Resumen
The conservation of electric charge Q is a universal law in the sense that it should be conserved in any interaction, known or yet unknown. However, Q should not be considered as a simple number but as the half sum of two irreducible quantities, the baryon lepton asymmetric number BAL = A-L (where A is the baryonic number and L is the leptonic number) and total flavor TF. Conservation of electric charge implies obviously conservation of Q (considered as a simple number) but also BAL and TF. We verify that electromagnetism and strong interaction which conserve Q, A and L and all individual flavors conserve obviously BAL and TF; that weak interaction which conserves Q, A and L conserves also BAL and TF. However, conservation of BAL does not necessarily imply conservation of A and L. In effect Δ BAL = 0 has another solution ΔA = ΔL = ±1 which points to a possible solution to explain how a material and neutral universe could arise evolving from an A = 0, L = 0, Q = 0 state to an A > 0, Q = 0 state through a process which would conserve BAL and TF without conserving separately A and L.

Resumen
Background: Concrete buildings on Guam are exceptionally strong but also accumulate large amounts of heat. In the tropical environment of Guam, where 24 h average temperature ranges from 28 to 29°C year round, air conditioning is used every day and continuously. Concrete roofs are often painted light colors, which make them more reflective and accumulate less heat. They are also suitable for establishment of vegetation, which results in a large decrease in roof temperature and therefore decreases the need for cooling. Objective: The objective was to determine the magnitude of temperature reductions resulting from light color and from vegetation covering roof tops and to use this information to estimate energy savings. Method: Temperature was measured on the undersides of concrete model roofs in both sunny and rainy weather. Results: The temperatures on the undersides of light-colored concrete model roofs rose up to 3°C less in the course of the day than did those of dark-colored ones. The temperatures of "green" (vegetation-covered) model roofs rose up to 12°C less than did those of either of the bare concrete models. Conclusion: The differences were so large that use of green roofs on the tropical island of Guam, where most buildings are concrete and air-conditioning is needed year round, could cut a typical household's electric consumption in half.

Resumen
Apart from the familiar structure firmly-rooted in the general relativistic field equations where the energy–momentum tensor has a null divergence i.e., it conserves, there exists a considerable number of extended theories of gravity allowing departures from the usual conservative framework. Many of these theories became popular in the last few years, aiming to describe the phenomenology behind dark matter and dark energy. However, within these scenarios, it is common to see attempts to preserve the conservative property of the energy–momentum tensor. Most of the time, it is done by means of some additional constraint that ensures the validity of the standard conservation law, as long as this option is available in the theory. However, if no such extra constraint is available, the theory will inevitably carry a non-trivial conservation law as part of its structure. In this work, we review some of such proposals discussing the theoretical construction leading to the non-conservation of the energy–momentum tensor.

Resumen
AbstractCable bacteria of the family Desulfobulbaceae couple spatially separated sulfur oxidation and oxygen or nitrate reduction by long-distance electron transfer, which can constitute the dominant sulfur oxidation process in shallow sediments. However, it remains unknown how cells in the anoxic part of the centimeter-long filaments conserve energy. We found 16S rRNA gene sequences similar to groundwater cable bacteria in a 1-methylnaphthalene-degrading culture (1MN). Cultivation with elemental sulfur and thiosulfate with ferrihydrite or nitrate as electron acceptors resulted in a first cable bacteria enrichment culture dominated >90% by 16S rRNA sequences belonging to the Desulfobulbaceae. Desulfobulbaceae-specific fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) unveiled single cells and filaments of up to several hundred micrometers length to belong to the same species. The Desulfobulbaceae filaments also showed the distinctive cable bacteria morphology with their continuous ridge pattern as revealed by atomic force microscopy. The cable bacteria grew with nitrate as electron acceptor and elemental sulfur and thiosulfate as electron donor, but also by sulfur disproportionation when Fe(Cl)2 or Fe(OH)3 were present as sulfide scavengers. Metabolic reconstruction based on the first nearly complete genome of groundwater cable bacteria revealed the potential for sulfur disproportionation and a chemo-litho-autotrophic metabolism. The presence of different types of hydrogenases in the genome suggests that they can utilize hydrogen as alternative electron donor. Our results imply that cable bacteria not only use sulfide oxidation coupled to oxygen or nitrate reduction by LDET for energy conservation, but sulfur disproportionation might constitute the energy metabolism for cells in large parts of the cable bacterial filaments.

Resumen
One of the greatest problems encountered in greenhouses and buildings with large glazing is control of the internal atmosphere. The inherent characteristic of these buildings to act as solar collectors is to be used effectively for collecting and storing the excess solar energy. A new type of glazed roof, a Solar Climate Control roof system, was designed as a means to cool the interior environment of the greenhouses during the daytime and to heat during the nighttime or on overcast days.
A heat exchanger-storage system, using water as a thermal mass is included in the design of the Solar Climate Control system. A film of water flows on the inner surface of the roof and absorbs the direct solar heat radiation, acting then as a cooling agent. The energy absorbed may be reused for nighttime heating.
An efficient water dispersion pipe for the Solar Climate Control system was developed. The use of a soap solution rather than water alone for the Solar Climate Control water film system permitted a significant reduction in pumping rate and improved uniformity of the film.
A computer simulation model was run to determine the energy loads for both a conventional (double glazed roof) greenhouse and one equipped with the Solar Climate Control system. The Solar Climate Control system shows low operating cost and very good efficiency in heat removal.

Resumen
Greenhouse gas emissions are caused, in part, by human activities. However, consumers may assume that the burden of environmental problems, such as carbon emissions reduction through sustainable energy practices, should be borne by the entire society. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to test whether behavioral determinants and demographic factors could influence homeowners' intent to conserve energy. Empirical data were collected from 436 sampled homeowners in the Northeast region of the United States using an online survey questionnaire. The survey instrument was adapted from Ajzen's theory of planned behavior instrument. Variables aligned with the theory of planned behavior, alongside sociodemographic factors, were used to explain any impact the predictors had on the outcome. A multiple ordinary least squares regression model was used to answer the 3 research questions. According to the study findings, the most significant positive relationship was found between homeowners' beliefs about energy conservation and the intent to conserve energy. There was also a significant positive relationship between the other predictors and the outcome at varying levels. Policymakers could generate support for energy efficiency and conservation by educating consumers about alternative energy options as a means of mitigating carbon emissions and air pollution. This study may lead to a positive social change by supporting regional policymakers in designing and promoting cost-effective behavioral solutions and demographic change support systems as an alternative policy tool that could encourage a sustainable energy consumption practice at the household level.

Hardly a week goes by without a major news story related to the global and local environment. Every one has heard of global warming and the climate changes being felt as average temperatures rise in most parts of the world. At the state and local levels we have all heard about the dwindling water resources how these might limit the future growth of Arizona. Without electrical energy (electricity) to keep cool and pump water life in our arid and semi-arid climates would become unbearable. What we often do not realize is that electricity production, water resources and global warming are all interconnected. By becoming more aware of the global issues that are confronting us, we will also become more sensitive to local and individual concerns. And by acting individually and locally we can have a positive impact in controlling the global issues that we all face. In the first page, this Bulletin hopes to bring renewed awareness to AZ residents and their need to conserve electricity in their daily lives by connecting their individual actions to local, state and global effects. The following topics will be introduced: Global Warming and its Local Impact Arizona Water Resources Electricity Production in Arizona The second page will be devoted to providing energy saving tips at home by providing a primer of basic electricity concepts, how to measure electricity usage at home, examples of wasted electricity, and tips on how to reduce electricity use at home with little effort or discomfort.

Resumen

A theoretical model is proposed for the buckling of a three-dimensional vein subjected to torsion, internal pressure, and axial tension using energy conservation methods. The vein is assumed to be an anisotropic hyperelastic cylindrical shell which obeys the Fung constitutive model. Finite deformation theory for thick-walled blood vessels is used to characterize the vessel dilation in the pre-buckling state.

The pre-buckling state is identified by its midpoint and then perturbed by a displacement vector field dependent on the circumferential and axial directions to define the buckled state. The total potential energy functional of the system is extremized by minimizing the first variation with respect to the elements of the set of all continuous bounded functions on R 3. The Euler-Lagrange equations form three coupled linear partial differential equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions characterizing the buckling displacement field under equilibrium.

A second solution method approximates the first variation of the total potential energy functional using a variational Taylor series expansion. The approximation is minimized and combined with equations of equilibrium derived from elasticity theory to yield a polynomial relating buckling eigenmodes, material parameters, geometric parameters, and the critical angle of twist which induces buckling. Various properties of the total potential energy functional specific to the problem are proved. Another solution method is outlined using the first variation approximation and the basis of the kernel of the linear transformation which maps buckling displacement amplitudes during static equilibrium.

Método Energia-Momentum Generalizado – MEMG; Segundo as seguintes características desejáveis: 1. ________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

Energy-momentum decaying algorithms; 3. Minimal numerical dissipation of lower frequences; 4. Controllable numerical dissipation of high frequences; 5. Convergence of iterative solution strategy; A set of examples is chosen to point out the properties of the discussed implicit time integration schemes. The non-linear pendulum problem is studied as a rigid pendulum and also as an elastic pendulum. Finally, the classical four-bar-chain system is analyzed.

This work aims to analyse daylighting strategies applied in early stages of architectural design as to improve lighting quality and energy savings in school buildings. Similar strategies have already been successfully applied in many countries around the world, enhancing student?s performance and well being while helping to save energy. Among the strategies studied, the author describes an experiment under real sky conditions using a physical scale model of a standard classroom equipped with a roof monitor combined with an overhang and interior vertical diffusing baffles as a way to check its influence in interior lighting conditions. The experiment has shown that the use of daylighting strategies can promote an adequate control of solar radiation, avoiding direct sunlight penetration inside the classrooms, limiting glare problems and excessive heat of hot climates. At the same time, such strategies optimise both direct and defuse use of daylight to improve visual comfort and energy savings.

Wireless Sensor Networks are networks suitable for data collection in harsh environments, where it would be difficult or costly the deployment of wired infrastructure. In spite of these advantages, such networks often rely on batteries to operate, which may lead to a serious limitation on the networks lifetime. Bearing this in mind, in this dissertation, it is proposed and tested a hybrid polling approach that reduces the number of frames transmitted by the router node. Thus, the router node lifetime can be extended significantly and hence the network lifetime. The proposed technique becomes progressively more advantageous, when compared to classical polling technique, as the number of network nodes increases. The experimental results obtained using a network with four nodes indicate a network lifetime increase of about 32.14%. Importantly, the sensor network lifetime extension increases the economic viability of the technology and thus makes it more accessible to potential users.

Abstract Compared to the industry sector, the progress of energy conservation of the household sector is very slow. It is because the household sector is more diverse than the industrial sector, and regulatory enforcement is much more difficult. The government can stop firms’ operation if their environmental burden is too heavy but cannot stop household’s activities. Therefore, the government needs to find energy conservation policies that are supported by the public. Like other countries, the Japanese government has introduced various energy conservation measures to reduce the energy usage from households for the past several decades. It has introduced energy efficiency standards for energy-consuming durables and provided subsidies to promote energy-efficient products in recent years. At the same time, it has raised the price of energy in order to provide households with an appropriate incentive to conserve. In addition, it has promoted renewable energy usage in the household sector. Facing climate change, the Japanese government has not introduced energy conservation measures systematically but rather on an ad hoc basis. In this chapter, we review energy conservation measures implemented in the household sector in Japan. We then make policy recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of energy conservation measures in the household sector.

Resumen
AbstractWith the introduction of the Construction Products Directive EU305:2011, architects are more than ever required to select products with a high proportion of renewable raw materials. Only then will it be possible to internalise, hence to compensate, for environmental damage caused by technologies that do not conserve resources and are energy-intensive. Using a novel bio-based wood-plastic composite (WPC) as an example, this chapter shows that internalisation can be successful if conventional fossil plastics are “greened” by adding renewable biomass. The results show that this is only the case if the bio-content is not too high but exceeds a minimum value. The degree of sustainability depends on the assessment of the extent of damage to the environment and society. The optimal level of internalisation can then become allocatively efficient, meaning that the costs of avoiding plastics do not increase more than the damage costs decrease. The findings demonstrate that environmental protection can also be economically meaningful and potentially contributes to increasing social welfare in society. A paradigm shift towards restorative economy in construction should take this principle into account.

Resumen
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are characterized by a network of small, battery powered devices, operating remotely with no pre-existing infrastructure. The unique structure of WSN allow for novel approaches to data reduction and energy preservation. This paper presents a modification to the existing Q-routing protocol by providing an alternate action of performing sensor data reduction in place thereby reducing energy consumption, bandwidth usage, and message transmission time. The algorithm is further modified to include an energy factor which increases the cost of forwarding as energy reserves deplete. This encourages the network to conserve energy in favor of network preservation when energy reserves are low. Our experimental results show that this approach can, in periods of high network traffic, simultaneously reduce bandwidth, conserve energy, and maintain low message transition times.
