Resumen
Topics and themes become the key to open the insights of both theoretical and practical knowledge in architectural design; a concept in architectural design related issue as well. Ideally, the students of architecture do researches to generate new design ideas or proper design solutions. Prior to doing researches, it is necessary for them to find out how far the process of searches – literature review and application of topics and themes in the architectural design – have been done. This study was conducted with descriptive approach through case studies. The analysis unit is the final students of design studio class and students of the final project in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Binus University - Jakarta. The Results of the study illustrate that the architecture students of Binus University know and learn about the architecture research. However, they need the efforts to improve research skills, accurate literature searches, as well as exercise and evaluation of the implementation of topic-themes that started to be studied by students from the mid-level to theadvance-level. The results of this study will be inputs to support architectural design learning based on architectural research at the Department of Architecture, especially in Binus University.

The article examines the trends in modern architecture, outlined in the studies of architectural critic Alejandro Zaera-Polo and his team. The tool they’ve created was named ‘Interactive Map of Modern Architecture’. Charles Jencks’s ‘Evolutionary Tree’ (diagram of 20th-century architecture) had a significant influence on this tool. The functionality of Zaera-Polo’s map has been examined for five years by the author of this article while tutoring future architects at the Department of Architectural Environment Design at Lviv Polytechnic National University. These examinations allowed us to formulate a number of proposals to improve both - the structure of this map and the methodology of its creation.

Resumen
Contemporary architectural design processes show a high degree of complexity: While planners try to fulfill their client’s expectations, they are confronted with a set of constraints and requirements. These include legal constraints such as different building codes, minimum requirements of thermal, acoustical and energy-related indicators as well as structural integrity. In many planning processes, however, the minimum requirements are even less stringent than self-defined expectations. These could - for instance - include a small environmental footprint of the suggested building materials, near zero heating demand, etc. Furthermore, the majority of architectural design processes face a high level of time and cost pressure. Little is known about the time and effort distribution to different processes within such planning processes. These could include consultation with administrative bodies or specific technical planners, performing computational analyses, sketching conceptional options or layouting final designs. In this context, the present contribution explores the time and effort distribution regarding different tasks within the design process in the framework of two design studios. These were conducted with graduate architectural students of the TU Vienna in 2014 and 2015. The concept of these design studios focused on a realistic emulation of real-world project development processes: Participating students were confronted with different (and evolving) visions of their clients, were asked to perform consultation visits with legal bodies of the Viennese building regulation department, and to monitor their time effort for different tasks. These tasks were defined prior to the design studios and allowed for rather detailed classification of different design steps. The two design studios included a roof top extension of a classical 19th century building in Vienna, and the retrofit and extension of a detached house from the 1930ies. This contribution focuses on the time and effort distribution of the different tasks and explores if a general pattern can be identified and derived from the experiences within these design studios.

Resumen
This paper reflects the shifting understanding of context in a data-based architectural studio. With the school closure in the beginning of the COVID pandemic, the overall learning process is largely conducted online. Big Data becomes an important discourse that provides some benefits and opportunities which transform the design and learning process in an architectural studio, particularly on how students may explore and understand their context. Exploring the works of third-year architectural students in Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia, this paper highlights the ways students capture and organise urban information and construct their intervention contexts. The study points out that time, flow and narrative are key in transforming understanding of context. Based on such three aspects, the data reveals the unseen urban patterns, emerging in the imbalance relationship between user and the environment, the disconnection of urban services, and the hidden variety of urban experience. The study reflects how these urban patterns informs the ways students define and situate themselves in the context, shifting existing ideas of context and its corresponding methodologies in the architectural education.

Resumen
Abstract Drawing on experiences of researching India's architectural history, this article explores the affect generated by architectural archives as a source of knowledge. It traces the affective life of the archives and practices of a singular historical figure: Otto Koenigsberger, the chief architect and town planner of the princely state Mysore, the architect of Jamshedpur (a.k.a. Tatanagar, the “Steel City,” India's first planned industrial town), the first director of housing of the federal government of India, cofounder and director of the Department of Tropical Studies of the Architectural Association in London, and architecture and planning consultant at-large to the United Nations. Arguing that the affective archive has disruptive historiographical potential, the article posits that it exists fundamentally beyond the architectural object and archival documents themselves, and indeed fully in discourse with its users. The article argues for a more expansive and inclusive understanding of what constitutes an archive, designating the “archival habitat” as a place of active scholarly engagement.

Resumen
<p>The ambiguous nature of the word “design” offers up a complex dialectic dialogue for the architectural studio lecturers to impart to their students. Discussing the “design”, more commonly referred to as the programme or scheme, is quite a different beast to the process or design methodologies the students use to create an architectural proposition or “design”. Clarity around this notion of design as both the process, in being design-led, and also as the end result, becomes a necessary task for studio lecturers to inculcate into the student body.<br />This paper aims to navigate through the mire/path of the design methodologies as adopted within architecture studio teaching at second year level within the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Unitec Department of Architecture – by way of using the tried and tested notions of First Insight / Empathy, Preparation, Incubation, Illumination, Verification, with the anticipation that these are the essential tools with which to interface teaching and practice, within the context of a “live build project”.<br />Three years’ worth of case studies of large scale Interdisciplinary and collaborative “live build projects” in Christchurch in conjunction with the Festival of Transitional Architecture (FESTA) are used to demonstrate and investigate the heuristic design processes that are an integral part of a prospective architect’s arsenal of skills. These case studies offered a complex window of tasks, not least that the students were designing in Auckland 1000 km away from the Christchurch sites, and each year posed a different set of problems and clients-related issues. Luxcity 2012 / Canterbury Tales 2013 / CityUps 2014 were the students’ responses to FESTA’s call to rejuvenate the city centre after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and all of which were assembled only for a 24-hour period over Labour Day Weekend.</p>

Abstract. This research is focused on different aspects concerning two types of Tulou: Minnan and Hakka Tulou. Through the analysis of eight case studies, we managed to highlight the relation between typological-functional features and constructive ones aiming to offer a more orderly analysis of distinct models, divided into two substantially different families. Future studies will further analyse the knowledge of these rammed earth buildings by studying the phases of the construction site, conducting architectural surveys on the most important details and investigating the mechanical behaviour of both types. The future goal is the creation of a “Manuale del recupero dei Tulou” (Manual on Tulou restoration) in order to provide a guide for restoration and spread the knowledge about original materials and techniques applied in the construction of these unique rammed earth architectures. The research, which is currently ongoing, has been carried out by the Architecture Department of Roma Tre University in cooperation with Fuzhou University.

Resumen
This research analyses the historically specific formal, signifying structures of architectural conceptualisation through the use of depth models including structuralism and psychoanalysis. As historically specific, the rules of formation of these structures are only variably formulated in their own right. In this context, what has been referred to as a 'positive unconscious' is addressed here as the sine qua non in a discursive formation of architectural knowledge and creative activity. For this reason, this proposal does not concern itself with a meta-methodology or an arborescent structure through which the various elements of its analysis might be seamlessly and uniformly joined and understood. The research coalesces initially on empirical convention: on bUildings, cities, and in a looser sense on the constructed environment; on architecture, that is, which in its own seductive way has sought to encourage us to believe that our understanding of existence is real. What is demonstrated in the constellation of examples chosen for this research is that coherence within the subject's discipline has been established on an enduring conception of architecture as a signifying rather than as an historically developmental, objective, functional, and temporally consistent form of practice.

Resumen
The world is facing two fundamental problems. The first problem is a rapidly increasing demand for energy. The second problem is increasing greenhouse gas emissions that are directly resulting from our energy consumption. The primary greenhouse gas in question here is carbon dioxide produced from the burning of fossil fuels. It has been demonstrated through scientific articles and studies that carbon dioxide is directly linked to rising atmospheric temperatures. Buildings represent a significant percentage of this CO2 production. Many architectural theses and treatises have been written advocating architecture that is more energy efficient and which uses sustainable materials and processes as necessary steps towards solving the global warming crisis. With the threat of global warming looming, everyday architecture must go through a transformation. Sustainable buildings should not be limited to rarefied architectural gems. Instead, sustainable architecture should become a commonplace condition in the built environment. In order to achieve this, we need sustainable architecture that not only addresses the environmental issues but also pays for itself and pays the building owner for taking on such a task. To answer this need, I intend to design a mixed-use multifamily building that exists in the environment as a living system. As all living things, it must function utilizing the resources available in that environment. It must have a practical and economically viable on-site energy production and storage methodology that is environmentally benign and takes advantage of freely available natural resources. It must react to changes in the environment to better manage its resources and it must be able to store resources for later use. Lastly, it should foster sustainable living practices of its occupants. By building in this way, architecture can take on a new role as symbiant rather than parasite in the environment, producing its own pollution free energy and clean water. Each building acts as a life support system for its inhabitants but is also part of a macro scale biosphere. If resources are managed carefully, an exportable energy surplus can be generated representing an economic benefit to the owner. This provides an economic directive to adopt sustainable practices.

The Nuclear Pore Complex (NPC) is a ~50 MDa protein complex that forms the sole conduit for macromolecular transport across the nuclear envelope. It assembles from ~30 proteins, termed nucleoporins or nups, symmetrically arranged about a central 8-fold axis. Some nucleoporins also contribute to other structures or perform diverse other functions. A subset forms a stably-associated core scaffold for the NPC, organized into two large subcomplexes, the Y-complex and the Nic96-complex. Studies using electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography have begun to elucidate the architecture of the NPC scaffold. To better understand the NPC and related proteins, two studies were performed: 1. The crystal structure of the C-terminal a-helical domain of Nup133 in complex with the C terminus of Nup107 revealed (with a prior structure of the N-terminal β-propeller domain of Nup133) the complete structure of Nup133 and its connection to the Y-complex. This contributes to a nearly complete molecular model of the Y-complex. Nup107-Nup133 forms the distal half of the stalk of the Y-complex. Sequence similarity between Nup133 and another nucleoporin, Nup170, was detected, and structural similarity proven by solving the structure of the a-helical domain of Nup170. Nup170 is a member of the Nic96-complex. Similarity between Nup133 and Nup170 suggests that the Y-complex and the Nic96-complex employ the same architectural principles. 2. Four nucleoporins contain an a-helical domain structurally related to the COPII coat protein Sec31. This domain is called the ancestral coatomer element 1 (ACE1). Sec13-Sec31 and Nup84-Nup145C-Sec13 complexes form analogous edge elements for the COPII coat and the NPC. A sequence-based search for other ACE1s identified the COPII accessory protein Sec16. Sec16 and Sec13 were shown to form a 2:2 heterotetramer. A crystal structure of Sec13-Sec16 revealed similarities to the Sec13-Sec31 edge element. Together with other structural and in vivo data, this result suggests that Sec13-Sec16 is a template for the Sec13-Sec31 coat. These studies demonstrate that duplication of multiple classes of architectural proteins occurred in the evolution of the NPC and COPII coat, and support the hypothesis that these systems evolved from a common, ancestral membrane-coating complex.

Resumen
A firm’s ability to survive and prosper is often a function of its ability to design and develop new products that meet the needs of heterogeneous markets. The way in which a product is designed can have profound implications for product market structure and who is able to profit from an innovation, but despite this few industry studies have examined how and why product and industry architectures co-evolve and correspond across time. Notions of architectural co-evolution and correspondence are grounded in the modularity literature and assume a path towards increasing product modularity and industry specialisation. However, scholars have recently hinted that a reverse path towards increasing product and industry integration may be equally feasible. This research study contributes to the literature by proposing three stylised hybrid product and industry reintegration types that enhance our understanding of how and why reintegration may occur in product markets. Furthermore, the presence of a correspondence in the design characteristics between architectural layers (the so-called ‘mirroring hypothesis’) has also been suggested in the literature, such that product component design is often a blueprint for the way task, knowledge and firm boundaries are partitioned within a given product market. This research study finds that architectural correspondence is hard to sustain over time as firms often maintain a broader knowledge than task boundary for strategically important product components that offer differentiation opportunities or competitive advantage, contributing to the literature on contingencies that ‘mist the mirror’. Of particular interest to this research study is the UK personal pensions sector, a non-physical product, largely under-explored in the product modularity literature. By analysing the co-evolution and correspondence of a non-manufactured product over a 30-year period this research study breaks new ground. The research study makes use of a retrospective longitudinal research design, based upon semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 31 key personnel. The interview data was subject to a combination of matrix and template analysis.

Resumen
The architectural education process is fundamentally dominated by design studio courses. Their organization remains an open challenge for educators due to the complexity of related factors, such as teaching methods, design topics, assignments and assessments. In particular, the assessment of design studio courses is often a complex procedure, due to the involvement of several jury members with different expertise and their subjective interpretations. In this research, an analysis of the grading discrepancy in architectural juries is proposed. The study aims on quantifying the divergence between the final grades and the marks proposed by each juror. The percentage error was considered as a method for research. The procedure was introduced in the vertical architectural design studio at Alanya Hamdullah Emin Pasa University, Department of Architecture, during the summer semester of 2018.

Resumen
Increasing the efficiency of coal-fired power plants is vital to reducing electricity costs and emissions. Power cycles employing supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) as the working fluid have the potential to increase power cycle efficiency by 3–5% points over state-of-the-art oxy-combustion steam-Rankine cycles operating under comparable conditions. To date, the majority of studies have focused on the integration and optimization of sCO2 power cycles in waste heat, solar, or nuclear applications. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the potential of sCO2 power cycles, and quantify the power cycle efficiency gains that can be achieved versus the state-of-the-art steam-Rankine cycles employed in oxy-fired coal power plants. Turbine inlet conditions were varied among the sCO2 test cases and compared with existing Department of Energy (DOE)/National Energy Technology6 Laboratory (NETL) steam base cases. Two separate sCO2 test cases were considered and the associated flow sheets developed. The turbine inlet conditions for this study were chosen to match conditions in a coal-fired ultra-supercritical steam plant (Tinlet = 593°C, Pinlet = 24.1 MPa) and an advanced ultra-supercritical steam plant (Tinlet = 730°C, Pinlet = 27.6 MPa). A plant size of 550 MWe, was selected to match available information on existing DOE/NETL bases cases. The effects of cycle architecture, combustion-air preheater temperature, and cooling source type were considered subject to comparable heat source and reference conditions taken from the steam Rankine reference cases. Combinations and variants of sCO2 power cycles — including cascade and recompression and variants with multiple reheat and compression steps — were considered with varying heat-rejection subsystems — air-cooled, direct cooling tower, and indirect-loop cooling tower. Where appropriate, combustion air preheater inlet temperature was also varied. Through use of a multivariate nonlinear optimization design process that considers both performance and economic impacts, curves of minimum cost versus efficiency were generated for each sCO2 test case and combination of architecture and operational choices. These curves indicate both peak theoretical efficiency and suggest practical limits based on incremental cost versus performance. For a given test case, results for individual architectural and operational options give insight to cost and performance improvements from step-changes in system complexity and design, allowing down selection of candidate architectures. Optimized designs for each test case were then selected based on practical efficiency limits within the remaining candidate architectures and compared to the relevant baseline steam plant. sCO2 cycle flowsheets are presented for each optimized design.

Resumen
This work depicts the way in which the term of scene design is formed, used and developed in professional and educational system in the Republic of Serbia. The introductory part presents what that term means, how it was made and how it has evolved since the 90s. The main part of the work by means of particular examples shows how scene design was first a specific methodology in educating the students of architecture at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, then how establishing the studies of scene design at the same faculty made this methodology evolve into the professional field, where new and authentic research methods relating space emerged. Method of performing is outlined and analysed as one of that new methods, formed in the processes of contemplation, articulation, and realisation of performance space through different parts of the curriculum of new scene design studies. The goal of the work is to show the potential of this method for thorough research not only of performance space but space in general. Likewise, to show how this method could be a valuable tool in educating not only scene design and architecture students, but all the other educational profiles interested in spatial research and spatial design.

Resumen
Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach. Resumen
‘Public memores’ are an imporant aspect in preserving a place’s culture and heritage. Actions of the government and society many times define/redefine identities of places, impacting collective memory of people in perceiving places. Conscious efforts are required to make and keep public memories alive. Insensitive and uninformed Urban Planning can lead to erasing history and heritage not just physically but from public memories as well. This Paper discusses the issues of Fading Urban Memories by taking case studies of two historic towns in the South Indian State of Telangana. Most of the Small & Medium Towns in Telangana, India, developed over the last two centuries from their historic core areas of the Capitals of erstwhile Samsthans/Zamindaris, land revenue admistration units/sub-regional authorities under the British and the Princely States’ Rulesin India till Independence in 1947. These Samsthans/Zamindars/ Jagirdars were ‘Chieftains’ of their own territories and ruled from ‘Palaces’ located in their Capital city/town. The palaces and historic areas of old Samsthan/Zamindari settlements represent local histories whose significance, memory, heritage needs to be preserved for posterity. Gadwa and Wanaparthy were two such towns, which developed mid-17 Century onwards becoming present day Municipalities of different Grades. The Department of Town and Country Planning, Govt. Of Telangana, prepares Master Plans for development of Municipalities. The surviving Fort/Palaces is marked by their present land use in the development plans, unrecognized for thier heritage status, thus posing threat to heritage being erased from collective Urban memory. The case studies presented in this paper are from the ongoing doctoral research work being done by the author at School of Planning and Architecture, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad, on the topic of ‘Planning for Conservation of Samshtan/Zamindari Palaces of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh’.

Resumen
This paper compares and demonstrates the efficacy of implementing two practical Single Input Single Output (SISO) multi-loop control schemes on the dynamic performance of selected signals of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Gas Turbine (SOFC-GT) hybrid simulation facility. The hybrid plant, located at the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown WV, is capable of simulating the interaction between a 350kW SOFC and a 120kW GT using a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) configuration. Previous studies have shown that the thermal management of coal based SOFC-GT hybrid systems is accomplished by the careful control of the cathode air stream within the fuel cell (FC). A decoupled centralized and dynamic de-centralized control scheme is tested for one critical airflow bypass loop to regulate cathode FC airflow and modulation of turbine electric load to maintain synchronous turbine speed during system transients. Improvements to the studied multivariate architectures include: feed-forward (FF) control for disturbance rejection, anti-windup (AW) compensation for actuator saturation, gain scheduling for adaptive operation, bumpless transfer (BT) for manual to auto switching, and adequate filter design for the inclusion of derivative action. Controller gain tuning is accomplished by Skogestad’s Internal Model Control (SIMC) tuning rules derived from empirical First Order Plus Delay Time (FOPDT) Transfer Function {TF} models of the hybrid facility. Avoidance of strong Input-Output (IO) coupling interactions is achieved via Relative Gain Array (RGA), Niederlinski Index (NI), and Decomposed Relative Interaction Analysis (DRIA), following recent methodologies in PID control theory for multivariable processes.

Resumen
Rethinking Urban Design Problems through Morphological Regions Ezgi Küçük¹, Ayşe Sema Kubat² ¹Urban Planning Coordinator, Marmara Municipalities Union ²Prof., Dr., Istanbul Technical Univercity, Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional Planning E-mail: ezgikucuk89@gmail.com, kubat@itu.edu.tr Keywords: the Historical Peninsula, morphological regions, urban blocks, urban design, Beyazıt Square Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space The concept of urban square is a debated issue in the context of urban design practices in Islamic cities. Recognizing the relation between urban morphology and urban design studies in city planning and urban design practices is highly vital. Beyazıt Square, which is the center of the city of Istanbul, could not be integrated to the other parts of the city either configurationally or socially although many design projects have been previously planned and discussed. In this study, the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul is observed as an essential unit of the traditional path reflecting each civilization, namely Roman, Byzantium, Ottoman and Republic of Turkey that have been settled in the region. Transformations in urban blocks in Beyazıt region are elaborated through a series of morphological analyses based on the Conzenian approach of urban morphology. Morphological regions of the Historical Peninsula are identified and Beyazıt region is addressed in detail in terms of the transformations in urban block components, that are; street, plot and buildings. The effects of surrounding units which are the mosque, university buildings, booksellers and Grandbazaar on Beyazıt Square are discussed according to the morphological analyses that are applied to the region. Previous design practices and the existing plan of the area are observed through the analyses including town plan, building block, and land use and ownership patterns. It is revealed that existing design problems in Beyazıt Square come from the absence of urban morphological analyses in all planning and design practices. Through morphological regions as well as the conservation plans, urban design projects can be reconsidered. References Baş, Y.
