Resumen
This paper presents the features of corn as raw material for groat industry. Corn is used in many segments of the food andprocessing industry. corn is processed for traditional food products — groats, flakes, flour, extruded foods, and other corn byproductsare widely used for the production of dry breakfast cereals, snacks, cereal bars. In terms of using of the advanced processingtechnologies, the industry produces starch, gluten, and germs. Corn germ is used to produce the high-value vegetable oil, aswell as starch — for both food and non-food purposes. More than half (65%) of corn is used for feed purposes, 25% –technical purposes, and nearly 20% – for various types of food production. corn is processed for traditional food products — groats, flakes, flour, extruded foods, and other corn by-products are widely used for the production of dry breakfast cereals, snacks, cereal bars. For thecolour, corn is divided into white and yellow types. According to the literature data analysis, yellow corn is more used in China,Argentina, Brazil, while white corn — in some countries of Asia, Latin America, and the Balkan countries. Depending on itsmorphological features, the corn kernelis divided into various groups, species and subspecies. In Ukraine corn kernel is classified into 8 types, with separately defined limitations on the content of the major crop in thebatch, grains of other type, etc. Corn of І-VІІІ types with the quality indicators specified in the standard, for the production of foodproducts. Flint and dent corn types are the most applied grain varieties in the industry, they are widely used in the production segmentof food and feed products. Sweet corn is widely used as a vegetable crop in the food canning, food concentrates, starch andbrewing industries due to its flavor properties. Popped corn is not only the most convenient raw material for the production of popcorn, but it also can be used as the raw material for the production of corn curls and dry breakfast cereals By analyzing the weightfraction of fat in kernels of different corn varieties we can note that the lowest number of fat is typical for popped corn (4.0%) andthe largest – for sweet corn (9.1%); dent and flint corn have the same total fat number (4.5-4.9%).Test weight of corn types – poppedcorn ranges within 712-826 g/l, dent corn - 875-893 g/l, and flint corn - 768-786 g/l. The weight of 1000 kernels of corn dependingon the varieties changes within 150-600 g.

Resumen
How a company conducts business is often a consumer concern. Individuals have accused company after company of monopolistic behavior. These individuals have also criticized the Department of Justice for not stopping a monopoly from forming in a specific industry. An example is the corn seed industry, where stakeholders have accused companies of monopolistic behavior. Recent mergers and acquisitions in the corn seed industry have left fewer companies in control, and because of this consolidation, individuals are urging the government to act. This Comment argues that, while the corn seed industry is on the road to containing a monopoly, the industry does not yet contain enough characteristics to warrant a government response. However, when a monopoly does form, the government should, and likely will, act.

Resumen
The fuel ethanol industry has been in rapid development in recent years with the US as a leading force, which consumes large amount of corn. In order to assess the impact of corn-ethanol production on global corn price, a VAR model is used in this paper. By impulse responses analysis and variance decomposition analysis the direct impact of corn-ethanol production on global corn price and its relative importance compared with other external factors are proved. The results show that increasing amount of corn used for US ethanol production leads to rapid increases of global corn price when the corn production is steady. The proportion of corn used for ethanol production among total corn production in the US plays an important role in affecting global corn price among all external factors, and the significance of its impact will enhance in the long run. The fuel ethanol industry should turn to non-grain materials in the future to keep the global corn price steady and guarantee global food security, and it’s necessary for all fuel ethanol producers to take action.

Resumen
Two experiments were completed to develop methods for extracting xanthophylls from corn industry co-products, post fermentation (PF) corn oil and corn gluten meal (CGM). A solid phase extraction (SPE) method was used to fractionate a xanthophyll-rich portion of PF corn oil by varying conditioning and eluting solvents used with a diol SPE column. Conditioning with dichloromethane yielded highest xanthophyll fractionation, 86.5%. The elution solvent selected did not impact fractionation based on a two-way ANOVA. Supercritical fluid extraction of xanthohpylls from CGM was modeled using a Box-Behnken design, varying temperature, pressure, and co-solvent ratio. The optimum conditions were determined to be 40 ?C, 6820 psi, and 15% co-solvent, which would extract 85.4 ?g lutein/g CGM, 2.6 times more lutein than an ethanol and chloroform: dichloromethane solvent extraction. Co-solvent was the most influential extraction parameter and increasing it further could yield higher xanthophyll recovery. With further studies, this work has industrial potential.

Resumen
Master of Agribusiness
Department of Agricultural Economics
Elizabeth Yeager
The corn silage market is typically focused heavily on the dairy market and results for corn silage plots are dedicated to the dairy industry specifically to get to the overall answer of $ Milk/Acre. The beef cattle industry is more interested in pounds of beef that can be gained from corn silage. There are roughly 6.2 million acres of corn silage in the US. Within that 6 million acres, roughly half is fed to beef cattle, but the corn silage industry has not focused on this aspect of the market. Within Mycogen Seeds there has been an ever increasing demand to find a way to deliver the corn silage plot data in a useable format for beef producers. By delivering corn silage plot data to beef producers, Mycogen has aspirations of increasing it’s market share of the corn silage market in Kansas as well as across the US, while at the same time increasing the awareness of how quality of a corn silage hybrid can affect a producers operation. This thesis examines corn silage plot info sample analysis and specific feed analysis calculations. With these specific calculations, the corn silage plot will illustrate information in a form that beef producers will understand, $ Beef Produced/Acre. At the same time, this thesis will examine the industry wide concept that tonnage is the only component that is important when selecting a corn silage hybrid. Finally this thesis will examine at what point ($/bushel) in the corn grain market does it make sense to start looking at utilizing corn silage over dry rolled corn by comparing price per MegaCalorie of energy by utilizing 25 year historical corn grain prices and using the Purdue Method of determining the cost of corn silage on a per ton basis.

Resumen
AbstractPrevious studies have indicated that agricultural biomass ash is an important resource with great potential for the construction sector. To valorize agricultural waste (as a renewable energy source and as a supplementary cementitious material—SCM), the crucial steps in the integrated management system of the circular economy cycle are the establishment and maintenance of database on crop production, namely, on harvest residues amount and quantity and quality of available biomass ash. The purpose of the study was to establish a multi-level georeferenced interactive database (map) on the produced quantities of agricultural biomass ash and cement consumption in Vojvodina region (Republic of Serbia), based on the analysis of agricultural biomass ash stream through three sectors as potential actors of the supply chain: agriculture (biomass producers)—industry (biomass users)—construction industry (users of biomass ash). Conducted research indicates the annual potential of over 2.4 million tons of harvest residues from corn, wheat, soya and sunflower, available for energy purposes in Vojvodina region. The potentially available amount of ash that might be generated annually by harvest residues combustion is estimated at over 196 thousand tons. Identified available amount of biomass ash (4.2 thousand tons) indicates an extremely low utilization (~2%) of the biomass potential. On an annual basis, all current agricultural biomass ash production can be used for partial cement substitution up to 30% in six construction companies. However, the generated ash is mostly disposed of in municipal landfills, which represents the end of the waste stream.

Resumen
The production capacity of corn ethanol as a transportation fuel is experiencing rapid growth in the United States. The demand is driven by increased prices of gasoline, government mandates, incentives, desire for cleaner fuels, and the need to be more self-reliant in energy sources. Continued strong growth of the corn ethanol industry will depend on profitability by both suppliers and producers. This in turn will be influenced by several factors such as demand, government incentives, feedstock availability and prices, processing plant capacity, and efficient farm and ethanol processing technologies. How and to what extent will the projected growth of the corn ethanol industry in the United States be influenced by some or all of these factors? We use system dynamics modeling to construct a causal-loop structure of the corn ethanol industry and stock and flow diagrams to explore how possible changes in projected factors and growth indicators will affect the industry. Currently, planners and researchers explore various energy supply options by the year 2030. Using system dynamics modeling, this paper explores different possible growth scenarios of the industry for the next twenty years.

Resumen
For the production of traditional building materials, excavated natural resources are used. The production process of such materials requires high-energy demands, wherefore, high amounts of CO2 gases, which have a great impact on climate change, are emitted. Only a small part of such materials is effectively recycled and reused. Generally, they are transported to landfills, which rapidly expand and may pollute the soil, groundwater and air. Currently, a great attention is paid to the production of novel building materials. The aim is to use as less excavated materials as possible and replace them by natural renewable resources. Therefore, the recycling and utilisation at the end of life cycle of such materials would be easier and generation of waste would reduce. This way, the efforts of switching to circular economy are being put. One of the approaches – wider application of vegetable-based raw materials (cultivated and uncultivated agricultural plants). The usage of fibre hemp shives (HS) as an aggregate and corn stach (CS) as a binding material allows development of biocomposite boards (WPCs) which could contribute to the solution of the before mentioned problems. Bio-sourced materials combined with a polymer matrix offer an interesting alternative to traditional building materials. To contribute to their wider acceptance and application, an investigation into the use of wood-polymer composite boards is presented. In this study, biocomposite boards for the building industry are reported. WPCa are fabricated using a dry incorporation method of corn starch and HS treatment with water at 100 °C. The amount of CS and the size of the HS fraction are evaluated by means of compressive, bending and tensile strength, as well as microstructure. The results show that the rational amount of CS, independently on HS fraction, is 10 wt.%. The obtained WPCs have compressive stress at 10% of deformation in the range of (2.4–3.0) MPa, bending of (4.4–6.3) MPa and tensile strength of (0.23– 0.45) MPa. Additionally, the microstructural analysis shows that 10 wt.% of CS forms a sufficient amount of contact zones that strengthen the final product. The obtained average density (~319–408 kg/m3) indicate that, according to European normative document EN 316, WPCs can be classified as softboards and used as self-bearing structural material for building industry. Based on the requirements, WPCs can be applied in dry and humid conditions for the internal and external uses without loading (EN 622-4, section 4.2) or as load-bearing boards in dry and humid conditions for instantaneous or short-term load duration (EN 622-4, section 4.3).

Resumen
Bearing in mind that undergraduate students must get involved in research and that local industry must be a university partner, the School of Engineering, from University of Minho, has taken the initiative in funding some technical research projects in specifically defined areas (http://www.eng.uminho.pt). In this context, one of the projects founded concerns the development and testing of functional knitting which can be used with success in the lining of a shoe. The study of shoe comfort is of great importance to sport and leisure footwear manufactures, because in these particular situations, moisture disposal over a number of hours is a main problem. Three structures which combine different raw materials (soybean fiber, bamboo fiber, corn fiber, cotton, polypropylene and polyester) have been manufactured by a local textile factory. A group of students mainly from Mechanical and Textile Engineering classes are currently testing these knitting in terms of their water vapor and air permeability and other physical parameters at the laboratory. Tests with a thermal manikin have been used to measure its thermal insulation. A transient model for heat and mass transfer in a fabric has been implemented. From the solution, temperature and vapor density profiles in the fabric thickness can be obtained as well as, the amount of water dissolved in the fabric. This model has been integrated with an existing human thermal comfort model. Thermal comfort surveys are now being made at the Ergonomics Laboratory of the University of Minho with undergraduate Mechanical and Industrial Engineering students, wearing sport shoes manufactured by a local footwear factory, and these results can be compared using statistical analysis, with the experimental and numerical results already obtained.

Resumen
Corn plays a leading role in providing the livestock industry with green and juicy feeds. To increase the yield and quality of green mass, the use of nitrogen fertilizers is of great importance [1]. In a field experiment on sod-podzolic soils in the conditions of the Minsk region, on the basis of LLC "Gastellovskoye" of the Minsk district, the influence of nitrogen fertilizer Life Force Humic N on the yield and quality of the green mass of the Dolphin corn hybrid was studied. Water-soluble nitrogen fertilizer Life Force Humic N on corn crops was used in phases: 4–6 leaves, sweeping of the panicle and the beginning of flowering of the crop. The content of the main elements of nutrition (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) in the green mass of corn under the influence of the fertilizer Life Force Humic N varied within the error of the experiment and at the level with the use of control. No significant changes in the protein content depending on the use of equivalent doses of mineral nitrogen (control) and Life Force Humic N fertilizer have been established. The maximum protein content (5.6–5.7%) was noted both in the variant with the use of top dressing with standard nitrogen fertilizer and with the Life Force Humic N. fertilizer. When cultivating corn for green mass, the use of three-fold non-root treatment of crops with liquid water-soluble nitrogen fertilizer Life Force Humic N increased the yield of the green mass of the crop by 31 c / ha. When cultivating corn for green mass, the use of non-root treatments with Life Force Humic N fertilizer at a dose of 1 l/ ha is recommended.

Resumen
Recently, the vegetable corn industry has shifted from the use of traditional cultivars with the sugary1 (su1) endosperm mutation to newer hybrids homozygous for the shrunken2 (sh2) or sugary enhancer1 (se1) genes. With greater kernel sucrose content, these hybrids are preferred by consumers and retain sugar for longer post harvest periods, providing the industry with more time to marker products with superior quality. Commercialization has been hindered, however, by reduced field emergence, and the establishment of stands with heterogeneous uniformity and maturities. This investigation was conducted to identify key biochemical and physiological characteristics in sh2 and se1 maize kernels associated with improved emergence, and stand establishment; and in immature ears at fresh harvest maturity, properties associated with eating quality. The location of genes or QTL controlling these kernel characteristics and other traits were then mapped to specific chromosomal regions by their linkage to molecular markers using two segregating F2:3 populations. This database was used to compare the efficiency of marker-assisted selection of key alleles with phenotypic selection for trait improvement. A model designed to uncover and quantify digenic interaction was applied to the datasets to evaluate the role of epistasis in the inheritance of quantitative traits.

Resumen
largest world producer of automotive vehicles. The Mexican experience is part of the more general case of the “integrated peripheries.” The development of these cannot be accounted for separately from the developments occurring in its core country. Unlike the core-periphery literature, however, our analysis emphasizes that the various clusters of cores and integrated peripheries are not alike. In the case under study, the core has been systematically lagging behind the main transformations pioneered by its competitors. The paper traces the evolution of the Mexican automotive industry, emphasizing the difficulties faced by a late-comer country in developing an independent industry, and the importance of policy choices as well as the macroeconomic context in affecting its development. NAFTA represents the culmination of an integration process that has profoundly transformed the structure of the Mexican automotive industry, deepening its dependence on the US market. While there is no doubt that it has contributed to the spectacular growth of the Mexican auto industry, whether it also increased its resilience or, rather, its dependence is still an open question. This issue is particularly relevant in view of the transformations that are taking place in the automotive sector and in the geopolitical scenario. These include the end of NAFTA and the advent of USMCA, the entry of powerful competitors into the global market, and the transition to electric and autonomous vehicles, which all entail risks and opportunities. The lens of the centre-periphery relationship can help to understand the present integration of North America and its future direction.

Resumen
More and more systems-related terms are emerging in the scientific literature, in curricula, and in popular media: systems thinking, systems approaches, systems analysis, systems dynamics, systems mapping, just to name a few. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, thinking systemically can help us to understand, communicate, address, and educate about challenges we face. Systems thinking is both an approach to seeing the world in a way that makes connections and relationships more visible and improves our decision-making abilities, and a set of methods and tools. This current collection of materials includes a synthesis, exercises, and teacher guidance materials. The synthesis provides an overview of ways to think about systems and of systems thinking tools that can be useful to educators and learners in any discipline. The exercises leverage the content in the synthesis by focusing on two different systems thinking tools: a semi-quantitative modeling tool called Mental Modeler and stakeholder analysis. Students use Mental Modeler to explore the current dynamics of and links between corn and beef production in the United States and use stakeholder analysis to explore a suite of issues ranging from public health initiatives like food labeling to human rights abuses in the fisheries industry. These exercises are the initial building blocks for a broader collection currently under development.

Resumen
Since formaldehyde is ubiquitous (e.g., naturally formed through atmospheric chemistry even if not directly emitted), there is also the potential that atmospheric levels and atmospheric chemistry are not adequately understood. That avenue of investigation may provide important information that could be important in assessing formaldehyde health risk, source contribution, and ultimately regulatory criteria for gas-fired combustion sources. In 2002 and 2003, the pipeline industry conducted turbine formaldehyde testing using refined FTIR methods and a dedicated measurement system, which indicated exhaust formaldehyde below 100 ppb and near the method detection limit. Anecdotal data from that test program showed ambient levels similar to turbine exhaust in some cases. For example, during the industry test program, a serendipitous finding observed that ambient formaldehyde concentrations varied and were independent of turbine operation. Instead, naturally occurring emissions from an adjacent corn field appeared to spike the ambient concentration to levels higher than formaldehyde exhaust levels, depending on whether there was direct sunlight or shading from a cloud (i.e., due to naturally occurring formaldehyde from vegetation and/or other organics and ambient photochemistry that forms formaldehyde). Evidence of high ambient formaldehyde levels (relative to turbine exhaust) would be a powerful counterargument to restrictive formaldehyde regulations. If ambient levels are similar to (or higher than) in-stack formaldehyde for turbines, then a NESHAP requiring catalytic control of turbine formaldehyde results in a significant burden without environmental benefit, while also negatively impacting turbine efficiency and environmental impacts associated with catalyst construction, installation, operation, cleaning, and disposal. Similarly, if ambient formaldehyde is significantly higher (in at least some circumstances) than currently available ambient data suggests, there could be implications for perceived formaldehyde risk and the basis, need for, and stringency of formaldehyde reductions from turbines or other combustion sources. In a more far-reaching impact, ambient FTIR data could provide additional insights on atmospheric reactions that not only impact formaldehyde issues, but also ozone (and NOx control issues) because of the importance of formaldehyde and hydrocarbon chemistry in ambient ozone formation. These determinations are challenged by the ability to accurately measure formaldehyde at levels less than 100 parts per billion (ppbv). Ambient measurements rely on batch methods subject to error (due to the inherent instability and reactivity of formaldehyde), and those methods do not provide real-time continuous results. Extractive Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) methods were developed for combustion exhaust formaldehyde measurement, but measuring the ultra-low levels from turbines, commensurate with the NESHAP standard of 90 ppb, is challenging. This project was intended assess ambient formaldehyde levels as compared to the NESHAP standard and acquire additional ambient measurement data using FTIR testing.
