Resumen
People of Warnasari village found an iron boat on the bottom of Situ Cileunca Lake, the boat is made from iron sheets with flat keel. The iron sheets was bound together using iron rivets and the boat have hooks that look like use to attact to other boats. Flat keel boat usually use on calm water such as river or lakes, boat using rivet usually build before 1930’s as after that year boats were build using welding technic. It’s assumed that boat from Situ Cileunca was used for ferrying goods or peoples, the exact function can’t determine precisely due to lack of data.

Resumen
Architecture is one of the arts of cultural product, archipelago culture rooted in traditional culture, vice versa. Traditional architecture is very diverse in Indonesia, along with the diversity of its ethnic. Traditional architecture is building with form and function which has its own characteristic, inherited from generation to generation that can be used to hold activity by the people around it. Therefore, traditional architecture is the cultural expression and direct reflection in presenting something by its people. Some Nusantara Architectures adopt boat as the representation for building’s form. Therefore, the author is interested to prove the correlation of boat as representation in some archipelago architectures. This research uses data search method through literature studies by collecting data on some researched archipelago architecture buildings' form and construction system. From these data, a correlation between boat form representation and construction system used in boats and buildings can be concluded. Keyword: Nusantara Architecture, Form of Architecture, Boat Construction, Boat Representation.

Resumen
Aim: In 2022, on the lakes Zegrzynskie and the Orzysz, there were carried out tests of a motor boat with a hull made in HDPE technology and a construction similar to a hybrid boat (rigid-inflatable boat, RIB). The aim of the tests was to examine the operational capabilities of the SRB53 motor boats and obtain preliminary information on the configuration of the equipment. Introduction: High performance motor boats should constitute standard equipment of lifeguards. There are motor boats on the market using high density polyethylene (HDPE) for the construction of their hulls. Methodology: The survey involved 57 people, experts, representatives of public administration, NATO soldiers, police, and rescue services, as well as enterprises and non-governmental entities operating in the field of water rescue. The working hypothesis was assumed that probably motor boats as a combination of HDPE technology with a hybrid boat design could match the operational rib boats and have an advantage in terms of durability and resistance to hull damage. A diagnostic survey was used on a small sample with research techniques, i.e., observation, interview, and test, as well as research tools in the form of an observation sheet. The research was prepared, carried out and closed in the following order: development of the research procedure, collection of research material, development of results, theoretical analysis of the obtained material and derivation of conclusions. The scope of the boat study included going away and nailing to the quay, the boat’s behaviours when making turns and abrupt turns in both directions at different speeds, and the hull durability test. Results: The test results and opinions were positive, many advantages of the hull of the tested boat were indicated, with one negative parameter – a higher weight compared to traditional rescue boats. The working hypothesis was proved: motor boats in HDPE technology with a hybrid boat design are equal in terms of operation to RIB boats and are more durable and resistant to impacts. Innovative HDPE technology is useful for boat production. Due to the purpose, different configuration and equipment of the boat should be assumed. Keywords: motor boats, water rescue, polyethylene, technology, innovation

Resumen
Boat lift nets are one of the fishing gears in PPS Bungus, data from December 2021; 142 Bagan boat boats departed to carry out fishing operations with the number of fishermen boats 6 - 21 people and the weight of the ship 8-30 GT. In recent years, there have been several work accidents experienced by Bagan boat fishermen, such as falling while walking on the boat deck, fatigue, stepping on rotten wood, and broken hands. This study aims to determine the cases of work accidents that occurred in boat-bagan fishermen in the period January 2022 - January 2023, describe the activities carried out by boat-bagan fishermen, and determine the level of risk experienced by boat-bagan fishermen. This study uses a descriptive observational method with data analysis of probability concepts, JSA, and HIRA using the 2004 Australia and New Zealand standard risk control matrix. The results showed that the activities carried out in the operation preparation stage at PPS Bungus were mainly carried out by laborers (non-fishermen), work accidents in 7 operation activities were classified into five low-risk accidents and two moderate-risk and work accidents in the post-operation stage occurred 4 out of 7 activities which were classified into three common risk accidents and one medium risk.

Resumen
This essay examines the controversial stories and implications of two memorials built in March 2005 by former boat people from Vietnam on Pulau Bidong (Malaysia) and on Pulau Galang (Indonesia) to commemorate the refugee exodus that ensued after the end of the Vietnam War (April 1975). Tracing the histories and analyzing the contents of these objects, this essay not only illuminates the intertwining social, cultural, political, economic, moral, and spiritual dimensions of contemporary diasporic Vietnamese commemorative practices, but also explains how and why these commemorative practices are entangled in local, national, international, and transnational dynamics and therefore have multilateral impacts.

Resumen
The article presents the results of field and desk research of burials in boats left by the Narym (southern) Paleo-Selkup people (16th-17th centuries). It examines the burial structures, the form of the discovered boats, and details of burial and commemorative rituals. The study is based on the findings identified and studied by the author from mounds 13 and 13A of the Kustovsky burial ground, left by representatives of the locally-dialectal Shiyesgula group. Published data from paleoethnography and ethnography on similar rituals among other groups of Narym Paleo-Selkup people are used as comparative material. Burials were performed under small mounds in shallow pits, which were previously burned before the boats were placed in them as containers for the deceased in their entirety, without dismemberment. The boat bottoms were supported by beam supports, and the pits were covered with wooden planks. Carved boats of two types were used for burial: a pointed prow and a blunt-sterned dugout. The form of the prow corresponds to the ethnographically documented shamanic boat called“rontyk,” which is also a boat for guiding the dead to the aft erlife. The deceased were laid on their backs, with their heads in the stern and their feet downstream.”

Resumen
Abstract Crane-assisted launching and recovering of small boats from a large vessel is common in a wide range of operational scenarios and may be required during research missions or in emergency situations for rescue boats. As the mothership moves in natural irregular seas, the resulting accelerations and motions of the small boat can lead to dangerous situations, such as a collision between the mothership and the small boat or a slamming of the small boat onto the free water surface can occur, posing a great danger to the people involved. In the paper, the development of a coupled simulation method for the motions of the mothership and the small boat during the launching in the time-domain is described. The developed simulation method is based on the impulse response function. The implementation of the suspension on a crane is realised by a holonomic constraint and a Lagrange’s equation. The parameter influencing the launching operation include the current sea state, the stationary wave field induced by the motherships forward speed, at which the small boat is launched and the initial position of the small boat relative to the water surface. By varying the above mentioned parameters, the process can be optimised for different sea states in terms of forces and accelerations. In considering the forward speed of the mother boat during the launching process, it can be observed that in many cases the small boat is operated at high Froude numbers of greater than 0.4. This leads to an exceedance of the operational limits of the programmes used in this paper.

Resumen
This paper takes into account the methods of adaptations to the extreme situations of floods in the rainy season of 2020 in the rural and urban areas of Darbhanga district in northern Bihar, India. Boats made of different types of woods are the first choice of people. The region has a sprawling boat industry that provides a basis of livelihood to the wood smith community. Boats are generally made available to the needy people by the agencies of Government. However, those deprived of the boat facility adapt to the situation by carving makeshift devices made from banana pseudo stems, water hyacinth fronds, dry wood pieces, pitcher floats, bamboo rafts, cement bowls for feeding the livestock etc. High floods of 2020 witnessed people using boats of thermocol and rubber tubes on a large scale. All these devices, whether natural or man-made, work on the principle of Archimedes. The paper reports an innovative practice of using the hollow gas cylinders intricately strung in the fashion of an open boat that was used for about 15-20 days till the high floods receded in the village Harichanda of Hanuman Nagar C.D. Block of Darbhanga district India. The system was devised by local young men to tide over the crisis of ferrying people to local orchards for defecation and also for maintaining the supply chain of drinking water, cooking gas and other essential services. The plant items achieve buoyancy due to their density lower than water. Those made of flattened wood or tin plates achieve floatability on account of large volume of water that they displace. The weight of people carried on these boats is lighter than the weight of the volume of water displaced in the process.

Freer, Wendy. "Canal boat people, 1840-1970". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1991. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10946/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis seeks to examine the social and economic standing of the men, women and children who lived and worked on the canal boats of England and Wales during the decline of canal carrying between 1840 and 1970. Its main purpose is to analyse how and why this social group, with its peculiarly anachronistic way of life and work, survived until well into the second half of the twentieth century. It discusses the range of survival strategies open to the group ranging from family, through community, voluntary agencies and the state as providers of welfare, together with the relationship between these agencies. This has involved an investigation of kinship patterns among land-based and boat-based boat families and the relationship between boat people and the rest of society. Of particular concern has been the way in which the boat community emerged as a distinctive and cohesive social group based on occupation rather than class. It has not generally been appreciated that the decline of this industry was very long and, up until the First World War, quite gradual. Thus, opportunities for enterprise and remunerative employment continued for long after the appearance of the steam locomotive. At most times throughout the history of canal carrying, boatmen were able to earn money wages on a par with, or even in excess of those paid to manual workers in other old staple industries. This thesis also shows that the decision to live on board was a matter of regional custom and personal choice and not merely a result of straitened economic circumstances. Furthermore, it appears that the majority of those men who did take their families on board retained a house on land. Nevertheless, those who chose to live on board with their families did so at considerable social cost and thus it emerges that social deprivation and some forms of poverty are not merely a reflection of low pay.

Texto completo
Resumen
The central focus of my thesis is the symbolism of money and the power it holds in the Riau archipelago and Batam of Indonesia to affect the nature of social relationships. These social relationships in turn affect the different forms of exchange that take place in the archipelago. In particular, I am exploring the meaning and moral implications of monetary and commercial exchanges in contrast to exchanges of other kinds that take place between the Orang Suku Laut and other Malay and non-Malay communities. The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as the Orang asli Melayu (indigenous Malays) of Riau. Yet in the interaction between the Malays and Orang Suku Laut, there exists much fear between them with constant accusations of being poisoned and harmed by one and the other through practices of magic and witchcraft. This stems from the Malays' perception of the Orang Suku Laut as a "dangerous, dirty and unprogressive people. " The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as preferring a life of nomadism, and one without a religious orientation towards Islam, as opposed to a life of sedentism guided by the Islamic religion. This thesis explores how this self and other perceptions which have shaped the image of the Orang Suku Laut, have become enmeshed in the exchange economy of the Orang Suku Laut and the Malays.

Smit, Jack H. "The political origins and development of Australia’s people smuggling legislation: Evil smugglers or extreme rhetoric?" Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2011. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/419.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores the Australian State response to the voyage facilitators of maritime asylum seekers, commonly known as ‘people smugglers’. It does so by examining a number of Parliamentary debates and previously confidential Cabinet papers. Negative depictions of asylum seekers and their voyage facilitators as well as the prevailing political discourse is critically explored while Parliamentary debates are analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis. The research questions the ways Australian legislators justified the criminalisation of these voyage facilitators and investigates whether political elites were sufficiently informed about the circumstances of maritime asylum seeker journeys and the unique nature of their travel arrangements. The analysis is conducted within the container of established asylum seeker rights as formulated by the United Nations is its 1951 Refugee Convention. Within the Australian context these are framed as the “rights of unauthorised arrivals”. By examining de-classified Fraser government documents, the thesis presents evidence of the State’s intent to criminalise ‘people smugglers’ as part of a two-fold strategy, aiming to also punish maritime asylum seekers for arriving uninvited. This strategy was first proposed under the Fraser government soon after the first asylum seeker vessels arrived in Australia during the late 1970s. The research findings indicate that the increasingly harsh measures imposed by successive Australian governments targeting smugglers and passengers represents an increasingly punitive and continuous series of policy proposals and parliamentary discourse, where the voyage facilitators became the recipients of criminal labels such as “traffickers” and “smugglers” while 1980 legislative measures determined them to be serious criminals. The research also analyses legislative measures aiming to impose criminal sanctions implemented by the Howard government in 1999, and legislation that established a wide range of extended powers to Australian border officials in dealing with ‘unauthorised’ vessels entering Australian waters. Both legislative measures were responses to a number of undetected entries by vessels with Chinese migrants in the lead-up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. This section of the research explores the dominant “national security” narrative constructed by Australia’s conservative political elites in order to justify the legislation criminalising ‘people smugglers’. The research presents documented evidence that the Howard government withheld details of the Chinese arrivals from Parliament for ‘operational reasons’ and that the Immigration Department attempted to influence political debates by means of distributing a manipulative briefing document in the Parliament. Post-research participant interviews present evidence that Prime Minister John Howard’s Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock held the view that nobody has the right, neither by air nor by boat, to enter Australia to seek asylum. The research concludes that the legislative measures criminalising ‘people smugglers’ were not presented in order to fight transnational people trafficking but that they were instead presented and passed by the Parliament to ‘stop the boats’ and to further deter assisted asylum voyages into Australia by regarding such ventures as illegal without due regard for the UN Refugee Convention.

Resumen
AbstractBritain’s response to the ‘boat people’ crisis, as Becky Taylor shows in this chapter, had at its heart a contradiction. On the one hand, Margaret Thatcher’s government was keen to be seen as an ally of the US in the Cold War, and still a leader on the international stage. On the other, the arrival of 19,000 Vietnamese ‘boat people’ after 1979 came at a time of growing anti-immigration rhetoric, Britain’s deepest recession for fifty years and just as Thatcher’s New Right government’s marketisation and anti-statist policies were being enacted. This chapter explores how the tension between these different elements shaped Britain’s reception of the ‘boat people’, in particular pointing to the central place of voluntary organisations and multiculturalism in the resettlement programme.

Resumen
The market for superyachts has been growing at rates above 15% for several years (Beckett, 2007) and has represented a significant large powerboat market. One growth area in this market is vessels designed for group ownership, because as the individual cost of ownership decreases, people with less wealth are brought into the market. Since wealth follows a power curve, a five fold decrease in ownership cost represents far more than a five fold increase in potential owners. However, group ownership requires significant changes in the paradigm of use, design and management, including significantly more use in U.S. waters, meaning U.S. flagging and inspection becomes more advantageous (in part due to reduction in tax benefits of offshore flagging). Therefore group-owned U.S. flag superyachts potentially represent an opportunity for designers, management companies and builders, but have significant regulatory constraints on design and operation that have to be considered.

Using the experience gained from multi purpose icebreakers operating in the Beaufort Sea as well as from the Swedish icebreaker Oden it is possible to design and construct life boats that will be capable of traversing any first year ice in the ramming mode. Outward sloping frames in the water line all around the ship will guarantee the ship’s ability to survive ice pressure conditions. This paper describes an ice breaking life boat with a displacement of just over 200 tonnes with a propulsion power of about 1 MW with room for 250 people in a high state of safety. Detailed scantlings and weights are presented based on a hull form in its entirety built of flat plates. Design concepts to deal with burning oil on top of the water and icing conditions in a sea state during freezing conditions are presented in some detail.

Resumen
Most technical papers and reports on seakeeping tests for high speed vehicles skip over details of measurement and data processing for peak acceleration statistics. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the methods used to obtain the test results and that all facilities make the measurements the same way. In the past few years there has been renewed interest in this area and several papers have been written on the subject (Coats, et al. 2007, Riley, et al. 2010 (a-c), 2011, Grimsley, et al. 2010, McCue et al. 2012). It is an exciting time in this field but the relatively small group of people who make the measurements and perform the analysis sometimes speak in their own language. Engineers tend to specialize in one area or another – hydrodynamics, structures, electronics, computer programming – and it may be difficult for any one person to follow all of the analysis issues discussed without a general understanding of concepts in each area. The intent of this paper is to flesh out some of the details that are usually not reported regarding what goes on before the final analysis and to provide an overview of how peak acceleration values are obtained. The information presented could be considered overly basic by electronics or computer experts however it may be of use to naval architects who are not in the field of testing but have a vested interest in the outcome of acceleration measurements.

Resumen
In this paper a boat simulator is designed using parallel manipulators. The simulator allows the training of five or seven people in a river environment. Due to the high payload and high inertial forces, it was proposed to divide the simulator into various synchronized platforms. Additionally different configurations of mechanisms were evaluated as well as linear or rotational actuation. The dimensional synthesis was performed by introducing a power index based on the Virtual Work equations of motion, and applying Genetic Algorithms for optimization. This design process results in using two coordinated manipulators with rotational actuators. The first one has two degrees of freedom (pitch and roll); it will simulate the motion of the boat’s stern. The second one has three degrees of freedom: pitch, roll and heave; and simulates the motion of the boat’s bow. The detail design was concluded and the manipulators were built. A real time controller is under design nowdays and the integration of the fluid and the boat dynamics into the inverse dynamics analysis of the manipulators is proposed as future work.

Resumen
Since being introduced to North America at the Miami Boat Show in 2005, Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System, or IPS has established itself as a leading propulsion choice among pleasure boat owners and builders. Other suppliers are following suit including the Cummins Mercruiser Zeus system. Pod propulsion offers benefits like increased efficiency, better performance, nimble handling, and low noise levels while allowing more people to successfully operate their vessel due to a friendly operator interface. Features of these commercial pod systems that also benefit builders include ease of installation and the integral underwater exhaust which helps to meet CE requirements, for both exhaust and noise levels. Both IPS and Zeus are fully integrated pod propulsion systems. Existing vessels can be retro-fitted with these systems while many new vessels are being designed specifically for IPS or Zeus. Donald L. Blount and Associates provides consulting in regards to IPS integration with existing and new designs and has also been involved with designs employing the Zeus system. The first portion of this paper discusses pod drives, particularly IPS itself. (Because the author has substantially more experience and background with IPS, much of the information herein is IPS specific). General information on IPS and Zeus is offered as well as some operational specifics. The paper then focuses on the application of pod drives in existing and new vessel designs. The discussion includes how hull forms can be evaluated for use with pod drives. A look at the integration of pod systems into various types of pleasure boats (cruiser, day boat, fishing yacht, etc) is also covered including the challenges which exist for each specific vessel type.

Resumen
The design of a boat for the America's Cup has always been a challenging task for any naval architect. While in the past the success of the boat was mainly a question of sensibility and experience of the boat designer, lately the increasing technologies and economical means usually at the disposal of the syndicates provides great potential. Both experimental and theoretical tools require a specific technical knowledge of the matter, which leads to the involvement of many specialised people in different fields. For this reason a big managerial effort is required to organize and collect data and ideas coming from different fields. This paper summarises the first experience of the "II Moro di Venezia" syndicate in dealing with the design methodologies from the hydrodynamic point of view. While a great part of the collected data are still of confidential nature, here a brief history of the design work and some peculiar aspects regarding the use of tools like the towing tank, the wind tunnel, the CFD codes and the VPP are presented.

Resumen
The Great Salt Lake Exploration Platform is a creative machine built to foster visual and performative research within the vastly under explored situated locale of the Great Salt Lake. GLSEP is a modular, flexibly deployable craft for a small group of people to remain upon the lake for limited durations of time, make work, and not die. Given the remote severity of this landscape the qualifier is significant. Storms appear quickly and can generate ten to twelve foot waves in tight oscillation. Coupled with the water’schemical density the lake is known to literally tear boats apart. Rather than being built and powered as a boat, with need of a marina to launch and a geometry to accommodate overland travel, the GSLEP is a deployable assembly providing necessary life support and research infrastructure (shade, fresh water, food and waste storage, solar power, communications, and evacuation provisions) to researchers operating on the Great Salt Lake, akin to off planet missions with immanent dangers and very limited rescue opportunities.

Resumen
As Japan has increasingly becoming a so-called “super-aging society,” and the number of people with mobility impairment has increased, the barrier-free improvements have been implemented to public facilities so far. After the New Barrier-free Law has been enforced, however, the conceptual basis of such improvements has been shifting toward the universal design, based on the idea that everybody should be able to use facilities impartially. This study clarifies the present situation and problems of the barrier-free improvements from a passenger ship terminal to the inside of a ship, and elucidates improvement issues of nodal points of future marine and land transport. We carried out a questionnaire and site survey for the Hiroshima Port Ujina Passenger Boat Terminal, as well as the ships used, where the improvements are made based on the New Barrier-free Law.

Resumen
Problem statement During a public trial, over 150 passengers were interviewed about their thoughts and experiences using an autonomous ferry, among over 1500 passengers taking a trip on the world's first autonomous urban passenger ferry in Trondheim. One of the main issues expressed by passengers was a lack of information about the state of the unmanned ferry service. A safety attendant was aboard for the three-week public testing to take over control in the unlikely case of a hazardous event. Observations of passengers revealed a desire for information regarding the functionality of the ferry, the current state of the boat, and the progress of the current journey. Passengers interviewed stated that, especially if no safety personnel are on board, the demand for information is higher because no one can be queried. The absence of information increased the sense of insecurity. Since the space aboard the autonomous passenger ferry is limited, the used option cannot be too spacious; nonetheless, the information must be easily available to users. Research Question What information do passengers require on a self-driving urban passenger ferry? Does the type of information displayed affect passengers' perceptions of safety? Method Two 10-inch high-luminance (1000 nits) screens have been installed on the mast of the autonomous passenger ferry, allowing the user to see information on both sides when embarking, disembarking, and traveling. Two distinct information screen concepts have been visualized for use in a semi-structured interview. First, the passengers were asked what they could see on each of the concepts and what information they thought would be most useful. They should also explain how the information they view influences their sense of safety and trust. In an AB-test, passengers were asked to select a preferred concept for the information screen and describe why they chose that concept in detail. One of the concepts (A) was straightforward and depicted the journey's progress as a linear bar. Furthermore, the traveler could observe the ferry's status with a large illustration, along with the status in one word and a brief description. The second concept (B) should attract those passengers who are interested in details and technical elements. Concept B contained an environment map with the ferry's intended path and present position and heading, details for each single thruster, the speed in kn, system health status, battery levels, compass, object detection, and the ferry's current operation status. All used and previously stated characteristics on both presented screens have been used in a semi-open card sort to determine which information is most valuable to the passengers. The passengers were instructed to prioritize the offered information and fill in blank cards with missing information. Each of the placed cards was awarded points based on their location in the assortation; the further left the things were placed, the more points were awarded; the further right, the fewer points were awarded. Results 15 of the 1500 passengers who participated in the public trial of the urban autonomous passenger ferry were specifically asked about their preference for data visualization and the demand for information on such a ferry. The majority of the passengers (n = 12) indicated that they would prefer the simpler version of the information concept (A), whereas the remainder of the interviewed passengers would prefer the more technical interface because they are more concerned with the ferry's functionality and the reliability of the components. All of the users stated that they would feel less safe if there was no safety attendant or information screens on board. The cart sort analysis reveals that the more technical components have been ranked as less relevant, with the ferry's state, system health, and continuous travel progress being more important than detected objects, thruster details, LiDAR, and radar visualization. Conclusion Both the interview data and the card sort revealed that passengers on autonomous passenger ferries have a higher demand for straightforward and immediately available information. If they cannot obtain it from a human safety attendant on board, they require additional information that is not overly technical in order to maintain a high degree of safety perception.

Resumen
Oil exploration in the pre-salt, mainly in the SANTOS BASIN, has increased significantly and as results increasing the number of thousands of people commute to offshore platforms in Brazil is inevitable. The presence of a remote terminal, the so-called HUB, adjacent to the platforms, not only reduces the shipment costs, but also increases the speed of commuting. The present work addresses the feasibility of utilizing a ship shape hull as an alternative logistic HUB. The present work analyzes the hull as a rigid body receiving mostly transversal waves and operating as a floating breakwater in deep water with a central turret. The crew boat is a HSV, which will also be included in the investigation. As a continuation of the previous study of the author in 2015, the relative vertical motion between two bodies is analyzed in (four) different configurations and angles of incoming waves by the panel method code in frequency domain. Finally, having in mind operation limits and criterion, operation probabilities are evaluated. Four configurations are considered to be analyzed numerically on the relative vertical motion between two bodies in different Configurations and different angles of incoming waves by a panel method code for frequency domain. Finally, operation probabilities are studied according to the operation limits and criterion.

Resumen
Abundant gull populations in North America have led to a variety of conflicts with people. Gulls cause damage at aquaculture facilities and other properties, and often collide with aircraft. Their use of structures on and near water results in excessive amounts of bird droppings on boats and docks. Their presence near outdoor dining establishments, swimming beaches, and recreational sites can lead to negative interactions with people. Large amounts of gull fecal material pollutes water and beaches resulting in drinking water contamination and swim bans. A combination of dispersal techniques, exclusion and limited lethal control may reduce damage to an acceptable level. Gulls are classified as a migratory bird species and are protected by federal and, in most cases, state laws. In the United States, gulls may be taken only with a permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Occasionally, an additional permit is required from the state wildlife management agency.
