Resumen
ABSTRACT Tabletop exercises are among the most widely conducted exercises. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to introduce realism into these kinds of exercises. Some attempts have been made to enhance these exercises with overhead displays or computer imagery. Overhead displays still document the incident in only two dimensions, while computer imagery can be quite costly. A cost-effective alternative may be the three-dimensional tabletop exercise. With a 3-D tabletop exercise, many of the benefits of a full-scale deployment exercise are gained, while minimizing costs to almost the same level

The ICS Planning Process Exercise (IPPE) also allows for contingency plan validation. In the more familiar exercise types—tabletop exercises, functional or field exercises, and full-scale exercises—players come together for a period of time to execute the exercise. Resumen
AbstractThe chapter shows the interconnectedness of nationalism with the construction of the self and close relationships by studying the romantic correspondence of a Finnish nationalist couple in the mid-nineteenth century. Eiranen analyzes personal nationalism by looking at how nationalism was incorporated in the self-narrations of the letters and identifies emotions and gender as central elements in the construction of the national experience. The nationally interpreted male and female ideals formed the basis for the emotional relationship. The cause required gendered sacrifices, partly contradictory to the stereotypes: the man cast himself as an emotional national hero, the woman had to exercise stronger emotional control for his benefit. The chapter argues that the power of nationalism lay in its tight connection to profound, personally experienced meanings and motivations.

To support the U.S. war effort in April 1917, Camp begins and actively promotes around the country a “Senior Service Corps”—local groups of executives who jointly exercise one hour a day, three days a week, to improve fitness and relieve stress from war-induced overwork. In Washington, DC, he obtains some cabinet-level participation. He advocates his exercise ideas for naval service personnel and is appointed to the Navy Commission on Training Camp activities as director of athletics. Besides supervising football and other sports contests, he develops an exercise program he calls the “Daily Dozen,” consisting of twelve different exercises that can be done in a few minutes without exhausting the exerciser. After the war, Camp writes magazine articles and books to promote nationwide civilian physical fitness, including promoting the Daily Dozen to wide use. He also promotes playground development as well as golf for adults, including advocating more municipal golf courses for the general population.

For German Occupation personnel France became a place to exercise the tourism imaginary that had developed over the preceding generations in Germany as elsewhere. The Deutsche Wegleiter, a bi-weekly guide, offered tourism tips for German soldiers. Hitler set the tone with his tour of Paris, where he was famously photographed standing before the Eiffel Tower. The army organized tours for tens of thousands of German personnel. Sex tourism and gastronomic tourism featured prominently, with selected brothels and elite restaurants made available to German personnel. Tourist images of France may have inadvertently spared France the kind of “polonization” that occurred elsewhere during the war. The touristic iconicity of Paris may have helped spare it the fate of Warsaw during the war.
