This article discusses the English translations of twelve of Grimms’ fairy tales included in the hitherto forgotten edition published by Darton and Co. in 1851. The titles and tales are identified with their German originals, and the defects of the translation are examined. The German base text was one of the Grimm editions published between 1837 and 1850. Other items not by the Grimms in the edition are commented on. Identification of the tale entitled ‘Sycorine and Argilas’ is unknown. The anonymous translator was inexperienced, without access to a reliable dictionary, and was, probably, female.

The contribution of an Ethiopian printed edition of the hagiographic dossier is discussed, and a repertory of lexical and narrative issues arising from the text is dealt with and commented.

Abstract In the following article, the authors present a critical edition of ms. T-S H 10.175. This manuscript is written in a medieval Oriental hand and contains continuous, lemmatic piyyut commentary. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the only such manuscript to be found in the Genizah. All of the piyyutim commented on in the manuscript (to the extent that these are identifiable) were composed by the Classical payyetan Eleazar be-rabbi Qillir. In the edition, the commentary text is transcribed and punctuated, lemmas are marked as such, and the piyyutim that are commented on are identified, along with the biblical and midrashic sources that the commentary employs. The commentary text is analyzed, with special stress on the hermeneutic technique that informs its composition. Together with this analysis, the authors provide an overview of the evidence for piyyut commentary that may be gleaned from the Genizah manuscripts.

‘This contract is certainly my greatest success as a composer, so far’, commented Bartók in 1918 on contracting with the Viennese publisher Universal Edition. After years of hit-and-miss publishing with two Budapest firms, Rozsnyai and Rózsavölgyi, Bartók was proud at having caught, with the 1917 Budapest première of his ballet The Wooden Prince, the attention of Universal Edition's director, Emil Hertzka. Hertzka was renowned for his cultivation of such musical talents of central Europe as Mahler, Schoenberg, Janáœk, Berg and Szymanowski. Until about 1926, when Hertzka developed heart troubles and took a lesser role in managing the firm, Bartók was generally happy with his Viennese publishing connexion. Universal Edition had quickly moved to bring out the considerable backlog of his compositions, had strongly promoted his works through its new house journal Muskiblätter des Anbruch, and had often spurred his imagination with complimentary scores, suggestions and in-house gossip. But then, from 1926 to 1932, when Hertzka died, Bartók's dealings with Universal Edition became progressively less personal, less prompt and sometimes even chilly, although his compositions did continue to appear regularly from the publisher and to receive a quite reasonable level of exposure. Thereafter, as the Depression and financial difficulties led to more serious publication delays and breakdowns in communication, Bartók grew bitter and imperious. Several times after 1932 he threatened to terminate his contract with Universal Edition.

Resumen
Works belonging to the world literary canon are widely commented on by literary scholars. The editorial aspects of the editions of the same works, however, do not have such thorough studies. The discussion of the editorial features of children’s publications seems to be all the more important because improperly selected typographic parameters may significantly impair the quality of the reading experience and discourage reading itself. The article indicates the importance of particular architectural elements of the Polish editions of two masterpieces of children’s literature, “Winnie the Pooh” and “Alice in Wonderland”, which appeared in Poland after 1989. The indication of specific typographical sizes and layouts of illustrations makes it possible to determine reading competences which should be possessed by a reader designed by the publisher, and thus also to prove whether a particular edition has been given an appropriate editorial design for the recipient.

What in 1897 Ernst Weber first called ‘Dissoi Logoi’ is an untitled work written by an anonymous author in a peculiar kind of Doric dialect and which was handed down at the end of a few manuscripts of Sextus Empiricus. Since Thomas Robinson’s authoritative edition in 1979, most scholars have regarded Dissoi Logoi as a collection of lecture notes by a sophist lived between the 5th and 4th century BCE. In this thesis, articulated in five chapters, I will analyse and, where necessary, rethink the standard view about the most salient historical, philological and philosophical matters concerning Dissoi Logoi. After briefing the reader on the theoretical and methodological framework of my research (Preface), I will devote the first chapter (Introduction) to the transmission, language, literary influences, date, place, and nature of the work. In the second chapter (Critical Text and Translation), I will offer my critical Greek text of Dissoi Logoi and a parallel English translation of it. In the third chapter (Commentary), I will closely analyse the most relevant lemmas, from a linguistic, rhetorical and philosophical viewpoint. In the fourth chapter (The Author’s Message), firstly, I will investigate the work as a whole, thus tackling the highly debated problem of its unity; then, I will draw an overall outline of the author’s sophistic thought; finally, I will assess the possible theoretical connections between this work and the later Pyrrhonean tradition. At the end of this journey, I will summarize the various conclusions which I have reached throughout the thesis and which delineate a new portrait of Dissoi Logoi, alternative to that of the standard view (Conclusion).

This thesis presents a new Latin text of the Prolegomena and accompanying prefatory material of the Cologne 1642 edition of the Virgil commentary by the Spanish Jesuit scholar Juan Luis De La Cerda. It provides an original English translation of this material along with explanatory notes which focus upon the social, educational, intellectual and political influences that informed La Cerda's work. The notes also take account of some of the rhetorical and stylistic aspects of La Cerda's work. An introduction situates the work in its cultural and intellectual context and provides a clear overview of the structure and composition of the Prolegomena.

Jarry semble avoir totalement abandonné les complications stylistiques qui caractérisaient ses premiers textes lorsqu’il fait œuvre de critique littéraire à la Revue blanche. En réalité, l’auteur de Messaline continue, mais de façon extrêmement sous-jacente, à pratiquer une forme d’obscurité, elle paradoxale, dans le sens où elle est inapparente, et qui se traduit par le développement constant d’une esthétique du raccourci et par un apparent retrait de sa présence de critique jusque dans l’acte même du compte rendu, Jarry donnant toute sa place au texte commente, en taisant cette façon qu’il a, incessamment, de le citer. Ainsi, ce travail est conduit d’une part par notre souci de faire affleurer la façon dont se fait jour l’esthétique du raccourci (Jarry procède par synthèses incessantes qui, à force d’affirmation, en deviennent soit obscures soit insaisissables) au sein de ces textes apparemment alimentaires que sont les critiques littéraires de Jarry, l’auteur du Surmâle présentant de véritables concrétions de sens, en lien avec la notion d’érudition, dans des domaines extrêmement divers. D’autre part, notre travail vise à montrer comment se fait jour chez Jarry le détournement de l’usage habituel de la citation, qui porte en creux une critique corrosive du statut de critique, l’auteur de la chandelle verte devenant un critique qui ne s’exprime le plus souvent que suivant l’absence totale de propos critique – puisque lorsqu’il s’agit d’énoncer des « jugements », c’est en fait pour continuer de tisser une filiation avec une communauté d’auteurs desquels il se sent proche et ainsi, principalement, avec le lieu du Mercure de France
Jarry seems to have completely abandoned the learned syntaxic and lexical complications which characterized his first texts when he worked as a literary critic in la revue blanche. in fact, the author of messaline keeps exerting, but in an extremely underlying way, a kind of obscurity. that obscurity is paradoxical, in the sense that it is not apparent and that it ultimately results in the abiding development of an aesthetic of the abridged, and in an apparent setting back of his presence of critic, even in the very act of making reports. jarry gives all the importance to the commented text, hushing up the way he has to quote it, incessantly. thus, this work is led, on the one hand, by our concern of revealing the way the aesthetic of the abridged appears – jarry proceeds by ceaseless syntheses, which, by dint of being asserted, become either obscure or elusive – in those litterary criticisms which seem to be bread and butter work, because the author of le surmâle presents in them real concretions of sense, in connection with the notion of erudition, in extremely diverse fields. on the other hand, our work aims at showing how jarry diverts the usual use of the quotation – that carries a corrosive criticism of the status of critic – the author of la chandelle verte becoming a critic who expresses himself mostly according to the total absence of critical words, because when it is a question of expressing "judgments", this is in fact to continue to weave a filiation with an authors' community of which he feels close to, and thus, mainly, with the place of le mercure de france

Entre 1947 et 1964, Maurice Thorez, secrétaire général du Parti communiste français, assiste à 381 réunions du Bureau politique et prend des notes pendant la plupart d'entre elles. Présentant une édition critique des notes de cinq années cruciales pour le PCF, ce travail définit le rôle du Bureau politique comme groupe dirigeant dans le processus décisionnel au sein du parti communiste français. Il s'est agi de montrer comment, en s'appuyant sur les notes de Maurice Thorez et en les mettant en relation avec les autres sources disponibles, le Bureau politique joue le rôle de médiateur à la direction du PCF. Composé de dirigeants sélectionnés selon des critères précis spécifiques à une organisation communiste, loyaux envers l'URSS et leur secrétaire général, il se réunit au moins une fois chaque semaine pour traiter principalement de l'actualité politique, intérieure comme extérieure, mais aussi du mouvement communiste international, ainsi que des sujets de prédilection du parti communiste: mouvement de la paix, luttes syndicales et catégories sociales par exemple. Même si, souvent, la ligne est tracée par l'URSS, Maurice Thorez se charge de l'adapter au cadre national et il a besoin, pour ce faire, du Bureau politique. Celui-ci nourrit et enrichit sa réflexion, lui sert de vecteur de transmission. Between 1947 and 1964, Maurice Thorez, general secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), attended 381 meetings of the Politburo and took notes during most of them. This work reports commented notes of five crucial years for the PCF and defines the role of the Politburo as the directing organ in the decision-making process of the PCF. Relying on Maurice Thorez' notes and relating them to other available sources, the purpose was to demonstrate how the Politburo played a mediation role at the direction of the party. Composed of leaders selected on precise criteria, specific to communist organizations, faithful to the USSR and to their general secretary, the Politburo used to meet at least once a week for talking mainly about the political context - national and international, but also for discussing the international communist movement and brother parties, as well as favourite subjects of the communist party, i.e. the movement for peace, union struggles or social classes for instance. Even if the guidelines were often drawn by the USSR, Maurice Thorez used 10 adapt them to the French context, with the help of the Politburo. The latter fed and enriched the general secretary's thoughts and acted as a transmission vehicle. It was an essential intermediary between the general secretary, representing the international communist movement, and the grassroots represented by the Central Committee

Oderigo di credi, a florentine goldsmith, wrote this manuscript between 1406 and 1430. The first part consists in a complete record of the numerous suits brought against him by a relative and the communal and religious authorities about an inheritance. The second part is a journal concerning the estate he thus acquired in the florentine countryside and leased to sharecroppers. The edition includes the integral transcription of the manuscript and a commentary on the author's life, the originality of his book of "ricordanze" and the day-to-day relationships between the peasants and their landlord from the city

Edition critique substantielle devenue édition commentée du Journal dirigé, manuscrit tombe dans le domaine public en 1980, édité pour la première fois en 1982. Il appartient a l'ensemble des "manuscrits de la malette", redige de 1939 a 1946, se présente comme le tout dernier roman de Bousquet mais plus marque que les précédents par l'autobiographie. L'étude préalable puis l'édition des autres manuscrits de la mallette a permis le travail d'édition critique du Journal dirigé en amenant a situer plus justement sa place dans l'œuvre créatrice & théorique de Bousquet et dans le contexte historique de sa production: pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, a la charnière entre l'œuvre romanesque qui s'achève en 1938, l'œuvre diariste qui commence en 1939, parallèlement à une œuvre poétique mince mais très ramifiée et a une réflexion critique sur la littérature et l'art qui sort de sa latence en 1938 et passe au premier plan a partir de la lecture des fleurs de Tarbes. Cette perspective a conduit a intégrer a cette édition critique une insistante attention a l'œuvre épistolaire: lettres a Paulhan, Dubuffet et Bellmer cette édition commentée corrige les erreurs d'établissement de texte de celle de 1982, de datation, d'interprétation, les affine et propose une appréhension plus juste du texte principal et des textes satellites. This is a substantial critical edition transformed into an annotated edition of the Journal dirigé. The manuscript made publicly available in 1980, is one of several related texts known as "case manuscripts". Composed between 1939 & 1946 it appears at first to be the very last novel by Bousquet but in which the autobiographical tenor seems even more pronounced than in the earlier novels. An initial editing & critical appreciation of the other manuscripts from the case enabled study & annotated edition of this one, a more accurate determination of the place the Journal dirigé occupies in the creative & theoretical work of Bousquet as well as in the historical context in which it was composed: during the IInd. World war, just between the novels cycle completed in 1939 and the diaries cycle initiated in 1938 & at the same time as the poetical work small yet remarkably complex, & critical reflexions about literature & art which became proeminent following publication and reading of les fleurs de Tarbes. The perspective which thus emerged let me to study Bousquet's corres pondence with Paulhan, Dubuffet & Bellmer. The annotated edition has attempted to correct numerous errors concerned with text establishment, dating & interpretating in the first edition & to present a more accurate & refine rendering of the text whilst at the same time suggesting a more precise understanding of the main text of the Journal dirigé and ancillary text. This enables us to define be role, place & sequence of the "case manuscripts" as a whole, the most subtle & purposely posthumous part of which is the Journal dirigé, & through the latter, the key-elements of the bousquetian creation; lastly it is possible to establish the nature & fiction of the interplay of the accessible & the recondite, directed by the choice of romanesque fiction which proves both illusory & derisive

Esta dissertação de mestrado teve como objetivo principal editar 31 obras ainda não publicadas da compositora Adelaide Pereira da Silva e produzir um catálogo comentado dessas obras. Tal trabalho justifica-se considerando se tratar de uma compositora do sexo feminino, em plena atividade, defensora e incentivadora do folclore musical brasileiro e de nossas raízes, que ao longo da sua vida assumiu cargos relevantes nesta área e possui larga experiência como professora de música em escolas e universidades de São Paulo. Para cumprir o objetivo, além da edição das obras, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico para conceituar e apresentar as funções direcionadas à edição de obras musicais e referendar o trabalho das mulheres nas diversas subáreas da música. Também foram efetuadas algumas entrevistas e colhidos depoimentos orais da compositora para serem incluídos no catálogo comentado das obras, além da coleta de documentos que descrevem parte da sua trajetória musical (fotos, programas de concerto, premiações, entre outros), reunidos como anexo a este trabalho. As partituras foram editadas através do software FINALE 2012 e registradas na Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (Biblioteca Nacional do Brasil). O trabalho consiste em um capítulo com um sucinto relato do trabalho musical realizado pelas mulheres brasileiras, outro descrevendo parte da trajetória da compositora e um terceiro voltado à edição de partituras. Segue-se a eles o catálogo comentado contendo, além das partituras organizadas segundo critério de instrumentação, um resumo que descreve parte deste arquivo de forma sistemática e cuja função é orientar a consulta e determinar quais são os documentos pertencentes a este instrumento de pesquisa.
The main objective of this dissertation was to edit 31 still unpublished works of the composer Adelaide Pereira da Silva, and to produce a commented catalog of these works. This work is relevant because she is a female composer in full activity, a defender and promoter of Brazilian musical folklore and its roots and who, throughout her life, has taken important positions in this area, with wide experience as a music teacher in schools and universities in São Paulo. To accomplish such objective, besides the editing of the sheet music, a bibliographical research was performed in order to conceptualize and present the functions related to the edition of musical works and to document women's work in the several subareas of music. Some interviews and oral testimonies by the composer are to be included in the commented catalog of the works, as well as the collected documents that describe part of her musical trajectory (photos, concert programs, awards, among others), which appear as annexes to this work. Sheet music was edited through FINALE 2012 software and registered at National Library Foundation (National Library of Brazil). The paper includes a chapter presenting a concise history of the musical work of Brazilian women composers, followed by a chapter partially describing the trajectory of Adelaide Pereira da Silva, and a third one, dedicated to the edition of sheet music. The commented catalog contains the sheet music, organized according to the criteria of instrumentation; a summary, intended to describe part of this file in a systematic way and whose function is to guide the consultation and determine which are the documents belonging to this research instrument.

Written in the second half of the first century B. C. , Book XX of Diodorus Siculus relates the events of the years 310 to 302 B. C. All districts of the Mediterranean world are concerned. In the Western Mediterranean, Diodorus relates the military expedition of Syracuse tyrant Agathokles against Carthago, and his subsequent fights against the rival cities of Sicily. In the Eastern Mediterranean, Diodorus writes about the difficulties of the Diadochoi in dividing Alexander's Empire, and particularly about Antigonos Monophtalmos' attempt at unification, with the help of his son Demetrios Poliorcetes. Antigonos' will to hegemony appears in his expeditions against Cyprus (307 B. C. ), Egypt (306 B. C. ), Rhodes (305 B. C. ) and Greece (304 to 302 B. C. ). In Italy, Diodorus refers briefly to the differents steps of the Roman expansion. The Greek text is given in a new edition with critical apparatus, French translation and a commentary explaining the structure of the text, giving geographical and technical informations and presenting historical complements and synthesises. The text is also accompanied with an introduction presenting the main characteristics of the book. The volume contains the commented edition of the Devisement dou monde based on the Berlin Staatsbibliothek - Preußischer Kulturbesitz Codex, Hamilton 424. The Hamilton 424 Codex, transcribed in Venice in the second half of the fifteenth century, contains the translation of a Latin model (whose features can be partially reconstructed virtually starting from some translation errors) and is the only known witness of V. Due to its characteristics, V represents a crucial point in the definition of the transmission dynamics of Polo’s book: its readings are confirmed, often in a broader form, by the Latin version known as Z. V strengthens the hypothesis that, after returning to Venice, Marco Polo modified the text written with Rustichello da Pisa in Genoa. Actually, version V represents the first step of this long process of rewriting, which probably occurred in several phases. This volume includes an introduction, the text edition, a textual commentary, as well as an index. A second and forthcoming volume will contain the linguistic analysis and glossary.

The book advises on the structuring, formation, and operation of a range of asset classes, including hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate funds, and other non-retail collective investment vehicles. This edition has been revised to reflect the numerous and significant developments in financial services regulation on both sides of the Atlantic since the publication of the second edition. More elements of the Dodd Frank financial regulatory reforms, which increased the scope and reach of regulation applicable to private funds, have been implemented and commented on in this edition. This chapter explores the critical edition of hybrid materials: heterogeneous documents, facsimiles, pictures, sounds, and videos. Through concise examples, it illustrates how and why different collections, although “critical,” do not attain the usual ambitions of critical editions (Greek authors, the Bible, canonical authors) but address another conception of “critical” and “edition.” The chapter examines the implications of critical projects when reconstructions of the given texts' original states are of lesser or peripheral interest. The term “critical” is used mainly to connote the construction of a context amplified through comments, intersecting links, and thematic indexation.

Maria Maurer examines the career of Diana Mantuana (c. 1547–1612), the first female printmaker to sign her work and one of the few female artists mentioned by Vasari in the second edition of his Lives (1568). Recognizing that printmaking was an unusual female occupation due to its technique and wide circulation, Maurer argues that Diana entered into visual dialogue with Mantuan and papal court artists to promote her work. Focusing on two prints made after the work of Giulio Romano, Maurer reveals that, through her work in a reproductive medium, the artist commented upon the ability of women and printmaking to both copy and generate, engaging broader discourses regarding imitation and invention to market herself as a rare commodity.

This review of L. Håkanson’s Teubner edition of the Elder Seneca (1989) appeared in 1991 after the regrettably early death of the editor, to whom the reviewer pays tribute as a scholar ‘whose name deserves to stand alongside those of the most illustrious critics of Latin prose and poetic texts’. The text of the Elder Seneca is deeply corrupt, and Håkanson made innumerable conjectures on it. The reviewer naturally could not comment on them all; instead he restricted himself to discussion of a sample, Suasoria 7, a short piece in which the editor made as many as eighty-five changes to the transmitted text. The reviewer comments on the richness of the apparatus criticus, but he felt the lack of a companion commentary volume (Håkanson’s commentary on the first book of the Controversiae has now been published).

The main activities of the RCC-M Subcommittee have been in achieving and demonstrating conformity of the code with French regulation and making comparisons with other codes and standards. The paper highlights how industrial experience is being integrated into the RCC-M code and how conformity with the essential safety requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive has been demonstrated. Abstract This paper covers the general approach followed by AFCEN, the French Society for Design, Construction and In-Service Inspection Rules for Nuclear Island Components in updating the nuclear code RCC-M, from the technical and organizational points of view. The main evolutions introduced in recent editions of RCC-M code are presented and commented on, with a focus on the 2018 edition of the code, which marks the end of the 3-year program carried out to demonstrate the conformity with European essential safety requirements for pressure equipment and French requirements for nuclear pressure equipment. In addition, the main on-going activities are presented, as well as the future activities of the RCC-M subcommittee, in the frame of the 4-year editorial program that has been launched in 2019, in line with the AFCEN 4-year strategic plan. They encompass all fields covered by the code: design and analysis rules, material procurement, fabrication and nondestructive testing. The paper highlights how the industrial experience is integrated into the RCC-M code, and also how the new projects needs are taken into account.

A digital music edition that follows the principles implemented in the fully-digital, MEI-coded Digital Interactive Mozart Edition, pursued by the Mozarteum Foundation and the Packard Humanities Institute, has many advantages over conventional analog editions. One advantage is greater transparency, which is achieved not only at the level of the material, e. g. the inclusion of digital images of the sources, but above all by making editorial processes and decisions visible in the edition itself. In the digital edition, the Critical Report, a defining component of any critical edition and often physically separate from the edited musical text, becomes part of the overall digital code. The philological findings and editorial processes reported encompass the entire range of forms of expression, from verbal comments and annotations to pure code and non-verbal, largely visual communication strategies. Therefore, the format of the traditional printed Critical Report, which is mainly made up of text and tables, dissolves and is replaced by an immaterial, non-delimitable field of data, information, references and media for which the term Critical Documentation is more appropriate.

This paper deals with the complete design and implementation of a small unmanned air vehicle (UAV) in the framework of a project course for engineers. This project takes place within an international contest organised by the french defence and aerospace agency. The objective is to design an autonomous air vehicle that will be able to be operated by soldiers on the battlefield, with embedded sensors and camera, which will be able to explore an urban environment, and detect targets or threads such as snipers. Our team won the first edition of the contest two year ago and is again selected with eleven other teams to take part in the new challenge next year. Our way of running this project is quite unusual on the education point of view for several reasons. In the challenging scientific area of aerospace engineering, an entire vehicle (mechanical parts as well as electronic parts) is designed, manufactured, tested and operated by students, thus involving a lot of students of different background. For instance, mechatronics students are coordinating the project, helped by students in mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics, composite structures, manufacturing, topography, physics and electronics. The main challenge is to coordinate large groups of students of different faculties and different levels, as there are more than 40 students working on the same project at the same time. The group of students studying mechatronics is currently working on this project since September 2006 and will go on until they graduate in june 2009. The aerodynamics structure is an elliptic wing within a 70 cm diameter sphere. The UAV should take of and land vertically and then fly horizontally. This challenging transition between vertical and horizontal flight is currently under study and has been carried out successfully by another team operating a more classical airplane. Moreover, the project organisation and design process is currently analysed and deals as a case study for researchers in the area of engineering design. This is also interesting as it is generally not possible to analyse the entire design process in an industrial environment. The technical aspects of the project as well as the project organisation, collaborative design tools and project management tools will be presented. The success and failures of the project organisation will be explained and the analysis from problem base learning point of view commented.

Resumen
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
