This ethnographic study delves into the challenges women who migrate from developing countries to Europe face. By adopting a feminist and postcolonial lens, it aims to explore the intersection of gender and migration, shedding light on the experiences of migrant women that have received limited attention within existing migration law literature. The study examines how gender influences various forms of prejudice, marginalization, and constrained economic potential for these women. On the macro level it examines the role of the business cycle and its effect on part-time employment in the two groups of countries since 2001. The key result reveals that contrary to the West, the business cycle development exerts a significant negative effect on the part-time employment rate in Eastern Europe. When the economy operates below its potential, part-time employment tends to grow more than full-time employment. This finding is consistent with the

Social orders are shown to differ according to the extent to which competitive tendencies contained within them – economic, political, social and cultural – are resolved according to open, rule-based processes. Social orders are also assumed to exhibit a ‘double balance’ between political and economic systems in which political systems will tend to reflect the prevailing economic system within a society. Consequently, there is not yet a satisfactory answer as to how integrated and efficient financial markets were in the late Middle Ages and early modern era. Unlike the first group of countries, former Soviet Republics, covered by the Eastern Partnership initiative of the EU, have registered varying performances in building efficient market economies, the success

Domestic violence exists in various societies, including in the Republic of Moldova. This constitutes a serious form of violation of human rights. At the same time, domestic violence has a strong gender character, based on the social relations of inequality between women and men. From 2007 until now, the Republic of Moldova has continuously improved its mechanisms to prevent and combat domestic violence and adopted normative acts to ensure a systemic approach for preventing and combating this phenomenon, but also to guarantee an effective response of specialized institutions in given cases. This article contributes to the literature on wage discrimination by examining the consequences of sexual harassment in the workplace on wages for women in Europe. We model the empirical relationship between sexual harassment risk and wages for European women employees using individual-level data provided by the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS, Eurostat). We find that sexual harassment risk has a negative and statistically significant effect on wages of -0.03% on average for women in Europe. However, our empirical analysis uncovers the importance of considering the dynamics of workpla

This study describes the health dimension and some economic aspects of occupational safety in Latin America and the Caribbean. The study is the result of a joint effort by the IDB's Region 3 and Sustainable Development Departments which was undertaken to identify the major trends and issues related to improving occupational safety in Latin America and the Caribbean. It shows that the region has a very high disease burden in this area, and that economic patterns of employment and public regulatory responses make these health problems more acute than in Europe or North America. For years, women’s involvement in entrepreneurial activities has been widely advocated as part of economic development agendas. This is evidenced by numerous initiatives, projects, and roadmaps that promote women's integration into economic activities through entrepreneurship. Underpinning these efforts is the assumption that women's active participation in economic activities leads to improved well-being and empowerment. While this is an essential step toward improving women’s conditions, the realities are more complex. Beyond the economic contributions of such entrepreneurial activities, oth

According to conventional wisdom, health and education are important factors for economic and social development: they improve productivity and income distribution, and the poor gain the most. Nonetheless, in many regions of the world not all members of society receive these services equally. To a large extent, women are left out of health and education systems; as a consequence, they constitute an economically and socially disadvantaged group. In a globalised world, the effects of climate change are likely to cascade across borders. Climate impacts in one location may have far reaching consequences in other places by affecting trade, migration, investments, and foreign policy objectives. Whether such cascading effects are likely to materialise depends in turn on a number of social, economic, and political factors that reinforce or attenuate the effects of climate change on economic development, migration, political stability, etc. These moderating conditions are crucial when considering possible challenges in connection with climate

These results reflected uneven economic conditions in Latin America's major trade partners. In Europe, economic setbacks resulted in a 5% drop in demand for Latin American exports, while lower growth in the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea sharply slowed the region's export growth to Asia as a whole, f
