ABSTRACT Rlk/Txk is a member of the BTK/Tec family of tyrosine kinases and is primarily expressed in T lymphocytes. Unlike other members of this kinase family, Rlk lacks a pleckstrin homology (PH) domain near the amino terminus and instead contains a distinctive cysteine string motif. We demonstrate here that Rlk protein consists of two isoforms that arise by alternative initiation of translation from the same cDNA. The shorter, internally initiated protein species lacks the cysteine string motif and is located in the nucleus when expressed in the absence of the larger form. In contrast, the l

The BH3-only members of the Bcl-2 protein family are essential initiators of programmed cell death and are required for apoptosis induced by cytotoxic stimuli. These proteins have evolved to recognise distinct forms of cell stress. In response, they unleash the apoptotic cascade by inactivating the protective function of the pro-survival members of the Bcl-2 family and by activating the Bax/Bax-like pro-apoptotic family members.

Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) comprises a diverse family of phosphoserine- and phosphothreonine-specific phosphatases present in all eukaryotic cells. All forms of PP2A contain a catalytic subunit (PP2Ac) which forms a stable complex with the structural subunit PR65/A. The heterodimer PP2Ac-PR65/A associates with regulatory proteins, termed variable subunits, in order to form trimeric holoenzymes attributed with distinct substrate specificity and targeted to different subcellular compartments. PP2Ac activity can be modulated by reversible phosphorylation on Tyr307 and methylation on C-terminal

Why do humans experience pride? We propose that pride evolved to help individuals cope with the challenge of attaining and maintaining social status. However, given recent evidence for distinct “authentic” and “hubristic” facets of pride (Tracy and Robins, 2007), it is unclear whether the two facets promote status in different ways. Specifically, how might we account for the anti-social and narcissistic hubristic pride from a functionalist perspective? The present research addresses this question by testing whether hubristic and authentic pride underlie distinct routes to attaining high status

Resumen
AbstractIn this chapter, we identify structural features of families with shared physical custody that differ from those of nuclear families or those of families where one parent has sole physical custody, and discuss the implications for family and kin relationships. We pay particular attention to the ways in which shared physical custody alters the gendered nature of parenting and kinship. We argue that the structural features of shared physical custody create distinct contexts for parent-child and sibling relationships and produce differences in shared understandings of obligations between family members. The unique context for relationships and obligations together constitute a new family form. Our analysis generates an agenda for future research on the nature and consequences of shared physical custody.

Resumen
AbstractThis paper presents a novel method for the automated synthesis of probabilistic programs. The starting point is a program sketch representing a finite family of finite-state Markov chains with related but distinct topologies, and a reachability specification. The method builds on a novel inductive oracle that greedily generates counter-examples (CEs) for violating programs and uses them to prune the family. These CEs leverage the semantics of the family in the form of bounds on its best- and worst-case behaviour provided by a deductive oracle using an MDP abstraction. The method further monitors the performance of the synthesis and adaptively switches between inductive and deductive reasoning. Our experiments demonstrate that the novel CE construction provides a significantly faster and more effective pruning strategy leading to an accelerated synthesis process on a wide range of benchmarks. For challenging problems, such as the synthesis of decentralized partially-observable controllers, we reduce the run-time from a day to minutes.

The evidence available to a multi-agent system can take at least two distinct forms. There can be direct evidence from the environment resulting, for example, from sensor measurements or from running tests or experiments. We, therefore, envisage an agent's beliefs as a probability distribution over a set of hypotheses of interest, which are updated either on the basis of direct evidence using Bayesian updating, or by taking account of the probabilities of other agents using opinion p

Texto completo
Resumen
Recent research in developing countries suggests that a considerable number of young women may experience forced sex within marriage, but most women may be inhibited from reporting these experiences due to shame, fear of reprisal, or deep-rooted unequal gender norms. In September 2003, a global consultative meeting on nonconsensual sex among young people in developing countries was held in New Delhi, India. The meeting was organized by the Population Council in collaboration with World Health Organization/Department of Reproductive Health and Research, and Family Health International/YouthNet.
