Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic (A/A/O) process is applied widely in municipal wastewater treatmen plants, which attribute to good perfromance for nutrient removal. However the design parameter of A/A/O process is mainly from experiments based on stable flow rate. So performance parameter of any WWTP must be modified according to actual conditions. Othewise, peformance efficiency of the WWTP can not meet initial design properties and it maybe result in serious energy waste. According to the experiences of start-up, commissioning, operation control and performance test of Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic (A/A/O) process in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the notions on successful start-up and effective operation are summarized and analyzed. The countermeasures on the variety of influent, the control of DO and sludge system to keep WWTP operating economically and stably are presented.

Resumen
The objective of the present study was to examined the chewing behaviour of Moa buffalo fed on local forages. The experiment was analysed as Latin square 4 x 4, four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were A (combination of graas and aulumadam), B (grass and knumge, C (grass and weru leaves) and D (grass).Variables measured were chewing during eating (intake rate, chewing rate and efficiency) and chewing during rumination (ruminating rate, time spent ruminating per bolus, rumination efficiency, and regurgitation rate). The result show that intake rate was 31.78, 30.52, 31.99, 32.14 gram/minutes for treatmen A, B, C and D, respectively. Chewing rate (no.of chew/minutes) for A, B, C and D was 50.81, 53.95, 56.50, and 55,67, reapectively, and chewing efficiency (no.of chews/dry weight) was 0.23, 0.31, 0.21, and 0.35 for A, B, C, and D, respectively. Ruminating rate (no of bolus/minutes) was 1.16, 1.06, 1.26, and 1.34 for A. B, C and D, respectively. Ruminating efficiency (no. of chews/bolus) for A, B, C, and D was 37.70, 43.68, 36.48 and 36.24, respectively. Time spent ruminating per bolus was 1.14, 0.96, 0.82. and 0.75 minutes for A, B, C, and D, respectivly, and regurgitation rate (minutes) was 0.16, 0.89, 1.46, and 0.44 for A, B, C, and D, respectively. It can be concluded than Moa buffalo consume all forages with similar rate and efficiency, while chewing rate differ among the the treatments. Chewing rumination is similar among all forages.

Resumen
The article presents the results of research on the possibility of increasing the recovery factor of oil fields by implementing the waterflooding treatment as one of the most common enhanced oil recovery method. Based on the interpretation of data from the core flow tests, an attempt was made to characterize the displacement process using original reservoir brine and waters with lower salinity level. Additionally, the relation between the type of wettability of the rock and recovery factor was investigated. Original reservoir fluids that were characterized in terms of their basic rheological parameters were used for research purposes. The rock material consisted of 16 samples of Cambrian sandstones. The initial scope of work concerned the petrophysical characteristics of the cores, including the determination of their basic parameters, such as absolute gas permeability, porosity and pore volume. Based on the determined values of permeability, the available samples were grouped which made it possible to perform test sets for pairs with the most similar filtration parameters in the next stages of the research. Further work included the performance of relative permeability analyses and the determination of the value of the mobility factor for the oil – reservoir water system in order to determine the type of wettability of the rock and the potential efficiency of the oil displacement process. The main element of the research was the simulation of the waterflooding process carried out in two parts – the first with the use of the original reservoir water (corresponding to the secondary recovery methods) and the second with the use of low-salinity waters (the third recovery methods) in two variants of the mineralization level. Based on the obtained data of the displaced oil, for each of the displacement medium recovery factor curve were constructed and compared with the determined type of wettability of the rock.

Resumen
Recently, an increasing problem in wastewater treatment is the insufficient removal of organic pollutants. These substances can be toxic to the environment already in a small amount, either acutely or chronically. The goal is therefore to develop of technologies that ensure their effective removal. One possibility is to use advanced oxidation processes. Advanced oxidation processes work on the principle of non-selective oxidation mediated by OH radicals. Several methods such as O3/H2O2 (Peroxone), UV/H2O2 or Fenton´s reaction can be used to generate them. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effectiveness of the used advanced oxidation processes in wastewater treatment via ekotoxicity tests. Wastewater samples treated with advanced oxidation processes on the pilot unit showed low values of acute toxicity for selected test organisms (D. magna, T. platyurus, S. alba, L. minor). For the sample of waste water that was treated with the UV/H2O2 on AOP laboratory unit, there was an increase in acute toxicity on the testing organism D. magna and L. minor. The similar effect was observer in the tests with the D. magna with the model samples treated with the same method, while the tests on the L. minor showed a reduction in toxicity.

Resumen
This work concerns the efficient treatment of wastewaters from pulp and paper mills by means of aerobic biological processes. For treatment processes there are many aspects of efficiency and the present study investigates both energy efficiency and purification efficiency during disturbances. Special focus is put on wood extractives, such as resin acids and fatty acids, since they can cause negative effects in fish and other organisms in the receiving waters. They can furthermore be toxic to microorganisms in a biological treatment plant. They also affect oxygen transfer, which is important for energy efficient aeration of aerobic biological treatment processes. This thesis includes five papers/studies and presents a strategy for efficient treatment of forest industrial wastewaters. The results should help creating resilient wastewater treatment strategies with efficient use of energy. One new strategy proposed here includes separation of extractives before the wastewater is treated biologically, and the use of the extra amount of sludge as an energy source, shifting the energy balance from negative to positive.

Content: Pre-treatments are widely used during tanning processes as to improve the performance of the main tannage. Synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to study four common types of pre-treatments, viz. monodentate complexing agent (sodium formate, SF), chelating agent (disodium phthalate, DSP), covalent cross-linker (glutaraldehyde, GA) and nanoclay (sodium montmorillonite, MMT) about their effects on chromium-collagen cross-linking reaction during tanning. Based on the results, the performance of chromium-collagen cross-linking with and without pre-treatments was presented considering five aspects: cross-linking, the level of hydration, hydrothermal stability, uniformity through leather cross-section and the uptake of chrome. Comparing to the original ThruBlu chrome tanning, at the same chrome offers, leather pre-treated using SF, DSP and MMT showed improved hydrothermal stability, uniformity and the level of hydration, while GA showed decreased hydration. All of the pre-treatments reduce surface fixation by decreasing the reactivity of chromium with collagen. Changes in the reaction performance can influence the properties of the leather products as well as the efficiency of the leather manufacturing processes. Insights into the structural changes of collagen during tanning with varied reaction conditions can guide the design of novel, benign tanning processes to reduce environmental impact. Take-Away: 1. Uniformity of the hydrothermal stability through leather cross-section were improved by all of the studied pre-treatments. 2. Reactivity of chromium to cross-link with collagen was reduced as a result of the complexing, covalent cross-linking, or preferential adsorption. 3. Complexing agents and nanoclay pre-treatments tend to retain collagen bound water, while covalent cross-linker causing decrease in the level of hydration of collagen.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment processes of two drinking water plants to remove immunotoxins and steroid hormones. Raw and treated drinking water was screened for effects on inflammatory activity using the biomarker IL-6, humoral immunity using the biomarker IL-10 and cell mediated immunity using the biomarker IFN-&gamma
. In vitro human whole blood culture assays were used in order to elucidate potential immunotoxicity.

This study employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to evaluate the performance of agricultural aircraft routes. In the context of agricultural aircraft usage, not enough attention has been paid to the efficiency study of the routes in agricultural operations. Aircraft are used in agriculture to perform various treatments on agricultural land. Presumptions in this study are that a land is divided into parcels and one type of treatment must be performed on these parcels. Also, the considered operation is performed by the agricultural aircraft and the size of the analyzed land implies that all parcels cannot be treated in one route, so there are multiple routes which have to be completed. Here, we propose application of output oriented CCR DEA model on one set of routes in order to determine relatively efficient routes. Proposed inputs for the application of the DEA method are: tank capacity of an aircraft and total cost of parcel treatment in one route. Proposed outputs are: total treated land area (total area of all parcels in route) in one route and percentage share of effective flight in the total distance traveled in one route. In this way relatively efficient routes can be selected, and some further analysis of relatively inefficient routes can be made in order to see what changes can be done in inputs and / or outputs of these inefficient routes to improve their performance.

Resumen
This report describes the quality assessment of blind via holes (BVHs) of Printed Wiring Boards (PWBs) drilled by a CO2 laser using Cu-direct drilling. In the Cu-direct drilling method, the copper foil and the buildup layer are melted at the same time, and the surface is treated to increase the laser energy absorbed by the copper foil because an untreated copper surface reflects most of the 10.6-μm-wavelength CO2 laser beam. We used black-oxide and V-bond treatments as surface treatment. Previously, the only black-oxide treatment was paid attention to, but the new V-bond treatment is also investigated in this report. First, a straightforward method employing infrared thermography was proposed to determine the absorbance of the CO2 laser beam by the copper surface. Then, we used SEM to characterize the copper surfaces after surface treatment, and established the relationship between laser absorbance and surface shape. Subsequently, we observed the circumference of a point irradiated with the CO2 laser and explained melting processes were different from surface shape. Finally, we investigated the relationship between laser absorbance and BVH quality, and showed that a high absorbance improved BVH quality.

Resumen
Tip blowing and axial slot casing treatments have shown their ability to enhance the stability of a transonic axial compressor with different effects on efficiency. For an effective application of these casing treatments, a good knowledge of the influence of the casing treatment on the rotor flow field is important. There is still a need for more detailed investigations, in order to understand the interaction between the treatment and the near casing 3D flow field. For transonic compressor rotors this interaction is more complex, as super- and subsonic flow regions alternate while interacting with the casing treatment. In the present study, an axial slot and a tip blowing casing treatment, which have been developed and optimized for the same tip critical transonic axial compressor rotor (reference rotor) by Streit et al. [1] and Guinet et al. [2], are subject of the investigation. Both casing treatment types showed their capabilities to enhance the compressor stability without losing by means of CFD simulations. Since the higher compressor stability allows a higher blade loading, Streit et al. reduced the blade number of the rotor. Thus, the efficiency was increased due to the reduction of friction losses. However, applying the tip blowing casing treatment to the reduced rotor shows a negative effect on the efficiency. Both casing treatment types recirculate flow from a downstream to an upstream location of the rotor and reinject it to enhance the near casing flow field. Although the working principle of the two casing treatment types are similar, the transfer of the casing treatments from the reference to the reduced rotor show different trends in efficiency. Therefore, the effect of recirculation cannot explain the difference in efficiency. Hence, applying axial slots must include additional flow features, compared to recirculation channels. Compensating effects as in circumferential groove casing treatments and other flow interactions between the near casing flow field and the slot flow are considered. These additional mechanisms of the axial slot casing treatment will be identified and isolated by comparing the two different casing treatment types. The numerical simulations are carried out on a 1.5 stage transonic axial compressor using URANS simulations.

Resumen
Growing volume of washed vegetables in Europe and Lithuania means that more drinking water is consumed and more wastewater is produced. Farmers, who engage in washing vegetables, face the problems of wastewater treatment, wastewater storage and utilization. Wastewater released to the environment from their farms would meet hygiene and environmental protection criteria. The aim of the study was to assess the contamination of the root vegetable wash water and to evaluate the possiblity of cleaning of wastewater in the land-based treatment system consisting of one constructed wetland and two biological ponds. The contamination of wastewater, produced by washed root vegetables, in Lithuanian farms was measured according to suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen and total phosphorus. Pollution of the wash water and wastewater was evaluated comparing the mean values with legislative limit values and with typical sewage contamination values. In all farms wastewater of initial root vegetables washing was treated in settling basins. Wastewater of one carrots washing farm was treated in the land-based wastewater treatment system consisting of surface flow constructed wetland and two biological ponds. Efficiency of the wastewater treatment in this system was according to suspended solids 90%, BOD7 – 97%, CODCr – 92%, total nitrogen – 98% , total phosphorus – 97%. The result shows, that the natural wastewater treatment system is suitable for farms, that wash and produce vegetables, but before releasing wastewater to the environment, it has to be settled.

Nowadays, the problem of water pollution with phosphorus compounds is especially important. Wastewater treatment plants do not always meet the strict requirements for the residual total phosphorus concentration – 1 mg/l in the treated wastewater. Usually individual wastewater treatment plants have a poorer removal of phosphorus from the wastewater because they are more sensitive to fluctuations in wastewater flow and environmental conditions. Research results in the scientific literature shows that only 30–50% of the phosphorus is removed from the wastewater by conventional methods. Additional wastewater treatment is recommended for higher phosphorus removal efficiency achievement. One of the ways to remove phosphorus from wastewater is filtration through sorbents filter media. The efficiency of three sorbents – Filtralite P, foam-glass and crushed shells to remove phosphorus from biologically treated wastewater is investigated in this article. A phosphate phosphorus concentration was reduced by filtering wastewater through sorbents filter media during the experiment. Concentrations of treated wastewater pollutants, filtration rate, efficiency of sorbents to remove phosphorus from the wastewater were measured and evaluated. Experiment results showed that phosphate phosphorus was effectively removed by Filtralite P sorbent (removal efficiency 97–98%), less effective were foam-glass (removal efficiency 66–95%) and crushed shells sorbents (removal efficiency 39–50%).

Resumen
The ability to detect and quantify beneficial surface and subsurface residual stresses, and operational damage in aerospace materials/structures in a reliable and efficient manner presents significant challenges to existing nondestructive inspection technologies. Induced Positron Analysis (IPA) has demonstrated the ability to nondestructively quantify shot peening/surface treatments and relaxation effects in single crystal superalloys, steels, titanium and aluminum with a single measurement as part of a National Science Foundation SBIR program and in projects with commercial companies. IPA measurement of surface treatment effects provides a demonstrated ability to quantitatively measure initial treatment effectiveness along with the effect of operationally induced changes over the life of the treated component. Use of IPA to nondestructively quantify surface and subsurface residual stresses in turbine engine materials and components has the potential to significantly improve the understanding at the microscale level the effects of surface coatings and treatments on the durability and fatigue life of critical components.

Electrochemical disinfection has gained interest as an alternative to conventional wastewater treatment because of its high effectiveness and environmental compatibility. Two and a half billion people currently live without improved sanitation facilities. Our research efforts are focused on developing and implementing a freestanding, additive-free toilet system that treats and recycles blackwater on site. In this study, we sought to apply electrochemical disinfection to blackwater. We compared commercially available boron-doped diamond (BDD) and mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes for disinfection efficiency in E. coli–inoculated model wastewater. The MMO electrodes were found to be more efficient and thus selected for further study with blackwater. The energy required for disinfection by the MMO electrodes increased with the conductivity of the medium, decreased with increased temperature, and was independent of the applied voltage. Fecal contamination considerably increased the energy required for blackwater disinfection compared to model wastewater, demonstrating the need for testing in effluents representing the conditions of the final application.
