The scope of adaptive phenotypic change within a lineage is shaped by how functional traits evolve. Castes are defining functional traits of adaptive phenotypic change in complex insect societies, and caste evolution is expected to be phylogenetically conserved and developmentally constrained at broad phylogenetic scales. Yet how castes evolve at the species level has remained largely unaddressed. Turtle ant soldiers (genusCephalotes), an iconic example of caste specialization, defend nest entrances by using their elaborately armored heads as living barricades. Across species, soldier morphoty

The influence of the effective metal head height on the HTC (Heat transfer coefficients) in sand casting of A357 aluminum alloy is analyzed here. Different metal heads were used for the same casting process, evaluating the heat transfer at the metal-chill interface. Thermal analysis and inverse modeling techniques were used, based on the temperature measurements at selected locations in the casting and the chill. The experiments were specifically developed for replicating typical sand casting manufacturing conditions. Aluminum was used as the chill material. Evolutions of HTC and heat flow are

Adults of the skink Eumeces laticeps are sexually dimorphic in coloration, body size, head size, and relative head size. Males have larger heads at a given body size than females and the divergence in relative head size is coincident with the size at which sexual maturity is reached. Although there were no differences between sexes in tail loss frequencies, there were substantial differences in frequencies of body and head scars, a consequence of aggressive male–male interactions. Prey size was correlated with body and head size and males tended to eat larger prey items than females. However,

The design complexity of such a head is defined by the activeness of the visual system. This type of spermatozoon is present in Australasian Rattus, together with several other New Guinean genera. Resumen
Invention and improving the methods of ENT examination are closely connected with the technological inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries. The invention of the classical exam head mirror in 1861 and improvement of the manufacturing of compact and powerful sources of light (filament lamps) at the time caused the researchers to create new devices for ENT examination. In particular, a head-mounted electro-mirror was created, the principle of which later became the basis for the development of fiber-optic headlamps. The emergence of powerful halogen and xenon light sources in the mid-20th cent

For tracking multiple targets in a scene, the most common approach is to represent the target in a bounding box and track the whole box as a single entity. However, in the case of humans, the body goes through complex articulation and occlusion that severely deteriorate the tracking performance. In this paper, we argue that instead of tracking the whole body of a target, if we focus on a relatively rigid body organ, better tracking results can be achieved. Based on this assumption, we followed the tracking-by-detection paradigm and generated the target hypothesis of only the spatial locations

Ribosomes are among the largest and most dynamic molecular motors. The structure and dynamics of translation initiation and elongation are reviewed. Three ribosome motions have been identified for initiation and translocation. A swivel motion between the head/beak and the body of the 30S subunit was observed. A tilting dynamic of the head/beak versus the body of the 30S subunit was detected using simulations. A reversible ratcheting motion was seen between the 30S and the 50S subunits that slide relative to one another. The 30S–50S intersubunit contacts regulate translocation. IF2, EF-Tu, and
