Abstract In the decades before Confederation in 1949, one important link between the Dominion of Canada and the reluctant tenth province was the increasing reliance of New- foundland students upon Canadian institutions for advanced education and training. Five volumes of Who's Who in Newfoundland, published between 1927 and 1961, provide biographical information on 344 individuals who left the colony to pursue educational opportunities abroad. The major focus for such opportunities shifted over time from Great Britain to the mainland of Canada. Institutions in the Maritime provinces drew over

Resumen
The model for the modern university and college began its long evolution c.1,000 years ago in medieval Western Europe. The ‘12th-century renaissance’ saw the emergence of universities and colleges at Bologna, Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge drawing on earlier Hellenistic learning, sustained by ‘the Golden Age of Islam’ and added to during ‘the Dark Ages’ of Western Europe. ‘The enduring idea and changing ideal of the university’ explains how medieval universities were, essentially, businesses delivering concrete skills and competencies through education to fee-paying students. Distinctly utilitarian and vocational, they opened a door to professional life for their students. Now we talk of them crucially contributing to the ‘knowledge society’.

Universities and colleges are, overwhelmingly, about students and in most countries, they are a pretty diverse group, with varying aspirations. ‘Students: getting in, getting on, getting out’ considers the student journey from the admissions process, through induction, to the main part of the student journey involving day-to-day work on the academic programme, assessment, and then moving on to further study or to a graduate job. It asks whether students are partners or customers in the university/college–student relationship and explains how the picture has changed in recent years with the expansion of higher education, moving from an elite system to a mass system, and the introduction of student tuition fees.

Resumen
It’s important to understand the finances of colleges and universities, budgeting, and sources and uses of funding. Costs at colleges and universities are increasing for a variety of reasons. Some costs involve facilities intended to attract talent, both in terms of faculty and students. Many costs involve people who do not teach, such as administrators. These individuals are doing work that is either required (government compliance) or expected (student mental health or career counseling). So, it is a stretch to sustain the argument that rising costs in higher education are singularly a function of unnecessary layers of administration. Many universities are using innovative approaches to cut costs and improve revenue streams to their institutions.

Resumen
This chapter explores the processes and discourses of enrollment expansion, as well as the mechanisms colleges and universities have used to help improve the prospects of students who are most at risk of noncompletion. The sociologist James E. Rosenbaum (1998) coined the term “college for all” to describe the aspirations of policymakers and college and university administrators to extend college opportunities as widely as possible. Access and completion are the drivers of the educational revolution that has made college seem less like a choice than a necessity, but the revolution could not have occurred unless it had preserved and indeed added ways for ambitious students to acquire status at college and beyond graduation.

More students can attend colleges and universities from a distance due to broader access and technological advances. Therefore, facilitators are facing the challenge of providing more accommodations and modifications to nontraditional students. The provision of these special services, which have traditionally been provided by special educators, are receiving limited attention. Special educators are educated to make these adjustments on an individual basis in the elementary and secondary levels. However, this has not been the traditional role of the university professor. With today's mass enrollments in online courses, procedures for providing accommodations to all students have become a significant challenge. This chapter will review research on online course design and implementation to address the needs of students with disabilities.

Resumen
Major secular universities do not teach theology; they teach religious studies, if they teach anything about religion at all. It is impossible to imagine a Catholic university without theology. Four characteristics of Catholic theology show the unique contribution the discipline makes to Catholic higher education. False dichotomies are identified: critical or catechetical and faith or reason. This chapter describes the dramatic changes over the past sixty years in who teaches theology and what is taught to lay students at Catholic universities. Theologians need to address effectively the problem of widespread religious illiteracy among most college students. The Vatican document on Catholic higher education, Ex corde ecclesiae, offers a broad and demanding vision of the type of theological and moral education necessary for Catholic colleges and universities. The expectations of Catholic theologians in the academy and beyond it are daunting.

There has been a good deal already written about health and safety with education abroad at four-year colleges and universities. Although the authors found significant publications with a university focus, they found no published literature that specifically addresses community college overseas health, safety, and legal issues. The purpose of this chapter is to review what the literature already says about health and safety challenges and apply it to community colleges. In so doing, they bring forth US court cases and real-life examples at community college education abroad programs in order to ground recommendations and strategies for responding to today's challenges. In the same way that community colleges implement “on campus” policies and procedures to both limit and respond to student health and safety crises, community colleges should also implement policies and procedures to limit “study abroad” risks to students and be prepared to act if issues arise overseas. This chapter provides essential strategies to improve health and safety and legal standards for community college education abroad programs.

This chapter explores institutional responses to undocumented undergraduate students from the perspective of staff. Data from 110 key staff members (employed in admissions, financial aid, student services, campus ministry, and so on) from across all twenty-eight institutions were collected through an online survey, were analyzed, and presented in this chapter. The first section highlights the results of the survey and interviews conducted with staff at Jesuit colleges and universities. The second section presents a five-part case study of Loyola University Chicago initiatives. These initiatives were informed by the engagement of Loyola University Chicago in the research partnership, the results of which are presented, and the dissemination of the Ford-funded report composed in collaboration with Fairfield University and Santa Clara University.

This study explores the need as well as the feasibility of implementing a media literacy cognate at Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationwide. Of the approximately 40 colleges and universities with media studies or communications departments or schools, only three offer a named media literacy course. Similarly, of the communications and media programs with ACEJMC accreditation, only one, Howard University offers a media literacy course. Using diffusion of information theory to explore the knowledge of and eventual adoption of media literacy courses at HBCUs, the study seeks to provide an introduction to schools about their need to teach media literacy to students across the college and university curriculum.

Resumen
Our system of university admissions is medieval—and was created in 1961 when UCAS, originally called UCCA (the Universities Central Council on Admissions, now the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services), was set up. We have a single national system of competitive application to university, based on the assumption that most students will move away from home. It is very different from the classic Continental and American model in which you go to your local college or university for a tertiary education, which is neither highly selective nor highly specialized. Nearly half of American undergraduates study at a two-year college and then obtain what we would have called an ordinary degree. If they have higher ACT or SAT scores they are more likely to start at a university providing a full four-year course from the beginning but this is still likely to be in their home state and open to students who can arrive after two years at a college. Then if they really have an aptitude for academic study and wish to specialize or need to get a professional qualification they do a postgraduate Masters course: perhaps at this point they may move out of the state. Ask an American professional where they went to university and you will be told which business or law or medical school they went to as a postgraduate. But they may well have started their undergraduate studies somewhere very different and much closer to home. And their whole time in higher education is likely to have been longer than in England. The English system by contrast is the medieval model of a young gentleman leaving home (or boarding school—meaning it would be very peculiar to return home for university) to go to Oxford or Cambridge. It has been shaped by a long history as a unitary state with very few universities and nationwide migration of students to get to them. It is so deeply embedded that the decision to set up the nationwide admissions system provoked very little discussion or challenge. So that medieval model now applies to a million English undergraduates and over a hundred universities.
