Resumen
Sugarcane is an important agricultural crop grown on the east coast of Australia. The timing and amount of rainfall is critical in determining both the yield of sugar and scheduling of harvesting operations. Rainfall forecasts issued through the Australian Bureau of Meteorology are based on general circulation models (GCMs) and have a poor skill levels. They are also limited in utility to end-users such as farmers as they cover very broad geographical areas and are only issued as probabilities above or below median. This paper presents an alternative approach for forecasting monthly rainfall with up to 12 month lead-time based on machine learning, in particular neural networks. Monthly rainfall forecasts have been developed for the eight locations in Eastern Australia at 3 and 12 month lead-time. The accuracy of the forecasts has been assessed relative to a skill scale with 0% representing climatology (the long term average) and 100% representing a perfect forecast (observation). On this scale, neural network forecasts are typically in the range 39.9–68% for all months using a single month optimization. This compares very favorably with forecasts using GCM from the Bureau that have skill levels only in the range −20% to 20%.

Resumen
ACCESS-S1 will be the next version of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's seasonal prediction system, due to become operational in early 2018. The multiweek and seasonal performance of ACCESS-S1 has been evaluated based on a 23-year hindcast set and compared to the current operational system, POAMA. The system has considerable enhancements compared to POAMA, including higher vertical and horizontal resolution of the component models and state-ofthe-art physics parameterisation schemes. ACCESS-S1 is based on the UK Met Office GloSea5-GC2 seasonal prediction system, but has enhancements to the ensemble generation strategy to make it appropriate for multi-week forecasting, and a larger ensemble size.ACCESS-S1 has markedly reduced biases in the mean state of the climate, both globally and over Australia, compared to POAMA. ACCESS-S1 also better predicts the early stages of the development of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (through the predictability barrier) and the Indian Ocean Dipole, as well as multi-week variations of the Southern Annular Mode and the Madden-Julian Oscillation — all important drivers of Australian climate variability. There is an overall improvement in the skill of the forecasts of rainfall, maximum temperature (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin) over Australia on multi-week timescales compared to POAMA. On seasonal timescales the differences between the two systems are generally less marked. ACCESS-S1 has improved seasonal forecasts over Australia for the austral spring season compared to POAMA, with particularly good forecast reliability for rainfall and Tmax. However, forecasts of seasonal mean Tmax are noticeably less skilful over eastern Australia for forecasts of late autumn and winter compared to POAMA.The study has identified scope for improvement of ACCESS-S in the future, particularly 1) reducing rainfall errors in the Indian Ocean and Maritime Continent regions, and 2) initialising the land surface with realistic soil moisture rather than climatology. The latter impacts negatively on the skill of the temperature forecasts over eastern Australia and is being addressed in the next version of the system, ACCESS-S2.

Resumen
AbstractThe demands for water in agricultural regions depend on the rate of evapotranspiration (ET). Daily records of potential ET (pET) are available from the late 1980s through the present for five stations in eastern Washington State (George, Harrah, LeGrow, Lind, and Odessa) through the Pacific Northwest Cooperative Agricultural Weather Network (AgriMet) under the auspices of the Bureau of Reclamation. These records reveal a secular increase in the summer (June–August) mean pET over the period 1987–2014. This increase can be attributed largely to an increase in solar irradiance of 20–30 W m−2 over the same period. The seasonal mean solar irradiance accounts for approximately 35%–50% of the variance in the interannual variations in seasonal mean pET at the individual stations and for approximately 60% of the variance from a five-station average perspective. The period of analysis includes a mean increase of temperature of about 0.3°C (10 yr)−1, and the variability in temperature relates more to the year-to-year fluctuations in pET than to the overall increase in pET. The time series of surface relative humidity and wind speed exhibit only minor trends. Daily and seasonal mean data for 500-hPa geopotential height and other variables are used to determine aspects of the regional atmosphere associated with periods of high pET. Anomalous ridging aloft and negative anomalies in 925-hPa relative humidity tend to occur over the study area during the summers with the greatest pET. The relationships that are emerging may provide a basis for empirical downscaling of pET from global climate model projections.

Resumen
Very well-researched and well-written, this book provides an excellent discussion of the activities of federal surveillance agencies in the Pittsburgh mill district (western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio). However, Seeing Reds is neither about surveillance agencies nor the Pittsburgh Left per se, but rather about their intersection: the “federal government's effort to define, understand, and suppress leftists” during the period of World War One. It begins with an excellent survey of the early history of federal surveillance agencies, including the Bureau of Investigation (BI), the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Military Intelligence Division, and the American Protective League. McCormick pays special attention to the BI, the original name of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He looks closely at four men who, as special agents in the Pittsburgh Field Office, played a particularly important part in his story. Each had a background in either police and/or private investigative work or a college degree and/or legal training.

Resumen
For the past 3 years the Bureau of Mines, Avondale Research Center, has been doing extensive particle size measurements on respirable coal dust collected at surface and underground mines in the eastern United States. Respirable dust is the portion of airborne dust that penetrates the deepest portion of the lungs and is generally considered to be particles less than 10 μm in size. To monitor dust exposure, approximately 40,000 respirable dust samples are collected by inspectors annually. The quartz in these samples is determined by either infrared spectrophotometry or x-ray diffraction. Both methods require quartz standards. The response of both methods, however, as shown by Tuddenham, Huggins, and Klug is particle size dependent. Joint studies by the Bureau of Mines and Mine Safety and Health Administration show that inaccuracy in quantitative quartz values may be as much as 30% when the particle size of the quartz standard does not match that of the quartz in coal dust.

Resumen

Since 1998, regional governments in Indonesia have had greater autonomy due to the commencement of a reformation movement across Indonesia. Large portions of education management were delegated to the regional governments. Because of this, the education level varies strongly across Indonesia’ provinces. Referring to the data provided by the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics, it is found that Eastern Indonesia generally has a higher rate of uneducated than Western Indonesia. We review the current condition of Indonesian education in terms of regional disparity among eastern and western provinces and study the correlation between inequality in education and other related aspects, such as social and economic conditions. We find that inequality issues on socio-economic conditions are reflected in the education disparity between Eastern and Western Indonesia. By employing panel data with provinces as units of observations, we find that the difference in regional development among Indonesian provinces influences education issues. By evaluating the standard deviation of the statistic we were able to identify socio-economic factors that influence the regional education disparity.

Resumen
This thesis concerns the factors underlying the popularity of the cliff tomb, a local burial form in the Sichuan Basin in China in the Eastern Han dynasty (AD 25-220). The development of the cliff tomb was held in a complex set of connections to the development of the burial forms, and existed through links to many other contemporary burial forms, the brick chamber tomb, the stone chamber tomb, and the princely rock-cut tomb. These connections and links formed to a large extent through the incorporation of the Sichuan area into the empire which began in the fourth century BC. It was in this context, a series of factors contributed to the formation and popularity of the cliff tombs in Sichuan. The hilly topography and the soft sandstone, easy to cut, provided the natural condition for the development of the cliff tombs. The decision to make use of this natural condition was affected by many factors rooted in the social background. The inherent nature of the cliff tomb structure was fully explored, which was then followed by a series of corresponding innovations on the pictorial carvings and the burial objects. The meaning of a continuous family embedded in the cliff tomb structure was explored, as the construction of the tomb was the result of the continuous endeavours from many generations of the family, and the physical form of the cliff tomb was a metaphor for a prosperous family. Following this intention of the tomb occupants underlying the design of the cliff tomb structure, the pictorial carvings and the burial objects in the cliff tomb made adaptations to make the cliff tomb an embodiment of relations between different family members and different generations.

Resumen
Early in 2003, African Muslims in Uitenhage’s township, Kwa-Nobuhle, learnt that Muslim women, led by Sheikh Nceba Salamntu, in South Africa’s Port Elizabeth New Brighton township, were allowed, contrary to previous practice, to follow a funeral procession right up to the graveyard. The resultant discomfort on the one hand, and excitement on the other caused by this event among Muslims in the township, forms the basis of this research. It gives focus to Muslim women, the ones most affected by their customary restriction from the gravesites. The researchi exposes the basis for women’s exclusion from funeral processions in the Muslim community. It was established that many of these Muslim women who challenged the practice were converts from Christianity to Islam. One of the bases for their action was that they were passive recipients of Islam. Furthermore, it was found that the exclusion of women from the funeral procession has no basis in Islamic writings.

Gilbert, Matthew Edmund. "The zonation of coastal dune plants in relation to sand burial, resource availability and physiological adaptation". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003764.

Texto completo
Resumen
When considering the large amount of work done on dune ecology, and that a number of the classical ecological theories originate from work on dunes, it is apparent that there remains a need for physiological and mechanistic explanations of dune plant phenomena. This thesis demonstrated that in the extreme coastal environment dune plants must survive both high rates of burial (disturbance), and low nutrient availability (stress). The ability of four species to respond to these two factors corresponded with their position in a vegetation gradient on the dunes. A low stem tissue density was shown to enhance the potential stem elongation rate of buried plants, but reduced the maximum height to which a plant could grow. Such a tradeoff implies that tall light-competitive plants are able to survive only in stable areas, while burial responsive mobile-dune plants are limited to areas of low vegetation height. This stem tissue density tradeoff was suggested as the mechanism determining the zonation that species show within the dune vegetation gradient present at various sites in South Africa. Finally, detailed investigations of dune plant ecophysiology found that: 1) The resources used in the response to burial derive from external sources of carbon and nitrogen, as well as simple physiological and physical mechanisms of resource allocation. 2) The leaves of dune plants were found to be operating at one extreme of the photosynthetic continuum; viz efficient use of leaf nitrogen at the expense of water loss. 3) Contrary to other ecosystems, the environmental characteristics of dunes may allow plants to occupy a high disturbance, high stress niche, through the maintenance of lowered competition. 4) At least two mobile-dune species form steep dunes, and are able to optimise growth, on steeper dunes, such that they have to grow less in response to burial than plants that form more shallow dunes. In this thesis, it was shown that the link between the carbon and nitrogen economies of dune plants was pivotal in determining species distributions and survival under extreme environmental conditions. As vast areas of the world’s surface are covered by sand dunes these observations are not just of passing interest.

Francavilla, Stephen A. "Millennial-scale variability in denitrification and phosphorus burial in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3860.

Resumen
The remarkable synchrony between changes in temperature recorded in Greenland ice cores and variations in N isotope records from sedimentary cores recovered from the Arabian Sea and the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) has provided evidence for teleconnections between changes in marine denitrification in the tropics and climate variations in the northern high latitudes. Changes in tropical denitrification have been attributed to changes in productivity, changes in the source of intermediate waters and the flux of dissolved oxygen to suboxic zones. Variations in marine denitrification and anammox occurring at intermediate depths in proximity to productive continental margins have had profound effects on the N:P ratio of upwelled waters between stadials and interstadials, and may have indirectly affected carbon sequestration in the ocean by changing the balance of nutrients available to primary productivity. Competitive equilibrium, the changing stoichiometric balance of elements available as nutrients and the shorter residence time of N compared to P are factors that are believed to favour diazotrophs (N2-fixing organisms) during interstadials and shift the competitive advantage to non-N2-fixing ecosystems during stadials. This study presents a very high-resolution analysis of sedimentary nitrogen isotope records, phosphorus concentrations and bulk detrital element concentrations from two cores collected along the Pacific Mexican Margin. The results show that the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) bathing intermediate waters in ETNP is modulated by the interaction of a Northern Hemisphere climate component with the “leakage” of heavy nitrate believed to derive from the Eastern South Pacific (ESP). This southerly component has a more “Antarctic” timing and is similar to records from the Peru-Chile margin. The sedimentary core recovered from the Mazatlan margin shows a “Greenland” timing of millennial-scale events, with reduced upwelling and reduced primary productivity, a less intense OMZ leading to reduced denitrification and a more southerly position of the mid-tropospheric subtropical ridge during stadials. This would have increased the onshore flow of moist air, ultimately leading to increased precipitation along the western Mexican Margin. Interstadials show a reversal of these conditions. In contrast to the Mazatlan core, the N isotope record from the core recovered from the Gulf of Tehuantepec records an element of “Antarctic” timing superimposed on local, millennial-scale variations in denitrification that are more similar in timing to Greenland temperature changes. In addition, the interpretation of observed variations in detrital elements from the Gulf of Tehuantepec highlights latitudinal displacements of the ITCZ that are consistent with those observed in the Cariaco Basin in Venezuela. Bulk P concentrations from both cores suggest that although phosphorite formation in the ETNP during interstadials is not as widespread as previously thought, the very high accumulation rates in the Gulf of Tehuantepec and Mazatlan Margin lead to total Holocene phosphorus burial rates that are up to 4-5 times higher than had been estimated in previous studies. These observations lead to the argument that the ETNP may play a more important role in regulating global P budgets than was previously thought and call for an improved appreciation of the benthic microbial communities that modulate biomes at tropical latitudes.

Navarro, Sigourney Nina. "The Crematorium of Hanga Hahave on Rapa Nui (Easter Island): What stories can the skeletal remains reveal". Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Arkeologi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-325498.

Texto completo
Resumen
This paper uses an osteological approach and applies the study of entanglement in an attempt to understand the crematoria on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), which represent a unique tradition within the ceremonial spheres of the Polynesian area. Skeletal remains from the crematorium of ahu Hanga Hahave, which consist of both cremated - and unburned remains, have been analysed to reveal the different practices that took part in the cremation process and to identify the individuals that were deposited in such structure. Ethnohistorical records were applied to interpret the osteological evidence and to discuss the circumstances surrounding the possible use of the crematorium, as either a site for sacrificial offerings or a site for burials. This paper aims at creating an underlying basis for the study of crematoria on Rapa Nui and provides an overview of the processes central to the disposal of the dead and the usage and significance of this structure. The results of this study showed that the ancient Rapanui through the practice of cremation, followed an internalised structure within their society to complete each cultural act that constituted the crematorium, and these were divided in the construction of the crematorium, the making of fire, and the treatment of the dead. The complexity of each cultural act presents the possibility that an organised society, with at least one designated head, may have been in charge of the practice of cremation physically and spiritually. The skeletal remains could not be applied to determine whether the crematorium of Hanga Hahave was used for sacrificial offering or for burial since the analysed remains only represented one-fifth of the entire bone collection from the crematorium. However, the findings of this study have pointed towards a burial practice rather than a sacrificial one.

Jones, Emma G. "'Burial at sea' : consumption and dispersal of large fish and cetacean food-falls by deep-sea scavengers in the abyssal Northeast Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Mediterranean Sea". Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1999. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU484683.

Resumen
The fate of cetacean carcasses in the deep-sea was investigated using autonomous lander vehicles incorporating time-lapse camera and acoustic tracking systems, as well as fish and amphipod traps. Four lander deployments placed cetacean carcasses at depths of 4000-4800m in the Northeast Atlantic for periods of 36h, 152h, 276h and 480h, before being recovered. The photographic sequences revealed that the soft tissue of carcasses was consumed at rates varying from 0.05-0.48kg.h-1, depending on how intact the carcass was. In each deployment, approximately 1h after emplacement, the grenadier Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus and large numbers of lysianassid amphipods had arrived at the food-fall. Amphipods appeared to be the only scavengers able to feed directly on the carcass. They tunnelled through the skin and connective tissue layer to reach the blubber and muscle, which was consumed in preference to anything else. Despite being unable to feed on the carcass directly, grenadier numbers remained high until the majority of the bait had been consumed. They were believed to be preying on amphipods attracted to the food-fall. Acoustic tracking studies suggested that, although overall fish numbers remained high during this phase, individuals did not stay significantly longer at the site of the large food-fall compared to a small one, and a "conveyer-belt" of fish arrived, fed and dispersed on a scale of 10s to 100s of km. Once the soft tissue had been removed, grenadier numbers declined and mobile scavengers were replaced by a variety of more benthic fish and invertebrates, some of which took up residence amongst the bones, e.g. eelpouts and galtheid crabs. Funnel traps recovered with the carcass and from a series of fish trap deployments of varying duration indicated a succession in species composition of amphipods, with specialist necrophages such as Eurythenes gryllus and Paralicella sp. being replaced by more generalist feeders of the Orchomene species complex.

Brezina, Cynthia A. "The detrital mineral record of Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in the Central Burma Basin : implications for the evolution of the eastern Himalayan orogen and timing of large scale river capture". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6730.

Resumen
This study contributes to the understanding of major river evolution in Southeast Asia during the Cenozoic. In order to trace the evolution of a hypothesized palaeo-Yarlung Tsangpo-Irrawaddy River, this work undertakes the first systematic provenance study of detrital minerals from Cenozoic synorogenic fluvial and deltaic sedimentary rocks of the Central Burma Basin, employing a combination of high precision geochronology, thermochronology, and geochemistry analytical techniques on single grain detrital zircon and white mica. The dataset is compared to published isotopic data from potential source terranes in order to determine source provenance and exhumation history from source to sink. A Yarlung Tsangpo-Irrawaddy connection existed as far back as ca. 42 Ma and disconnection occurred at 18–20 Ma, based on provenance changes detected using a combination of U-Pb ages and εHf(t) values on detrital zircons, and ⁴ºAr/³⁹Ar dating on detrital micas. During the Eocene and Oligocene, units are dominated by U-Pb age and high positive εHf(t) values, characteristic of a southern Lhasa Gangdese magmatic arc source. An antecedent Yarlung Tsangpo-Irrawaddy River system formed the major river draining the eastern Himalaya at this time. A significant change in provenance is seen in the early Miocene, where detritus is predominantly derived from bedrock of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, western Yunnan and Burma, a region drained by the modern Irrawaddy-Chindwin river system characterized by Cenozoic U-Pb ages and negative εHf(t) values. This is attributed to the disconnection of the Yarlung-Irrawaddy River and capture by the proto-Brahmaputra River, re-routing Tibetan Transhimalayan detritus to the eastern Himalayan foreland basin. Re-set zircon fission track ages of 14-8 Ma present in all units is used to infer post-depositional basin evolution related to changes in the stress regime accommodating the continued northward migration of India. The early Miocene initiation of the Jiali-Parlung-Gaoligong-Sagaing dextral shear zone and the continued northward movement of the coupled India-Burma plate aided in focusing deformation inside the syntaxis contributing to the disconnection of the Yarlung Tsangpo-Irrawaddy system, linking surface deformation and denudation with processes occurring at deeper crustal levels.

Resumen
After finishing their course at the Bedford Japanese School in 1942, some people were sent out to the Wireless Experimental Centre in Delhi, which was the equivalent to Bletchley Park in India and which also absorbed cryptographers from the Far East Combined Bureau after the fall of Singapore. The Wireless Experimental Centre was primarily concerned with monitoring communications connected with the Burma Campaign and the Japanese attempted invasion of India. Meanwhile, the members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service who had been working at the Far East Combined Bureau in Singapore, and who had been the first British servicewomen to be posted overseas, were transferred to Kilindini Naval Base near Mombasa, where the British Eastern Fleet was based after having been forced to leave its base on Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In 1944, as the tide of the war was turning, the Eastern Fleet returned to Ceylon: one of the troopships, SS Khedive Ismail, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and this led to the largest single loss of Allied servicewomen and of African troops in the war, including some of the Wrens.

Resumen
Back in the halcyon days of 1951, when the United States was entering its golden years of wealth and power and proclaiming that this was the American Century, there seemed no limit to what we could do with nature. Were some climates too hot? We could air-condition them. Were some too cold? We could thaw them out or raise tomatoes under glass. Were some too dry? We could, through hydraulic engineering, make them over into a veritable Eden of delights. In that year a Time magazine reporter traveled to the arid West to write about “the endless frontier” being won there by the engineers of the Bureau of Reclamation. They promised to develop enough water to redeem fifty million acres from aridity, enough acres to feed the equivalent of a whole new nation the size of France or Germany. And the engineers were not in the least reluctant to say what pleasure they got out of the work: “We enjoy pushing rivers around,” they told the reporter. Whether the pushing had any real direction, any clear sense of ends, was secondary; they (and by extension, we Americans) were a people who enjoyed dominating nature and we would look for rationales later. In a spirit of what the magazine called “engineering ecstasy,” almost every river in the western part of the country came under control and was made to raise alfalfa, fruit, and cotton. Our agricultural base shifted abruptly westward into the desert, and eastern and midwestern farmers suffered substantial damage to their fortunes. By the last agricultural census, the West counted over 45 million irrigated acres, producing one-fourth of the nation’s annual farm market sales. Though it irrigated only a small percentage of that acreage, the Bureau of Reclamation was unexcelled among water pushers for ambition and scale. It was the Bureau that had erected some of the biggest dams ever: Hoover, Grand Coulee, Shasta, Glen Canyon, Teton, Navajo, Flaming Gorge, etc., the clearest, brightest expressions we had of our national drive to conquer the land. But the big dams were more than that.

Resumen
This chapter demonstrates how those parties that came into being as a result of their leaders' long years in Moscow and their postwar dependence on the support of the Red Army's troops were at a monumental disadvantage. Importantly, their association with the Soviet Union meant that they were deprived of the national narrative; indeed, they were regarded by their populations as agents of an enemy power. Since most of the Eastern European parties fell into this category, it is no wonder that they welcomed the black-and-white simplicity of the Communist Information Bureau, or Cominform. There was a cost to this conformity, however. Their acceptance of a Stalinist, state-centered model of leadership meant that they, like their Soviet overseers, were prepared to sacrifice the motivating idea of communist party rule. Given the fact that they had few alternative sources of legitimation than state power, most paid this price, even at the cost of ignoring their national identities.

Resumen
In June 1917, Congress passed the Espionage Act, suspending basic civil liberties in the name of wartime national security. Suddenly, peace work seemed dangerously untenable, even to some in movement leadership. Nevertheless, the American Union Against Militarism (AUAM) voted to test the new wartime laws, campaigning to prevent a draft and devising a new category of military exemption based on conscience. But continuing tensions threatened to rupture the AUAM from the inside. Lillian Wald and Paul Kellogg wanted to resign. Eastman proposed an eleventh-hour solution: create a single, separate legal bureau for the maintenance of fundamental rights in wartime—free press, free speech, freedom of assembly, and liberty of conscience. The new bureau became the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). However, Eastman’s hopes to shape and oversee that work, keeping it focused on internationalism and global democracy, were not to be. The birth of her child sidelined her while Roger Baldwin, arriving at a critical time for the country and the organization, took charge and made the bureau his own.

Resumen
Macrofauna is supposed to influence on physic-chemical characteristics of the sea bottom sediments. Through its bioturbation mechanism porosity, area of oxygenated layer and oxygen penetration depth have increased. This lead to alterations in nutrient cycling as well as improvement in redox conditions which define direction of fluxes in the sediments. In oxic conditions phosphorus is transformed into particulate form and thus, its retention and burial increase. In contrary, denitrification is getting weaker and nitrogen returns into the water. The impact of benthic organisms bioirrigation activity on other chemical components in solid sediments is not sufficiently studied. Present investigations were carried out for the most abundant benthic species in the Gulf of Finland Marenzelleria spp. Those polychaetes are active turbators and their irrigation effect lead to significant changes in chemical compounds in the solid sediment. On the basis of statistical analysis of data on vertical distribution of organic carbon content, total iron and manganese in solid sediments and abundance of Marenzelleria spp. there was found that polychaetes have a significant impact on organic carbon content, while for total iron and manganese such regularity is not revealed.

Resumen
The Experimental Breeder Reactor - II (EBR-II) at Argonne National Laboratory - West (ANL-W) was shutdown in September 1994 as mandated by the United States Department of Energy. Located in eastern Idaho, this sodium-cooled reactor had been in service since 1964, and was a test facility for fuels development, materials irradiation, system and control theory tests, and hardware development. The EBR-II termination activities began in October 1994, with the reactor being maintained in an industrially and radiologically safe condition for decommissioning. With the shutdown of EBR-II, its sodium coolant became a waste necessitating its reaction to a disposal form. A Sodium Process Facility (SPF), designed to convert sodium to 50 wt% sodium hydroxide, existed at the ANL-W site, but had never been operated. The SPF was upgraded to current standards and codes, and then modified in 1998 to convert the sodium to 70 wt% sodium hydroxide, a substance that solidifies at 65°C (150°F) and is acceptable for burial as low level radioactive waste in Idaho. In December 1998, the SPF began operations. Working with sodium and highly concentrated sodium hydroxide presented some unique operating and maintenance conditions. Several lessons were learned throughout the operating period. Processing of the 330 m3 (87,000 gallons) of EBR-II primary sodium, 50 m3 (13,000 gallons) of EBR-II secondary sodium, and 290 m3 (77,000 gallons) of Fermi-1 primary sodium was successfully completed in March 2001, ahead of schedule and within budget.

Resumen
This paper discusses computations of seismic induced soil pressures using finite element (FE) models for deeply embedded and/or buried (DEB) stiff structures, such as those appearing in the conceptual designs of structures for advanced reactors. For DEB structures, the soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect is expected to have a strong influence on the estimate of the seismic induced soil pressures, especially for stiff structures embedded in soft soil strata. In this paper, two FE models are developed using the SASSI and LS-DYNA computer programs, representing respectively the substructure subtracting method and explicit FE algorithm. SASSI utilizes the wave propagation theory and the principle of superposition to treat the SSI phenomenon. In the LS-DYNA analysis, an attempt is made to apply the direct approach to the SSI effect, which treats the near field soil with an explicit FE mesh that is connected to a transmitting boundary to approximate wave propagation in the half-space. The structural model used for the study is derived from the characteristics of a conceptual design for an advanced reactor. The structure is founded in a soft soil overburden underlain by a rock and the input seismic motion is specified at rock outcrop and has a zero period acceleration (ZPA) equal to 0.3 g, typical of review level earthquakes for nuclear power plant structures in the Central and Eastern United States. Various depths of burial (DOB) for the structure are considered in the analysis to afford an assessment of the DOB effect on the seismic induced soil pressure estimates determined by these methods. Comparisons and discussions of the analysis results computed by the two approaches are provided.

Resumen
The Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) is one of the last remaining large and nearly intact temperate ecosystems on Earth (Reese 1984; NPSa undated). GYA was originally defined in the 1970s as the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, which encompassed the minimum range of the grizzly bear (Schullery 1992). The boundary was enlarged through time and now includes about 22 million acres (8.9 million ha) in northwestern Wyoming, south central Montana, and eastern Idaho. Two national parks, five national forests, three wildlife refuges, 20 counties, and state and private lands lie within the GYA boundary. GYA also includes the Wind River Indian Reservation, but the region is the historical home to several Tribal Nations. Federal lands managed by the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service amount to about 64% (15.5 million acres [6.27 million ha] or 24,200 square miles [62,700 km2]) of the land within the GYA. The federal lands and their associated wildlife, geologic wonders, and recreational opportunities are considered the GYA’s most valuable economic asset. GYA, and especially the national parks, have long been a place for important scientific discoveries, an inspiration for creativity, and an important national and international stage for fundamental discussions about the interactions of humans and nature (e.g., Keiter and Boyce 1991; Pritchard 1999; Schullery 2004; Quammen 2016). Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 as the world’s first national park, is the heart of the GYA. Grand Teton National Park, created in 1929 and expanded to its present size in 1950, is located south of Yellowstone National Park1 and is dominated by the rugged Teton Range rising from the valley of Jackson Hole. The Gallatin-Custer, Shoshone, Bridger-Teton, Caribou-Targhee, and Beaverhead-Deerlodge national forests encircle the two national parks and include the highest mountain ranges in the region. The National Elk Refuge, Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, and Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge also lie within GYA.
