During the last decade, the Greek shellfish industry has experienced significant changes affecting both the market demand and the availability of the end products. Although, shellfish and seafood in general have been promoted as healthy food by marketing boards and private seafood companies in many countries all over the world, no attention has been paid so far to analysing the Greek consumer’s purchasing behaviour and attitudes towards the shellfish market. At Western Australia's Swan-Canning Estuary, extensive subfossil shellfish assemblages of Middle Holocene origin were largely destroyed through dredging for cement production in the first half of the twentieth century. This case-study of an extractive industry driving shellfish ecosystem decline builds on existing historical studies of commercial over-harvesting of oysters, and historical and paleo-ecological investigations of sustainable, long-term indigenous oyster harvests, presenting an important new perspective on global shellfish ecosystem decline and the enduring cultural value of shell

While studying the cycle of viral contamination of aqueous media, it appears that the human being is both the primary contaminator and the secondary receiver of the viruses transported in the aqueous medium. Human contamination takes place by drinking water of poor quality, by eating vegetables irrigated with waste water or shellfish. Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric infections and epidemics have been reported in many countries. The viruses responsible for the transmission of epidemics are mostly gastro-enteric viruses (Norwalk virus, Rotavirus and “

The presence of shellfish remains in archaeological sites has prompted the development of a methodology for their study. With this purpose, archaeomalacology emerges as a discipline within archaeozoology. A number of important aspects of life in ancient societies may be known by studying shellfish middens using analytical methods. The origin of food supplies, gathering strategies, economy, temperature of the sea water, trade, use of ornaments and so on, are all subjects approached by a discipline such as archaeomalacology.

Hotate Shellfish Cultivation is the largest shellfish cultivation in the world, but many pests and parasites are found. This research aims to inventory the types of pests and parasites found in the cultivation of Hotate Shellfish (Patinopecten yessoensis) in Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan. The objects used for this research were 54 Hotate shellfish, consisting of three life stages of shellfish, namely seed shellfish, juvenile shellfish, and adult shellfish. This research was carried out using observation and random sampling methods to determine the types and percentages of pests and parasites pres

Shellfish and algae mariculture make up an important part of the marine fishery carbon sink. Carbon sink research is necessary to ensure China achieves its goal of carbon neutrality. This study used the material quality assessment method to estimate the carbon sink capacity of shellfish and algae. Product value, carbon storage value, and oxygen release value were used to calculate the economic value of shellfish and algae carbon sequestration. The results showed that the annual average shellfish and algae carbon sink in China was 1.10 million tons from 2003 to 2019, of which shellfish accounte

The use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of low levels of enteric viruses in bivalve shellfish is hindered by the presence of potent amplification inhibitors. A procedure previously developed for removing the majority of these amplification inhibitors is applied to the detection of enteroviruses and hepatitis A virus in naturally polluted field samples. Quantification of PCR inhibition showed that PCR sample tolerance ranged from 2 to 4.7g shellfish for highly polluted samples. These results indicate the need for adequate controls for PCR inhibition, particularly for negati

Abstract A neuroblastoma cell culture assay was used to analyze shellfish extracts for presence of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (saxitoxins). Results were compared with mouse bioassays performed as part of a screening program for shellfish toxins in New Zealand. Twenty-nine samples gave negative results in both assays. Fifty-seven samples gave positive results in at least one assay. The correlation between the assays for saxitoxin equivalent levels in shellfish was 0.867. In spiking studies on shellfish extracts, the neuroblastoma assay showed a good response to added saxitoxin. Althou

This study investigates human enteric virus contamination of a shellfish harvesting area. Samples were analysed over a 14-month period for Small Round Structured Viruses (SRSVs) using a previously developed nested RT-PCR. A clear seasonal difference was observed with the largest numbers of positive samples obtained during the winter period (October to March). This data concurs with the known winter association of gastroenteric illness due to oyster consumption in the UK and also with the majority of the outbreaks associated with shellfish harvested from this area during the study period. Current measures for controlling the public health risks associated with bivalve molluscan shellfish consumption rely on the use of Escherichia coli to indicate the sanitary quality of shellfish harvesting areas. However, it has been demonstrated that E. coli is an inadequate indicator of the viral risk associated with shellfish. An alternative indicator, male-specific B+ coliphages, have been investigated as viral indicators of faecal contamination that may provide source-specific information for impacted environmental waters. Three bays along the South African coast were studied for the presence of Salmonella spp in seawater, effluent and stormwater discharges into the bays and in shellfish harvested at the same sites. The microbial quality of water and shellfish samples was studied using faecal coliforms and enterococci as indicators of pollution. A combination of Rappaport-Vassiliadis enrichment broth and bismuth sulphite agar was found to provide the best enumeration method for Salmonella spp in samples from a wide range of origins.
