Resumen
In this paper, I address the problem of auxiliary selection in Standard Italian and in Southern Italo-Romance varieties. In the former, the auxiliary depends on the argument structure, in the latter on the person feature of the subject. However, the features of the arguments play a crucial role even in languages where auxiliary selection is argument structure- driven. Therefore, I propose that auxiliary selection is the result of person Agree in both systems. Cross-linguistic variation is due to a single syntactic parameter (the ordering of the features on Perf) and to different inventories of vocabulary entries. In this contribution, I focus on Italo-Romance varieties, in particular on person-driven systems and on so-called mixed systems. I show that the apparently very different systems of auxiliary selection in Standard Italian and in Italo-Romance varieties are more similar than it seems: not only auxiliary selection in Italian is Agree for the person feature, but also many alleged person-driven varieties are indeed argument-structure-based systems.

Resumen
The variation of the two past tense auxiliaries (HAVE and BE) is a well-studied phenomenon in European languages, especially in the West Germanic varieties. So far, however, the situation in Eastern Yiddish has not been examined. This paper focuses on auxiliary selection in these Yiddish dialects based on data from the Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry, which were collected in the 1960s. Like most of the current works on this topic, the following analysis uses and discusses Sorace’s (1993, 2000) Auxiliary Selection Hierarchy, which allows to examine the Yiddish structures in light of historical and diatopic evidence from other Germanic varieties, particularly German and Dutch. The main focus is on intransitive verbs that show a high degree of variation—state verbs, controlled and uncontrolled motional process verbs, and change-of-state verbs. However, the Auxiliary Selection Hierarchy also has weaknesses, as is demonstrated in the following.*

Resumen
Shannon (1990) argues that the notions of lexical aspect (Aktionsart) and transitivity are a central part of perfect auxiliary variation. This paper builds on Shannon's (1993, 1995) analyses of perfect auxiliary selection in German and other related languages. Shannon accounts for perfect auxiliary variation by means of prototypes for high transitivity and high mutativity as well as the notion of Aktionsart. This paper examines the transitivity/mutativity parameters and the concept of Aktionsart using the examples of perfect auxiliary + past participle found in the Old Saxon Heliand. An examination of some 150 examples reveals that the choice of auxiliary can be explained by Aktionsart and a definition of transitivity that is characterized by conceptual imagery.

Resumen
The present study presents the issue of auxiliary selection in English and Romanian, aiming to underline the specificities of the two languages, and contrast them in terms of differences and similarities as regards auxiliary selection. We analyse the restrictions in the selection of the progressive/imperfective and perfective aspects (that is, the auxiliaries have or be) with different semantic classes of verbs (states, processes, activities) in English, and the difference of selection for perfective and imperfective in Romanian by contrast with the English selection. Furthermore, the present paper also illustrates the differences in auxiliary passive selection between Romanian and English.

Resumen
Statistical inference is considered for variables of interest, called primary variables, when auxiliary variables are observed along with the primary variables. We consider the setting of incomplete data analysis, where some primary variables are not observed. Utilizing a parametric model of joint distribution of primary and auxiliary variables, it is possible to improve the estimation of parametric model for the primary variables when the auxiliary variables are closely related to the primary variables. However, the estimation accuracy reduces when the auxiliary variables are irrelevant to the primary variables. For selecting useful auxiliary variables, we formulate the problem as model selection, and propose an information criterion for predicting primary variables by leveraging auxiliary variables. The proposed information criterion is an asymptotically unbiased estimator of the Kullback–Leibler divergence for complete data of primary variables under some reasonable conditions. We also clarify an asymptotic equivalence between the proposed information criterion and a variant of leave-one-out cross validation. Performance of our method is demonstrated via a simulation study and a real data example.

The paper presents an Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for both variable and covariance selection in the context of logistic mixed effects models. This algorithm allows us to sample solely from standard densities, with no additional tuning being needed. We apply a stochastic search variable approach to select explanatory variables as well as to determine the structure of the random effects covariance matrix. For logistic mixed effects models prior determination of explanatory variables and random effects is no longer prerequisite since the definite structure is chosen in a data-driven manner in the course of the modeling procedure. As an illustration two real-data examples from finance and tourism studies are given. (author's abstract)

Resumen
The nuclear fusion is a type of energy source that is very clean and technically limitless. ITER will be the first milestone along the road toward the production of fusion energy. It will be an experimental reactor that will prove the feasibility of technologies and its results will be helpful for the future steps. Among the technologies that will be tested in ITER, a particular interest is referred to the possibility of tritium breeding thus making the fuel for the reaction inexhaustible. The European studies for this type of technology are focused on a system denominated WCLL-TBM. The aim of this thesis is the definition and commercial selection of instrumentation of two of the six ancillary systems that support the WCLL-TBM. Obviously, it is not expected that a complete mapping of the instrumentation will be available at the end of this activity. So, the final output requested by NIER Ingegneria, the company through which the internship activities were carried out, is the collection of all the actions taken to find suitable commercial models. Firstly, a brief analysis is used to describe the ancillary systems considered in which the instruments are located: this is the identification phase. This is followed by the phase where instruments are defined in terms of their required properties. Both standard properties have been considered during the definition of an instrument, as well as those specific to the nuclear application. The instruments are then classified based on defined criteria, grouping instruments with similar properties. In this way a low number of instruments is searched on the market. The selection phase concludes the process: a series of possible suppliers have been identified and contacted to obtain specific models that can be suitable. As final output, a specific check regarding required properties and the ones of the commercial models is performed. At the end, the global view of the results obtained, and the open action are highlighted.

Sorace, Antonella. "Lexical conditions in syntactic knowledge : auxiliary selection in native and non-native grammars of Italian". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26955.

Resumen
This study has both a theoretical and a methodological dimension. Theoretically, it is concerned with variation and indeterminacy in linguistic acceptability judgments. Methodologically, it involves the application of a rigorous procedure for the elicitation of judgment data that is sensitive to informants' variable or indeterminate intuitions. The theoretical focus is on the linguistic intuitions of native and non-native speakers of Italian about a number of grammatical phenomena related to the choice between the auxiliaries ESSERE ('be') and AVERE ('have') with non-transitive (unaccusative and unergative) verbs. It is argued that a purely syntactic account of unaccusativity is insufficient to capture the variation exhibited by these verbs. In particular, it is claimed that the unmarked selection of ESSERE with unaccusatives and of AVERE with unergatives in the present perfect tense is sensitive not only to a hierarchy of syntactic configurations (as assumed by the Government-Binding version of the Unaccusativity Hypothesis) but also to lexical hierarchies that subdivide the range of unaccusative and unergative verbs along semantic dimensions. Such hierarchies distinguish 'core', or prototypical, types of verbs from peripheral ones, and are consistent with the historical evolution of auxiliaries in Romance. However, auxiliary selection in syntactically marked 'restructuring' constructions, induced by certain Raising and Control verbs, is not sensitive to these semantic dimensions. It was predicted that the interaction between syntactic and semantic constraints would give rise to systematic variability in native speakers' linguistic intuitions, manifested in consistent and determinate acceptability judgments on core types of verbs, and variable or indeterminate judgments on peripheral types of verbs. It was also predicted that non-natives would differ from natives in terms of the extent to which indeterminate judgments penetrated from the periphery to the core.

This thesis investigates the intricate phenomenon of auxiliary selection in two Romance languages, namely Italian and French. The primary objective is to elucidate the factors that influence the choice between the auxiliaries ‘be' and ‘have' in the formation of the perfect tense. The study focuses on verbs that can select both auxiliaries, commonly known as peripheral verbs (Sorace 2000), which, despite extensive individual examination, have not been comprehensively analyzed (Giancarli 2015).The central research questions addressed are: What characteristics enable these verbs to select both auxiliaries? Which factors determine the predominance of one auxiliary over the other? What is the relative weight of factors such as agentivity and telicity in auxiliary selection (Sorace 2000)? For the first time, this research systematically explores auxiliary selection in Italian and French using corpus analysis and natural language processing (NLP). By integrating these methods, the study aims to identify the most significant factors influencing auxiliary choice in intransitive verbs with double auxiliation. The research combines qualitative analysis of manually annotated occurrences from SketchEngine (Kilgarriff et al., 2014) with quantitative analysis using statistical models to determine the most significant parameters in auxiliary selection. The findings reveal the paramount importance of semantic, syntactic, and morphological aspects in the choice of ‘be' or ‘have'. Notably, telicity is found to be less relevant for these verbs. The study also highlights significant differences between Italian and French. Italian verbs are categorized into full verbs and semi-auxiliaries. For full verbs, internal cause and human traits are crucial factors in auxiliary selection. For semi-auxiliary verbs, the type of infinitive and the human trait associated with particular infinitives are shown to be significant. In French, the type of construction heavily influences auxiliary choice.By providing comprehensive answers to previously unexplored areas, this study aligns with and extends the existing literature. It significantly enhances our understanding of verb categorization and auxiliary selection, with substantial implications for both theoretical and applied linguistics. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of integrative methodological approaches for analyzing complex linguistic phenomena

Traditional project portfolio selection methods tend to confer greater privilege to profit and/or outgrowth than to other dimensions and aspects; however, public institutes have some different dimensions, such as social development, that go beyond the economic and financial aspects to ground the institutional mission. This context is appropriate for complementary selection methods or based on different priorities from private companies methods. This thesis proposes to systematize an auxiliary instrument for R&D projects selection processes, aiming to better meet Public Institutes needs. The systematization of relations, calculated by an algorithm, enables and valorizes the manifested understanding driven by different dimensions that underlie the institutional mission. The proposed auxiliary instrument proved to be effective to better meet the diverse dimensions that drive a Public Institute, and to be fully compatible with the operational dynamics of traditional models for project selection and project portfolio management. Such effectiveness and operational compatibility were checked using a project selection simulation of projects from a Public Institute portfolio. The ranking of the portfolio resulted differently from the procedure commonly used by the Institute. In summary, although the instrument proposed is only complementary to traditional methods of project selection, it can contribute to project selection processes that better consider different perspectives and multiple dimensions that characterize Public Institutes management.

Li, Yuqin. "Factors Affecting the Structural Integrity of Wood-Based Composites: Elevated Temperature and Adhesive Bonding". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/102927.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study focuses on factors that affect the structural integrity of wood-based composites. Wood-based composites exposed to fire may decompose due to the elevated temperatures, resulting in a degradation in performance. Thermal modelling can only predict the structural integrity of construction materials in fire if it is given accurate inputs. Consequently, methods for the characterization of the thermal, physical, and mechanical behaviors of wood and wood-based composites are selected, designed, and benchmarked. The relevant thermal and physical responses characterized includes porosity, permeability and thermal diffusivity. Common construction materials (white pine board, medium density fiberboard and spruce 24) are characterized from room temperature to complete decomposition. The characterization techniques and processes are based on existing literature and relevant ASTM standards. To reduce the number of experiments required for future material characterization, estimates based upon the degree of decomposition and the measured values for the virgin and charred materials are used. For porosity and thermal diffusivity, these models allow values at intermediate temperatures to be estimated with measurements at room temperature and complete decomposition and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). We find that permeability depends heavily on the microstructure of materials and should be measured independently at the conditions of interest. An additional important aspect of the performance of wood-based composites is the fracture behavior of wood/adhesive systems. Adhesive bonding enables many engineered wood products such as furniture and structural wood joints and the adhesive fracture toughness often determines the durability. The conventional characterization method for wood/adhesive fracture resistance relies on samples with machined grain angles designed to funnel cracks to the adhesive interface. This method of sample preparation is difficult and time-consuming for certain wood species. In this work, a practical and efficient method is developed to characterize adhesive fracture energy of adhesively bonded veneer systems. In the method, auxiliary aluminum adherends are bonded to the veneers in an effort to drive the crack to the wood/adhesive interface. The method is applied to rotary-peeled veneers and saw-cut veneers produced from three species of wood bonded with three commonly used adhesives. The new tests method yields a high interfacial failure rate and successfully identifies differences in the performance of the three adhesives. SPG (one species of the rotary-peeled veneers) demonstrates a rising R-curve behavior (an increase in the fracture toughness with crack length) when bonded on the loose side. This increase in fracture toughness is observed to be a result of adhesive-substrate interaction, which is a developing process zone behind the crack tip consisting of bridged wood ligaments.
Doctor of Philosophy
Construction materials exposed to elevated temperatures from fires may reach temperatures where the material decomposes from the original material to a char. Protected and unprotected structural timber products exposed to fires may exhibit this behavior resulting in a degradation of performance. Understanding the thermal and physical responses of these materials is crucial in evaluating the materials behavior in fire. Additionally, many wood-based products (such as furniture) rely on adhesive bonds. Consequently, their usefulness is determined by the performance of those bonds. In this work, methods are developed to measure key properties impacting the behavior of wood-based systems at elevated temperatures, such as that experienced in fires and when they are subjected to forces attempting to debond one wood material from another. These techniques are demonstrated on common building materials (white pine board, medium density fiberboard and spruce 24) and wood veneers from three different species bonded with three different adhesives. Mathematical models are developed to expand the use of the data beyond the specific conditions for which it is measured.

Resumen
Ventilation problems raised with the beginning of underground mining. In underground mining, to provide safe and healthy working conditions, ventilation should be designed properly. Especially in the planning stage of the project, to design ventilation properly is very important. The latest upgrade of the popular ventilation simulation program, known as VnetPC 2000, has been applied for the ventilation design. In this study simulation is conducted to both auxiliary and main ventilation at Ç
ayirhan G Field. Information describing the geometry of a ventilation network, airway characteristics and locations, characteristics of different fans were prepared as an input. The output includes predicted airflows, frictional pressure drops, air power, losses in airway and fan operating points for different trials. After different trials it has been found that for auxiliary ventilation, where minimum required amount of air is 6 m3/s, ENGART, 30A 40SCV/60HR model fan which is the most economical one was selected. For main ventilation system, 5 fans which provide airflow more than minimum requirement were chosen. Among them the most economical one, that is ALPHAIR-5400VAX2100 HB, was selected for the mine.

Resumen
An efficient route for the synthesis of a new highly selective and easily displaced chiral auxiliary I for the asymmetric boron-mediated aldol reaction has been developed in 5 steps from norephedrine. The novel chiral auxiliary has been shown to mediate anti and syn propionate and glycolate aldol reactions with a range of aldehydes in excellent yield (60-98%) and with good to excellent diastereoselectivity. Details of the methods which have been used to assign the absolute and relative stereochemistry of the aldol adducts are also summarised. The facile displacement of auxiliary I with a range of nucleophiles under very mild conditions to give the corresponding phosphonate esters, alcohols, acids, SNAc thiolesters and methyl esters has been demonstrated.

Resumen
Chapter 3 extends the investigation of verb placement to other Romance varieties, in order to expand the macro- and micro-typologies identified in Chapter 2. It starts with a description of the placement of the present indicative verb across a selection of varieties of French, Romanian, Spanish, Catalan, European Portuguese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Following the methodology of Chapter 2, the remainder of the discussion is devoted to the description of cases of microvariation attested across the varieties above, which emerge once a selection of structural and interpretative distinctions are considered, such as lexical and auxiliary verbs, ‘have’ and ‘be’ auxiliaries, finite and non-finite verbs (cf. participle and infinitive), as well as a selection of modally, temporally, and aspectually marked forms (e.g. subjunctive, conditional, past, future, imperfect).

Resumen
Chapter 2 investigates the differing patterns of verb placement attested across a selection of varieties of the Italian peninsula. After a description of the placement of the present indicative verb in the northern, central, and southern regional varieties of Italian, as well as in a selection of northern, central, upper southern, extreme southern, and Sardinian dialects, a macro-typology of verb placement in the Italian peninsula is drawn. The rest of the chapter is devoted to the description of the microvariation attested across the above varieties which emerges once different verb typologies are considered, such as lexical and auxiliary verbs, ‘have’ and ‘be’ auxiliaries, finite and non-finite verbs (cf. participle and infinitive), as well as a selection of modally, temporally, and aspectually marked forms (e.g. subjunctive, conditional, past, future, imperfect).

Resumen
Abstract The potentiostat has been used in electrochemical studies of corrosion processes for many years, and although it is possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, there are still occasions when the implementation of the measurements is less than satisfactory. This paper provides an overview of some of the misconceptions, misuse, (and abuse?), with respect to Reference electrodes, Luggin Probes, inert Auxiliary Electrodes and Working Electrodes. Among the topics discussed will be; working electrode size and geometry, choice of reference electrode, the role of the auxiliary electrode and selection of suitable electrode materials.

Resumen
Abstract SELMATEL is a prototype of an expert system designed for the selection of materials for tubes exposed to elevated temperatures, such as in a refinery furnace for crude heating. The system is being developed with VP-Expert™. This tool allows to represent the knowledge with a rule based structure. Data bases and auxiliary Fortran routines are also used. The final structure will be modular, each of the modules corresponding to the aspects to be considered. These are: internal corrosion, external corrosion, creep, thickness calculation, cracking, fragilization and materials selection itself. This paper describes the development of the expert system, as well as the knowledge representation used.

Resumen
Abstract The wheel test, which is a weight loss method, determines the corrosion rate based on weight changes before and after corrosion. The wheel test is cheap and simple, but requires a longer time than is required by other methods, and it also requires an analytical balance that has a high accuracy. Tafel extrapolation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) can be obtained in a shorter amount of time, but this method must consider the geometry of measurement, the selection of a suitable test environment, and the best techniques. In this research, the ratio of the carbon steel corrosion rate is determined in an acetic acid buffer solution of pH 4-6 at temperatures of 25 °C, 45 °C, and 65 °C. Research is varying with regard to the size of the working electrode, the auxiliary electrode, and the distance between the working electrode and auxiliary electrode, as well as the concentration of inhibitor. Results show that this inhibitor can work effectively at a pH of 4 and temperatures up to 45 °C when the size of the working electrode is greater than the auxiliary electrode and the distance between the working electrode with auxiliary electrode is 1.2 cm, with the diameter of the working electrode as 1.2 cm and 0.6 cm for auxiliary electrode.

Resumen
Abstract The need for galling resistance in corrosion resistant stabs of hydraulic lines determined the selection of Nitronic 60 alloy as the material to be joined to 316 SS tubing by autogenous orbital GTAW process. These lines, which are operating in about 500 Completion Risers Joints for more than 3 years exposed to a mixture of seawater, mud, oil and eventually products of acidification in the annular space, have shown good performance except for an unusual case of cracking of the Nitronic stab. After 14 months laid in the Macae Yard without operation, and without cathodic protection, a specific Riser Joint was hydrostatically tested and two of the eighth hydraulic lines failed. Although a complete metallurgical investigation was not possible, since the equipment went back to operation after changing the lines, a metallographic analysis of the two cracked lines allowed the determination of stress corrosion cracking as the failure mechanism. This paper illustrates the metallurgical results obtained by scanning electron microscopy and by optical microscopy, as well as the use of a microprobe as an auxiliary technique. The failure was associated to the long time in stagnant conditions and an inspection program was adopted to avoid other failures. Stabs from other Risers, not exposed to the same stagnant conditions were also characterized and are presented.

Resumen
Abstract The recent spike in oil prices has spurred research for stable energy sources that do not rely on foreign suppliers. Nuclear energy has a renewed focus which requires a closer look at the materials of construction. Various types of corrosion in nuclear service water piping systems have limited the use of general stainless steels. Due to highly corrosive environments, general stainless steels are being replaced by super austenitic alloys with increased molybdenum content. Examples, such as microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC), have caused failure of 304L stainless steel. Alloy UNS N08367 has been a replacement for 304L stainless steel in main and auxiliary service water piping systems. The improved performance of this alloy has promoted its use in intake screens, piping, and precipitators. With the current search for more efficient and independent power generation; nuclear power plants have incentive to improve the process and equipment for both existing and new power plants. Globally, the push for alternative power requires better designed plants to withstand the ever increasing corrosive environments. This paper describes current corrosion issues of general 300 series stainless steels in nuclear power plants. An in depth analysis shows how use of the 6 percent molybdenum alloy N08367 in various nuclear applications reduce maintenance costs, increase quality, and improve safety. The conclusion of this paper and presentation is that 6 percent molybdenum alloys provide enough longevity in to justify increased material and fabrication costs. This paper will show how this development in alloy selection has proved successful in previous nuclear systems as well as the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Thomas, Strobel. A contrastive approach to grammatical doubts in some contemporary Germanic languages (German, Dutch, Swedish). Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M., marzo de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21248/gups.72278.

Texto completo
Resumen
Unquestionably (or: undoubtedly), every competent speaker has already come to doubt with respect to the question of which form is correct or appropriate and should be used (in the standard language) when faced with two or more almost identical competing variants of words, word forms or sentence and phrase structure (e.g. German "Pizzas/Pizzen/Pizze" 'pizzas', Dutch "de drie mooiste/mooiste drie stranden" 'the three most beautiful/most beautiful three beaches', Swedish "större än jag/mig" 'taller than I/me'). Such linguistic uncertainties or "cases of doubt" (cf. i.a. Klein 2003, 2009, 2018; Müller & Szczepaniak 2017; Schmitt, Szczepaniak & Vieregge 2019; Stark 2019 as well as the useful collections of data of Duden vol. 9, Taaladvies.net, Språkriktighetsboken etc.) systematically occur also in native speakers and they do not necessarily coincide with the difficulties of second language learners. In present-day German, most grammatical uncertainties occur in the domains of inflection (nominal plural formation, genitive singular allomorphy of strong masc./neut. nouns, inflectional variation of weak masc. nouns, strong/weak adjectival inflection and comparison forms, strong/weak verb forms, perfect auxiliary selection) and word-formation (linking elements in compounds, separability of complex verbs). As for syntax, there are often doubts in connection with case choice (pseudo-partitive constructions, prepositional case government) and agreement (especially due to coordination or appositional structures). This contribution aims to present a contrastive approach to morphological and syntactic uncertainties in contemporary Germanic languages (mostly German, Dutch, and Swedish) in order to obtain a broader and more fine-grained typology of grammatical instabilities and their causes. As will be discussed, most doubts of competent speakers - a problem also for general linguistic theory - can be attributed to processes of language change in progress, to language or variety contact, to gaps and rule conflicts in the grammar of every language or to psycholinguistic conditions of language processing. Our main concerns will be the issues of which (kinds of) common or different critical areas there are within Germanic (and, on the other hand, in which areas there are no doubts), which of the established (cross-linguistically valid) explanatory approaches apply to which phenomena and, ultimately, the question whether the new data reveals further lines of explanation for the empirically observable (standard) variation.
