Resumen
Despite lots of works on I.S. Turgenev’s style the language of his prose is not enough studied. The article deals with used in his works expressive derivational means. This article purpose is to define types and functions of derivational units in the prose by I.S. Turgenev. It is defined authorial innovations, analyzed their derivational structure and the link with the narration structure. The main attention is paid to compound adjectives and adverbs that function as epithets. These words generally name colours and characterize the exterior and inner world of characters. The morphemic repeat (root and affixal) is considered as expressive derivational means peculiar to Turgenev’s individual style. It is defined its functions and the connection with the set of images of the text. It’s marked that the repeat of words with the component polu- is used very often. The author concludes that the expressive derivational means can be considered as one of the specification of Turgenev’s individual style.

Resumen
The author introduces the expressive potential of derivational means in Ivan Bunin’s prose. It is noted that the writer consistently avoided occasional word formation. Innovations in his works are potential in nature and few in number. The study is aimed at identifying expressive derivational means and determining their functions in the prose of Bunin. The resources were analysed with descriptive and structural-semantic methods. The author distinguishes the groups of derivational means significant for Bunin’s idiostyle: complex adjectives and adverbs with a trope component in their composition, folk etymological formations and expressive derivational dialectisms. Morphemic repetition is considered as essential for Bunin’s prose. It performs the intensifying-distinguishing and text-forming functions and serves to deploy a certain motif and theme as well as to create a word picture. Actualisation of derivational relations in Bunin’s prose reveals the implied sense of the text.

Resumen
The paper deals with coloristic means in the works by the well-known Ukrainian writer-Sixtier. It focuses on the functions of colors and color effects in the text, their analogues in painting, and the role of the colors in showing semantic and mood accents or expressing some implicated meanings. The researcher traces accordance of the literary means with expressive resources of painting art as they are recorded in the theory of art. Throughout all the periods of the writer’s creative work the prose by V. Drozd shows the author’s attention to the plastic wealth of the outside world and its coloristic potential. The search for the graphic forms of a psychological analysis, as well as the mood dominant, the background of event, the expressive color markers of semantic accents or meaningful image components of exposition, and, after all, the very painting-like modeling of the landscape or interior, stimulated new graphic experiments that renewed and deepened aesthetic impact of a literary work on a reader, due to the culture of visual perception and constructive imagination. The first attempts of verbal design and color rendering in V. Drozd’s works still testify to his literary apprenticeship showing excessively decorative nature, unambiguity of semantic associations, bright hues and chromatic saturation that looks rather as adopted from pictures and not taken from nature. Such artistic approach to the theme generates enormous, and at the same time ideologically typical, pathos associated with aesthetics of socialistic realism and therefore with the teaching function of art. The development of coloristic culture in the works of the prose writer is rooted in his attention to the rich range of hues, their emotional and expressive potential, and also in the author’s desire to show a psychological action in a more plastic and suggestive way. In order to reproduce the coloristic variety of sensory experience and underline important semantic implications the writer skillfully works on the parameters of achromatic light environment which becomes symbolized or transformed in a fantastic and hyperbolic way due to the expressive function of light markers. The light and color contrasts or combinations of hues may underline some essential semantic aspects of the verbal picture components within the reproduction of a landscape. The analysis of figurative and modeling means proves the artistic functionality of the verbal analogues of painting in V. Drozd’s prose, and its consistency with the aesthetic dominants of the Sixtiers.

Resumen
The article reviews the scientific literature and traces the main trends in the development of postmodern text and the development of expressive syntax as a stylistic construction during the XX – XXI centuries. Particular attention is paid to the work of domestic and foreign linguists. The main focus is on the study of metasymbolization of metaphorization and metonymization processes with their basic techniques and means that create the emotionally expressive background of prose text. The basic and auxiliary functions of syntactic-stylistic markers in the novels of German postmodernists are examined in details. The syntax of the German language written postmodern prose text is expressive of the processes of metaphorization and metonymization, implicit means known as the “metasymbolization” of syntactic and stylistic units. The process of metaphorization of expressive means of German language postmodern prose is due to allegory, symbolism, and synesthesia. The most typical type of metaphorization was personification. Metonymization in the texture of writing prose text is considered based on spatial and temporal, material and causal, associative and logical and quantitative relationships. Metonymy is syntactic in nature, compared to the semantic nature of metaphor. Functional approach to the study of syntactic-stylistic markers of German expressive syntax in postmodern texts is based on functionalism as a methodology and guided by its basic research principles, since it is in the functions of the syntactic-stylistic markers that the true intentions and reinforce of the postmodern author are strengthened. We see the perspective of our research in a comprehensive comparison of the German-speaking postmodern text of German, Austrian and Swiss postmodernists.

Resumen
The article examines the use of syntactic stylistic devices in scientific prose. Sentences with emphatic do have been singled out among the great number of syntactic stylistic devices. The numerous examples with the emphatic do in English scientific prose confirm the hypotheses put forward by R. Budagov, S.S. Gusev, N.M. Razinkina, S.K. Gasparyan that a great number of stylistic devices are used in the language of science. The emphatic do in English scientific prose is not confined to the emphatic function only. The individuality of the author can often be easily traced in these examples. Through the use of the constructions with the emphatic do, the author expresses his opinion towards the idea stated. These structures often turn into an integral part of the language of science. Combined with other stylistic devices and expressive means they help the author to exert certain influence on the reader.

Resumen
The article discusses the functioning of phraseological units in the language of M. A. Sholokhov’s prose and their role in creating a linguistic picture of the world. The research objectives were to describe various types of phraseological units, to show the methods of introducing them into the literary text and to identify approaches used by the writer to create new phraseological units. To this end, the methods of structural-semantic, component and comparative analysis were used, along with statistical description and contextual analysis. It is concluded that phraseological units, being figuratively emotionally expressive signs of the language, reveal the figurative and artistic world of the writer. The idiostyle of M. A. Sholokhov is largely determined by the widespread use of dialect phraseology and the creation of phraseologisms – structural and semantic modifications of linguistic units and the writer’s idioms.

Resumen
The article examines the cognitive specificity of lyric prose texts as a product of discursive activity. The semantic space of lyric prose texts decodes images of cultural memory as an interpretive category of cognitive linguopoetics. The meaning-generating mechanisms of lyric prose texts are focused on reflecting the ego-perception of reality, which explicates the cultural and value attitudes of the author. In cognitive linguopoetics, architectonics represents the semantic essence and integrity of the lyric prose text, since it is a discursive and pragmatic manifestation of its semantic continuum. Through the prism of the architectonics of the text, the associative-figurative tonality of the semantic content of the artistic text is decoded. That is why the concept of architectonics integrates two principles: a) the creative-discursive potential of text generation and b) a multi-vector palette of discursive consciousness, which is motivated by the experience of lyrical speech thinking. The essence of lyric prose texts is determined by the lyrical architectonics of sensory-emotional and aesthetic integrity, which is motivated by poetic reflexems, representing a discursively conditioned scan of reality, passed through the prism of expressive-figurative perception of the egotope.

Resumen
This paper studies the discourse strategies and communicative potential of the English language in a selection of Afro Saxon prose passages. The term ‘Afro Saxons’ was first coined by Kenyan scholar, Ali Mazrui, in 1975, by analogy with ‘Anglo Saxons’, to refer to the linguistic phenomenon in which the English language is increasingly becoming the ‘first language’ functionally of a great many black and African people. This study, therefore, enlarges upon this concept and undertakes to elaborate on the ways in which the communicative and expressive possibilities of English are exemplified in a selection of some of the most lyrical and dramatic prose extracts by some African writers. Mounted upon the theoretical platforms of Mazrui, and Halliday’s systemic functional grammar (SFG) with its contextual parameters of the ideational (field), interpersonal (tenor) and textual (mode) metafunctions, the research appraises the attitudes to the increasing global status of English. Then employing two Anglo Saxon prose passages as the control, it investigates in some detail the organic configurations of discourse such as transitivity, mood, thematic structure, cohesion and coherence in passages from Armah, Achebe and Soyinka, and concludes that, based on the effective use of the figurative and expressive metafunctions of the language, these authors may indeed be referred to as Afro Saxons.

Resumen
Computer Assisted Translation tools continue to become more ubiquitous, but translation students do not necessarily receive much training in using them, and may therefore find translating when using them very different to translating freehand. An experiment was conducted where a three Master’s students were each asked to translate two texts; one in a CAT tool and the other freehand, and the resulting target texts were inspected to determine whether they may have been affected by the segmentation performed by the CAT tool compared to freehand translations of the same text, and if so, how. There were indications that in certain cases, such as very long sentences, the CAT tool may act as a visual aid, and also indications that certain students may be more prone to follow the segmentation provided by the CAT tool than others. However, the influence of personal translator style and translator’s habitus cannot be disregarded and as such the differences that are apparent cannot be entirely attributed to the CAT tool.

Resumen
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder, targeting the β-cells of the pancreas. Processes occurring in the gut and pancreas are inferred to be involved. The pre-diabetic expression signature in these tissues is largely uncharacterized. HYPOTHESIS: Spontaneous models of T1D, the LEW.1AR1/Ztm-iddm rat (LEW-DP) and BioBreeding diabetes-prone rat (BBdp) exhibit a distinct transcriptional signature prior to T1D onset. Transcriptional profiling was used to elucidate the expression signatures of the LEW-DP gut and BBdp pancreas. The LEW-DP gut displayed decreased expression of markers of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages. The LEW-DP rats showed an upregulation of markers of pro-inflammatory signaling when fed a diabetes-promoting cereal diet compared with LEW-DP rats fed a protective hydrolyzed casein diet. Prospective pancreatectomy was used to analyze T1D development in the BBdp rat. Significant upregulation of β-cell markers Reg3α, Reg3β, and Trim26 was observed in pre-diabetic rats. Thus, it was shown that environment modifies the transcriptional program and the transcriptional profile is programmed early to affect T1D development.

Resumen
Microarray technology provides a quantitative assessment of the number of gene transcripts gene using a high-throughput hybridization assay. Reliable detection of gene expression therefore requires reliable design of probes used in the hybridization assay. It is noted that microarray gene expression measurements are often characterized by variability, even among a series of technical replicate arrays. Therefore, sequence verification, used as a low-level filter to exclude probes exhibiting sequence inaccuracies, has previously been shown to reduce gene expression variability.Building on this work, the effects of sequence- and annotation-based filtering methods were quantified, and shown to be effective in reducing microarray variability among a set of technical replicates. Further, appropriate thresholds for filtering are recommended. A significant interaction in an analysis of variation model was found when a combination of sequence- and annotation-based filtering methods were explanatory factors, suggesting the use of the combination of filtering methods might be most beneficial.

Resumen
Abstract Research into plant genetics often requires the suppression or complete knockout of gene expression to scientifically validate gene function. In addition, the phenotypes obtained from gene suppression can occasionally have commercial value for plant breeders. Until recently, the methodological choices to achieve these goals fell into two broad types: either some form of RNA-based gene silencing; or the screening of large numbers of natural or induced random genomic mutations. The more recent invention of gene editing as a tool for targeted mutation potentially gives researchers and plant breeders another route to block gene function. RNAi is widely used in animal and plant research and functions to silence gene expression by degrading the target gene transcript. Although RNAi offers unique advantages over genomic mutations, it often leads to the formation of a genetically modified organism (GMO), which for commercial activities has major regulatory and acceptance issues in some regions of the world. Traditional methods of generating genomic mutations are more laborious and uncertain to achieve the desired goals but possess a distinct advantage of not being governed by GMO regulations. Gene editing (GE) technologies have some of the advantages of both RNAi and classical mutation breeding in that they can be designed to give simple knockouts or to modulate gene expression more subtly. GE also has a more complex regulatory position, with some countries treating it as another conventional breeding method whilst the EU defines GE as a technique of genetic modification and applies the normal GMO authorization procedures. This chapter explores the pros and cons of RNAi alongside other methods of modulating gene function.

Resumen
AbstractProbabilistic programming is an approach to reasoning under uncertainty by encoding inference problems as programs. In order to solve these inference problems, probabilistic programming languages (PPLs) employ different inference algorithms, such as sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), or variational methods. Existing research on such algorithms mainly concerns their implementation and efficiency, rather than the correctness of the algorithms themselves when applied in the context of expressive PPLs. To remedy this, we give a correctness proof for SMC methods in the context of an expressive PPL calculus, representative of popular PPLs such as WebPPL, Anglican, and Birch. Previous work have studied correctness of MCMC using an operational semantics, and correctness of SMC and MCMC in a denotational setting without term recursion. However, for SMC inference—one of the most commonly used algorithms in PPLs as of today—no formal correctness proof exists in an operational setting. In particular, an open question is if the resample locations in a probabilistic program affects the correctness of SMC. We solve this fundamental problem, and make four novel contributions: (i) we extend an untyped PPL lambda calculus and operational semantics to include explicit resample terms, expressing synchronization points in SMC inference; (ii) we prove, for the first time, that subject to mild restrictions, any placement of the explicit resample terms is valid for a generic form of SMC inference; (iii) as a result of (ii), our calculus benefits from classic results from the SMC literature: a law of large numbers and an unbiased estimate of the model evidence; and (iv) we formalize the bootstrap particle filter for the calculus and discuss how our results can be further extended to other SMC algorithms.

Resumen
AbstractA key open problem with multiparty session types (MPST) concerns their expressiveness: current MPST have inflexible choice, no existential quantification over participants, and limited parallel composition. This precludes many real protocols to be represented by MPST. To overcome these bottlenecks of MPST, we explore a new technique using weak bisimilarity between global types and endpoint types, which guarantees deadlock-freedom and absence of protocol violations. Based on a process algebraic framework, we present well-formed conditions for global types that guarantee weak bisimilarity between a global type and its endpoint types and prove their check is decidable. Our main practical result, obtained through benchmarks, is that our well-formedness conditions can be checked orders of magnitude faster than directly checking weak bisimilarity using a state-of-the-art model checker.

Resumen
In this paper we introduce Strategy Logic with simple goals (SL[SG]), a fragment of Strategy Logic that strictly extends the well-known Alternating-time Temporal Logic ATL by introducing arbitrary quantification over the agents' strategies. Our motivation comes from game-theoretic applications, such as expressing Stackelberg equilibria in games, coercion in voting protocols, as well as module checking for simple goals. Most importantly, we prove that the model checking problem for SL[SG] is PTIME-complete, the same as ATL. Thus, the extra expressive power comes at no computational cost as far as verification is concerned.

Resumen
In Ontology-Based Data Access (OBDA), a domain ontology is linked to the data sources of an organization in order to query, integrate and manage data through the concepts and relations of the domain of interest, thus abstracting from the technical details of the data layer implementation. While the great majority of contributions in OBDA in the last decade have been concerned with the issue of computing the answers of queries expressed over the ontology, recent papers address a different problem, namely the one of providing suitable abstractions of data services, i.e., characterizing or explaining the semantics of queries over the sources in terms of queries over the domain ontology. Current works on this subject are based on expressing abstractions in terms of unions of conjunctive queries (UCQs) over the ontology. In this paper we advocate the use of a non-monotonic language for this task. As a first contribution, we present a simple extension of UCQs with non-monotonic features, and show that non-monotonicity provides more expressive power in characterizing the semantics of data services. A second contribution is to prove that, similarly to the case of monotonic abstractions, depending on the expressive power of the languages used to specify the various components of the OBDA system, there are cases where neither perfect nor approximated abstractions exist for a given data service. As a third contribution, we single out interesting special cases where the existence of abstractions is guaranteed, and we present algorithms for computing such abstractions in these cases.

Resumen
The Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) is arguably the first implementation of the Belief--Desire--Intention (BDI) approach to agent programming. PRS remains extremely influential, directly or indirectly inspiring the development of subsequent BDI agent programming languages. However, perhaps surprisingly given its centrality in the BDI paradigm, PRS lacks a formal operational semantics, making it difficult to determine its expressive power relative to other agent programming languages. This paper takes a first step towards closing this gap, by giving a formal semantics for a significant fragment of PRS. We prove key properties of the semantics relating to PRS-specific programming constructs, and show that even the fragment of PRS we consider is strictly more expressive than the plan constructs found in typical BDI languages.

Resumen
A rabbit polyclonal antibody which was monospecific for thromboplastin (TP) apoprotein from human brain according to a number of criteria was used to screen two human placenta cDNA libraries in the expression vector λgt11, one randomly primed and one oligo-dT primed, by the method of Young and Davis. 23 positive clones expressing TP related antigen were isolated and plaque purified. DNA from the different clones was isolated and the TPcDNA inserts released by EcoRl digestion. The inserts could be classified into11 size classes ranging from approx. 300-1100 base pairs. The largest insert (1100 bp) was subcloned intothe plasmid vector pGEM-1. When the nick-translated plasmid (pTP4-l) was used as a probe to screen the phage clones by slot blot hybridization all the 23clones hybridized to the 1100 bp insert. A λgt11TP4 lysogen expressed β-galactosidase- TP4 fusion peptide upon IPTG induction as shown by immunobinging studied using two different antibodies to TP apoprotein: the rabbit antibody originally used to screen the libraries and an antibody raised in goat against human brain TP purified by affinity chromatography on a Factor VII-antiVII-agarose column.

Resumen
Graph neural networks (GNNs) are effective models for representation learning on relational data. However, standard GNNs are limited in their expressive power, as they cannot distinguish graphs beyond the capability of the Weisfeiler-Leman graph isomorphism heuristic. In order to break this expressiveness barrier, GNNs have been enhanced with random node initialization (RNI), where the idea is to train and run the models with randomized initial node features. In this work, we analyze the expressive power of GNNs with RNI, and prove that these models are universal, a first such result for GNNs not relying on computationally demanding higher-order properties. This universality result holds even with partially randomized initial node features, and preserves the invariance properties of GNNs in expectation. We then empirically analyze the effect of RNI on GNNs, based on carefully constructed datasets. Our empirical findings support the superior performance of GNNs with RNI over standard GNNs.

Resumen
Our focus is on a class of Markov chains which have a polyhedral translation invariance property for the transition probabilities. This class can be used to model several applications of interest which feature complexities not found in usual models of queueing networks, for example failure prone manufacturing systems which are operating under hedging point policies, or enhanced wafer fab models featuring batch tools and setups or affine index policies. We present a new family of performance bounds which is more powerful both in expressive capability as well as the quality of the bounds than some earlier approaches.

Resumen
Our goal is to measure the likelihood of the satisfaction of numerical constraints in the absence of prior information. We study expressive constraints, involving arithmetic and complex numerical functions, and even quantification over numbers. Such problems arise in processing incomplete data, or analyzing conditions in programs without a priori bounds on variables. We show that for constraints on n variables, the proper way to define such a measure is as the limit of the part of the n-dimensional ball that consists of points satisfying the constraints, when the radius increases. We prove that the existence of such a limit is closely related to the notion of o-minimality from model theory. Thus, for constraints definable with the usual arithmetic and exponentiation, the likelihood is well defined, but adding trigonometric functions is problematic. We look at computing and approximating such likelihoods for order and linear constraints, and prove an impossibility result for approximating with multiplicative error. However, as the likelihood is a number between 0 and 1, an approximation scheme with additive error is acceptable, and we give it for arbitrary linear constraints.

Resumen
The fuzzy modality probably is interpreted over probabilistic type spaces by taking expected truth values. The arising probabilistic fuzzy description logic is invariant under probabilistic bisimilarity; more informatively, it is non-expansive wrt. a suitable notion of behavioural distance. In the present paper, we provide a characterization of the expressive power of this logic based on this observation: We prove a probabilistic analogue of the classical van Benthem theorem, which states that modal logic is precisely the bisimulation-invariant fragment of first-order logic. Specifically, we show that every formula in probabilistic fuzzy first-order logic that is non-expansive wrt. behavioural distance can be approximated by concepts of bounded rank in probabilistic fuzzy description logic.
