species are recognized. The new and monotypic genus Wallacella, gen. n., (Lepidoptera, Hepialidae) is erected to include Phassus guianensis Schaus of Guyana (Wallacella guianensis, comb. n.). The male holotype and genitalia are also illustrated for the first time. Potential generic affinities with Druceiella (Viette) and Pfitzneriana (Viette) are considered. Gymelloxes juliusboosi sp. n. is described from Trinidad and Tobago and compared to its congeneric species. The sternite VIII and male genitalia are diagnostic for this new species. The male holotype is deposited in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, UK.

New records and extensions of the distribution range of seven species of porcellanid crabs, representing four genera, are reported in the West Indian Islands: Megalobrachium mortenseni, M. poeyi, M. roseum, Pachycheles ackleianus, P. riisei, Petrolisthes rosariensis and Porcellana sayana. The analyzed species are deposited in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, and the American Museum of Natural History. It is provided new records from Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and The Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. Ivan Cohen, a Trinidadian tour guide from Savannah, Georgia, in a candid synopsis of cultural heritage tourism during a 2003 focus group interview, said: We have this saying in Trinidad. But there are no exceptions anywhere in the world, not even in Savannah. And the saying is, ‘The fools (F-O-O-L-S) [Mr. Cohen chose to spell it out] live O-F-F the damn fools!’ ‘THE FOOLS LIVE OFF THE DAMN FOOLS!’ It applies in Savannah. It applies in Trinidad. It applies in every city. And we would be damn fools if we expect white people to tell our stories. That's a damn fool idea. {Loud yells}. Let me finish. I conduct this African American History tour for the Civil Rights Museum. A couple of weeks ago, two white people got on the van. I discovered midway through that one of them was a part-time travel tour guide. I said, ‘Give me a critique of the tour; what did you think?’ And he said, ‘Well I learned a lot of things I didn't know.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but give me something critical; this is where you improve.’ He said, ‘You didn't say much about Oglethorpe!’ {Eruption of laughter}.

This paper focuses on the material study (radiocarbon dating, wood identification and strontium isotope analyses) of four large ‘India occidentali’ clubs, part of the founding collections of the Ashmolean Museum, in Oxford, and originally part of John Tradescant’s ‘Ark’, in Lambeth (1656). During the seventeenth century, the term ‘India occidentali/occidentales’ referred not only to the ‘West Indies’ (its literal translation), but to the Americas as a whole; hence, the Ashmolean clubs and, indeed, thecforty examples of similarly large, decorated clubs known in international museum collections had no firm provenance and lacked even the most basic information. Previous attempts at attribution, based on stylistic comparisons with nineteenth- to twentieth-century Brazilian and Guyanese clubs, have proved inconclusive given the unique features of this club style, raising the intriguing possibility that these may be exceptionally rare examples of ‘Island Carib’ (Kalinago) material culture, particularly as images of such clubs appear in seventeenth-century ethnographic accounts from the Lesser Antilles. This paper provides new data for these poorly known objects from early collections, revealing not only the type of wood from which they were carved (Platymisciumsp. andBrosimumcfguianense) and their probable dates of manufacture (c AD1300–1640), but also their possible provenance (strontium results are consistent with a possible range from Trinidad south to French Guiana).

Carlotta Maury (1874-1938) was a paleontologist who specialized in Tertiary mollusks. She was involved in confidential explorations for the oil industry as well as teaching and museum work. This paper—the first of a two-part biographical narrative—traces her educational background and the earlier part of her career. She was born into a family with significant scientific interests and accomplishments. Influenced by the educator Elizabeth Agassiz, Maury attended Cornell University, where despite different academic programs designed to prepare women for occupations considered suitable for them, and the prejudice of male faculty, she obtained a PhD. Her mentor was the paleontologist Gilbert Harris. Women's difficulties in gaining acceptance in fieldwork with men and academic advancement are explored. Maury's failure to be promoted at Barnard College led her to accept a position at a college in South Africa. By 1918, expeditions there, in New York, Louisiana, Trinidad, and one that she led to Santo Domingo had resulted in several publications.
