The aim of the study: to assess the influence of genetic and environmental factors using twin studies and evaluate the associations of SCARB1 gene variants (rs11057841) with AMD and MPOD. Material and methods: a total of 108 healthy twins (56 MZ and 52 DZ twins) were tested in this study. The MPOD was measured using the one-wavelength reflectometry method. Fundus reflectance (Visucam 500, reflectance of a single 460 nm wavelength) was used to measure the MPOD levels, MPOD parameters including max and mean optical density (OD), and area and volume. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results: we detected a positive correlation of MPOD in the right and left eyes in MZ twin pairs (r = 0.830 and r = 0.860, respectively) (p < 0.0001) and a negative correlation of MPOD in the right and left eyes in DZ twin pairs (r = 0.314 and r = 0.408, respectively) (p < 0.05). The study was able to identify statistically significant differences in mean MPOD values in the right and left eyes between subjects with a wild-type CC genotype and a CT genotype with a risk allele. A decrease in the mean MPOD value was observed in group II with a CT genotype (0.110 d.u.) compared with the CC genotype (0.117 d.u.) in the right eye (p = 0.037) and in the left eye with a CT genotype (0.109 d.u.) compared with a CC genotype in the subjects (0.114 d.u.) (p = 0.038). In the right eye, in group II (0.101–0.128 d.u.), those with a CT genotype (n = 6) with one risk allele had a statistically significantly lower (0.110 d.u.) mean average MPOD value compared with those with a wild-type CC genotype (n = 25) (0.117 d.u.) (p = 0.037). Conclusion: this twin study showed a strong heritability of the retina pigment, which was 86% prevalent in Lithuania. Individuals with a CT genotype of the SCARB1 rs11057841 with a risk allele had statistically significantly lower mean MPOD values in both eyes compared to subjects with a wild-type CC genotype.

Autosomal dominant polycystic disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent monogenic kidney disease. It causes progressive renal failure, endothelial dysfunction, and hypertension, all of which are strictly linked to oxidative stress (OxSt). Treatment with tolvaptan is known to slow the renal deterioration rate, but not all the molecular mechanisms involved in this effect are well-established. We evaluated the OxSt state in untreated ADPKD patients compared to that in tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients and healthy subjects. OxSt was assessed in nine patients for each group in terms of mononuclear cell p22phox protein expression, NADPH oxidase key subunit, MYPT-1 phosphorylation state, marker of Rho kinase activity (Western blot) and heme oxygenase (HO)-1, induced and protective against OxSt (ELISA). p22phox protein expression was higher in untreated ADPKD patients compared to treated patients and controls: 1.42 ± 0.11 vs. 0.86 ± 0.15 d.u., p = 0.015, vs. 0.53 ± 0.11 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively. The same was observed for phosphorylated MYPT-1: 0.96 ± 0.28 vs. 0.68 ± 0.09 d.u., p = 0.013 and vs. 0.47 ± 0.13 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively, while the HO-1 expression of untreated patients was significantly lower compared to that of treated patients and controls: 5.33 ± 3.34 vs. 2.08 ± 0.79 ng/mL, p = 0.012, vs. 1.97 ± 1.22 ng/mL, p = 0.012, respectively. Tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients have reduced OxSt levels compared to untreated patients. This effect may contribute to the slowing of renal function loss observed with tolvaptan treatment.

<p>Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases with serious sequelae. Every year, 120–500 amputations are performed per 1 million people worldwide. The severe consequences of amputation include the mental trauma caused by loss of a limb, disability and a real risk of death for the patient, since the mortality rate associated with the development of gangrene remains extremely high. PAD is most frequently located in the femoral-popliteal segment, which is the longest vascular segment in the human body. Over the past decade, the endovascular approach has become the main therapeutic strategy for PAD, given its lower risk of complications and comparable efficacy to open interventions. Femoral-popliteal stenting provides advantages over balloon angioplasty, preventing vessel wall recoil and providing necessary frame support.<br />This review aims to describe the latest progress of endovascular surgery for the treatment of femoral-popliteal artery disease and to discuss its limitations.<br />The introduction of nitinol stents and new drug coated stents into clinical practice has improved the results of femoral-popliteal endovascular treatment. Despite this, stent failure remains a pressing problem that significantly impacts the results of endovascular treatment of atherosclerotic lesions of lower limb arteries.</p><p>Received 6 June 2019. <p><strong>Background.</strong> Ischaemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Selective intracarotid cerebral hypothermia is one of the promising methods to prevent ischaemic stroke. However, currently available studies do not allow us to conclude the effectiveness of applying this method in humans and assess its effect on the system temperature.</p><p><strong>Aim.</strong> To investigate the effect of selective intracarotid cerebral hypothermia on the size of ischaemic stroke in large pigs, determining the optimal period of hypothermia and the severity of the effects of intracarotid hypothermia on the system temperature.</p><p><strong>Methods.</strong> The study was conducted on mini-pigs weighing 30–70 kg and included two stages. During the first stage, pigs were divided into two groups: control (n = 4) and intracarotid hypothermia for 3 h, exciting periods before and after reperfusion (n = 2). During the second stage, animals were also divided into two groups: hypothermia group within 1.5 h before reperfusion (n = 2) and hypothermia group within 1.5 h after reperfusion (n = 2). The technique for modelling ischaemic stroke was the same as in all groups and consisted of frontotemporal craniotomy and compression of the middle cerebral artery for 3 h. Intracarotid hypothermia was performed by infusing + 4 °C NaCl solution in the ascending pharyngeal artery. At 48 h after starting the experiment, a brain magnetic resonance imaging scan was performed to determine the size of the stroke.</p><p><strong>Results.</strong> The mean size of the stroke focusing in the control group was 10.75%, in the hypothermia group before reperfusion (10.95%) and in the hypothermia group after reperfusion (1.65%) of the volume of the cerebral hemisphere. The stroke size in the hypothermia group for 3 h could not be determined due to complications that developed in animals intraoperatively and postoperatively. The effect of intracarotid hypothermia on the systemic temperature in an animal weighing 65 kg was 0.4 °C.</p><p><strong>Conclusion.</strong> Based on the study results, a marked decrease in the focus of ischaemic stroke was found with the use of intracarotid hypothermia within 1.5 h after reperfusion. Intracarotid hypothermia was found to do not have a pronounced effect on the system temperature.</p><p>Received 2 May 2020. Revised 20 May 2020. N.° 038-2020, para finalmente concluir si la misma es aplicable al contrato de trabajo.
 In this paper, the author analyzes the institution of the excessive onerousness of the provision and the hardship theory in labor relations, this in the context of the economic crisis generated by the Coronavirus – COVID-19 pandemic, the health emergency and the state of emergency, as well as its manifestations in ordinary labor regulations and in D.U. N.° 038-2020, to finally conclude if it is applicable to the employment contract.

N° 020-2020, a efectos de no presentar la fianza bancaria y/o patrimonial en los casos en que el Estado sea la parte afectada con la medida cautelar, trasgrediendo la citada norma con rango de Ley, así como los criterios de la Corte Suprema de Justicia de la República, como del Tribunal Constitucional.

The paper contains the results of daily monitoring of the ozone layer condition and level of ultraviolet irradiation within the territory of Ukraine in 2018. The analysis was carried out using the values of total ozone content measured by a satellite device Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and estimated ultraviolet values / ultraviolet index. The monitoring was implemented for a regular grid with 1̊ spatial resolution and separately for grid nodes matching the geographic grids of Ukrainian administrative centres. Most of the year total ozone values slightly differed from average long-term values and varied from 270 to 370 Dobson units (D.u.). The paper defines and establishes the reasons for two positive ozone anomalies for the period from February, 24 to March, 4 which resulted in two independent processes of ozone-rich air masses inflow from north. Advective air masses were characterized by high ozone content, which was typical for cold season. First air inflow lasted from February, 24 till February, 26 and caused ozone content increase over the north-western part of Ukraine to 490 D.u. The second inflow over the northern and western parts of Ukraine which lasted from February, 28 to March, 4 caused ozone content increase to 500 D.u. Ozone layer instability over the territory of Ukraine observed from January till April was replaced by slight ozone field variations. From May until the end of the year maximum deviations from average values did not exceed 0.5σ by absolute values. It was established that minimum and maximum ranges of ozone content values constantly changed, however, lower values were observed mainly over the eastern and south-eastern regions. Observations indicated the total ozone spread increase which is typical for seasonal increase of concentrations. Stability of ozone layer total values during the most of the year and absence of significant negative deviations led to ultraviolet index not exceeding 7. In summer, with the highest solar irradiance near the earth's surface, stable ozone content varying within average long-term values not more than by 0.2σ, prevented dangerous ultraviolet index values exceed. Therefore, no high or extremely high ultraviolet irradiation values were observed during the year.

The study presents the results of analysis of spatiotemporal distribution of updated total ozone climate normals for the period of 1991–2020. It analyzes the changes since the last total ozone climate normals estimate conducted for the period of 1981–2010. The daily data retrieved using TOMS and OMI satellite instruments over the territory of Ukraine allowed calculation of multiyear average values, climate normals for each day of the year, amplitudes, phases and determination coefficients for total ozone seasonal variations. Use of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data allowed establishment of the relation between total ozone and meridional wind changes in the lower stratosphere. The research shows the existence of the regions with higher/lower total ozone content that are not in line with the characteristics of latitudinal distribution. They are formed due to more frequent recurrence of air advection with ozone content that is not typical for the Ukrainian territory, mostly from January to March. The study describes a typical temporal distribution of the total ozone climate normals varying from 285 to 375 Dobson units (D.u.) and analyzes the statistic patterns of deviations distribution and recurrence of extremely high/low total ozone content. The paper emphasizes a small variation of total ozone over the territory of Ukraine. The authors also researched the features of spatial distribution of seasonal variation amplitudes varying within the range of 42–46 D.u. and the specifics of maximum values periods observed from 19 to 30 of March, depending on a region. It was established that, since the previous update of the climate normals, the total ozone decreased for all months with its maximum decrease of about 8 D.u. in winter. However, no increase of recurrence of ultraviolet radiation high levels was observed. Total ozone changes are mainly associated with shifts of meridional wind values to negative ones. This process indicates the increase of recurrence of air advection from the north. The paper also emphasizes the complexness of total ozone changes during the period of research and the lack of consistency of such changes with the circulation factor of summer months.

This thesis began by studying how a temporary event could create permanent architecture and how that architecture could change an urban lifestyle. I chose the Olympics as the event and proposed that they be held in Washington D.C., a city of international prominence with a rich design history but a city that hasn't had a large scale urban redevelopment plan in over a century. I focused on the city east of the Capitol as I wanted to extend the monumental core created in the McMillan plan. I researched baroque design, Olympic planning, and even the original L'Enfant plan. The result of this research was unearthing some of the original L'Enfant design elements and incorporating them into a 21st century city by blending new design issues with the idea of a city designed around radial vistas with magnificent termini. I focused on two sites, the Olympic Torch and the Olympic Stadium. The Torch is situated as a terminus on a site that was intended to be mile marker zero for the country. Its design and importance make it a monument while still not impeding the views. The stadium was created to serve as a stadium for the people, allowing pedestrians outside to view and interact with the event inside. It is sunken so as not to obstruct views but it is spanned by arches that pierce the cityscape signifying its monumentality and appropriately ending the monumental axis started with the Lincoln Memorial on the western edge of the city.<br>Master of Architecture

O presente trabalho tem por objetivos: em primeiro lugar, arrolar, traduzir e analisar epigramas de Marcial em que a mulher é objeto de invectiva; em segundo lugar, visa a rastrear, na tradição anterior ao poeta, o tema da misoginia, desde Hesíodo, no célebre episódio de Pandora (Teogonia, vv. 570- 612), passando pelos poetas iâmbicos arcaicos (Arquíloco, Hipônax e Semônides), até o uso que poetas latinos, como Catulo, Horácio e Juvenal, fizeram do tema, entendido agora como tópos. Em terceiro lugar, o presente trabalho pretende observar de que maneira o epigrama, ou melhor, sua possibilidade invectiva, se apropriou da misoginia, adequando-a às características principais do gênero, a saber, brevidade e agudeza, e, finalmente, tentar demonstrar que o vitupério a mulheres em Marcial é regulado e percebido mediante práticas retóricas (como os progymnásmata) e alguns trópoi (como a écfrase), que à época do poeta participavam da formação educacional do cidadão. Nesse sentido, pretendemos estudar particularmente as relações que a invectiva mantém, nos epigramas de Marcial, com a construção de imagens viciosas de mulher e suas relações com o gênero epidítico.<br>The aims of the present work are first, to list, translate and analyse Martial\'s epigrams in which women are the object of invective; second, to try to investigate, in the former tradition, the theme of misogyny, both in Greece (from Hesiod, in the celebrated episode of Pandora (Teogony, vv. 570-612), to the archaic iambic poets, Archilochus, Hipponax and Semonides), and in Rome (how misogyny, as a tópos, is treatead by Catullus, Horace and Juvenal). In the third place, the present research intends to study in what manner epigram, or more precisely, its vituperative possibility, appropriated the theme of misogyny, adapting it to the main characteristics of the genre, such as conciseness and acuteness. Finally, we attempt to demonstrate that the vituperation against women, in Martial, is regulated and perceived through various rhetorical practices (such as the progymnásmata) and trópoi (such as ekphrasis) that at the poet\'s time were an important part of the citizen\'s education. Therein, we intend to study, in particular, the analogies that the invective maintain, in Martial\'s epigrams, non only with the construction of images in which women are corrupted, but also with the relationship between these images and the epidictic genre.

Cette étude porte sur la modélisation numérique du creusement de tunnels à l'aide de boucliers a front pressurise et notamment sur l'adaptation de la méthode du ramollissement, initialement mise au point pour le calcul, en coupe bidimensionnelle, de tunnels creuses à l'aide de procédés non mécanisés. La thèse est composée de 8 chapitres et comprend une étude bibliographique concernant le calcul des ouvrages souterrains, une analyse de la réponse du terrain a une pressurisation du front de taille à partir des calculs axisymétriques, la mise au point d'une méthode permettant de reproduire, dans un calcul plan, en coupe transversale, les effets mis en évidence en conditions axisymétriques et l'application de cette méthode a l'analyse d'un ouvrage instrumente dans le département du val de marne. Cet ouvrage a été équipe d'inclinomètres et d'extensomètres installes dans le terrain, ainsi que de témoins à cordes vibrantes disposes dans un anneau de revêtement. Les mesures ont permis d'analyser la réponse du massif encaissant et de l'ouvrage de soutènement au cours des différentes étapes de creusements. Le creusement de cet ouvrage a été simule à l'aide de la méthode de calcul développée dans le cadre de ce travail et les résultats de calculs confrontes a ceux donnes par les mesures

Resumen
Lawrence's work has almost invevitably been read as an aesthetic production whereby one must eventually agree or disagree with his vision of "reality". Those who assume a formalist standard of taste often find that Lawrence "loses control" of his material; those who offer ideological apologies for his work argue that disruptions in the aesthetic plane are representative of an exploratory genius, often seen as the outstanding characteristic of literary modernism. Both approaches, explicitly or otherwise , rely on the ultimate sanction of the achieved image, transmuted by the author always in control of his material. Yet anyone who reads Lawrence with an eye to to what the "tale" says in addition to what the "teller" claims discovers that Lawrence is not in full control of his material, thought it cannot simply be argued, on aesthetic or linguistic criteria, that he is out of control. Rather, there exists a "third" state whereby Lawrence both writes and is written, gives us a message with one hand, yet retracts, as it were, with the other. Because this double-move is preeminently suited to the language of fiction, and because it appears in Lawrence's fiction with the greatest versatility and incisiveness, this dissertation analyzes six of his novels for their rhetorical significance, understood as both an organization of tropes and figures and as a system of persuasive doctrine. A new definition for allegory is proposed, the introductions of thematic and structural "blanks" is examined, and a spread of narrative delays are identified and discussed, all concerned with the central problem of writing novels that direct themselves to the resurrection of a pre-linguistic universe, yet ironically depend more and more upon writing to bring this about. Ideas drawn from Continental philosophy and recent critical theory are incorporated for support and instruction. Attention is also focused on Lawrence's revision processes, often with specific emphasis on unpublished manuscript material.

Thesis (DPhil (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLSIH ABSTRACT: This study is a political biography of D.F. Malan (1874–1959), the first of the apartheid-era Prime Ministers, and covers the years 1874 to 1954, when Malan retired from politics. It endeavours to provide a warts-and-all account of D.F. Malan which challenges prevalent myths and stereotypes surrounding his public persona and his political orientation. While the overwhelming focus is on Malan’s political career, special attention is paid to his personal life in order to paint a multi-faceted picture of his character. The biography is written in the form of a seamless narrative and employs a literary style of writing. It is based on archival research which utilised Malan’s private collection, as well as the private collections of his Nationalist contemporaries. Malan takes the centre stage at all times, as the biography focuses on his perceptions and experiences. Malan’s views regarding Afrikaner nationalism, which was his foremost political priority, are described, and are related to his views of British imperialism as well as other ideologies such as communism and totalitarianism. This study demonstrates that there is a notable link between Malan’s perceptions of race relations and his concerns about the poor white problem. It reveals that Malan’s racial policy was, to some extent, fluid, as were his views on South Africa’s constitutional position. Debates about South Africa’s links to Britain and the nature of the envisioned republic preoccupied Afrikaner nationalists throughout the first half of the twentieth century – and served as an outlet for regional and generational tensions within the movement. Malan’s clashes with nationalists such as Tielman Roos, J.B.M. Hertzog and J.G. Strijdom are highlighted as an indication of the internecine power struggles within the National Party (NP). By emphasising these complexities, this study seeks to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the South African past.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is politieke biografie van D.F. Malan (1874–1959), die eerste van die apartheid-era Eerste Ministers, en dek die jare 1874 tot 1954, toe Malan uit die politiek getree het. Dit poog om onversuikerde beeld van Malan te skets wat heersende mites en stereotipes aangaande sy openbare beeld en sy benadering tot die politiek uitdaag. Die fokus is hoofsaaklik op Malan se politieke loopbaan, maar besondere aandag word aan sy private lewe geskenk om sodoende veelsydige portret van sy karakter te skilder. Die biografie is in die vorm van naatlose narratief geskryf en maak van literêre skryfstyl gebruik. Dit is gebaseer op argivale navorsing, waartydens daar van D.F. Malan se privaat versameling gebruik gemaak is, sowel as die privaat versamelings van sy tydgenote. Malan is ten alle tye die sentrale figuur en die biografie fokus op sy persepsies en ervarings. Malan se denke oor Afrikaner nasionalisme, wat sy vernaamste prioriteit was, word beskryf en in verband gebring met sy opinie van Britse imperialisme, sowel as ander ideologieë soos kommunisme en totalitarisme. Die studie wys op die verband tussen Malan se denke oor rasseverhoudinge en sy besorgdheid oor die armblanke vraagstuk. Dit dui daarop dat Malan se rassebeleid tot sekere mate vloeibaar was. Dit was ook die geval met sy benadering tot Suid-Afrika se konstitusionele posisie. Afrikaner nasionaliste het tydens die eerste helfte van die twintigste eeu baie aandag geskenk aan debatte oor Suid-Afrika se verhouding tot Brittanje en die aard van die voorgenome republiek. Dit was tot mate weerligafleier vir reeds bestaande spanning tussen die onderskeie streke en generasies. Malan se botsings met nasionaliste soos Tielman Roos, J.B.M. Hertzog en J.G. Strijdom word belig as aanduiding van die diepgewortelde magstryd binne die Nasionale Party (NP). Deur op hierdie kompleksiteite klem te lê, poog die studie om bydrae te lewer tot meer genuanseerde begrip van die Suid-Afrikaanse verlede.

Lipofuscin fluorescence measurements (Delori, 1992) in the fovea of normal subjects and of patients with age-related macular degeneration are affected by macular pigment (MP) absorption. Measurements of MP density are needed to correct the fluorescence data, but also to study the role of this pigment in aging and disease. MP densities have been measured by reflectometry and psychophysics (see Pease et al, 1987 for a literature survey): reflectometry appears to underestimate the MP density (0.1-0.2 D.U, single pass) compared to psychophysical estimates (0.4-0.8 D.U.). In this report we introduce a novel method for MP density determination, based on fundus fluorophotometry, and compare the results of this technique with those obtained by reflectometry.

Heterodyne detection of laser radar signals is much more sensitive than other non-coherent method. The theory and technology of heterodyne detection are being well developed. In 1985, R. J. Keyes proposed the autodyne detection in a transmission-reception coherent laser radar system with a single-frequency laser.[1] Furhter theoretical and experimenatl efforts were made by D.U. Flukiger et al in visible region in 1987.[2] In 1989, Pi Mingjia proposed a new method of coherent laser radar detect ion, the two-frequency autodyne(TFAD) detection.[3]

Det har været et centralt spørgsmål for os i projektet Teaching platform for developing and automatically tracking early stage literacy skills (ATEL, 2018-2023). Projektet er tværinstitutionelt og er blevet gennemført af forskere fra DPU, Aarhus Universitet, Nationalt Videncenter for Læsning og DTU i samarbejde med WriteReader, der har udviklet app’en Skriv og læs. I projektet har vi også samarbejdet med alle skoler i Svendborg Kommune samt enkelte skoler i Odense Kommune.

Review question / Objective: A significant amount of research has been conducted to detect and recognize diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) using computer vision methods, but there are still a number of challenges. DFUs detection frameworks based on machine learning/deep learning lack systematic reviews. With Machine Learning (ML) and Deep learning (DL), you can improve care for individuals at risk for DFUs, identify and synthesize evidence about its use in interventional care and management of DFUs, and suggest future research directions. Information sources: A thorough search of electronic databases such as Science Direct, PubMed (MIDLINE), arXiv.org, MDPI, Nature, Google Scholar, Scopus and Wiley Online Library was conducted to identify and select the literature for this study (January 2010-January 01, 2023). It was based on the most popular image-based diagnosis targets in DFu such as segmentation, detection and classification. Various keywords were used during the identification process, including artificial intelligence in DFu, deep learning, machine learning, ANNs, CNNs, DFu detection, DFu segmentation, DFu classification, and computer-aided diagnosis.
