Resumen
The aim of this study was to assess the role of the routine practice of microbial culture and sensitivity at incision and drainage of superficial soft tissue abscesses. The case notes of 162 consecutive patients, selected from the microbiology database over a period of 1 year, were reviewed. All had incision and drainage of superficial soft tissue abscesses and included perianal, pilonidal, axillary, and breast abscesses. Patients with chronic wounds, recurrent abscesses, diabetes, pregnancy, and immunosuppression were excluded. The impact of pus culture and sensitivity (C/S) on management and clinical outcome was documented. Out of 162 patients, 97 were male (59.8%) and 65 were female (40.1%). Only 115 (70.9%) yielded positive cultures and 47 (29.1%) were sterile. The cultured microbial flora was predictable and sensitive to empirical antibiotics. In four patients, the results of microbial culture sensitivity showed microbial resistance to empirical antibiotics; however, it did not affect the management or the outcome for these patients. The routine practice of sending swabs for C/S after incision and drainage of superficial soft tissue abscesses does not contribute significantly towards patient management. Most patients are already on antibiotics prior to the referral and in the remainder, surgeons start antibiotics empirically. These broad-spectrum antibiotics cover the common pathogens involved, and there is no significant change in the antibiotic treatment after reviewing the culture reports following incision and drainage of uncomplicated superficial skin abscesses.

Resumen
Acute tonsillitis is a common childhood disease, but repeated antibiotic treatment may fail, leading to tonsillectomy. Superficial swab cultures do not sufficiently represent the core bacteria present, but fine-needle aspiration may be a promising diagnostic method. We evaluated 58 patients undergoing tonsillectomy, and took superficial and core swabs, and fine-needle aspirations. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common bacterial pathogen identified, present in 26 out of 50 (52%) positive core cultures, followed by Haemophilus influenza in 13 positive core cultures (26%), and group A β-haemolytic streptococci in 10 positive core cultures (20%). Fine-needle aspiration detected 33 out of 50 positive core cultures (66%), whereas superficial swab culture detected 18 of 50 (36%); the difference being statistically significant. All pathogens detected by superficial swabs and fine-needle aspiration were detected in core cultures. The sensitivity and specificity of fine-needle aspiration were 66% and 100%, respectively, compared with 36% and 100% for superficial swabs. Fine-needle aspiration is therefore a promising method for detecting core bacteria in patients with recurrent tonsillitis.

Resumen
Background-Superficial Mycosis, which is the most common fungal infection affecting human beings, includes Dermatophytosis and Dermatomycoses, which are the infections of superficial keratinized layer of skin, nail & hair by Dermatophytes and non Dermatophytic moulds or yeasts respectively. This clinical entity is very common in hot, humid tropical climate of India with prevalence ranging from 30-60% but its precise case magnitude and epidemiology in North eastern India cannot be stated as there are only few studies conducted. So, this study is undertaken to 1) Find the prevalence of Superficial Mycosis in a tertiary health care centre of Southern Assam. 2) Study the clinical profile of the cases 3) Isolate and identify the causative agents of Superficial mycosis. Materials & Method- The study has been conducted on 250 samples from clinically suspected and untreated cases of superficial mycosis from Aug 2017 to Dec 2018. 2 separate sets of samples from edge of skin lesion/nail /hair were collected, of which 1 sample was subjected to direct microscopy with (10-40) % KOH and the other part was subjected to 2 sets of fungal culture in SDA tubes at 25°C and 37°C & followed for 3 weeks. In Culture positive cases, fungal identification was based on colony morphology, pigment production & LPCB mount. For confirmation of isolates, Slide Culture and biochemical tests were done. Result-Out of total 250 samples,115 samples (46%) showed presence of fungal elements in KOH examination, of which 73 were culture positive and of the KOH negative samples 10 samples were culture positive, thus making the prevalence 33.2% (83/250). Clinically, Tinea corporis was the most common form of both superficial mycosis & Dermatophytosis and Pityriasis Versicolor has been found the most common Dermatomycosis. Males(21-50yrs) were affected by superficial mycosis more than Females(16-30yr). Trichophyton mentagrophyte was the mostly isolated agent causing superficial mycosis. Resumen
Dissociated avian salt gland secretory cells were maintained in primary culture after plating on hydrated collagen gels. When seeded at 3 X 10(6) cells/cm2, confluent cell sheets formed within 2-3 days, whereas cultures seeded at lower densities formed a complex reticulum of cell aggregates, which remained nonconfluent even after 7 days. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the free surface of 3-day confluent cultures consisted of intermixed convex and flattened cell membranes with prominent junctional boundaries and abundant microvilli. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that these cultures were multilayers of 1-4 cells in thickness. The plasma membranes of the superficial cells were polarized into apical and basolateral regions displaying, respectively, microvilli and interdigitating lateral membrane folds. These membrane domains were separated by shallow occluding junctions, which consisted of both single strands and simple net-like arrays in freeze-fracture images. Underlying epithelial cells retained lateral membrane folds and formed desmosomal contacts with superficial and neighboring cells. These cultures, unlike the intact tissue, allow direct access to the apical and basolateral cell surfaces for electrophysiological analysis of transmural active ion transport.

Resumen
Objective Previous work has shown that increasing the production of boundary lubricant, superficial zone protein (SZP), did not reduce the friction coefficient of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs and was possibly due to poor retention of the lubricant. The aim of this investigation was to reduce the friction coefficient of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs through enhancing SZP retention by the exogenous addition of extracellular matrix (ECM) extracted from the superficial zone of native articular cartilage. Design Superficial zone cartilage was shaved from juvenile bovine femoral condyles using a dermatome, minced finely with razor blades, extracted with 4 M guanidine-hydrochloride, buffer exchanged with culture medium, and added directly to the culture medium of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs at low (10 µg/mL) and high (100 µg/mL) concentrations for 4 weeks. Biochemical and biomechanical properties were determined at the conclusion of 4 weeks culture. Results ECM treatment increased compressive and tensile stiffness of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs and decreased the friction coefficient. Glycosaminoglycan content decreased and collagen content increased significantly in self-assembled constructs by the ECM treatment. Conclusions Friction coefficients of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs were reduced by adding extracted superficial zone ECM into the culture medium of self-assembled articular cartilage constructs.

Resumen
In recurrent tonsillitis, the pathogenic bacteria are harbored in the tonsil core, and therefore cultures of superficial swab samples are not particularly accurate in identifying specific types of core bacteria. On the other hand, the results of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cultures of core samples have been closely correlated with the findings of core cultures in excised tonsils, and both methods are far superior to surface swabbing. We conducted a prospective study to compare the accuracy of culture findings from tonsillar tissue obtained by surface swabbing, FNA sampling of the tonsil core in situ, and core sampling of the excised tonsil in children with recurrent tonsillitis. Our patient population was made up of 54 children—22 boys and 32 girls, aged 4 to 14 years (mean: 10.7)—who were undergoing elective tonsillectomy during a 1-year period. On the day of surgery, a surface swab, core FNA sample, and dissected core sample were obtained from each patient and sent for culture. Culture showed that the three methods were in agreement in 34 cases (63.0%). In 9 cases (16.7%) the surface swab culture grew different pathogens from those of the two core cultures, and in 3 other cases (5.6%) the surface swab culture was negative while the two core cultures were positive for the same pathogens. In all, the results of core FNA culture and dissected core culture were in agreement in 46 cases (85.2%); in only 4 cases (7.4%) did the core FNA culture fail to accurately identify the causative pathogens. Overall, the sensitivity and specificity of core FNA sampling were 100 and 50% respectively, compared with 82.9 and 30.8% for the superficial tonsillar swab. We conclude that routine culture of surface swab specimens in patients with chronic or recurrent tonsillitis is neither reliable nor valid. We recommend that core FNA sampling be considered the diagnostic method of choice since it can be done on an outpatient basis, it would reliably allow for culture-directed antibiotic therapy, and it could obviate the need for elective tonsillectomy in many cases. However, its feasibility as an office procedure in children remains to be determined.

Resumen
Background. Superficial mycosis is a common fungal infection worldwide, mainly caused by dermatophytes. However, the prevalence of species varies geographically. In addition, fungal treatment is best guided according to species isolated. This study was carried out to determine the clinical as well as mycological profile of superficial mycoses in a tertiary care hospital, Nepal.Methods. This was a prospective case-control laboratory based study conducted over a period of six months from January to June 2014 at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Nepal. A total of 200 specimens were collected from the patients suspected of superficial mycoses. The specimens were macroscopically as well as microscopically examined. The growth was observed up to 4 weeks.Results.Out of total 200 specimens from the patients suspected of superficial mycoses, tinea corporis 50 (25%) was most common clinical types. KOH mount was positive in 89 (44.5%) and culture was positive in 111 (55.5%).Trichophyton mentagrophytes44 (39.6%) was the most common isolate.Conclusions.The diagnostic yields of KOH mount and culture were found to be complementary to each other. Thus both the methods added with clinical findings are equally important to establish superficial mycosis.

Titanium is considered a biomaterial (biocompatible material) due to its low reactivity and the great stability of its surface native oxide layer. With excellent mechanical properties, titanium is widely used as bone substitutes and dental implants. Aiming to contribute for the development of new surfaces to promote osteoblastic cell grow, two ion-beam-modified titanium samples were compared with two commercially available surfaces: polystyrene treated for cellular cultures (PC), and regular titanium used in dental implants (TI). The modified titanium samples were ion beam implanted with 30 and 77 keV phosphorous and BF2, respectively. All surfaces were employed for in vitro assays using cultures of osteoblastic cells (MG-63). The Phosphatase Alkaline Enzymatic Activity (ALP) was measured and associated with the mineralized bio-film formed by the differentiated cells. The concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the mineralized bio-film was measured by Proton Induced X-ray Emission, PIXE. Scanning Electron Microscope images were used to access the bio-film homogeneity and integrity. Contact angle measurements were used to characterize the wettability of the surfaces and the resulting bio-film. In spite of being more hydrophilic, the surfaces PC and TI formed of a less homogeneous bio-film than the PT and BFT surfaces, which were less hydrophilic. The ALP in the cell culture medium indicated greater consumption than secretion for PC and TI, while for PT and BFT accumulation of ALP was observed. Concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were greater for PC and TI samples. The four surfaces can be considered biocompatible (not cytotoxic) due to mineral bio-film formation and enzymatic activity measurements.

This work investigates conceptual and editorial transformations that have been occurring in the area of cultural journalism during the past two decades. It will focus on newspapers in Sao Paulo. As an observation method aiming to detect alterations on the incidence of informative services on the pages of the cultural sections of two newspapers, Folha de S.Paulo and O Estado de S.Paulo, a theoretical model has been developed to classify journalistic production. This numerical model has been applied to almost five-dozen editions of the following sections of the newspapers studied: Ilustrada, Letras, Mais!, TV Folha, Caderno 2, Cultura and Telejornal. They were published between 1990 and 2000. In addition to that, tens of sources have been analyzed in order to formalize the field. Those were referred by the newspapers themselves, by the academic and professional literature and by other written, oral and digital records. Such material reflects partially the intense contemporary debate on the “crisis of criticism”, which is a wide issue that includes the referential destruction of the canon and the undermining effect of market pressures on journalism. The results clearly show that there is a demand for new models of journalistic appreciation on the artistic-cultural sphere, although they are not definite evidence of the appearance of new journalistic formats, which are conceptually deprived of opinion and analysis.

Learning a language is not only about vocabulary, grammar, speaking and understanding the language, but also about apprehending the culture which the language is built on. The cultural aspect of the students’ education is governed by the different themes and countries presented in the text books, and also by other material that the teacher might offer. This study suggests that one cannot blindly trust that the text books fully live up to these criteria, regarding a diverse representation of the Spanish speaking countries and their respective cultures, and that a critical analysis of the text books is important when presenting a non-stereotypical image to the students. In this essay three didactic books are analyzed from a cultural perspective related to the themes and countries represented in the texts. The result shows, on one hand, an overrepresentation of Spain, with more varying themes; and on the other hand, less variation when dealing with the few Hispanic countries that are mentioned.

Results of previous research has found increased potential for the consolidation of bone grafts by demineralization of the graft material and / or areas of consolidation. However there is a lack of foundation supported by biological evidence of benefits from such procedures. To test this hypothesis, the bone tissue of the calvaria of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were exposed to conditioning by citric acid for 15, 30, 90 and 180 seconds (test group). Forty-five bone disks measuring three millimeters in diameter were removed from the animals, of which 36 were conditioned with citric acid pH 1 to 50% and nine did not receive conditioning (control group). About nine disks in each group were pre-cultured with MC3T3- E1 osteoblasts for 24, 48 and 72 hours (three discs of each group at each time point). Analysis of cell morphology, number of cells attached on the surface and the coverage area of these surfaces by pre-osteoblasts were performed on scanning electron microscopy. There was na increase in the number of cells attached to surfaces over time, regardless of conditioning or application time. However, this difference was not statistically significant intra-group (p <0.05) when comparing the periods of 24 and 72 hours of incubation. The coverage area of the surfaces of cells increased significantly with time only in the test groups, also among the incubation periods of 24 and 72 hours (p <0.01). The control group presented with 50% or less of surface area coverage compared to the other. The duration of application of the acid did not affect significantly this parameter of evaluation, but in groups 15 and 30, the bonearea covered more than tripled from 24 to 72 hours (p <0.01), with about 70 % of the area covered by cells, versus 30% in the control group. It was concluded that bone demineralization in the studied conditioning times provides a substrate on which cells acquire pre-osteoblastic morphology compatible with more advanced stage of differentiation, promoting greater coverage area, which increases the potential for deposition of new bone on these surfaces compared to the tissue-air basis.

Abstract:The Objective of this study was to evaluate the topography and surface biofilm formation of feldspathic ceramics obtained through two techniques of preparation and two surface treatments, as well as to evaluate the viability of human gingival fibroblasts (FMM-1) growth on these materials. A total of 52 blocks of each type of feldspathic ceramic were made: VM9 obtained by the stratification technique and Vita Blocs Mark II (VMII) for the CAD/CAM system (both, Vita Zahnfabrik). The blocks' surfaces were standardized in a polishing machine to the dimensions of 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 mm and blocks were divided into two surface finishing treatments: polishing with Ceramisté rubbers + polishing with paste; and glaze application + sintering. The Ra and RSm roughness parameters were measured through a contact rugosimeter. Samples were sterilized and then contaminated (n = 10) for initial heterotypic biofilm formation of S. mutans, S. sanguinis and C. albicans, whose adherence was quantified by counting colony forming units (CFU/mL). The MTT test was used to evaluate the cellular viability of the materials to the growth of human gingival fibroblasts (FMM-1) in 24 h and 7 days (n=12). Qualitative analyzes of the specimens' surface were performed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D optical profilometry. Surface free energy (SFE) was calculated from goniometry analyzes of polar and apolar liquids in 10 samples of 15 x 15 x 1.5 mm. The results of Ra, RSm and ELS were subjected to 2-way ANOVA (Material x surface treatment) followed by Tukey's test (both, α=95%), and UFC (material x surface treatment x microorganisms) and MTT (material x surfacetreatment x time) data were evaluated by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=95%). SEM and profilometry images were described. The polished ceramics presented lower roughness (Ra p=0.015; RSm p=0.049) ...

SEM and profilometry images were described. The polished ceramics presented lower roughness (Ra p=0.015; RSm p=0.049) and higher SFE (p=0.00), with the highest Ra being verified for glazed VM9. Bacterial adherence was influenced by the interaction of all factors (p=0.018). Streptococcus formed in greater number in all materials, but on polished VMII there was no adherence of C. albicans. Initially, the materials showed no cytotoxicity, but the cell viability of all groups was reduced after 7 days (p=0.00). Micrographs showed that microorganisms adherence occurred regardless of irregularities in the topography of the materials, and the profilometry images emphasized the grooved pattern of the polished samples and the glaze accumulation in "islands" in glazed samples. The surface treatments had greater influence than the technique of making the feldsphapatic ceramics. It could be concluded that both obtaining techniques resulted in biocompatible feldsphatic ceramics and that the surface finishing by polishing resulted in lower mean roughness, higher SFE and lower C. albicans adhesion.

Ti and its alloys are metals that show a complete success when used in biological environment. These metals are widely used in bone implants due to their appropriated clinical applications. Biomechanical and biochemical stability, biocompatibility and an efficient osseointegration are the principal requisites to select a biomaterial for using in orthopedics and dentals surgicals implants. To improve bone-tissue integration, various techniques have been used as to increase the roughness and bioactivity of titanium surfaces. Topographic features on implants ranging from micrometers to nanometers and calcium-phosphate coatings are relevant to the biological response. In this work, new surface modifications on Ti for prosthetic implants were developed and tested. Surface treatments of pure Ti were produced by pitting, anodization, chemical deposition of Ca-phosphates and the combination of these processes. Mesenchymal Stem Cells were cultured on the Ti substrates to evaluate the quality of the proposed surfaces modifications for prosthetic implants. Biological analysis and MEV analysis were carried out to characterize the nano and micropores on the surfaces as well as the growth and modification of stem cells. Additionally, titanium surfaces previously polarized under potenciostatic conditions were investigated by SEM. The aim of this research work was to study the effects of electrolyte composition on microstructural feature and vertical alignment of TiO2.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hidroretentor polymer doses (hydrogel) on productivity and quality of irrigated radish, via surface and subsurface drip. The treatments consisted of two positions of installation of gotejadoras lines, surface and subsurface and six hidroretentor polymer doses (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 g.m2) in a Hapludox. The experiment was conducted in two crop cycles in the period from October to November 2013 and April-May 2014, in the area of Irrigation and Drainage, the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences (FCA) of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD) in Dourados-MS. The experimental design was a randomized block in split plot with five repetitions. At 33 days after sowing (DAS) harvest was performed and evaluated the productivity parameters: number of leaves (leaves.plant-1), root diameter (mm), length of shoot and root (cm) fresh weight of shoot and root (g), dry weight of shoot and root (g). And quality parameters: pH, and total soluble solids (° Brix) in the roots, firmness and acidity. All variables were subjected to analysis of variance by F test and applied to source of variation polymer doses hidroretentor comparison using regression model. It was found that the production of radish roots, was influenced by the position of drip hoses, and the irrigation surface drip was statistically superior to subsurface drip to the number of leaves and fresh root mass in the first cycle (October / November) and shoot length in the second growing season (April / May). With respect to hidroretentor polymer doses, it can be concluded that radish culture responded significantly doses in two cycles of cultivation.

Dermatophytes are unique in their ability to utilize keratin as a substrate, and this makes them the commonest cause of superficial skin, hair, and nail infection worldwide. They comprise three genera and more than 30 species, and species have evolved to be anthropophilic, zoophilic, or geophilic. Infection is acquired by contact with a source, and on skin is known as ringworm because a circular lesion with a raised scaling edge may form. Diagnosis requires microscopic examination of tissue and culture to identify the pathogen. Management of infection includes identifying the source to prevent reinfection.

Resumen
Moral Development and Reality explores the nature of morality, moral development, social behavior, and human connection. By comparing, contrasting, and going beyond the prominent theories mainly of Lawrence Kohlberg, Martin Hoffman, and Jonathan Haidt, the author addresses fundamental questions: What is morality, and how broad is the moral domain? Can we speak of moral development (Kohlberg, Hoffman), or is morality entirely relative to diverse cultures (Haidt)? What are the sources of moral motivation? What factors account for prosocial behavior? What are the typical social perspective-taking limitations of antisocial youths, and how can those limitations be remedied? Does moral development, including moments of moral inspiration, reflect a deeper reality? Exploring these questions elucidates the full range of moral development, from superficial perception to a deeper understanding and feeling. Included are foundations of morality and moral motivation; biology, social intuitions, and culture; social perspective-taking and development; the stage construct and developmental delay; moral exemplars and moral identity; cognitive distortions, social skills deficiencies, and cognitive behavioral interventions or moral education; and, finally, near-death experiences and the underpinnings of the social and moral world.

Resumen
As the integrationist civil rights movement took shape, Attucks became one of the most prominent black figures to enter elementary and secondary school curricula and textbooks. In most mainstream texts he became merely a token black presence, yet some white commentators took issue with even this superficial elevation to the status of Revolutionary patriot, reviving the contention that Attucks was no more than a rabble-rousing ruffian. Meanwhile, black writers characterized him as everything from a peaceful integrationist to an Afrocentric rebel to a sellout Uncle Tom. Attucks was now more present than ever in the nation’s public schools and popular culture, but widespread disagreement remained regarding his status as a national hero to be honored by all, an embodiment of race pride, a symbol of violence and disorder, or an irrelevant nobody who should be forgotten.

Resumen
Dermatophytes are highly specialized pathogenic fungi which are the most common agents of superficial mycoses. These fungi grow exclusively in the stratum corneum, nails or hair utilising them as sole nitrogen and carbon sources. Dermatophyte species are recognized and classified as antropophilic, zoophilic, or geophilic, depending on their major reservoir in nature (humans, animals, and soil, respectively). Zoophilic dermatophytes may result in zoonoses when humans are exposed to these organisms and dermatophytosis is considered to be one of the most common zoonotic diseases. The majority of zoonotic dermatophytoses are caused by four species: Microsporum canis (usually derived from pet animals, particularly cats and dogs), Trichophyton verrucosum (usually derived from cattle), Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii (usually derived from cats and dogs) and Arthroderma benhamiae (usually derived from guinea-pigs). Infection results most often from direct contact with an infected animal, but may be also acquired indirectly through contact with a contaminated environment. While clinical disease is rarely serious, the lesions can result in disfigurement and pain. Diagnosis is based on history, clinical appearance and diagnostic procedures, e.g. direct microscopic examination of scales, hair or nail and fungal culture. Specific treatment is generally required to resolve lesions, and this may be prolonged depending on the fungal species and the host status. Identifying animals as the source of infection for people can help in the prevention of recurrence or new infections, especially in children, by adequately treating affected pets and their environments. Immunoprophylaxis is an attractive means of controlling infection in animals, and the development and widespread use of efficacious T. verrucosum vaccines in certain countries has already proved valuable in the management of cattle ringworm.

Resumen
AbstractOver the past two decades, prominent researchers such as Greenhalgh [1], Plsek [2], Leykum [3], Lanham [4], Petticrew [5] and Hawe [6, 7] and their colleagues and teams have promoted using complexity theory to describe and analyse the various dimensions of healthcare organisation [8–12]. Internationally, in parallel, governments have recognised the need to ‘think differently’ about healthcare policy and service delivery, but without much traction on how that might be done and what it might mean. Nevertheless, it has now become more common—but by no means universal—to apply a complexity lens to understanding healthcare services and to improving them. This involves greater appreciation of elaborate, intricate, multi-faceted care networks, healthcare ecosystems, layered parts in composite settings, contextual differences across care settings, clinical cultures, multi-agent environments, and the convoluted, challenging, wicked problems [13] these systems throw up. However, with some relatively limited exceptions, the quality and safety fields’ interest in complexity has, to date, been largely superficial, both theoretically and empirically [1].

Resumen
AbstractIn higher education, internationalization is often seen as an exclusively positive development, even though there has been increased critique. This critique concerns a superficial understanding of internationalization as copying what globally successful universities do, thus ignoring local or national needs. But it is also related to the danger of confusing internationalization with Anglo-Americanization, in general and in various fields such as music education. Therefore, an investigation of what internationalization is with regard to music education and how it could look differently is much needed. This chapter critically analyzes internationalization in music education. At the core is the question of how internationalizing music education can be shaped in a way that overcomes hidden structures of hegemony. This chapter envisions a culturally sensitive internationalization of music education which acknowledges various teaching and research cultures. A framework, suggesting conceptual categories such as educational transfer or global knowledge production, can facilitate the formation of a united, yet diverse, global music education community. Additionally, selected concepts of community are presented that can be models for what a culturally sensitive international music education community could look like.

Resumen
Two of the most difficult obstacles in intercultural communication is the fear of others' norms, which we call “xenoprotypophobia,” and emotional attachment to one's own norms. As these two affective internal sources of information are difficult to distance oneself from, most people know about other countries very superficially, which creates misunderstandings. As culture is defined as a collection of specific solutions to universal problems, superficial knowledge about others' customs emphasizes their strange character, whereas going in depth to understand why these practices are positive for the person lets us discover the foundations of universal values, such as respect for other people or society, and thus develop the dynamic competence of diversity and inclusion.

Resumen
Chapter Two turns to reality television, exploring three theories of emotion that explain the rise of this televisual genre in the wake of 9/11. A study of the 2000-2010 programming schedule reveals the cultural anxieties with which producers and viewers of these shows (dis)engage. Although often considered superficial, lowbrow entertainment products meant primarily for escapist purposes, this essay argues that reality television programs grapple with important societal concerns: surveillance culture and privacy rights; the pressure of identity performance in the social media era; and shifting social, domestic, and familial expectations for men and women.

Resumen
This chapter contextualizes the study in current debates on the effects of norm diffusion. Research intellectually influenced by world polity theory projects an increasing similarity of regional organizations as a result of two concurring processes: the promotion of the European model of regional integration by the EU and the model’s imitation by other regional organizations. Highlighting diversity, this book takes a different perspective. It argues that world polity theory overemphasizes structural similarities and underestimates cultural differences, thus lacking context sensitivity. By grounding the research in Eisenstadt’s “multiple modernities” paradigm, the chapter argues that the belief in only one modernity is a myth and that modern institutions are socially and culturally embedded. As culture is diverse and path dependent, terminological and organizational similarities tend to be superficial and often conceal extant normative underpinnings, which do not match the seemingly appropriated model of regional integration.

Resumen
The paper presented here focuses on the idea of interpreting the digital culture as an image of the material culture rather than a mere copy of it. First of all, we should ask ourselves what an image really is; it is in investigating its deep meaning, which is often devalued due to the enormous dissemination of void images, that we can overcome the superficial concept of the digital as a digitalised copy. The description of an archaeological artifact cannot prescind from its physical and material appearance, but has to go further towards its profound nature and meaning. Considering the so-called aura of archaeological and artistic objects as an engagement between the hic et nunc of the object and the hic et nunc of the observer it will be possible to go beyond in the comprehension of the agency of the objects. Moreover, it is necessary to consider technology as a way through which objects could reveal themselves in a process of ἀλήθεια and not just a tool with the only scope of showing itself and its capacities. Considering digital copies as images could yield compelling challenges: every archaeological object, at any scale from the very little to the very big, has its own lost Umwelt: a way of being entangled in the world in which it was created. Probably, no answer will be provided within this paper, but suggestions to move towards an ontology of digital objects and their relationship with virtual realm.

Resumen
The development of a new way for in vitro three-dimensional (3D) cell culture is critical for medicine to well understand cell/tissue behavior. Despite its importance, it is not easy to achieve 3D cell culture because the superficial seeding of cells on the surface of scaffolds causes tissue necrosis in the central part of scaffolds. To solve this issue, we explored an alternative cell seeding procedures based on magnetized cell guiding. Taking advantage of the novel superparamagnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), obtained by doping hydroxyapatite (HA) with Fe ions in ideal condition aimed at limiting the formation of poorly tolerated magnetic secondary phase (i.e. Fe3 O4), we magnetized cells without affect cell behavior. Moreover applying a low external magnetic field, we were able to remote control cell migration demonstrating that magnetic cells were obtained and move them in a 3D construct. This study showed the great potential of cell remote control by external magnetic field as tool for medicine applications.

Resumen
Limitations associated with the use of autologous chondrocytes (CH) for cartilage tissue engineering beget the need for alternative cell sources. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are clinically attractive due to their ability to undergo chondrogenesis in three-dimensional culture [1,2]; however, when compared to CH, MSC fail to develop functional equivalence [2,3]. We have previously shown a marked depth-dependence in local equilibrium modulus of MSC-laden gels, with the superficial zones (where maximal media exchange occurs) considerably stiffer than regions removed from nutrient supply (center and bottom of construct); less dramatic depth-dependence was observed in CH-laden gels [4]. Similarly, other studies have shown depth-dependent properties in CH-laden gels with the construct edge generally stiffer than the center [5]. Given this apparent influence of nutrient supply, the objective of the current study was to assess the impact of dynamic culture (via orbital shaking) on the development of depth-dependent mechanical properties in both MSC and CH-laden hydrogels. Furthermore, we assessed cell viability and matrix content throughout the construct depth to determine the mechanism by which this depth-dependency arises. We hypothesized that improved nutrient transport would reduce construct inhomogeneity (particularly for MSC-laden constructs) and improve bulk mechanical properties.

Resumen
Due to their better operational advantages, such as good scalability, operational flexibility, high mass and heat transfer characteristics, homogenous shear stress, good mixing and better control over fluid circulation, airlift column photobioreactors (PBR) have become a promising design alternative for microalgae culture, among bubble column and other types of photobioreactors. The good hydrodynamic environment for fragile microorganisms in airlift columns have led to numerous investigations in order to understand the hydrodynamic phenomena of multiphase flow, particularly gas-liquid, inside this type of PBR. In the present paper, a CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics) simulation in CFX, ANSYS Inc. 11.0, is developed following a multiphase flow model with an Eulerian-Eulerian approach. For evaluating turbulence, the modified k–ε model is chosen. Gas holdup, gas superficial velocity and liquid velocity profiles for different heights column are obtained by varying air volumetric flow rates at 2, 5 and 8 L/min. Also gas holdup, gas superficial velocity and liquid velocity contours are obtained for a sequence of five step times. An experimental video validation to compare the multiphase flow behavior has been made with a high-resolution video camera. The experiments are carried out by using an airlift column photobioreactor with air supply by a porous sparger. The profiles of the hydrodynamic variables made for 5 different column heights show that the trends of gas holdup and gas superficial velocity are very similar and do not depend on the variation of inlet air flow. For the liquid velocity profiles, the trends don’t show the same behavior, the profiles at lower heights are off-centered and less symmetric and the maximum velocities are reached at h = 0.2 m. The time sequences with the variable contours are made to enhance the visualization and understanding of the hydrodynamic behavior, especially when air supply begins and the bubble plume starts to form.

Resumen
Mechanical loading of chondrocytes in isolation [1] and of articular cartilage in culture [2] has been reported to be a potent regulator of chondrocyte metabolism. Experimental studies have related tissue-level and cell-level strains in mechanically loaded cartilage explants [3], but cannot be readily extended to address more physiologic loading cases. Numerical models, which might address this need, have primarily been axisymmetric [4, 5] or two-dimensional [6] and have idealized chondrocyte geometry. Given the complexity of the mechanism of the load transfer between the tissue and cell, however, there remains a lack of information regarding the in vivo level of cell stresses and strains. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a multiscale experimental/numerical approach to calibrate a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of a chondrocyte based on experimentally derived chondrocyte morphology and deformation data. The method was than applied to determine the modulus of a chondrocyte located in the superficial zone.
