Honey is an important functional food for human health and nutrition that is collected by honey bees and stored in the honeycombs. In this study, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and volatile compounds of 13 different honey samples collected from various districts of Malatya province were investigated. As a result of this study, it was determined that the total phenolic content varied between 8.50 mg GAE 100 g–1 and 73.90 mg GAE 100 g–1 and it was observed that the honey samples were rich in aldehydes, aliphatic acid and esters, alcohol

Plants release an array of volatile chemicals into the air to communicate with other organisms in the environment. Insect attack triggers emission of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). How insect herbivores use these odors to plan their detoxification systems is vital for insect adaptation to environmental xenobiotics. Here we show that the larvae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), a broadly polyphagous lepidopteran herbivore, have the capacity to use plant volatiles as cues to upregulate multiple detoxification systems, including cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s), for detoxificati

AbstractAgriculture is a significant source of GHGsglobally and ruminant livestock animals are one of the largest contributors to these emissions, responsible for an estimated 14% of GHGs (CH4and N2O combined) worldwide. A large portion of GHG fluxes from agricultural activities is related to CH4 emissions from ruminants. Both direct and indirect methods are available. Direct methods include enclosure techniques, artificial (e.g. SF6) or natural (e.g. CO2) tracer techniques, and micrometeorological methods using open-path lasers. Under the indirect methods, emission mechanisms are understood, where the CH4 emission potential is estimated based on the substrate characteristics and the digestibility (i.e. from volatile fatty acids). These approximate methods are useful if no direct measurement is possible. The different systems used to quantify these emission potentials are presented in this chapter. Also, CH4 from animal waste (slurry, urine, dung) is an important source: methods pertaining to measuring GHG potential from these sources are included.

AbstractThe daunting effects of climate change are more visible and acute among rural people in most developing countries. Smallholder farmers in rural communities are more encumbered by climate change impacts and they have been reeling with climate induced shocks for some time. Their vulnerability to climate change impacts is aggravated by high dependence on the climate volatile natural resource base, high poverty levels, lack of adaptive capacity, low educational levels, and lack of technoscience-based technologies among other key compounding factors. In the light of this, Zimbabwe is still crawling to implement and administer effective climate change management measures aimed at disaster risk reduction and management, vulnerability reduction, social resilience, and capacity building because of political and socioeconomic quagmires trapping the country. Consequently, rural people are the hardest hit by these developments. Climate change management connotes a human intervention to reduce the sources or enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases and adjustment to actual or expected climate and its effects, in order to moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities through mitigation and adaptation. Nevertheless, rural people are on record of engaging in a plethora of activities to manage climate change and its actual or potential risks. However, their efforts are marred by an avalanche of setbacks which serve as barriers to climate change management. Against this backdrop, this book chapter intends to delineate the factors serving as barriers to climate change management in Zimbabwe’s rural communities.

Concentrations of atmospheric pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) are increasing abruptly due to anthropogenic activities (fossil fuels combustion, industrial activities, and power generation etc.). These pollutants are causing soil (microbial diversity disturbance, soil structure), plants (germination, growth, and biochemistry), and human health (asthma, liver, and lungs disorders to cancers) interventions. All the effects of these pollutants on soil, plants, animals, and microbes needed to be discussed briefly. Different strategies and technologies (HOPES, IOT, TEMPO and TNGAPMS) are used in the world to reduce the pollutant emission at source or when in the atmosphere and also discussed here. All gaseous emissions control mechanisms for major exhaust gases from toxic to less toxic form or environmental friendly form are major concern. Heavy metals present in dust and volatile organic compounds are converted into less toxic forms and their techniques are discussed briefly.

In the present study, the mixed dairy cow feed products were collected from the supermarkets in Qatar and analyzed for the presence of AFB1 and OTA. Yeast strains were isolated and tested for their biological control activities against aflatoxigenic and ochratoxin fungi. We demonstrated that local 15 yeasts isolates have important antifungal potential activities through the synthesis of volatile o

Manufacturing enterprises are facing new challenges caused by unprecedented changes due to volatile market demands. Such changes have direct impact to the design, implementation and operation of automation systems in the domain of automotive production. An in-depth study in the activities of building and operating automation systems in the domain of automation manufacturing has revealed weaknesses in current practices and in particular an inability to cope effectively with production changes. It is envisaged that a component-based approach will enable an automation system to be designed, imple

A Parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) and a photocatalytic reactor with Pt-deposited TiO2 Photocatalyst were designed and constructed for the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The temperature of photocatalyst coated on the sunlight receiver was easily elevated to around 473 K by PTC, and 79% of toluene or 93% of acetaldehyde was removed continuously, when gaseous toluene (15ppm) or acetaldehyde (400ppm) was passed through the reactor. The combination of sunlight concentrator and Pt-TiO2 catalyst exhibited the enhancement of complete degradation of VOCs, the inhibition of deacti

The potential use of biomass co-combustion derived fly-ash products and zeolite 13X for the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using ozone was investigated for an integrated solar-assisted air purification and desiccant cooling system. Fly-ash products from rice husk-coal co-combustion at different biomass blending ratios were used as the adsorbent/catalyst materials. The material characteristics of the adsorbent/catalyst materials such as metal content and surface area were compared and correlated with the catalytic activities. It was found that the surface area and the metal co

Research in the areas of particulate matter (PM) emissions impacts on both climate and human health are currently very active, however there are a large number of variables and response times. As a better understanding of the contribution of aviation PM emissions is developed, new aircraft engines will need to be designed for reduced PM emissions. In order to do this, measurement methods for different PM metrics like mass, number, size distribution, volatile precursors and composition need to be developed followed by measurements for existing engines to assess their environmental impact.
