In this paper, we demonstrate a novel technique for dynamically generating an emotionally-directed video game soundtrack. We begin with a human Conductor observing gameplay and directing associated emotions that would enhance the observed gameplay experience. We apply supervised learning to data sampled from synchronized input gameplay features and Conductor output emotional direction features in order to fit a mathematical model to the Conductor's emotional direction. Then, during gameplay, the emotional direction model maps gameplay state input to emotional direction output, which is then in

Although it is widely believed that emotions vary with age, there is a dearth of information on emotional experiences in later adulthood. Several researchers think that older adults experience less emotional intensity than younger people while others have suggested that aging is accompanied by a decrease in positive affect and an increase in negative emotions. Sex similarities and differences in emotionality have also been documented. This study focuses on age and sex similarities and differences in emotional control. In this paper we are concerned with the metaphors capturing the aspect of control. Emotion is conceptualized as a force inside the person that can exert pressure on him or her and the person, in turn, is seen as an entity exerting a counterforce in an attempt to control that force. The control aspect of emotion concepts is highlighted by several metaphors. The metaphorical source domains that focus on this aspect include: FLUIDS UNDER PRESSURE, OBJECTS, OPPONENTS, CAPTIVE ANIMALS, NATURAL FORCES, INSANITY, INTOXICATION, SUPERIORS, BEING ON THE GROUND, REDUCING THE TEMPERATURE. This study mainly deals with the various aspects of modeling the learning processes within the brain limbic system and studying the various aspects of using it for different applications in control engineering. The current study is a multi-aspect research effort which not only requires a background of control engineering, but also a basic knowledge of some biomorphic systems. The main focus of this study is on biological systems which are involved in emotional processes. In mammalians, a part of the brain called the limbic system is mainly responsible for emotional processes. Therefore, genera

A combined methodological approach was adopted, which collected a variety of data. Firstly, from an interview study, it was found that strict emotion rules continue to govern the way inner feelings and outward emotional expressions are permitted to be experienced. Emotion is still gendered, with a core emphasis on maintaining emotional control. In contrast, subjective accounts of premenstrual syndrome portrayed premenstrual emotional experiences as being expressive, of

Cognitive models of threat processing maintain that threat, depending on the task at hand, can speed (when task relevant) or impair (when task irrelevant) cognitive performance (Pessoa, 2009). It is generally assumed that attentional bias to threat is modulated by anxiety, with increased anxiety leading to increased bias (Bishop, 2007; Mathews & Mackintosh, 1998). Evidence suggests that such biases are not actually specific to anxiety, however, and instead form part of a broader personality spectrum of negative affect or neuroticism (Clark & Watson, 1991), of which anxiety is but one facet. Fear conditioning, facial expression recognition, autonomic activation, and emotional memory have been studied extensively during the last thirty years, yet the precise relationship between emotions and the action system has not been systematically explored. To our knowledge, the only human studies explaining this issue all employ the fear-potentiated startle reflex paradigm. In these studies, emotions are viewed as a preparatory state evoked by threat cues. This preparatory state is usually elicited by very unpleasant pictures, and is indexed by changes in the amplitude of electromyographic s

This system consists of several components that carry out different tasks. The system level understanding of the limbic system has been previously captured in a discrete event computational model. This computational model was modified suitably to be used as a feedback mechanism to regulate the output of a continuous-time first order plant. An extension to a class of nonlinear plants is also discussed. The combined system of the mo

In ethics education in particular, there is evidence that including mild emotional information in case studies can enhance learning. Evidence also suggests that specific emotions such as guilt and shame can impact on motivation to act in ethical scenarios. The place of emotions in ethics education remains controversial, however, since emotion can be perceived as a source of bias rather than as a valuable factor in learning
