Questo lavoro mira ad evidenziare il passaggio che conduce Wilhelm von Humboldt a trovare nello studio del linguaggio l' espressione completa del suo costante intento antropologico di studio dell' uomo in tutte le sue forme. Lo sviluppo di teorie antropocentriche dello stato negli anni giovanili, i progetti di antropologia comparata e di caratterizzazione storica del diciottesimo secolo uniti all'elaborazione delle sue teorie estetiche segnano i passaggi fondamentali che portano Humboldt a individuare nel linguaggio la migliore e più alta espressione dell'animo umano in tutte le sue sfaccettature. Grande rilevanza viene conferita all'interno del lavoro al concetto di peculiarità individuale, il cui sviluppo è il vero e unico motore del miglioramento teleologico dell'umanità come unione di individui di presente, passato e futuro. La lingua è fondamentale dunque per gli scopi di ricerca che si pone Humboldt, in quanto racchiude i cardini del suo pensiero, che porta avanti sotto forme differenti sin dagli anni giovanili: permette lo sviluppo dell' individualità, poichè è mezzo di creazione dei pensieri e mezzo di espressione individuale; consente la comunicazione interindividuale, che è fondamentale per uscire dai limiti imposti dall'individualità, arricchendo cosi vicendevolmente gli individui; infine unisce la sfera sensibile alla sfera intellettuale e spirituale. Metodologicamente si è scelto di procedere all'analisi cronologica dei testi cardine che anticipano passaggio al linguaggio, soffermandosi cosi sulle motivazioni e sulle costanti che caratterizzano l' impianto antropologico della linguistica humboldtiana alla luce degli scritti precedenti. Infine è d'uopo sottolineare che si è voluta dedicare grande attenzione alla biografia di Humboldt e ai suoi contatti, personali e intellettuali: Schiller, Madame de Stael, Goethe e Kant sono solo alcune delle personalità con le quali Humboldt ha interagito.

Uma síntese da sua biografia, um pouco sobre sua vida como tradutor e sua presença no Brasil apresentam primeiramente a figura da qual se está tratando. Em seguida, uma fundamentação teórica acerca das características de um texto filosófico pela perspectiva da tradução já atestam que as condições histórico-temporais, espaciais e estilísticas de um escrito como esse, além da forma interna de cada língua, são de uma amplitude e complexidade ímpar. O que é complementado pelas teorias de Walter Benjamin, Jonathan Rée, Roman Ingarden e outros estudiosos acerca da tradução dessa tipologia textual, das quais se constata que a principal tarefa desse profissional é fazer uma tradução respeitável e bem-sucedida garantindo a sobrevida do original. Por fim, à luz de um dos textos de Humboldt e de sua tradução ao português, aplicam-se as teorias abordadas, mostrando quais desafios o tradutor encontra a nível histórico, estilístico, lexical e sintático. Análise que conduz à conclusão de que a tarefa de traduzir textos filosóficos é dificultada pela complexidade do pensamento e da linguagem de que um filósofo pode dispor, como é o caso de Wilhelm von Humboldt. A erudição de suas ideias, as obscuridades, as aparentes “contradições” no seu pensamento e o uso rigoroso da língua alemã podem ser argumentos que justificam a pouca difusão desse autor no Brasil.<br>This study aims at identifying the challenges the translator may come across when working with a philosophical text and, more specifically, with the texts of Wilhelm von Humboldt. Firstly, a summary of his biography, some facts about his life as a translator and the diffusion of his texts in Brazil are presented. Then, a theoretical foundation on the amplitude and complexity of a translator’s task working with philosophical texts, given their embeddedness in historical-temporal, spatial and stylistic contexts, as well as the languages internal forms, is outlined. This is complemented by the theories of Walter Benjamin, Jonathan Rée, Roman Ingarden and other scholars about the translation of this textual typology, which shows that the translator’s main task is to make a reputable and successful translation guaranteeing the survival of the original. Finally, in the light of one of Humboldt's texts and his translation into Portuguese, the theories are applied, showing which challenges the translator finds at a historical, stylistic, lexical and syntactic level. Analysis leads to the conclusion that the task of translating philosophical texts is hampered by the complexity of a philosopher’s thought and language, as in the case of Wilhelm von Humboldt. The erudition of his ideas, the obscurity, the apparent "contradictions" in his thinking and the rigorous use of the German language may be arguments that justify the little diffusion of this author in Brazil.

The dual is a grammatical number used in some languages to denote pairs of entities that belong together and form a unity. Traditionally dismissed in ancient treatises as a category of peculiar marginality, the dual became a central issue in Wilhelm von Humboldt’s (1767-1835) philosophy of language in the first decades of the 19th century. Especially in his essay Ueber den Dualis (1827), Humboldt set out to chart - for the first time ever - the empirical occurences of this grammatical form in the languages of the world and to bring into sharper focus the concept of duality and the traditional imagery linked to it. Rejecting the belief that the dual is simply a pleasant and yet redundant form of embellishment, Humboldt claimed that the study of the dual could grant access to the “ultimate foundations” of language and human community. According to Humboldt, the dual proves therefore crucial not only to understand the grammar system of a language, but also to investigate the mindset and the cultural negotiations thereby informed. To be sure, Humboldt’s text has been examined in a number of studies stating the seminal influence of its insights on the future development of modern linguistics. Yet much less attention has been paid to the historical contingency and the specific context in which Humboldt conceived the vision of a myth of duality in the Age of Goethe. The present research sets out to outline the cultural history of Humboldt’s ideas and tries to catch sight of the manifold connections in which Humboldt’s enquiry on the dual crosses the boundaries of linguistic antiquarianism and goes along with literary practices, anthropological reflexions and politial speculations of his own time.

Partint del fet que un dels aspectes indefugibles de la recepció d’aquesta tragèdia és la sensació de dificultat que hi va associada des del Renaixement, l’autor se centra en l’estudi dels hàbits discursius sobre Grècia i sobre la pràctica de la traducció que han fet possible incorporar l’obra a les literatures modernes. Després d’exposar la imatge tradicional d’Èsquil i l’escassa pervivència de l’Agamèmnon fins a la segona meitat del set-cents, la tesi examina, en el seu marc germànic, la visió de Grècia que va desenvolupar Humboldt, la interpretació que aquest autor va fer de l’Agamèmnon i la teoria de la traducció amb què s’hi va acostar; s’analitzen també passatges representatius de la versió i s’intenta escatir en quina mesura hi va influir el discurs de l’autor sobre Grècia i sobre la traducció; un capítol sobre la recepció del seu Agamèmnon clou la secció dedicada a Humboldt. A continuació s’aplica el mateix esquema expositiu a Carles Riba, amb un èmfasi especial en la seva concepció de l’humanisme, la seva relació amb l’Èsquil de Paul Mazon i els orígens de la seva teoria de la traducció. Finalment, se situen tots dos casos de recepció en el marc més ampli de la constitució de les literatures modernes. Sobre el rerefons de la nova visió del llenguatge i de la història que es desplega a l’Alemanya del segle XVIII, sobretot en l’obra de Herder, se subratlla la importància que els discursos sobre Grècia, sobre l’humanisme i sobre la traducció han tingut com a mecanismes d’universalització de la pròpia cultura i es posa de manifest que en aquest context l’Agamèmnon d’Èsquil, tòpicament identificat com una de les obres més difícils de l’antiguitat, ha fet un paper exemplar.<br>This thesis presents two case studies on the reception of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon: the interpretation and translation of the tragedy published by Wilhelm von Humboldt in 1816 and that of Carles Riba published in 1934. Taking into account that one of the inescapable aspects in the reception of Aeschylus’ play is the feeling of difficulty that is usually associated with it since the Renaissance, the author concentrates on studying the discourses on Greece and on translation which made it possible for the tragedy to be incorporated into modern literatures. After summing up Aeschylus’ traditional image and the limited reception of Agamemnon until the second half of the 18th century, this thesis examines Humboldt’s vision of Greece in its German framework, his interpretation of Agamemnon and the translation theory with which he approached the play. Representative sections of his translation are also analysed, and an attempt is made to elucidate the extent to which the target text is influenced by the author’s discourse on Greece and on translation. A chapter on the reception of his Agamemnon closes the part on Humboldt. Then, the same pattern is applied to Carles Riba, with special emphases on his conception of humanism, his relationship with Paul Mazon’s Aeschylus and the origins of his translation theory. Finally, both case studies in reception are placed in the broader framework of the development of modern literatures. On the basis of the new understanding of language and history that is deployed in 18th-century Germany, mainly in the work of Herder, the concluding section underscores the importance of discourses on Greece, on humanism and on translation as universalising mechanisms for local cultures and highlights how Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, traditionally identified as one of the most difficult ancient works, played an exemplary role in this context.

Von humboldt : sur la diversite de construction des langues humaines et son influence sur le developpement spirituel de l'humanite. Malgre son titre, on ne saurait la reduire a la seule philosophie du langage. Humboldt situe, sans viser la systematicite, le phenomene du langage dans la dynamique metaphysique - non la dialectique - qui parcourt l'ensemble du monde humain. Il faut donc, comme le montre le debut de sur la diversite. . . , preparer la comprehension de la langue et de sa diversite en rappelant qu'il y a une metaphysique humboldtienne; metaphysique de l'affirmation de l'humanite en des individualites toujours neuves, en des formes toujours reprises et remaniees, des expressions vivantes de l'absolu. La langue n'est cependant pas qu'un symbole parmi mille. En elle se resorbent, mais souvent pour se rouvrir autrement, la plupart des dualismes classiques, et d'abord celui du corps et de l'esprit. Elle est donc davantage que la voie royale vers l'ame de la nation, purifiee de la psychologie individuelle. On ne peut pas non plus la reduire a l'instrument du developpement de l'esprit humain, car elle est la presentation de ce dernier sous sa forme la plus pure : la pensee, acte indissociablement mental et articulatoire. La forme de la langue, exigence methodique nee de la metaphysique de l'individualite, est moins un concept acheve que le fil directeur de la recherche, qui permet de s'ouvrir a la diversite des langues comme a la specificite du langage. Von humboldt's last synthesis : the diversity of human language-structure and its influence on the mental development of mankind. In spite of this title, it could hardly be reduced to the mere philosophy of language. Without looking for a system, humboldt sets the phenomenon of language within the metaphysical dynamics - not dialectics - which run throughout the whole human world. As the beginning of the diversity. . . Shows, comprehension of language and of its diversity has to be prepared by acknowledging the existence of humboldt's metaphysics, a metaphysics of the affirmation of humanity within always renewed individualities, within forms which are always reshaped, like living expressions of the absolute. However, language is not one symbol amidst thousand. Most classical dualisms, and first the duality of matter and spirit, heal up thanks to language - although they often break open in another way again. So, language is more than the best way to penetrate the soul of the nation, purified from individual psychology. It cannot either be reduced to a tool of the development of the human spirit, for language is the same thing as the human spirit, presented in its least material form : thought, that is both a mental act and a phonic articulation. The form of language is more a regulative concept for research, a methodic demand issued from the metaphysics of individuality, than a completed concept. It allows to recognize both diversity of languages and specificity of language. Although language is similar to organisms, it is a particular domain - whose key concepts, more particularly analogy, have to be acknowledged - and the heart of the formation of thought as well as of the individual. The transcendental part of language, even including imagination, is not sufficient to exhaust its whole formative part; therefore the linguistics of speech and "character" clearly appear as necessary

The thesis starts by considering the controversial claim made by Joseph Hamburger that couched within the arguments for freedom in On Liberty are calls for high levels of social control, which threaten the conventional reading of Mill as a paradigmatic liberal thinker. The thesis tests this argument against the claims of the revisionary secondary literature, which attempts to reconcile Mill's utilitarian and liberal writings. Examining Hamburger's main line of argumentation, the thesis shows how Mill's thought is more influenced by the thought of August Comte than Mill or the secondary literature acknowledge, while still retaining some crucial differences. The thesis next considers another influence argued to be outside of the liberal tradition, Jeremy Bentham. Even though Mill admittedly inherits utilitarianism from Bentham, he expands the psychological notion of pleasure in fundamental ways, even at the cost of internal consistency. Moreover, the thesis argues that Bentham utilises particular forms of social control in a similar manner as Comte, which is ultimately what Mill rejects in both of their doctrines. However at the same time, it is Comte's positivist philosophy of history that enables Mill to reconcile his utilitarian foundation with his liberal prescriptions. Next, the thesis argues that it is ultimately the influence the Wilhelm von Humboldt that maintains Mill's thought as recognizably liberal. Von Humboldt introduces the notion of individuality to Mill, whose expression is the highest source of pleasure, and is the concept that prevents Mill's moral and political system from collapsing back into a more Comtean and Benthamite formulation. Finally, synthesizing these influences, the thesis uses a hierarchical conception of the self, as articulated by Harry Frankfurt and Gerald Dworkin, to reconcile the high levels of social control correctly perceived by Hamburger with Mill's unambiguous protection and valuation of negative liberty. This socially embedded and highly normative conception of autonomy underpins Mill's progressive doctrine, and preserves his inclusion in the liberal tradition.

Confucius is often considered a great teacher and the sage of Chinese philosophy for thousands of years. His teachings laid the foundation for an education system that prevailed for almost 2000 years before being outlawed by the revolution in 1905. What was considered valuable knowledge, and how was this argued in the actual works that were studied?    These are some of the questions that this essay examines and tries to answer.

G. De Humboldt (1767-1835) a élabore une théorie du langage qui semble inclassable, tant elle paraît en marge de la tradition philosophique comme de l'orientation linguistique dominante. L'étude se propose, comme préalable nécessaire à sa compréhension, de porter au jour les conditions de possibilité d'apparition d'une telle théorie. Le déplacement opéré par Humboldt en direction de l'univers langagier, entendu comme le lieu par excellence de l'interrogation sur le sens et la destination de l'humanité, ne peut s'appréhender, en effet, à partir du seul contexte linguistique, mais exige d'être rapporté à l'intuition fondamentale qui parcourt toute l'oeuvre et trouve son étincelle première dans une explication soutenue avec le criticisme. Le résultat est la connaissance philosophique de l'homme en vue de sa culture (Bildung), qui vise à unifier différents champs du savoir empirique de l'homme. Cette anthropologie philosophique, dont l'étude du langage donne l'ultime figure, est la résolution, autre que celle de l'idéalisme allemand, de la tache laissée en héritage par Kant, comprendre ce qu'il en est de l'homme. La thèse pose cette pensée comme point-origine, qui déplace l'interrogation du discours au langage, du sens pensé à la production infinie de sens. Elle conduit, à cette lumière, à relire l'histoire de la philosophie depuis Héraclite, à examiner ce qui est advenu depuis le savoir absolu de Hegel et à donner l'esquisse de cette autre orientation de la philosophie<br>W. Von Humboldt (1767-1835) has worked out a theory of language which appears so remote from the philosophical tradition and the main linguistic tendencies that it seems hardly possible to classify it. The purpose of this study is to make out the conditions for the possibility of the birth of such a theory. The shift operated by Humboldt towards the universe of language, meant as the locus par excellence of the interrogation on the meaning and the destiny of mankind, connot be apprehended simply from the linguistic context, but has to be related to the fundamental intuition which runs throughout his work, and finds its initial source in a continuous explanation with criticism. The result is the philosophical understanding of man, with his culture (bildung) as a goal, which aims at unifying different fields of the empirical knowledge of man. This philosophical anthropology, of which the study of the language gives the ultimate figure, is the resolution - different from that of german idealism - of the task left over by kant, the understanding of what man is. The thesis poses this thought as a starting point, which shifts the questioning from the discourse to the language, from the thought out meaning to the infinite production of meaning. It invites us, from this standpoint, to re-read the history of philosophy since heraclitus and to think of what took place since hegel's absolute knowledge, and sketch out this dif

A hipótese do trabalho é a de que a enunciação nietzscheana é um acontecimento na história da reflexão sobre a linguagem. Compreende-se o acontecimento, tal como o define Eduardo Guimarães, ou seja, não enquanto um fato no tempo, mas como aquilo que produz diferença em sua própria ordem. Tomada como acontecimento, a enunciação nietzscheana instaura sua própria diferença, e nela consideramos duas temporalidades distintas: por um lado, a que produz a filiação de Edward Sapir a Nietzsche, e que recorta Wilhelm von Humboldt como memorável; por outro, a que produz a filiação de Michel Pêcheux e Eni Orlandi a Nietzsche. A possibilidade de pensar as temporalidades em sua equivocidade demonstra que há um caminho na reflexão sobre a linguagem a ser trilhado nas sendas de um materialismo trágico ¿ a consideração de que a determinação histórica não é fruto de um processo maquínico, motorizado, mas que há algo do acaso que comparece, e que, nesse acaso, intervalo entre o equívoco e a linguagem, há ainda um espaço para a arte, para a criação, para r-existir ao sedentarismo dos sentidos<br>Abstract: From the perspective of the History of the Linguistic Ideas, this thesis investigates the affiliations to Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche in Language Sciences. The hypothesis of this work is that Nietzsche's enunciation is an event in the history of the reflection on language. We understand the event, as defined by Eduardo Guimarães, i.e., not as a fact in time, but as something that produces a difference in its own order. Taken as an event, Nietzsche¿s enunciation establishes its own difference, and in it we consider two different time frames: on the one hand, the one that produces Edward Sapir¿s affiliation to Nietzsche, and that highlithts Wilhelm von Humboldt as memorable; on the other hand, the one that produces Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi¿s affiliation to Nietzsche. The possibility of thinking temporalities in its own equivocity demonstrates that there is a path in the reflection on language to be taken in the paths of a tragic materialism - the consideration that the historical determination is not a result of a machine and motorized process, but that there is something from chance that appears, and that, in that chance, an interval between the misunderstanding and the language, there is still a space for art, for creation, to resist to the sedentary senses<br>Doutorado<br>Linguistica<br>Doutora em Linguística

La justice cosmopolite présuppose la justice dans l’ordre interne d’un État ainsi que la justice internationale, en se différenciant aussi bien de l’une que de l’autre pour s’interroger sur le juste et l’injuste qui porte sur l’être humain en tant que tel et en tant qu’individu singulier, au-delà de son statut en tant que habitant, ressortissant ou citoyen d’un État, prenant ainsi aussi en compte les générations futures et l’environnement. Être cosmopolite est une condition à dimension individuelle et collective, liée à la construction de soi (un soi cosmopolite), à la manière de penser et de vivre dans sa dimension quotidienne (l’action sous un angle cosmopolite), ainsi qu’à une réflexion sur ce qu’est le juste et l’injuste cosmopolite, sur l’émergence des groupes sociaux qui exigent le cosmopolitisme et sur la normativité des institutions nationales, internationales et supranationales qui veulent le réaliser. Ainsi, la notion de justice cosmopolite se révèle être un objet commun au champ de la philosophie, des sciences politiques, de la sociologie, des sciences de la culture, de la psychologie sociale ainsi que du droit. Nous analysons d’abord les enjeux de la justice cosmopolite tels qu’ils ont été formulés aux XVIII et XIX siècles chez Hobbes, Kant, Hegel et Alexander von Humboldt, en confrontant ses idées avec les débats contemporains; ensuite, les nouveaux problématiques de la justice cosmopolite qui se dessinent au XX siècle avec Freud, Kelsen, la Théorie Critique et Bourdieu; et enfin, quelques enjeux fondamentaux contemporains de la justice cosmopolite : les droits humains, le droit humanitaire, le droit des minorités et l’espace public mondial<br>Cosmopolitan justice presupposes justice in the order of a State as well as international justice, but differs from these two forms in that it questions the just and unjust concerning human beings as such and as a unique individual, beyond one’s status as a resident, national or citizen of a State, and also takes into account future generations and the environment. Wilhelm von Humboldt is known to most students of politics in the English speaking countries only as the man who was mentioned at the beginning of John Stuart Mill's On Liberty. Relatively little has been written about Humboldt as a political thinker. This study, therefore, attempts to prove that Humboldt liberalism represents a particular type of liberal thought different from that of other liberal thinkers Humboldt's political philosophy is examined on two levels: the influence of other theorists on his thinking and his own concepts and ideas. The first level traces the development of Humboldt's ideas by discussing and analyzing the main intellectual and philosophical influence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Since Humboldt was an original thinker, the ideas of others were seldom explicitly acknowledged and can therefore quite often be inferred only indirectly The second level discusses Humboldt's distinctive concepts such as Innerlichkeit, Harmony and particularly his understanding of Bildung, the focal point of his liberal philosophy, from which he viewed the place and function of the state These various concepts are reflected in Humboldt's only political work, The Limits of State Action. In this early liberal and utopian essay, Humboldt advocated extremely limited state functions in order to ensure freedom for Bildung, or self-education of all men. He argued that the absence of state action frees the individual for uncoerced community action and cooperation with others, and he even denied any participation of the state in education. As chief reformer of the Prussian educational system, however, he initiated positive state actions, which in his theory were left to private initiative only The concluding part of the dissertation deals with a comparison of Humboldt's and Mill's liberal theory by first examining their similarities and then their differences. By accepting Humboldt's ideas of Bildung and individualism, Mill's values differed substantially from the utilitarian principles of his predecessors. Whereas Humboldt wanted freedom of the individual from the tutelage of an absolutist, paternalistic and bureaucratic state, Mill feared the potentially much more oppressive democratic state as the instrument for legislating social tranquility and uniformity of thought and action. In this dissertation I retrace the notion of social individuality in early German liberal thought to respond to the ongoing criticism of liberal individuality as being at its foundation anti-social and atomistic. I concentrate on the exposition of this concept in the works of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Friedrich Schleiermacher at the turn of the 18th to 19th century, who I argue presented the clearest defense of individuality understood as interdependent uniqueness. Analyzing their relevant academic writings, speeches, sermons, letters, diary entries as well as political reports, I situate their conceptualization of social individuality within their wider thought, and examine what social institutions and practices as well as political consequences derive from understanding individuality as inherently social.
