Resumen
Material samples form an important portion of the data infrastructure for many disciplines. Here, a material sample is a physical object, representative of some physical thing, on which observations can be made. Material samples may be collected for one project initially, but can also be valuable resources for other studies in other disciplines. Collecting and curating material samples can be a costly process. Integrating institutionally managed sample collections, along with those sitting in individual offices or labs, is necessary to faciliate large-scale evidence-based scientific research.

The Genomic Resources Collection is a separate, independently managed part of the natural history collections of the Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus specifically intended for consumptive research. The GRC policy deals with the materials that are archived for the very purpose of enabling the study of biological diversity at the genome level, DNA extractions of animal, fungal and plant specimens, and animal tissue samples stored deep-frozen for purposes of future DNA extraction. The GRC policy defines the purpose of the collections, the objectives and content of the procedures and activ

In this paper, we review existing classification techniques and suggest an entirely new procedure for the classification of high-dimensional vectors on the basis of a few training samples. The proposed method is based on the Bayesian paradigm and provides posterior probabilities that a new vector belongs to each of the classes, therefore it adapts naturally to any number of classes. Our classification technique is based on a small vector which is related to the projection of the observation onto the space spanned by the training samples. This is achieved by employing matrix-variate distributio

Abstract Microbiological monitoring of samples collected from oilfield operations is crucial for understanding microbial impacts on metal infrastructure. As many oilfields and related infrastructure are in remote locations, the time between sample collection, shipping to laboratory and sample processing for microbiological analysis can vary from days to weeks. Hence, robust sample handling and preservation methodology to arrest microbiological activity at the time of sample collection is needed. Current methods using portable analysers are often insufficient for precise determination, highlighting the need for gas chromatography in controlled laboratory settings. Abstract Crude oil transmission pipelines are treated with chemicals to mitigate microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Often such corrosion occurs at over and under bends in pipelines due to the flow regimes that allow the suspended particulate in the crude to settle. The resulting sludge, typically composed of oil, water, and sand, can be microbiologically active. For testing, sludge is collected from the nose of a cleaning pig, but the locations of sample collection are frequently remote. As such, onsite testing of the sludge can be impractical, thus samples usually travel long dista

Resumen
Pipeline liquid and solid samples collected as a part of internal corrosion monitoring and other assessment activities are vulnerable to compositional changes resulting from sample handling procedures. These compositional changes can affect subsequent test results and the usefulness/accuracy of the data. Understanding the changes that occur due to sampling variables will help operators identify the significance of these changes to the test results. A set of experiments performed in this study were able to demonstrate some effects of sample holding time, sample holding temperature, and sample c

Resumen
Every Member State is required to monitor and report levels of nitrate in specified foodstuffs as part of the European Commission regulation and the UK also requires this information as part of the collection of data to support the review of retained EU law in the UK and inform the setting of policy around maximum nitrate levels. The requirement to carry out monitoring for nitrate in lettuce, spinach and rocket is being met by the UK Nitrate Surveillance Programme. Results are presented for the period between 1st April 2021 and 31st March 2022. A total of 202 samples were collected within the
