Resumen
Many problems in science and engineering are solved through experimental investigations. Because experiments can be costly and time consuming, it is important to efficiently design the experiment so that maximum information about the problem can be obtained. It is also important to devise efficient statistical methods to analyze the experimental data so that none of the information is lost. This thesis makes contributions on several aspects in the field of design and analysis of experiments. It consists of two parts. The first part focuses on physical experiments, and the second part on comput

Modern engineering design tends to use computer simulations such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to replace physical experiments when evaluating a quality response, e.g., the stress level in a phone packaging process. The use of computer models has certain advantages over running physical experiments, such as being cost effective, easy to try out different design alternatives, and having greater impact on product design. However, due to the complexity of FEA codes, it could be computationally expensive to calculate the quality response function over a large number of combinations of design

The use of computer modeling is fast increasing in almost every scientific, engineering and business arena. This dissertation investigates some challenging issues in design, modeling and analysis of computer experiments, which will consist of four major parts. In the first part, a new approach is developed to combine data from approximate and detailed simulations to build a surrogate model based on some stochastic models. In the second part, we propose some Bayesian hierarchical Gaussian process models to integrate data from different types of experiments. The third part concerns the developm

Mathematical models are commonly used in science and industry to simulate complex physical processes. These models are implemented by computer codes which are often complex. For this reason, the codes are also expensive in terms of computation time, and this limits the number of simulations in an experiment. The codes are also deterministic, which means that output from a code has no measurement error. <br /><br /> One modelling approach in dealing with deterministic output from computer experiments is to assume that the output is composed of a drift component and systematic

Computer experiments facilitate, through mathematical modelling, various experiments that would otherwise be very difficult to perform, or even impossible. Computer experiments are employed to emulate situations in areas such as weather modelling, astrophysics, economics and many more. In conducting a computer experiment, we are required to select a design for the initial values x⁽¹⁾, . . . , x(n) of a process, and then emulate the output based on the process and the initial values. The quality of the emulator therefore depends partly on the process and partly on the choice of initial values.

Resumen
In this thesis we present a methodology for validating Gaussian process models: Gaussian process emulators and simulator discrepancy models. A Gaussian process emulator is a representation of our beliefs about a mathematical model implemented in a computer program known as a simulator. By ``simulator discrepancy'', we mean the difference between a simulator's output and the corresponding physical process. We present a set of diagnostics to validate and assess the adequacy of Gaussian process models. These diagnostics are based on comparisons between real observations and model predictions for

Resumen
Deterministic computer simulations of physical experiments are now common techniques in science and engineering. Often, physical experiments are too time consuming, expensive or impossible to conduct. Complex computer models or codes, rather than physical experiments lead to the study of computer experiments, which are used to investigate many scientific phenomena of this nature. A computer experiment consists of a number of runs of the computer code with different input choices. The Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments is a rapidly growing technique in statistical experimental design.

This work is on Gaussian-process based approximation of a code which can be run at different levels of accuracy. The goal is to improve the predictions of a surrogate model of a complex computer code using fast approximations of it. A new formulation of a co-kriging based method has been proposed. In particular this formulation allows for fast implementation and for closed-form expressions for the predictive mean and variance for universal co-kriging in the multi-fidelity framework, which is a breakthrough as it really allows for the practical application of such a method in real cases. Gaussian Processes (GPs) are commonly used in the analysis of data from a computer experiment. Ideally, the analysis will provide accurate predictions with correct coverage probabilities of credible intervals. A Bayesian method can, in principle, capture all sources of uncertainty and hence give valid inference. Several implementations are available in the literature, differing in choice of priors, etc. In this thesis, we first review three popular Bayesian methods in the analysis of computer experiments. Some problems with arbitrarily defined base rules for the simulation appeared during the construction of the model. Motivated by the analysis of a specific type of cell adhesion experiments, a new frame-work based on hidden Markov model and double penalized order selection is proposed. A modified Expectation-Maximization algorithm is introduced to efficiently estimate parameters in the model. Simulations show that the proposed framework outperforms existing methods.
