In a survey, 44 randomly selected APA accredited doctoral programs in professional psychology from 150, all university-based, reported that a median of two of every three students never took a cognate course outside their department (8 of every 9 never took more than one cognate). Only a fifth of the programs offered any courses within their program by nonpsychology faculty. Only 22% of the programs required a nonpsychology cognate (usually Statistics in the Mathematics or Statistics Department) although 37% favored such a requirement Freestanding professional schools, challenged to demonstrate diverse educational opportunity for accreditation procedures, have routinely developed avenues for multidisciplinary stimulation that many more advantaged university-based programs ignore. Diversity of educational model as well as of curriculum is advocated.

An electronic audit tool to track the donning and doffing practices of personal protective equipment in the emergency department Maya Jusza, Ramya Sridhar, Jennifer Woods, Sharon Drury Background: Maintaining the safety of patients and healthcare professionals is a priority in all healthcare settings. Infection prevention measures such as donning and doffing practices of personal protective equipment (PPE) have become even more imperative in light of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Potential PPE breaches and the degree of frontline compliance are currently being analyzed through the use of paper PPE audit tools which can be laborious and time-consuming. The development of an electronic alternative would improve frontline safety and enhance the efficiency of data collection, while optimizing the ability to share these observations with the frontline team in real time. Two nursing leadership students from the University of Alberta were tasked with developing an electronic PPE audit tool prototype for the University of Alberta Hospital’s emergency department. Implementation: An electronic PPE audit tool prototype was developed using Google Forms which provided a user-friendly interface. Google applications were used as no confidential or patient data was collected during PPE audits. The prototype auto-populated the data entries into linked spreadsheets and interactive data dashboards that visualized the data using graphs in real time. This enabled users to easily identify trends and direct educational interventions as required. Instructional one pagers and screencast videos were also created to accompany the prototype. The prototype was reviewed by and received extensive support from: Unit Managers, Patient Care Managers, Process Improvement Nurses, Infection Prevention Control (IPC), the Executive Director of the University of Alberta Hospital and Stollery emergency department and Edmonton Zone medicine programs, and the University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Executive Leadership Team. Several changes and improvements were made using the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. This prototype has currently been replicated onto an Alberta Health Services (AHS) server and has completed the formal testing phase with a planned application launch date. Evaluation Methods: Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles were used to guide the implementation of this audit tool prototype. After development, the prototype was tested and revised which included six rounds of audit trials at the University of Alberta Hospital’s emergency department and on some inpatient medicine units. This prototype was consistently evaluated at various stages of development and changes were made to include feedback. After approval was received to recreate this prototype onto an AHS compatible server, additional changes were made to ensure functionality. These changes included adding designations and simplifying certain questions. IPC was consulted to ensure the steps outlined for donning and doffing in the prototype were accurate and reflected requirements in the clinical environment. Results: This audit tool prototype has gathered tremendous support through various demonstrations of its ability to streamline data collection in the healthcare setting. This data is relevant to the safety of both frontline workers and patients as it identifies inconsistencies in donning and doffing practices. In addition, the prototype also complements the Edmonton zone-wide PPE coaching initiative by allowing for a quantitative measurement of its efficacy. This has prompted the fast-tracked replication of an AHS compatible version with the assistance of a dedicated team that includes the creators of the prototype tool, IPC, Quality Assurance, Information Technology, and Clinical Services Development. This version has a scheduled launch date on March 22, 2021 and is to be initially rolled out to University of Alberta’s emergency department and medicine units. The objective is to eventually make this the standardized PPE audit tool throughout Alberta. Advice and Lessons Learned: 1) In order to be sustainable and implemented site-wide, an AHS compatible tool isrequired. The use of Google applications is not preferred as data will be stored outside ofthe AHS server. Even though there is no confidential information, wide-spread use mayoverwhelm the Google platform and a Gmail account is required to view data. An in-house AHS alternative has been developed. 2) Several discussions took place regarding discretions on what steps can be auditedaccording to IPC protocols. For example, some clinical nurse educators prefer handhygiene to be completed between donning steps, while this is not mandatory or auditableaccording to IPC. In addition, several discussions took place to identify the operationaland business owners of this tool which are required to support the AHS compatibleversion of the application. 3) PPE audits are vital across all hospital departments to improve the quality of healthcare. The use of PPE during patient care has grown exponentially due to the SARS-CoV2pandemic and has amplified the need for an electronic alternative to the existing paperPPE audit tool. The electronic audit tool offers an innovative way to accurately andefficiently collect and display data which will promote an improved quality of care.

Attracting applicants in modern conditions is quite an important and difficult task for higher education institutions. Non-core graduate departments of the University face the greatest difficulties in this process. The article discusses the main directions of career guidance work of the Department of “Sociology, psychology and social management” of the Moscow Aviation Institute (NationalResearchUniversity) in the course of implementing cooperation agreements with educational institutions inMoscowand theMoscowregion. The authors present an experience of organizing and conducting research circles in sociology and social psychology for students of grades 8-11.The activity of the sociological research circle “First steps in science” was aimed at forming students’ ideas about research, its methods and stages; developing skills of independent work with the received social information; obtaining skills for developing, conducting and presenting research results. The program of the circle “Social psychology” adapted for classes of humanitarian and socioeconomic orientation, included personal growth trainings and career guidance games aimed at developing professional self-determination in career planning.Research circles allowed school students to develop their special skills, arouse interest in sociology and psychology, improve their understanding of the criteria for their own professional choice, as well as form students’ understanding of the Department’s profile.During the implementation of career guidance measures in modern conditions, along with positive results, the authors have identified the factors that hinder the successful interaction of schools and universities such as the lack of involvement in this process of all subjects of the educational space, insufficient attention of the school administration to the social needs of graduating departments. To solve these problems, the authors have developed and proposed a model for organizing research circles based on schools, which can qualitatively improve the social partnership of all interested participants. The basic ideas and theses of the article may be of interest both for teachers of higher educational institutions and for pedagogical staff of secondary schools.

In an effort to test the prevalence of sexual abuse myths among potential educators, a true/false sexual abuse questionnaire consisting of 60 myths was completed by 191 students in their first or second year of the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Only five out of the 60 myths (8%) were consistently recognized as false statements by all the students. Furthermore, only 12 students (6%) recognized all the statements were gross overgeneralizations. Those items to which 10 or more per cent of the students responded as true are discussed and some possible reasons for the tenacity of these particular myths are explored. Moskal advocates that student and practicing teachers, administrators, and their school boards are in need of inservice training both on how to recognize the subtle signs of sexual abuse in children and adolescents and to receive the encouragement they need to report it to the proper authorities. Perhaps most importantly, educators cannot even begin to either recognize or report sexual abuse if their own stereotypical myths and biases shroud their perceptions of reality.

This study aims at investigating the association between metacognitive awareness and student’s academic achievements. The study undertakes the objectives and hypotheses on Low, Average and High achievers in addition to assess the effects of metacognition awareness level on student’s academic achievement. Through multistage stratified random sampling, data was collected from 160 undergraduate students, studying in Department of Mathematics & Department of English in Abdul Wali Khan University, Khyber Pukhtunkwa. Data was collected through Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) by Schraw and Dennison (1994), CGPA of the students, and self-developed objective type subject test. Descriptive Statistics & statistical tests (Chi-square & Linear Regression) were applied for data analyses. The results showed that metacognitive awareness had significant effect on student’s academic achievement (CGPA) in Department of English whereas it was found to be insignificant in Department of Mathematics. The study recommends an introductory course on Educational Psychology, which cater the metacognitive needs of the students. Moreover, research studies are recommended in the subjects except English and Mathematics. The cultural difference of the students, teachers, and locality of the universities might be taken care of future perspective of researchers.

In this commentary, I try to reveal how I got to this stage, partially explaining my biases, and possibly helping others learn from my experiences including mistakes. Changing from seeking an M.D. to cellular biology and then to pharmacology early in my career were the best moves I made. The next best move was migration to Canada, away from the McCarthy-McCarran hysteria. Arriving at a time after the end of World War II when science in Canada was expanding was very good luck. I had an excellent opportunity to enjoy both the administration (as Chair of the first independent Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta) and the practice of pharmacology (as a practitioner of research on smooth muscle in health and disease). For me, the practice of research has always won over administration when a choice had to be made. Early on, I began to ask questions about educational practices and tried to evaluate them. This led me to initiate changes in laboratories and to seek nondidactic educational approaches such as problem-based learning. I also developed questions about the practice of anonymous peer review. After moving to McMaster in 1975, I was compelled to find a solution for a failed "Pharmacology Program" and eventually developed the first "Smooth Muscle Research Program". Although that was a good solution for the research component, it did not solve the educational needs. This led to the development of "therapeutic problems", which were used to help McMaster medical students educate themselves about applied pharmacology. Now these problems are being used to educate pharmacology honours and graduate students at the University of Alberta. The best part of all these activities is the colleagues and friends that I have interacted with and learned from over the years, and the realization that many of them have collaborated with me again in this volume.Key words: bias and anonymity, problem-based learning, research versus administration, smooth muscle.

Abstract Studies in different countries comparing the quality of education in private and public schools have used a variety of measurement methods to determine educational quality and findings have been mixed. For the unique situation of Greece, the variable of student admission to the Greek university system, depending on whether the student’s secondary education was in the public or the private system, provides an apt outcome variable to measure relative educational quality. We provide estimates of the effect of private secondary schooling in Greece on students’ admission to their preferred university academic department, using data from nationwide surveys conducted identically in 2000 and 2015. This repeated-measures research design allowed us to compare the same set of factors between the two administrations, thus examining for the stability or change of their contribution over time. Our final sample consisted of 4740 secondary school students. We used a weighted questionnaire to investigate the effect of private schooling on the trajectory to university. In our empirical model, a multinomial logistic regression was performed to classify subjects based on values of a set of predictor variables. Results indicate that attending a private high school offers secondary education students a significantly higher probability of stepping successfully into an academic department of higher relevance to their academic preferences and future career expectations. We also find that private high school education significantly minimizes the efforts required for a student to enter a desirable university department. Positive correlations between the attendance of private high school education and demographic attributes of both students and their families were also found. Research and policy recommendations are included.

Research studies concerning pragmatic acquisition by students have established that pragmatic nonconformity or deviation in the execution of speech acts, among which is "condolence", is primarily due to the students' incompetence to identify the proper meaning and to handle the proper form. In Iraqi context, most Iraqi EFL university students are found to inapproriately use illocutionary acts, as they digress from the sociocultural standards and pragmalinguistic rules used for making condolence. When producing circumstances comprising the use of the expressive condolence, students' speeches and responses do not conform to those of native speakers. Their replies seem awkward or refer to certain spoken situations other than those required in the communicative process or interaction. Thus, the study intends to identify Iraqi EFL students' deviation in the performance of the expressive condolence in order to get at the reasons behind this unconventionality. To achieve this aim, fifty Iraqi EFL college students of the University of Baghdad , College of Languages, Department of English, have been chosen to give ( data) replies to a test containing five situtations involving the production of condolence. Responses to the test have shown that negative transfer of L1 socio-pragmatic knowledge and lack of pragma-linguistic rules are the main characteristics that EFL Iraqi students resort to when handling condolence. Socio-pragmatic deviation occurs because they are linguistically unconscious of the conventions and means used in the target language; therefore, their performance is a non-native one. Further, lack of syntactic and semantic knowledge is an influential factor in producing certain spoken situations of condoling.

The aim of this paper is to outline the issues surrounding online support for open and distance learners in a dual-mode department. In recent years with the acceptance of learning as a lifelong process, many UK universities have broadened their remit to embrace a larger and more diverse learner population. This cultural change in education policy has corresponded with rapid developments in educational technology. The Open Learning Unit (OLU), University of Wales, Aberystwyth, was established in 1993 specifically to develop open and distance learning degree schemes. It is directed by an educational philosophy of learner-centred, open and flexible learning. Central to this work is the implementation and maintenance of a learner support system, which includes the use of computer conferencing. Using over 600 distance learners from a Department of Information Studies as a case study, this paper aims to outline the issue of support for open and distance learners, describe the benefits and barriers of computer conferencing as a support medium, and consider the potential of social cognition research to investigate lurking behaviour in online teaching and learning environments.

The historical milestones of the development of the psychology department, its achievements and prospects have been described. In the context of humanistic and cognitive psychology theoretical and methodological aspects of the vocational training of future educators to create the egalitarian educational environment for children and youth which is relevant to the principles of gender equality and parity have been analyzed. A conceptual model, psychological and pedagogical conditions of the egalitarian personality development of a future educator have been presented. The implementation of the personal-egalitarian approach as a basic one for the formation of gender competence as a key in personal development and professional awareness of future educators has been methodologically substantiated. It has been founded that the Self-concept is a standard of personal and professional development of future educators in various aspects of life. The meaning of the concept of «egalitarian personality of the future educator» as a subject of self-creation, open, self-sufficient, gender-competent personality, which follows the principles of equality and parity of both sexes in personal and professional life has been defined. Gender and educational technics of psychological and pedagogical support of the professional formation of the future educator on the principles of gender equality (interactive methods of social and psychological education, educational and training programs with a gender component) have been developed. It has empirically proved that implementation of a model provides for the creation of the egalitarian and educational environment in a higher educational establishment, the activation of the self-determination of youth in gender issues, and development of gender sensitivity and tolerance of future educators.

Counseling psychology and school counseling have become quite removed from each other despite sharing a common history, having similar values, and the fact that many training programs for the two disciplines coexist in the same university department or college. This article argues for a stronger integration of the two specialties to advance their contributions to pre–K-12 education and the nation’s youth. Counseling psychology, with its strong commitment to career psychology, counselor training and supervision, multiculturalism, prevention, and scientific inquiry, is well positioned among psychological specialties to exert major influence in the educational enterprise. Models of school counselor training and service delivery have been recently developed and offer numerous opportunities for collaboration between counseling psychologists and school counselors. A collaborative model that encompasses training curricula, research, service, and professional organization dimensions of the specialties is presented. Challenges that may impede a stronger partnership between counseling psychology and school counseling, as well as suggestions for addressing them, are also discussed.

Background: Children with ADHD have 2 to 3 times increased health care utilization and annual costs once diagnosed, but little is known about utilization patterns early in life, prior to diagnosis. Quantifying early health services use among children later diagnosed with ADHD could help us understand the early life impact of the disorder and uncover health care utilization patterns associated with higher ADHD risk. Methods: Electronic health record (EHR) data from the Duke University Health System (DUHS) was analyzed for patients born October 1, 2006–October 1, 2016. Those with at least two well-child visits before age 1 were grouped as ADHD or not ADHD based on retrospective billing codes. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) for hospital admissions, procedures, emergency department (ED) visits, and outpatient clinic encounters before age 1 were compared between groups via logistic regression controlling for sex, race, and ethnicity. Results: ADHD diagnoses were identified in 1,315 (4.4%) of 29,929 patients meeting criteria. Before age 1, individuals with ADHD had 60% increased odds of hospital admission, 58% increased odds of visiting the emergency department, and 41% increased odds of procedures ( p < .0001), including 4.7-fold increased odds of blood transfusion ( p < .0001). They also had more outpatient clinic visits (μ = 14.7 vs. μ = 12.5, p < .0001), including 52% increased odds of visiting a medical specialist, 38% increased odds of visiting a surgical specialist, 70% increased odds of visiting a neonatologist, and 71% increased odds of visiting an ophthalmologist ( p < .0001 for all AORs). In addition, individuals with ADHD had 6-fold increased odds of visits related to child abuse and neglect ( p = .0010). Conclusions: Children later diagnosed with ADHD were more likely to be admitted to the hospital, visit the ED, and visit specific medical and surgical services before age 1. Future work will identify patterns of health interactions unique to ADHD to stratify ADHD risk.

So, the main purpose of the study is to identify various L2 de-motivational factors of the BS Undergraduate L2 learners of the Department of English of a remote and under-researched Kohat University of Science and Technology, Khyber Pakhtunhwa, Pakistan. Drawing upon the questionnaires of the well referenced L2 de-motivation experts and also adding some items related to gender and anxiety oriented L2 de-motivation, a modified closed ended questionnaire of 40 items was developed. The data was obtained from 400 (250 Male and 150 Females) L2 learners was analysed by applying the rarely used but much recommended exploratory factor analysis. Total 08 L2 de-motivational factors emerged: Teacher, syllabus, non communicative methods, L2 anxiety, lack of classroom resources, unfavourable classroom environment and rarely noted gender related L2 de-motivational factors. Moreover, in this study in contrast to earlier studies in Pakistan, we are able to not only identify the various L2 de-motivational factors in well defined forms but also construct and validate the modified questionnaire with the help of applying factor analysis. Thus the questionnaire can be exploited for future research in field of L2 de-motivation in general and particularly in Pakistan. Similarly, unlike the earlier studies, learners' negative attitudes towards English and learning its culture did not emerge as a L2 de-motivational factor. Moreover, new but equally contesting gender related L2 de-motivational factor also emerged. This study highlights that L2 teachers should adopt motivating teaching methods, interesting teaching materials and develop interesting syllabus. Moreover, L2 learners' needs analysis be given more importance for addressing their L2 de-motivation and thus enhancing their language proficiency in the Higher Education in Pakistan.

Introduction: Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a common presentation to emergency departments (ED). Of these patients, 35-45% receive a blood transfusion. Guidelines for blood transfusion in UGIB have been well established, and recommend a hemoglobin (Hb) level below 70 g/L as the transfusion target in a stable patient. There is no consensus on a transfusion threshold for unstable UGIB. There is limited data regarding physician practices in the ED. The aim of our study is to determine the appropriateness, by expert consensus, of blood transfusions in UGIB in a tertiary care hospital ED. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients presenting with UGIB to the University of Alberta Hospital ED in 2016. These patients were then screened for blood transfusions. Data were obtained from the patient records. Chart derived data were verified with records obtained from the blood bank. For each patient, the history, vitals, Glasgow Blatchford Score (GBS), relevant labs, and record of blood transfusions were collected and organized into a case summary. Each patient summary was presented individually to a panel of three expert clinicians (2 Gastroenterology, 1 Emergency Medicine), who then decided on the appropriateness of each blood transfusion by consensus. Results: Blood transfusions (data available 395/400) were given to 51% (202/395) of patients presenting with UGIB. Of these, 86% (174/202) were judged to be appropriate. Of the 395 patients, 34% (135/395) had a Hb of <70 g/L. Of these, 93% (126/135) were transfused, and all of these were considered appropriate. 18% (70/395) had a Hb between 71-80. 74% (52/70) of these patients were given blood, and 79% (41/52) were considered appropriate. 13% (50/395) of the patients had a Hb between 81-90, with 28% (14/50) receiving a transfusion. Of these, 36% (5/14) were deemed to be appropriate. 35% (140/395) of patients had a Hb of >90. 7% (10/140) of these received blood. 20% (2/10) were considered appropriate. Conclusion: The panel of expert clinicians judged 86% of the blood transfusions to be appropriate. All transfusions under the recommended guideline of 70 g/L were considered appropriate. In addition, the majority of transfusions above a Hb of 70 g/L were considered appropriate, but 37% were not. Further studies evaluating the feasibility of current guideline recommendations in an ED setting are required. Educational interventions should be created to reduce inappropriate blood transfusions above a Hb 70 g/L.

There is a need for more bilingual and/or minority speech-language pathologists to serve an increasingly diverse population. To recruit and retain minority students, faculty in university training programs should increase their awareness of minority students’ needs and expectations. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to the factors relating to minority students’ success in higher education and reports the results of a survey designed to assess students’ perceptions of factors related to academic success. It also delineates how faculty of the Department of Communicative Disorders at California State University, Fullerton, used these results to improve the recruitment and retention of minority students. Because there is a dynamic relationship between faculty, students, and institutional requirements, other communicative disorders departments are encouraged to use this survey to better understand and respond to their students’ needs.

The work is aimed at studying the use of metaphor as a psychological tool for rep- resenting the understanding of subjective personal meanings of value orientation. The materials of two empirical studies are obtained through a sample of part-time students of the Department of Labor Psychology and Psychological Counseling of the Moscow Pedagogical State University (N=50), 40% males and 60% fe- males, aged 19 to 32 years, the average age is 25 years, the average deviation in the sample is 3.2. Study 1 included measurements of indicators of personal value orientations. We used the techniques by O. I. Motkov and T.A. Ogneva “Value orientations of the individual (Version 2)”. Study 2 included individual conversations with participants during which they were asked to write metaphors for each of the previously ranked internal and external personal values. The results of the study suggest that there is a strong positive relationship between the individual’s emotional attitude to the metaphor of personal values and his/her assessment of the significance of value orientations. The data summarized in the study and the recommendations provided on their basis can be successfully applied in the educational process, as well as when dealing with value orientations of the individual in psychological counseling and psychotherapy. The materials of the study can also be used in the training/advanced training of psychologists and educators.
