Onychophorans are closely allied to the arthropods and possess a body organisation more similar to Middle Cambrian fossils than to recent arthropods. This means that onychophorans in some respects can be regarded as a model for the last common ancestor to both the Arthropoda and the Onychophora. This thesis mainly deals with the morphology of the head region of the Onychophora, but developmental investigations of the expression of a key regulatory gene, engrailed, are also carried out. The innervation of the head was found to differ from that reported in earlier investigations. The nerves that

Background: Heat-shock proteins of the 70 kDa family (Hsp70s) are essential chaperones required for key cellular functions. In eukaryotes, four subfamilies can be distinguished according to their function and localisation in different cellular compartments: cytosol, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Generally, multiple cytosol-type Hsp70s can be found in metazoans that show either constitutive expression and/or stress-inducibility, arguing for the evolution of different tasks and functions. This thesis is dedicated to two problems arising from geometric control theory, regarding control-affine systems $\dot q= f_0(q)+\sum_{j=1}^m u_j f_j(q)$, where $f_0$ is called the drift. In the first part we extend the concept of complexity of non-admissible trajectories, well understood for sub-Riemannian systems, to this more general case, and find asymptotic estimates. In order to do this, we also prove a result in the same spirit as the Ball-Box theorem for sub-Riemannian systems, in the context of control-affine systems equipped with the L1 cost. Importantly, new temperature and heat flow maps for southwest Queensland were developed that will greatly assist future exploration efforts.

Resumen
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-90).
The fundamental goal of Robust Design is to improve the quality of a product by minimizing the effects of variation. A key contributor to robustness over the long term is R&D. Therefore, a framework is desired to help managers to identify promising improvement paths that a system may undergo, thus helping out in deciding R&D resource allocation. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to a framework for robustness inventions. This contribution

During the hydrogenation stage, the high diffusivity of hydrogen in titanium alloys at elevated temperatures is used to introduce hydrogen into the sample. Hydrogen being a stabilizing element of titanium alloys, lowers the β → (α+ β) transition temperature and

Over the last few decades, body-centered-cubic (bcc) beta (β) titanium alloys have largely been exploited as structural alloys owing to the richness in their microstructural features. These features, which lead to a unique combination of high specific strength and ductility, excellent hardenability, good fatigue performance, and corrosion resistance, make these alloys viable candidates for many applications, including aerospace, automobile, and orthopedic implants. The mechanical properties of these alloys strongly depend on the various phases present; which can be controlled by thermomechanic
