EEV buried channel charge coupled devices (BC CDs) with technological variations have been studied with respect to their response to 70kVp X-rays. Process variations considered are the conventional BCCD, scintillator coated BCCDs (Gadox(Eu) and Csl(Tl)) and the inversion mode device. The work was made necessary by the use of these CCDs for dental X-ray imaging. Effects investigated include changes in device operating voltages and dark current. When cells are trypsinized before irradiation, potentiation of cell killing is seen; this is known as the 'trypsin effect'. The interaction between sublesions produced by neutrons [p(66)/Be and d(16)/Be] and ⁶⁰Co γ-rays was investigated using mammalian cells, meristematic cells and human lymphocytes. The quality of each radiation source was quantified in terms of molecular yield per unit dose absorbed in a ferrous sulphate xylenol orange solution and was found to vary inversely with the mean LET of the radiation field. <p>The aim with this thesis was to assess the impact of prenatal ultrasound exposure on psychotic illness, childhood brain tumors (CBT) and school achievement, and to evaluate prenatal X-ray exposure and the risk of CBT.</p><p>In a cohort study, children born in Malmö 1973-1978, where prenatal ultrasound was used routinely, were considered exposed (n=13, 212) and children born at hospitals with no use of ultrasound, were considered unexposed (n=357,733). Studies of Radiation-Induced Conductivity (RIC) in the Teflon film of a radiation-charged electret ionization chamber (EIC) are discussed. An EIC measures dose from the amount of electret surface charge neutralized by ions created in the chamber's sensitive volume. A semi-empirical equation is presented for the calculation of prompt time-dependent RIC as a function of air-kerma rate and electric field.
