This work is based on a study of 225 women conducted in the mid-1970s, entitled "Women, Ethnicity, and Mental Health." Follow-up interviews in the late 1980s with eighteen of the women updated their reactions. Italian, Jewish, and Slavic immigrants made up the principal ethnic groups in Pittsburgh in 1900 and are the focus of this survey. Changes in peasant economies and religious pogroms drove thousands of families from eastern and southeastern Europe to seek better opportunities in the United States.

The potential for PBDEs to disrupt normal neuroendocrine pathways resulting in depression and other neurological symptoms is largely understudied. This study examined whether PBDE exposure in pregnant women was associated with antenatal depressive symptomatology. The purpose of this research is to understand definitions of what it means to be a “good” parent as described by parents and child development specialists at a family service organization in the Southeastern United States. Previous research on social reproduction and concerted cultivation have opened up pathways to understanding how social and economic inequality manifest in family life and the social structures of which they are a part. This ethnographic study is an effort to contribute to an anthropology of parenting by unveiling the ways that definitions of “good” parenting in middle-class

She preferred to express her philosophical views in works of fiction: She Came to Stay (1943), All Men Are Mortal (1946), and The Mandarins (1954).
