In this paper, we study the singularly perturbed problem for the Schrödinger–Poisson equation with critical growth. When the perturbed coefficient is small, we establish the relationship between the number of solutions and the profiles of the coefficients. Furthermore, without any restriction on the perturbed coefficient, we obtain a different concentration phenomenon. Besides, we obtain an existence result.

The neuron is driven externally by the Poisson stream of intensity &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m01.gif" /&gt;. The influence of the feedback, which conveys every output impulse to the input with time delay &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m02.gif" /&gt;, on the statistics of BN's output spikes is considered. The resulting output stream is not Poissonian, and we look for its interspike intervals (ISI) distribution for the case of BN, BN with instantaneous, &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m03.gif" /&gt;, and delayed, &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m04.gif" /&gt;, feedback. For the BN with threshold 2 an exact mathematical expressions as functions of &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m05.gif" /&gt;, &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m06.gif" /&gt; and BN's internal memory, &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m07.gif" /&gt; are derived for the ISI distribution, output intensity and ISI coefficient of variation. For higher thresholds these quantities are found numerically. The distributions found for the case of instantaneous feedback include jumps and derivative discontinuities and differ essentially from those obtained for BN without feedback. Statistics of a neuron with delayed feedback has remarkable peculiarities as compared to the case of &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m08.gif" /&gt;. ISI distributions, found for delayed feedback, are characterized with jumps, derivative discontinuities and include singularity of Dirac's &lt;img src="http://www.igi-global.com/Images/Symbols/m09.gif" /&gt;-function type. The obtained ISI coefficient of variation is a unimodal function of input intensity, with the maximum value considerably bigger than unity. It is concluded that delayed feedback presence can radically alter neuronal output firing statistics.

The financial time series have a high frequency and the difference between their observations is not regular. Therefore, continuous models can be used instead of discrete-time series models. The purpose of this chapter is to define Lévy-driven continuous autoregressive moving average (CARMA) models and their applications. The CARMA model is an explicit solution to stochastic differential equations, and also, it is analogue to the discrete ARMA models. In order to form a basis for CARMA processes, the structures of discrete-time processes models are examined. Then stochastic differential equations, Lévy processes, compound Poisson processes, and variance gamma processes are defined. Finally, the parameter estimation of CARMA(2,1) is discussed as an example. The most common method for the parameter estimation of the CARMA process is the pseudo maximum likelihood estimation (PMLE) method by mapping the ARMA coefficients to the corresponding estimates of the CARMA coefficients. Furthermore, a simulation study and a real data application are given as examples.

This chapter aims at establishing engineering material properties of bovine hard tissue cut out of long bone. The study and design of implants, medical devices, and their bone material necessitate the knowledge of mechanical properties of bone to be evaluated. Braces or steel plates are used as fixation devices in animals who are treated for the fracture to bone or cracked bone. Braces or steel plates are fixed to the bone by rods and screws. For checking the stability of these inserted metallic parts, they have to be compatible with bone. The metal and bone form composite action for the load transfer mechanism. To ensure proper biomechanics and design of these inserts and accessories, we need to know the elastic properties of bone. This chapter establishes the modulus of elasticity, poisons ratio of Bovine femur bone. The experimental study establishes the orthotropic behavior of Bovidae femur bone. This experimental research provides comprehensive mechanical properties of Bovidae femur bone, through series of mechanical tests. By performing compression tests on a bone specimen, stress, strain, elastic modulus, poison’s ratio, and yielding point of bone are established. The bovine long bone exhibits orthotropic or transversely isotropic nature of femur bone as expected. The data presented here is for samples derived from goat and water buffalo. The solid mechanics approach using stiffness matrix is adopted to establish elastic constants. The data of elastic constants, compliance, and stiffness coefficients obtained can be used for finite element analysis to simulate stability of composite, femur bone, and metallic fixation. The values of compression strength, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and shear modulus are higher for water buffalo male than that of female showing gender difference. This may be attributed to lower bone density in females due to hormone secretion.

&lt;em&gt;Abstract.&lt;/em&gt;—From October 1997 to September 2000, we conducted a survey of shark nursery grounds in the northern Gulf of Mexico extending from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to Perdido Bay, Alabama. The objectives of the survey were to identify shark pupping/nursery grounds, determine their extent, and characterize the environmental conditions prevalent. Collections were made from March to October of each year with at least four sites sampled each month, two sites in Mississippi waters and two sites in Alabama waters. Collections were made using a gill net fished from 1500 until 2200 hours each day. A total of 100 collections were made during the study, resulting in the capture of more than 2,200 sharks. Young-of-the-year and juvenile sharks were collected from many areas in the Mississippi Sound with many sharks taken around Cat, Ship, Horn, Petit Bois, Round, and Dauphin islands. Shark populations along the Mississippi and Alabama gulf coasts are dominated by three species, the Atlantic sharpnose shark &lt;em&gt;Rhizoprionodon terraenovae&lt;/em&gt;, the blacktip shark &lt;em&gt;Carcharhinus limbatus&lt;/em&gt;, and the finetooth shark &lt;em&gt;C. isodon. &lt;/em&gt;Other species captured included the bull shark &lt;em&gt;C. leucas&lt;/em&gt;, the scalloped hammerhead &lt;em&gt;Sphyrna lewini&lt;/em&gt;, the bonnethead &lt;em&gt;S. tiburo&lt;/em&gt;, the spinner shark &lt;em&gt;C. brevipinna, &lt;/em&gt;the blacknose shark &lt;em&gt;C. acronotus&lt;/em&gt;, and the sandbar shark &lt;em&gt;C. plumbeus&lt;/em&gt;. We used analysis of variance to compare the environmental factors present at sites where sharks were present with those at sites where sharks were not present and found significant differences in surface and bottom dissolved oxygen when Atlantic sharpnose sharks were present, surface and bottom temperature and surface dissolved oxygen when finetooth sharks were present, and surface and bottom temperature when blacktip sharks were present. We used unweighted poisson regression to examine the effect of environmental factors on catch per unit effort (CPUE) (sharks 100 m net&lt;sup&gt;–1&lt;/sup&gt; h&lt;sup&gt;–1&lt;/sup&gt;) and found that surface salinity significantly altered catch of Atlantic sharpnose sharks, surface and bottom temperature and surface dissolved oxygen significantly altered finetooth shark CPUE, and both surface and bottom temperature and dissolved oxygen altered blacktip shark CPUE. To consider interspecific interactions between the three dominant species, we used the Yule coefficient of association and found that young of the year of the three most common species were significantly, positively associated. Future studies of shark abundance and distribution should consider the interactions between co-occurring species. The Mississippi Sound, associated barrier islands, and the lower reaches of the Mobile Bay are important nursery grounds for several shark species, particularly blacktip, Atlantic sharpnose, and finetooth sharks.

In this chapter the constitutive equations for linear elasticity in which the free energy is a quadratic function, and the stress a linear function, of the small strain tensor are introduced. In general, the fourth-order linear elasticity tensor which relates the stress to the strain has twenty-one independent elastic constants. Most solids, however, exhibit some symmetry, the effect of which is to reduce the number of elastic constants. Forms of the linear elasticity tensor for some anisotropic materials, as well as the widely-used forms for an isotropic material, which has only two independent elastic constants, are discussed. The engineering elastic moduli known as the shear modulus and the bulk modulus, as well as the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio for isotropic linear elastic materials are introduced. Considerations of temperature changes necessitate the introduction of another tensorial material property called the thermal expansion tensor, which for an isotropic material reduces to a scalar coefficient of thermal expansion.
