Annotation:

In 1993, a 100-y return-time flood brought about major hydrological changes in the Vaccarès Lagoon (Rhône Delta, France). Four years after the floods, Gobius niger had disappeared from the lagoon. Only the fall in salinity can explain this change. Reproductive traits in 1993 and 1994 were compared to determine the choices this species takes to improve its fitness in such unfavourable conditions. Evidence suggesting that G. niger is not a sedentary lagoon species is also discussed.

Monthly data collected during 1993 in the Vaccarès lagoon (Rhône Delta, France) were used to investigate the influence of the trematode Aphalloïdes cœlomicola on the survival of the common goby Pomatoschistus microps, which acts both as second intermediate and definitive host. Prevalence of the parasite did not increase with fish size in either sex. Mean abundance and variance to mean abundance ratio gave evidence that the trematode could have an impact on host mortality. Gonad weight of parasitized females was reduced and the parasite seemed to provoke a gonadal regression above a certain parasitic biomass. Fecundity and egg diameters did not differ between parasitized and unparasitized females, we thus hypothesize that the energy content of eggs (composition in lipids and proteins) was probably modified as an adaptation to energy losses. Prevalence of infection in males compared to females and influence of the parasite on host survival and reproductive effort are discussed.

The Vaccarès Lagoon System, located in the central part of the Rhône Delta (France), is a complex shallow coastal lagoon, exposed to a typical Mediterranean climate and a specific hydrological regime affected by man-controlled exchanges with the sea and agricultural drainage channels. In this article, we report the results obtained by a series of monitoring programs, with different spatial and temporal resolutions. Long-term datasets from 1999 to 2019 with data collected on a monthly basis and a high spatial resolution highlighted the significant spatial heterogeneity in salinity regimes, and helped to determine the long-term evolution of the total mass of dissolved salt. High-frequency surveys allowed to characterize the water levels and salinity dynamics seasonal response to (i) the exchanges with the Mediterranean Sea, (ii) the exchanges with agricultural drainage channels, and (iii) the rain and evaporation. In addition, wind effects on salinity variations are also explored. This work shows how different spatial and temporal monitoring strategies provide complementary information on the dynamic of such a complex system. Results will be useful and provide insight for the management of similar lagoon systems, accommodating for both human activities and ecological stakes in the context of global change.

A profiling analysis for the methanol extract of the seeds of Vaccaria hispanica (Mill.) Rauschert was performed using a HPLC-ESIMS technique. Five compounds were identified according to their retention times, UV spectroscopic and MS features, and by comparison with literature data. Among them, a new flavonoid glycoside, named vaccarin H, was isolated and the structure determined by spectral and chemical analysis as isovitexin 2″- O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-4′- O-(6″″- O-dihydroferuloyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside.

The relevant benefits of hyperspectral sensors for water column determination and seabed features mapping compared to multispectral data, especially in coastal areas, have been demonstrated in recent studies. In this study, we used hyperspectral satellite data in the accurate mapping of the bathymetry and the composition of water habitats for inland water. Particularly, the identification of the bottom diversity for a shallow lagoon (less than 2 m in depth) was examined. Hyperspectral satellite data were simulated based on aerial hyperspectral imagery acquired above a lagoon, namely the Vaccarès lagoon (France), considering the spatial and spectral resolutions, and the signal-to-noise ratio of a satellite sensor, BIODIVERSITY, that is under study by the French space agency (CNES). Various sources of uncertainties such as inter-band calibration errors and atmospheric correction were considered to make the dataset realistic. The results were compared with a recently launched hyperspectral sensor, namely the DESIS sensor (DLR, Germany). The analysis of BIODIVERSITY-like sensor simulated data demonstrated the feasibility to satisfactorily estimate the bathymetry with a root-mean-square error of 0.28 m and a relative error of 14% between 0 and 2 m. In comparison to open coastal waters, the retrieval of bathymetry is a more challenging task for inland waters because the latter usually shows a high abundance of hydrosols (phytoplankton, SPM, and CDOM). The retrieval performance of seabed abundance was estimated through a comparison of the bottom composition with in situ data that were acquired by a recently developed imaging camera (SILIOS Technologies SA., France). Regression coefficients for the retrieval of the fractional species abundances from the theoretical inversion and measurements were obtained to be 0.77 (underwater imaging camera) and 0.80 (in situ macrophytes data), revealing the potential of the sensor characteristics. By contrast, the comparison of the in situ bathymetry and macrophyte data with the DESIS inverted data showed that depth was estimated with an RSME of 0.38 m and a relative error of 17%, and the fractional species abundance was estimated to have a regression coefficient of 0.68.

This study aims to identify the figurative and symbolic meanings of Giuseppe Vaccaro’s plans for the churches of San Gregorio Barbarigo in the EUR neighbourhood (1970-1972) and of Santi Martiri dell’Uganda in the Poggio Ameno district (1975-1982), in Rome. These particular values may be recognized in the configuration of the layout, in the structural types and construction techniques used, and in how the two buildings’ materials were worked and put in place. These qualities must be preserved, because they define the current image of the works, and because they bear witness to the creativity of their architect. The reconstruction of the two churches’ creative and building process, and an understanding the compositional language used by Vaccaro (and the other professionals taking part in the work site) are an indispensable prerequisite for gaining knowledge of twentieth-century architecture and for defining effective operative strategies for protecting its spatiality, understood as the “place of image”.

In Naples (Italy), the passage from Renaissance to Baroque architectonic language could be identified between 1580 and 1612. During this era, one of the most significant topics of the architectonic research on the sacred space was the right compromise among the Counter-Reformation patterns, the central space and the oval plan. Giovanni Antonio Dosio and Dionisio di Bartolomeo were the most representative architects of this passage. They provide the access to new experimental varieties. So, when the architect Cosimo Fanzago arrived in Naples in 1612, the city was almost ready to use the emblematic ellipse plan of the Baroque, such as the churches Santa Maria della Sanita` and San Giovanni dei Fiorentini by Fra’ Nuvolo prove. Fanzago’s architectonic research was followed by the studies by Bartolomeo and Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, father and son, up to Domenico Antonio Vaccaro that was the most representative director of the Baroque sacred space scene. Moving from the analysis and comparison of the most representative churches of Neapolitans Baroque era, the paper proposes an unedited studio about the evolution of sacred space’s idea related to decoration, symbology and allegory, with a focus on Domenico Antonio Vaccaro’s works, such as the churches of Santa Maria della Concezione in Montecalvario neighbourhood, San Michele Arcangelo in Naples’ Piazza Dante, San Michele in Anacapri (on Capri Island), the Palazzo Abbaziale di Loreto and Saviour Church in San Guglielmo al Goleto Monastery, both near Avellino.

The present ornithological report for the Camargue covers five years (1990-1994). This time-period was characterised by mild winters, high yearly rainfall in 1990, 1993 and 1994 and a sharp drop of salinity in the Vaccarès. The Little Egret and the Cattle Egret have increased their breeding figures that might be related to some mild winters and good breeeding success. The Black-crowned Night Heron was still at a low level. With about 1500 breeding pairs, the Grey Heron has nearly tripled its numbers since 1981, whereas the Purple Heron has continued to decline. The following species have become new breeders : White Stork, Great Egret, Glossy Ibis, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose and Common Buzzard. Some others have become rare breeders : Collared Pratincole, Stone-curlew, Eurasian Scops Owl, Little Owl and Com Bunting. These species have been threatened by habitat alterations to their breeding grounds or along their migration routes and wintering quarters. There is a concern about the breeding of gulls, terns and waders in the two salines of Camargue. While the number of breeding islets has remained un¬ changed, most of them are now colonised by the Yellow-legged Gull. This has led to dramatic population shifts of the smaller species from one saline (Salin de Giraud) to the other (Aigues-Mortes). At the latter site, the smaller species have, moreover, adopted nest sites with low breeding success. Thus, the survival of several species is guaranteed by immigration movements from abroad. The Black-headed Gull has continued to decline, but the Slender-billed Gull, the Mediterranean Gull and the Sandwich Tern has increased and other species have remained more or less stable. The trend of all these species should be followed with great care and the carrying capacity of the two salines must be urgently enhanced. A few individuals of some trans-Saharan migrants have overwintered (Black-crowned Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, Black-winged Stilt, Common Tern, Whiskered Tern, Wryneck and Yellow Wagtail) or have increasingly overwintered (Ringed Plover and Kentish Plover). The recent mild winters may have favoured this trend. Two other species (Cetti’s Warbler and Fantailed Warbler) have increased their breeding numbers probably for the same reason. The Purple Swamphen and the Spotless Starling are expected to become new breeders in a near future. The Common Crane and the Greylag Goose have increased their wintering numbers. The Camargue still remains a good breeding area for the Mallard but the Gadwall did not progress. The Common Pochard is still absent as a breeder. Among the Anatidae, only the Greylag Goose and the Mute Swan have increased as breeders. The high hunting pressure is suspected to be the major factor that limits the overall carrying capacity of the Camargue for wintering ducks and coots. A concern for wildlife conservationists and for hunters.

In this article, Liliana Vaccaro discusses the educational experience of a particular popular education project in Chile, called the Learning Workshops. This program, which has been in existence for twelve years, has evolved in many areas. Vaccaro documents its evolution by explaining how the Workshops' teaching practice has become more effective, how popular educators have taken total control of some projects, and more recently, how coordinating groups of popular educators are being formed to provide a more permanent educational resource in their communities. Vaccaro identifies some of the strategies and processes that are crucial for achieving appropriation — that is, when popular educators are motivated and prepared to take control of, or appropriate, the educational project in their own communities. This article presents the educational efforts of people who, despite their poverty and the Chilean government's historical indifference to their problems and needs, have committed themselves to improving their lives and have taken control of their destinies. Vaccaro speaks about the commitment of people who are working to construct a democratic society which guarantees quality education, personal safety and health, and opportunities for improvement for all.

The current study was designed to test the efficacy of auricular acupressure on weight reduction and serum total cholesterol (TC), total triglycerides (TG), high density lipids (HDL) and low density lipids (LDL) in an eight-week, randomized controlled trial of three groups of 84 adolescents aged 18–20 with a body mass index (BMI) of 23 or higher. The control group received tape treatment only and the other two experimental groups were administered acupressure using either Japanese Magnetic Pearls or vaccaria seeds. All three groups were educated on reduced calorie diets, physical activity, weight loss, and lifestyle modification. During the eight-week trial, all participants were seen weekly for 10 min per session. Anthropometric measurements of BMI and TC, TG, HDL, and LDL were performed at weeks 0 and 8 for all participants. Changes in BMI, TC, TG, HDL, and LDL were calculated from baseline to trial completion. BMI was significantly increased in the control group by +0.0457 ( p < 0.0001), it was decreased in the Japanese Magnetic Pearl group by -0.6982 ( p < 0.0001) and the vaccaria seed group by -1.2341 ( p < 0.0001). All three groups showed significant increases in TC, TG, HDL, and LDL. In conclusion, the current study shows that auricular acupressure employing Japanese Magnetic Pearls or vaccaria seeds can decrease BMI, with the vaccaria seed method showing the greatest reduction. Auricular acupressure did not result in decreased TC, TG, HDL, or LDL in the current eight-week protocol.

This article presents the NEFFIE (which stands for ‘Neuroaesthetic Photography’) project, a contemporary reinterpretation of Franco Vaccari’s iconic artwork, presented 50 years ago at the 1972 International Venice Art Biennale and entitled Exhibition in Real Time No. 4: Leave on the Walls a Photographic Trace of Your Fleeting Visit. Thanks to today’s technological innovation, NEFFIE develops Vaccari’s idea from a more contemporary perspective. Vaccari’s original photo booth becomes a technologically revisited booth that uses an algorithm and wearable sensors to reshape the subjective emotional-cognitive responses derived from viewing particular images, thus generating the ‘cognitive photograph’ or ‘COFFIE metapicture’. These metapictures are subsequently minted as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) objects and then displayed on a virtual wall, the ‘COFFIE wall’, generating what can be defined as a Virtual Exhibition in Real Time, a hypothetical contemporary re-actualization of Vaccari’s artistic proposition. The NEFFIE project could be considered a pervasive media art proposal capable of promoting social cohesion, by encouraging creative participation and co-creation. The project is being developed in Milan, thanks to a fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration between the Research Center in Advanced Technology in Health and Well-Being of San Raffaele Hospital, and ICONE, the European Research Center in History and Theory of the Image of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. This multidisciplinary approach combines art-historical theoretical thinking with the world of technological innovation. In particular, the NEFFIE project integrates the visual and conceptual tools of photography with the methodologies and knowledge of biomedical engineering and computer science.

OBJETIVO: as classificações têm mudado na último metade do século, sendo a mais usada desde a última década, a classificação AO. Em 2004, Vaccaro et al. propuseram a Thoraco-Lumbar Injury Classification (TLICS). MÉTODOS: análise da reprodução inter e intraobservador, utilizando o teste Kappa das classificações entre três níveis distintos de traumatólogos em formação, em 30 casos. RESULTADOS: a reprodução intraobservador na classificação de Vaccaro foi: OI: 0,73; OII: 0,6 e OIII: 0,63. Para a classificação AO, 0,77; 0,7 e 0,6, respectivamente. Entre as duas classificações: OI: 0,59; OII: 0,7 e OIII: 0,62. A avaliação interobservador para a classificação de Vaccaro foi de 0,66 e para a classificação AO de 0,67. Os pontos críticos foram rotação e lesões do complexo ligamentar posterior. CONCLUSÕES: as duas classificações mostram um bom grau de concordância (índice Kappa). Com a de Vaccaro, observou-se concordância global de 69%. Com respeito à indicação do tratamento ortopédico, a concordância foi de 37%. A indicação de tratamento cirúrgico foi de 29%. Cabe salientar que essa classificação dispõe de um nível impreciso em que pode-se optar por qualquer dos dois tratamentos (TLICS 4), o qual foi observado em 3%. Não houve concordância em 31%. As mesmas indicações para a classificação AO apresentaram concordância global de 67%. Indicação ortopédica foi de 32%. Foi realizada uma cirurgia em 21%. Nas lesões classificadas como A3 (14%), a sua indicação de tratamento não foi definida com unanimidade entre os observadores.

Introduction: The relevant features in the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures vary in the literature. The classical surgical indications of burst fractures are loss of vertebral body height, kyphosis, neurological deficit and canal encroachment. Recent papers have attributed less importance to canal impingement as a surgical indicator in intact patients, irrespectively of the degree of encroachment. The several thoracolumbar fracture classifications have prompted efforts to guide the surgical indications. We analyzed the relevance attributed to the canal encroachment by thoracolumbar fracture classifications in the management of burst fractures without neurological deficit. Objective: To evaluate the relevance attributed by the thoracolumbar fractures classifications to the canal encroachment in the management of burst fractures without posterior ligamentous complex disruptions or neurological deficits. Methods: A literature search was performed by tracking the related articles of thoracolumbar fractures classifications from Vaccaro’s to Holdsworth’s study. We analyzed the role of canal impingement in the management of burst fractures without posterior ligament complex injury or neurological deficits in each classification. Results: Seven classifications were included. Holdsworth considered the burst fractures as stable, irrespectively of the amount of canal impingement or neurological deficit. Denis considered that the burst fracture carried a neurological instability criterion, therefore, in these cases he suggested surgical treatment because of the riskof new neurological damage. McAffee postulated that there is no reliable predictor to correlate the severity of canal encroachment with the risk of neurological damage. Ferguson and Allen discussed the possibility of anterior decompression, stabilization and anterior fusion of the spine in certain cases of burst fractures. The classifications of McCormack, Karaikovic and Gaines, Magerl and Vaccaro did not include canal encroachment in their considerations. Conclusion: The thoracolumbar fractures classifications did not directly consider the severity of canal encroachment in the treatment decision making of burst fractures without neurological damage. It is not possible to predict which patients will deteriorate if not operated. It remains unclear what is the risk of neurological deterioration in a SCE greater than 50%.

Plant Sci. 91: 425–428. We report the effects of redbacked cutworm Euxoa ochrogaster (Guenée) on cow cockle [Vaccaria hispanica (Mill.) Rauschert] plant height, seed yield, and 1000-seed weight (TSW). Euxoa ochrogaster damage to plots varied considerably among genotypes, with some genotypes exhibiting <10% damage and others >45%. Seed yield also varied significantly among genotypes and exhibited a strong linear relationship with the extent of E. ochrogaster damage. This is the first known report of any insect pest feeding on cow cockle. Results suggest that E. ochrogaster has the potential to cause significant losses in cow cockle crops.

En este artículo, Liliana Vaccaro discute la experiencia educativa de un programa de educación popular, especificamente, los Talleres de Aprendizaje. Este programa, que ha existido durante los pasados doce años, ha evolucionado en diversos aspectos. Vaccaro documenta dicha evolución explicando la forma en que las prácticas de enseñanza han mejorado, la forma en que los educadores populares han tomado control completo de algunos programas y más recientemente, la forma en que los educadores populares se han unido para coordinar sus esfuerzos y así proveer de una manera permanente recursos educativos en las comunidades. La autora identifica estrategias y procesos que son esenciales para alcanzar un nivel de apropiación, en otras palabras cuando educadores populares están motivados y preparados para tomar control del programa educativo en sus comunidades. Este artículo nos presenta los esfuerzos de la gente, que a pesar de las condiciones de pobreza en que viven y de la indiferencia que historicamente el gobierno chileno ha tenido hacia sus problemas y necesidades,se han dedicado a mejorar sus condiciones de vida y han tomado control de sus destinos. Vaccaro habla sobre el empeño de personas que trabajan para construir una sociedad destinos democrática en donde se garantice una educación de calidad, la salud y seguridad personal y las oportunidades para el mejoramiento propio de todos.

AbstractMotivated by the problem of variance allocation for the sum of dependent random variables, Colini-Baldeschi, Scarsini and Vaccari (2018) recently introduced Shapley values for variance and standard deviation games. These Shapley values constitute a criterion satisfying nice properties useful for allocating the variance and the standard deviation of the sum of dependent random variables. However, since Shapley values are in general computationally demanding, Colini-Baldeschi, Scarsini and Vaccari also formulated a conjecture about the relation of the Shapley values of two games, which they proved for the case of two dependent random variables. In this work we prove that their conjecture holds true in the case of an arbitrary number of independent random variables but, at the same time, we provide counterexamples to the conjecture for the case of three dependent random variables.
