Resumen
Historically, Domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica Gmelin,1789) (Columbiformes, Columbidae) breeders use the species to promotes race competitions which over the time could select traits to increase the flight performance and spatial orientation capabilities. Although the species has remarkable navigational abilities, it is possible that these birds sometimes become disoriented pushing the individuals to fly off-course and over distances larger than usual. Here we report a Domestic Pigeon ringed in the Canary Islands (Spain) observed in the Abrolhos Archipelago, eastern Brazil, and compile

Ectoparasitic diseases have been observed in studies that have negative effects, especially on the development of pigeons. This study was conducted to determine the ectoparasite species found in domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica) in Diyarbakır city center. A total of 125 pigeons in Diyarbakır and its center were studied in terms of ectoparasites. It was determined that 66 (52.8%) of 125 pigeons examined during the study process in Diyarbakır were infested with various ectoparasite species at varying degrees. These breeds were chosen because they differed significantly for several traits of economic interest. Markers covered approximately 85% of the porcine genome and animals were measured for growth and fatness traits. Chromosomes 4, 7 and 14 had a genome wide significant effect on at least one trait. Accurately examining animal endocrine profiles pose unique challenges due to possible human interaction influencing basal values. Standard methods of gathering information about an animals endocrine status are often dependent upon restraint and use of invasive methodologies. However to accurately monitor the influence management practices, blood sampling sometimes requires that hormone measurements be observed from animals in a relaxed state. To this end, methods for non-invasive monitoring (NIM) are greatly needed to obtain basal endocrine measurements. Such methods include fecal collections

Domestic dog (Canis familiaris) research has revealed an impressive cognitive skillset within the species; however, little research is conducted in naturalistic settings. Thus, much of what is currently known about dog cognition comes from laboratory trials. This thesis explores the dog cognitive skillset, investigating their social cognition during cross-species interactions with humans in their homes. I examine five areas: 1) the gestural and vocal repertoire of dogs used during cross-species interactions; 2) the targeted solicitation and use of social companions through communication; 3) th

This report contains a summary of past research and new knowledge about the effectiveness of mitigation measures aimed at reducing animal-vehicle collisions and at providing safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. The measures are aimed at terrestrial large bodied wild mammal species, free roaming large livestock species (e.g. cattle, horses), free roaming large feral species (e.g. “wild” horses and burros), and small animal species (amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals). While mitigation is common, it is best to follow a three-step approach: avoidance, mitigation, and compensation or “of

The main subject of this paper are two recent Latin American films (La mujer de los perros by Laura Citarella and Verónica Llinás, 2015, and Los Reyes by Bettina Perut and Iván Osnovikoff, 2018) that centre on street dogs in marginal urban zones of Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. It will be argued that in both films exemplary forms of encounter between humans and dogs outside domestic environments can be examined, exploring the alternative ways of conviviality against the backdrop of the multiple layers of shared history between two companion species. Wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) are a significant component of overall crashes in the US and Canada. Roads and their traffic also create partial or total barriers to the movement of wildlife, both large and small. There are several well-studied proven mitigation measures that significantly reduce WVCs, provide for safe animal passage across roads, and maintain habitat connectivity. Highly effective measures, such as overpasses and underpasses with fencing can reduce large animal WVCs by over 80% – 100% on average; yet these structures can be costly and there is room for improvement in their

Yellow floating heart (Nymphoides peltata), a widespread aquatic invasive plant in the US, is currently under investigation for biological control development. From 2018 to 2021, we conducted native (Europe: 14 locations; Asia: 80 locations) and introduced (US: 39 locations) range surveys to create a list of candidate agents and collect baseline infestation data for comparison. We genetically characterized populations and determined those most-closely related to US N. peltata were European. However, we found no promising agents in that region, except for previously reported fungal pathogens. I

With roots as far as the Bronze age, equines have played an invaluable role in history, both with regards to agriculture and forestry, warfare, transportation and leisure, and therefore hold important cultural significance in the Nordics. The link between horses and the welfare benefits of their caregivers makes the species an important part of society as well. Since the agricultural and industrial revolution, the equine sector has been influenced by a range of challenges due to the dramatic change in the role of horses in society, especially for the Nordic native breeds. From 16 years (2005–2020) of monitoring trends in white-tailed deer within a defined survey area of Arkansas Post National Memorial, we have been able to demonstrate both population declines and recoveries. The adjusted count of deer had a seven-fold increase between 2007 and 2011 following a two-year decline and a three-fold increase between 2017 and 2019 following a six-year decline. Overall, the deer population has declined slightly, averaging a 0.5% reduction in herd size annually. The number of deer in the survey area ranged from 16.77 ± 21.26 (mean + 95% CI) individuals/km2 in 2007 to 11

Resumen
The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network has monitored white-tailed deer over an 18-year period (2005–2022) within a defined survey area of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, documenting both a rapid decline and recovery in the population. The rapid die-off was the result of a region-wide hemorrhagic disease outbreak reported by the Missouri Department of Conservation that started in the fall of 2005, six months after we initiated deer monitoring. Although declines occurred 2005 to 2007, 2016 to 2017, and 2019 to 2022, the deer population still increased on average by 7.2% annually. Th
