Resumen
Hypsarrhythmia in West syndrome, although hard to define, is characterized by chaotic and disorganized electrical activity of the brain and is often regarded as a generalized EEG pattern without any localization value. Using event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP), we tried to determine the brain dynamics during hypsarrhythmia. Routine 1-h scalp EEGs were retrieved from 31 patients with infantile spasms and 20 age-matched controls. Using the EEGLAB toolbox of MATLAB 2015b, the ERSPs of fast oscillations (FOs; 20–100 Hz) of selected channels were analyzed and compared among groups according to their MRI lesions. FO-ERSP cutoff values for predicting the pathologic foci were estimated. The mean FO-ERSPs across all analyzed electrodes of patients with spasms were significantly higher than those of controls. When the patients were categorized into nonlesional, focal/multifocal, or diffuse lesional groups, the FO-ERSP of patients in the focal/multifocal lesional group was significantly lower than that of those in the nonfocal or diffuse lesional groups. In the focal/multifocal lesional group, seven patients (7/9, 77.8%) showed that the locations of channels with high FO-ERSPs were matched to the pathologic MRI lesions. Thus, the localization of high FO-ERSPs is closely associated with the location of pathologic brain lesions. Further research is required to prove the value of the FO-ERSP as an important quantitative localizing biomarker of West syndrome. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The locations of high fast oscillation-event-related spectral perturbations (FO-ERSPs) are closely associated with brain pathologic lesions, and high FO-ERSPs can be used as a localization biomarker of pathologic brain lesions in patients with hypsarrhythmia. With further validation, FO-ERSP might be useful as a biomarker for the localization of hidden pathologies in conditions with generalized epileptiform activities such as West syndrome.

Resumen
Inhibitory control is an integral part of executive functions. In this study, we report event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) results from 15 healthy adults performing an emotional stop-signal task with the use of happy, disgusted, and neutral emotional faces. Our ERSP results at the group level suggest that changes in low frequency oscillatory power for emotional and neutral conditions start at as early as 200 ms after stimulus onset and 300 ms before button press for successful go trials. To quantify the dynamics of trial-by-trial theta power, we applied the hierarchical drift diffusion model to single-trial ERSP at the mid-frontal electrode site for the go condition. Hierarchical drift diffusion modeling (HDDM) assigned higher frontal low-frequency oscillatory power for evidence accumulation in emotional contexts as compared to a neutral setting. Our results provide new evidence for dynamic modulation of sensory processing of go stimuli in inhibition and extend our knowledge for processing of response inhibition in emotional contexts.

Resumen
ABSTRACT One hundred eighteen erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (ERSP) strains (MICs of ≥0.5 μg/ml) from five laboratories serving the private sector in South Africa were analyzed for the genes encoding resistance to macrolides. Sixty-seven ERSP strains (56.8%) contained the erm(B) gene, and 15 isolates (12.7%) contained the mef(A) gene. Thirty-six isolates (30.5%) harbored both the erm(B) and mef(A) genes and were highly resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin. DNA fingerprinting by BOX-PCR and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified 83% of these strains as belonging to a single multiresistant serotype 19F clone.

Resumen
The effect of motivation and attention could play an important role in providing personalized learning services and improving learners toward smart education. These effects on brain activity could be quantified by EEG and open the path to analyze the efficiency of services during the learning process. Many studies reported the appearance of EEG alpha desynchronization during the attention period, resulting in better cognitive performance. Motivation was also found to be reflected in EEG. This study investigated the effect of intrinsic motivation on the alpha desynchronization pattern in terms of the complexity of time series data. The sample entropy method was used to quantify the complexity of event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) of EEG data. We found that when participants can remember the stimulus, ERSP was significantly less complex than when they cannot. However, the effect of intrinsic motivation cannot be defined by using sample entropy directly. ERSP’s main effect showed that motivation affects the complexity of ERSP data; longer continuous alpha desynchronization patterns were found when participants were motivated. Therefore, we introduced an algorithm to identify the longest continuous alpha desynchronization pattern. The method allowed us to understand that intrinsic motivation has an effect on recognition at the frontal and left parietal area directly.

Resumen
Sleep has been shown to promote memory consolidation driven by certain oscillatory patterns, such as sleep spindles. However, sleep does not consolidate all newly encoded information uniformly but rather “selects” certain memories for consolidation. It is assumed that such selection depends on salience tags attached to the new memories before sleep. However, little is known about the underlying neuronal processes reflecting presleep memory tagging. The current study sought to address the question of whether event-related changes in spectral theta power (theta ERSP) during presleep memory formation could reflect memory tagging that influences subsequent consolidation during sleep. Twenty-four participants memorized 160 word pairs before sleep; in a separate laboratory visit, they performed a nonlearning control task. Memory performance was tested twice, directly before and after 8 hr of sleep. Results indicate that participants who improved their memory performance overnight displayed stronger theta ERSP during the memory task in comparison with the control task. They also displayed stronger memory task-related increases in fast sleep spindle activity. Furthermore, presleep theta activity was directly linked to fast sleep spindle activity, indicating that processes during memory formation might indeed reflect memory tagging that influences subsequent consolidation during sleep. Interestingly, our results further indicate that the suggested relation between sleep spindles and overnight performance change is not as direct as once believed. Rather, it appears to be mediated by processes beginning during presleep memory formation. We conclude that theta ERSP during presleep memory formation reflects cortico-hippocampal interactions that lead to a better long-term accessibility by tagging memories for sleep spindle-related reprocessing.

Resumen
This randomized crossover study investigated whether anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefontal cortex (dlPFC) modulates memory-guided finger isometric maintenance during single motor and dual cognitive-motor tasks, based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Twenty-three healthy participants (14 female; M age = 29.130 years, SD = 10.918) underwent both sham and 2-mA stimulation sessions over the dlPFC for 20 minutes, with a minimum washout period of seven days. We analyzed finger-force isometric maintenance and event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) of the EEG during early and later phases of both tasks. We observed a significant motor accuracy improvement ( p = .014) and significant variation of force output ( p = .027) with significant decrease in ERSP on the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) (early phase, p = .027; later phase, p = .023) only after 2 mA stimulation. Thus, anodal tDCS over the dlPFC may improve memory-guided force control during cognitive-motor dual tasks.

With new technological advances in functional brain imaging and theoretical progress in the knowledge of the different neurophysiologic processes linked to cognition, the last two decades have seen the emergence of Brain-Machine Interfaces (BCIs) allowing a person to observe in real-time, or with a few seconds delay, his own cerebral activity. Clinical domain in general, and more particularly neuropsychology and pathologies leading to heavy motor handicaps, for which potential applications are numerous, whether therapeutic or for functional rehabilitation, has been a major driver of research on this new field of real-time neurosciences. Among these applications, neurofeedback, or neurotherapy, which aims the subject to voluntary control some aspects of his own cerebral activity in order to amplify or reduce them in a therapeutic goal, or for cognitive optimization, represents a promising technique, and an alternative to drug treatments. However, validation of this type of intervention and understanding of involved mechanisms are still in their infancy. Neurofeedback training is often long, up to several weeks. It is therefore very likely that this type of rehabilitation is seeking brain plasticity phenomena that are part of slow dynamics, and thus require a relatively long drive to achieve the desired long-term effects. However, other disturbing elements that could add up to the cause of the difficulty of learning and long training sessions required to achieve the expected results. Among them, the disturbances that come from recorded signal distortions, or artifactual elements that are not part of the signal of interest, are a first potential cause. The lack of functional specificity of the signal returned to the subject could be a second one. We have developed signal processing methodological tools to improve the robustness to artifacts and electromagnetic noise of EEG signals analysis, the main brain imaging technique used so far in the field of neurofeedback and BCIs. On the other hand, if one looks at the issue of functional specificity of the signal presented to the subject, studies using functional MRI or source reconstruction methods from the EEG signal, which both provide signals having a better spatial specificity, suggest improvements to the speed of learning. Seeing Independent Component Analysis as a potential tool to increase the spatial specificity and functional contingency of the feedback signal presented to the subject, we studied the stability of Independent Component Analysis decomposition of the EEG across different recording sessions conducted on the same subjects. We show that these decompositions are stable and could help to increase the functional specificity of BCI training. We also worked on the implementation of a software tool that allows the optimization of experimental protocols based on neurofeedback to use these independent components to reject artifacts or to extract brain activity in real-time. These tools are useful in the analysis and characterization of EEG signals recorded, and in the exploitation of their results as part of a neurofeedback training. The second part focuses on the development of neurofeedback protocols and the impact of learning. We first describe the results of a pilot study which seeks to evaluate the impact of a neurofeedback protocol based on the Mu rhythm control on healthy subjects. The behavioral changes were studied using a stop signal paradigm that indexes the attentional abilities and inhibition of motor responses on which the BCI training can possibly have influence. To conclude this section, we present a new tool for immersive interactive brain training, education, art and entertainment that can be used to assess the impact of immersion on learning during a neurofeedback protocol. Finally, prospects for methods and results presented are discussed in the context of next-generation BCI development which could take brain activity complexity into account. We present the latest advances in the study of certain aspects of the neural correlates associated with two mental states or classes of mental states that could be described as antagonistic with respect to the control of attention: meditation and mind wandering, for their integration in the longer term in an BCI training using neurofeedback

Recently the electricity sector has experienced big changes in the way how the energy is produced, distributed and consumed, and one of the major reference in its restructuring is decentralization in her generation, which has contributed for the participation of different technologies based on renewable sources in particular the wind energy which represent a considerable amount of total energy produced in the world, and as a result came out the strong regulatory requirements of quality of service imposed on network operators. In a network, in particular the isolated, the amount of the wind production has a strong influence so much on the level of dynamic security, such as in reducing the energy cost of production. What makes it interesting her analysis in real time in a dynamic simulation platform by means of mathematical models in order to assess the penetration capability without compromising stability in the face of disturbances and or critical scenarios of operation, such as short circuit, fall and / or sudden/ unexpected increase of the wind speed. This study when is applied to a real case, as is in the case of Cape Verde, where the wind energy is a strategic vector for growth, the results of this study could eventually play an important role in the national energy planning formulation, one since through this it is possible to identify the challenges of wind power penetration on these networks, as well as her transmission and distribution needs for a safe supply of electricity. Given the methodology of this study it is applied to a set of scenarios and disturbances in the power grid of the island of Boa Vista, which correspond real situations in order to analyze the voltage stability and to know the dynamic behavior of the network as the panorama of penetration 50% of the renewable energy in Cape Verde until 2020.

The number of photovoltaic systems in low voltage grids has been increasing in recent years. Apart from the fact that these systems produce energy in a clean way, they require little maintenance and they are very useful in remote locations and with difficult access. However, the increase of the number of these systems brings problems to the grid, specially voltage increases above the threshold set and bidirectional power traffic. Typically, these systems are connected to the grid in order to inject the maximum power generated. However, these systems can also provide ancillary services that allow voltage regulation and phase balancing. The storage has been emerging as a mean to improve the quality of the grid and to facilitate the integration of small scale renewable energy resources in low voltage networks. In this context, this dissertation presents the study of the impact of photovoltaic systems with and without storage with ancillary services. In this work it’s proposed the injection of active and reactive power in order to balance the network and adjust voltage. The use of storage for reduction of losses is also proposed.

Plannings systems which can be considered as modules of an Enterprise Resource Planning system play a vital role in different types of organizations. The effects of the planning systems towards the Management Control Systems and organizational performance are less investigated in the context of not-for-profit/service providing organizations. This study sheds light on the effects of the planning systems on informal management controls and non-financial organizational performance by investigating the Swedish university sector through a case study performed at the Royal Institute of technology where the data were gathered using semi-structured interviews from different administrators using the planning systems. The study presents the effects of ten planning systems towards personnel controls, cultural controls and planning & decision making controls. It further examines how the planning systems affect the personnel development, workplace relationships, employee satisfaction and other type of organizational performance measures. In this endeavour, the results of this study shows how the personnel controls affects the personnel development, cultural controls affects the workplace relationships and planning & decision making controls affects the employee satisfaction, all in the light of different planning systems. Furthermore, it was also found out how different planning systems affect different organizational performance measures, namely, quality and efficiency of processes, quality of staff, employee health & safety, gender equality, premises and infrastructure, student attractiveness, quality assurance, research & education and external professional relationships. Finally this study generalizes the results found through investigating each planning system, which can be applied to the university sector/not-for-profit organizational sector in Sweden.

An old industrial building is being modernised for the University Library and the University Archive of Chemnitz - the Alte Aktienspinnerei. The building retains the character of a 19th century factory building and will house a modern library that will be open around the clock. A very special library will be created, which will not only be a home for printed and electronic media, but will also provide an atmosphere in which people interested in science can meet, find printed and digital information, discuss with each other and develop new ideas.

Resumen
The critical success factors for enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementations in industry, especially in manufacturing, have been explored at length; however, little is available on implementing ERPs in higher education, even though administrative systems and ERPs have been identified as among the top information technology (IT)-related issues for campuses. This chapter examines the recent implementation of SAP®’s Campus Management (CM) system at the University of Mississippi (UM) in order to gain insight into what determines the success or failure of ERP implementations in higher education. It focuses on the transition to ERP, organizational issues, and project management in a university setting and then proposes critical success factors. While many universities implemented ERPs, this case study is particularly interesting, because it was one of the first implementations of SAP®’s student administration system and therefore presents a different perspective from other more prevalent ERPs in the higher education market.

Resumen
Since deployment of Enterprise Systems (ES) such as Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs) within enterprises, both Large Enterprises (LEs) as well as Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have increased and continue to increase, making it increasingly desirable to measure the degree of utilization of ERP systems in enterprises. One reason for this interest is that no benefits are realized if the systems are not used; since ERPs are massive investments, they need to show benefits, or at least be able to measure the benefits. However, to be able to do so, there is a need to explain ERP systems utilization and the factors that influence ERP utilization. This chapter provides an explanation of factors influencing ERP systems utilization by testing a research model building on four dimensions: volume, breadth, diversity, and depth. The contributions of the research are: First, it provides support for the notion of diffusion found in the theory of network externalities where a critical mass is necessary to achieve benefits. This can be used to better understand failures in ERP projects. Second, the use of volume, breadth and depth provide insights for use as a construct and the need to treat it more rigorously. Third, the study contributes to our understanding of the many aspects of use of IT, such as ERPs, and potentially contributes to value and firm performance from ERP utilization.

Heparin has been used to prevent thranbotic events in vascular surgery for more than 45 years. Heparin-activity monitoring has been advocated, but is not usually performed routinely. A direct method for measuring heparin anti-Xa activity with a chromogenic substrate is difficult to perform during surgery for logistic reasons or lack of suitable equipment. The use of this assay, however, could give us a better insight in the kinetics of heparin during vascular surgery. To use this heparin-activity assay during vascular surgery in ccmbinatian with clotting assays and a antithrcmbin III-assay, one should be able to perform both kinetic and end-point methods in a rapid, simple and reproducable manner. Therefore, in this study we tested the FP-910 coagulation analyser (Labsysterns), in which both methods can be assayed. It was used during 20 consecutive abdominal aorta reconstruction operations, in which a standard dose of 4-5,000 IU heparin was given intravenously. Bloodsairples were taken at several intervals, APTT, PT, ThT, fibrinogen, AT-III and heparin could be assayed within 30 min. after a bloodsanple was taken, with good intravariations (1.8%, 3.3%, 3.9%, 7.5%, 4.9% and 5.0%, ersp.) and intervariations (5.0%, 4.5%, 3.8%, 11%, 8.9% and 6.1%, resp.). Heparin activity alone could be measured within 10 min. The preoperative sanples shewed no abnormalities. Heparin activity response 5 min. after injection showed a wide variation (0.2-2.8 IU/ml) and this was also seen in the individual heparin elimination rates. In one case a thranbotic complication occured during a period of low heparin activity (0.1 IU/ml). In another patient a combined decrease of fibrinogen and AT-III, to 30% and 37% resp, of the initial value was seen. These results showed that, during vascular surgery, a close monitoring of heparin activity with a anti-Xa activity assay, together with other haemostasis parameters is necessary, and possible in a rapid and simple way, using the FP-910 coagulation analyser.
