Introduction: Poor waste management led to mosquito breeding grounds. Previous research found that construction sites are the mosquito breeding area thus it’s important to understand how construction sites affect mosquito breeding. The breeding densities of migrant birds are subject to a wide range of influences that may cause their variation, within a site from one year to another, within years but among habitats and sites from one location to another, and also among species with different migration strategies in terms of travel distances and wintering habitats. First measuring, and then understanding, this variation and its drivers is a substantial challenge for breeding bird monitors and population ecologists. Variation in breeding bird densities in Grand Teton National Park have been monitored since the early 1990's,

The Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus has shown a remarkable breeding population increase and range expansion in Northern Europe during recent decades. The first breeding was reported in 1999, and in 2003 breeding was reported at a second site. From 2006 the number of breeding sites increased rapidly, and the species has now been reported breeding from a total of 20 sites. However, at least seven site

The food resource hypothesis of breeding habitat selection in beach-nesting birds suggests that birds breed at sites with more prey to meet the increased energetic requirements associated with breeding. We compare prey resources using pitfall traps and core samples at breeding sites and absence sites of the eastern population of hooded plover, Thinornis rubricollis rubricollis, which, in this part of its range, is a threatened obligate beach bird. Breeding sites had higher abundances, equivalent species richness, and different assemblages of invertebrate prey compared with absence sites. Assem

SummaryAn innovative approach to tree breeding called ‘breeding without breeding’ (BWB) is presented. The method, as applied on the material in hand, allows the capture of 75–85% of the genetic response to selection attained through conventional programmes without the need to do any controlled pollination and simplified or possibly no experimental field testing: both considered to be the most resource-demanding activities in breeding programmes. A pattern of abandonment and return to breeding sites was verified; around 30% of the sites were abandoned over a 10-year period, but the loss was largely compensated by establishment at new sites or return to sites used i

Abstract This chapter discusses the applications of CRISPR-mediated genome editing to improve the abiotic stress tolerance (such as drought, heat, waterlogging and cold tolerance) of maize. CRISPR/Cas9 has great potential for maize genome manipulation at desired sites. By using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing, numerous genes can be targeted to produce elite maize cultivars that minimize the challenges of abiotic stresses. In the future, more precise and accurate variants of the CRISPR/Cas9 toolbox are expected to be used for maize yield improvement.

Resumen
The data on black fly fauna in Moldova are absent in the old and modern literature. Overall, 45 black fly species from the genera Prosimulium (four species) and Simulium (41 species) are common both for Romania and Ukraine and expected to be present in Moldova. For the first time cross-sectional entomological survey was conducted in 2018 to detect the breeding sites of Simuliidae in Moldova. Productive breeding sites of black flies were identified in the creek close to the Dniester River section located in Vascauti village, Racovat River sections located in Branzeni and Burlanesti villages. The aim of the study was to study the adaptability of oats under the conditions of Yenisei Siberia by the total content of antioxidants (TCA) and to identify the relationship of one with the mass of 1000 grains. Five samples of spring oats grown in three different ecological sites located in the forest-steppe zone of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republic of Khakassia and Tuva were studied. To assess the adaptability of oat samples, a ranking method based on the level of these indicators was used. It was found that the variability of the TSA value in the grain of the samples was determined to

Resumen
Harlequin ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) are sea ducks that migrate inland each spring to nest along fast-flowing mountain streams. They are considered one of the most imperiled duck species in North America and occur in two distinct populations on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Pacific coast population includes Washington State, where harlequin ducks breed in the Olympic, Cascade, and Selkirk Mountains. This species is designated as a Management Priority Species by the National Park Service within North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA). This report summarizes harlequin d

Resumen
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (NHP) includes grassland habitats that are maintained for the interpretation of historic Civil War battles. In 2022, as part of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring program, the University of Delaware conducted a grassland bird and raptor inventory in the park. The goals of this inventory were to determine the grassland bird use of Harpers Ferry grasslands during Spring and Fall migration, estimate the abundance and daily nest survival for focal breeding species, and determine the raptor use during migration. We established and used multiple

Resumen
The value of national parks as bird habitat depends not only on local conditions within the parks, but also on the landscape habitat matrices in which they are located. However, the influences of local and landscape habitat matrices on birds vary by species and have not been quantified. Similarly, the trends of land cover types through time have not been systematically quantified for Midwest Region national parks and the landscapes around them, despite evidence of ongoing habitat loss exacerbated by climate change and human population growth. Managers and policy makers can use this information

The history of conflict between double-crested cormorants and human interest in fisheries is long and convoluted. Overall, double-crested cormorants are not major consumers of commercial and sportfish species. However, exceptions have been recorded at specific sites with documented impacts on local fisheries. Double-crested cormorants can have a significant impact on vegetation at breeding sites through normal nesting activities. Their guano is acidic and can change soil chemistry, killing ground vegetation and irreversibly damaging nest trees. Humans should avoid direct contact with excrement

Point Blue Conservation Science (hereafter Point Blue) conducted landbird monitoring from 16 August 2021 through 15 August 2023 in predominantly riparian habitat found in Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This monitoring was on behalf of the National Park Service?s (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program. Progress reports, like this one, are intended to document the survey efforts and to provide a basic summary of the data collected. This progress report deviates slightly from the structure of previous progress reports by summarizing two years of

Pinnacles National Park (?Pinnacles?) provides diverse habitats for numerous cliff-nesting raptors, including prairie falcons (Falco mexicanus) and peregrine falcons (F. peregrinus), as well as a spectacular array of summits and cliff-wall routes for rock-climbers. This monitoring program was established to determine long-term trends in the number of occupied territories and productivity of nesting prairie and peregrine falcons. The monitoring program grew out of a need to reduce potential disturbance that climbers and off-trail hikers may have on cliff-nesting raptors. The falcon monitoring p

High honeybee colony losses in the last decade have raised the scientific efforts to determine and mitigate the causes of declining honeybee health. Although honeybees are exposed to a variety of stressors, infestation by the ectoparasitic mite (Varroa destructor) and the viruses it vectors are considered to be the most significant biological problem of A. mellifera worldwide. Management of viral diseases is problematic and mainly focuses on control of Varroa. Current Varroa control suffers from the evolution mite resistance, negative effects on bees and bee products, and other inefficiencies

Resumen
Plant community monitoring at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield (NB) focused on the restored tallgrass prairie community. Six monitoring sites were visited four times and observations of plant species and ground cover were made. In addition to those observations, we included two environmental factors in this report—precipitation and recent fire history—to help understand the vegetation data status and trends. Precipitation data (standardized vegetation index) indicated drought conditions in 2012 and some dry periods in 2016. Although prairies are adapted to drought, we found that species ric
