Resumen
During and immediately after the First World War the Belgian government developed plans to annex parts of the Netherlands after the war, such as the province of Limburg. How did industrialists in the capital Maastricht respond to these Belgium goals? In this article, I explore the perspectives of an industrialist, a state detective and an economist in this matter. The industrialist was a fierce opponent of annexation, while the state detective was convinced that annexionists, those who were in favour of annexation, should mainly be found among major industrialists. The economist, on the other hand, did not rule out the possibility that some of Maastricht’s traders and industrialists would prefer a connection with Belgium. How did they come to these conclusions and to what extent did their considerations and other sources provide an answer to the research question of this article? Taking both gossip and facts into account, we may conclude that indeed there could have been traders and industrialists who supported the Belgian aspirations and preferred to join Belgium. However, the general claim that, in Maastricht especially, major industrialists were in favour of annexation lacks any factual evidence

Many industrial effluents are discharged to public sewers and are treated in admixture with domestic sewage. The treatment works provides a service, therefore, to industry. The treatment works manager is under the constraint of environmental restrictions on effluent and sludge disposal and the constraint of keeping costs down. Inevitably these constraints are passed onto the industrial discharger. It is very important that the industrialist is treated like a customer and understands the reasons for the constraints. The paper reviews the nature of the services and constraints. It draws on the author's experience in providing a regulation and treatment service to over 2000 industrialists.

Resumen
InDecember 1896 the Industrial Action Committee, a small group of Viennese industrialists, sent a memorandum to all Chambers of Commerce in the Cisleithanian halfof the Habsburg monarchy. Arguing that two decades of internecine ethnic and party strife had allowed agrarians, small artisans, and workers to eat away at the material well-being of the “productive classes” (Stände), the committee asked Austrian industrialists of every ethnic and political persuasion to advocate a proindustry platform at all party nominating conventions. Appended to the appeal, which was printed in German, Czech, Polish, and Italian, was a proposal to found a Bund österreichischer Industrieller (League of Austrian Industrialists, henceforth BöI), an organization that would unite industrialists “without regard to nationality, confession, or party affiliation” in concerted economic-political (wirtschafts-politisch) activity.

Resumen
Purpose: optimizing the reproduction of sheep in the economy of the Rostov region.Materials and methods. 3 groups of disemeters of 50 goals in each were formed. In the first experimental group, the disemeted was in a meticulous manner with a ram-industrialist (artificial kriproporchid), in the second experimental-with a penEexctomed ram-industrialist. In the third (control) group, a producer ram was used. In the first experimental group of a ram-industrialist (artificial kriproporchid) with attached taps were released into a group of sheep twice a day for 1.5-2 hours. In the second experimental group of a penEctomed ram, it was placed in the corral to the disemetery in the morning for 3 hours. In the third group, the lamb producer was constantly with the disemets for two weeks, then he was changed on a new ram i.e. Used the methodology used in the farm. During the experiment, they observed the behavior of animals of all groups. In the experimental groups, after the detection of disemeters in the hunt, their natural insemination of the manufacturer was carried out. Based on the results of the subsequent oster, the effectiveness of the reproduction of sheep was evaluated.Results. The results we get indicate the effectiveness of the reflexological stimulation of the sexual function of females using rams-industry. So in groups where the male industrialists used to hunt and were fruitfully inseminated 96 % and 98 % of the disemeters, respectively. 54 and 53 lambs per 50 uterus were received from them, 6 twin in the first group and 4 in the second. In the control group, with the constant presence of the manufacturer, 82 % of the disemeted were fruitfully inseminated, from which 44 lambs were received by 50 queens, which is explained by an increased load on the male. There was only 3. The third group was only 3. The method of stimulating females with the help of rams-industrialists allows you to increase the amount of offspring and rationally operate the ramps of manufacturers.

Resumen
There is a debate on the exact relationship between capitalist development and democracy. Some maintain that there is a theoretical and empirical affinity between the two, while others have demonstrated that authoritarian regimes have been as able to accommodate capitalist development. A major part of this debate revolves around the economic elite's political preferences, which in some cases is perceived as championing democracy while in others, especially in cases of late-development, as supporting the rise of authoritarianism or, in the least, benefiting from the deficiencies of limited democracy. The shifting position of this elite therefore begs the following question: Is there an instance under capitalist development that makes democracy more appealing to the business classes?
To study this question, I have focused on the case of TUSIAD (Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association), a voluntary association made up of several hundred members and founded by the owners of the largest Turkish corporations, that has in 1997 published a report on democratization in Turkey which promoted major changes to the Turkish state and its institutions. The topic is of relevance to the above debate by presenting a case where individuals that were previously perceived as benefiting from the deficiencies of Turkish democracy and/or were too shy politically were promoting major changes to political life.
In order to understand the process behind this break and the shifting political attitude of the association's members, I have conducted several expert interviews with key actors from TUSIAD and the business community. I have also included a comparison between the case of TUSIAD and the demands of associations in the similar cases of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico in order to further test the generalizability of my case study.
My research and the dissertation suggest that changes in the activities of Turkish industry, characterized by economic development and a greater international integration achieved primarily through the European Union, present a new structure of opportunities and constraints for TUSIAD members. The factors that entrepreneurs perceive as being necessary for staying competitive and manage growingly complex enterprises not only make increased democracy more appealing but also create a tension between a segment of business, which is becoming increasingly formal, and a state that has traditionally depended on its informal ties with societies to strengthen its control.
However, my research reveals that these economic changes are not sufficient to constitute a radical break from the state. To understand the case of TUSIAD it should be taken into account that this has been possible because of the economic elite's increasing autonomy (due partly on endogenous changes and the opportunities that internationalization offers) and relationship to the state. Turkish political tradition has enabled the state and governments to isolate themselves from business more than in other cases studied. In fact, states in my comparative cases have tended to grant greater access to business, except for various periods, and as such affected its propensity to mobilize politically. It is therefore the apparent indifference of the Turkish state towards the needs and power of industry that has affected the attitude and ideology of businesspeople, thus leading to a greater break than what the current literature would predict. In outlining this process, the current dissertation therefore contributes to academic debate by outlining the manner in which a positive relationship between the needs of business classes and democracy develops, while maintaining that whether this will lead to a radical break is determined by state tradition.

Iredale, Norma. "Work-related education in primary schools : a study of industry's attitudes and teacher motivation". Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1226/.

Resumen
Over the last decade there has been a steady growth of work related initiatives in education which have more latterly involved primary schools. There is, however, no clear evidence as to the impact these have made on teachers working with young children. Casual observation would suggest that work-related education remains peripheral in many primary schools and appears to be fragmented even when visible. The reasons for this are unclear but there are indications that certain pressures upon schools along with particular perspectives of teachers and industrialists have proved influential to the decision This study aims to determine what has motivated certain primary school teachers who are positively biased to embark upon work-related education and to ascertain the factors that have informed their views. It also seeks to discover why these teachers feel this aspect of work is important and what they hope to achieve from the activities in which they engage. At the same time the study enquires into the view of industrialists relating to work-related education in primary schools; explores what efforts are being made in this field; and aims to establish what industrialists hope to achieve. The study reveals that the greatest motivation for teachers involved in this study to engage in workrelated education is to prepare young people for life in a rapidly changing world. A positive link is exhibited between teachers who engage in work-related activities and their personal experience of business or industry. It is also revealed that industry, as represented by some of the large corporations, perceive links with primary schools to be essential. These links are, however, less common than links with secondary schools. A lack of some common understanding between educationalists and industrialists as to the outcomes of such endeavours is also disclosed. These points are discussed and a plan of action is offered.

Resumen
This thesis examined the relationships among ecology, economy, and society in the history of Longview, Washington, a planned timber settlement on the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers. It compared the environmental, economic, and social histories of the Cowlitz Indians, American farmers, and urban industrialists that lived there over the past four hundred years. The central argument of the thesis is that human society cannot separate its economic and social organization from its ecology, nor can it reorder the environment without restructuring its economic and social institutions. Three different groups lived in the same physical space, but since they conceived and used the land differently, their societies developed distinct social and economic frameworks. The narrative of the thesis is chronological, tracing environmental, economic, and social change from about 1790 to 1934. During that time, humans gradually transformed a flood plain once dominated by vegetation and wildlife into a paved, sculpted, and densely populated industrial city. This study outlines the major causes and consequences of that transformation for both the land and its inhabitants. A wide range of source material provided the evidence upon which my conclusions were based. In addition to the more conventional historical sources such as diaries, letters, newspapers, memoirs, maps, and census data, I consulted anthropological studies, geological and geographical surveys, ecological reports, agricultural bulletins, and sociological analyses. My findings are presented in Chapters 2 through 5, with chapter 6 summarizing and drawing final conclusions.

Resumen
In recent years, much ofthe political debate in the West, East aud South has focused on the decentralization of responsibilities from the state to private enterprises and NGOs. But what potential is there for local communities to create their own govenlance structures able to deal with issues up till recently seen as the responsibility of the state? In this thesis, answer to this question is sought by analyzing two case studies from the semi-arid Coimbatore-region in South India from an institutionai perspective. One case concerns the efforts to involve farmers in irrigation water management in the Lower Bhavani Project, while the other focuses on the pressure on textile industrialists in Tirupur city to collectively treat their polluted effluent water. In both cases, the new distribution ofresponsibilities required that groups ofwater users would succeed in establishing new entities for collective action among themselves strong enough to prevent free-riding on a massive scale. Overcoming three main obstacles proved crucial in this process; meeting coordination costs, re-defining the notion of free-riding among resource users, and meeting motivation costs. Factors both within and outsicte the loeal community affected the degree ofsuccess. The distribution and lise of economic, moral and physical power between various actors and the interconnectedness between local and external institutions proved crucial for the establishrnent oflocal govemance stmctures. Moreover, the historical relation between the respective user group and the state has to a large extent affected the goals and strategies oflocal entities of eolleetive action. Clearly, resource management problems at localleve1 can not be solved by simply decentralizing responsibilities from the state to groups ofresource users. Rather, the state could playan important role by initiating, supporting and directing slich local entities of collective action.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the political evolution of the industrial bourgeoisie in Peru. It argues that the industrial bourgeoisie has been undergoing a rapid and dynamic process of economic development and political formation in the period since the reforms of 1968 which reduced the power of the landed oligarchy. The experience of the Garcia government (1985-1990) is used as a case study to illustrate the changing role of industrialists in the Peruvian development process. The Garcia government, a populist government with reformist tendencies and redistributive objectives, nonetheless attempted to forge an alliance with the industrial bourgeoisie as part of its heterodox economic strategy. This approach was later abandoned, as the government attempted to gain greater autonomy from the bourgeoisie through the expropriation of the financial system. This thesis examines the way in which the industrial bourgeoisie organises itself to intervene in politics, and considers the political and economic factors which acted to stimulate this political development. In this period, industrialists demonstrated an increased ability to forge alliances with other fractions of the bourgeoisie to act collectively in the political sphere; first, through the formation of a confederation of industrial organisations known as CONFIEP, and second, through the successful opposition to the expropriation of the financial system in 1987. This thesis concludes, therefore, that the Garcia government acted as a catalyst for the political development of the industrial bourgeoisie which by 1990 had become a more prominent social and political actor.

Resumen
The role of nineteenth-century industrialists in British imperial expansion and governance has been debated for many years. Major recent interpretations, such as Peter Cain and Tony Hopkins's 'gentlemanly capitalism' and Gary Magee and Andrew Thompson's 'cultural economy', have conceived industrialists' involvement mostly in terms of promoting manufactured exports. Industrialists' reliance on imported raw materials has however been comparatively neglected. Using the case of study of raw cotton, nineteenth-century Britain's most valuable industrial commodity import, this thesis revises how we understand the contribution Lancashire industrialists made to the formation of imperial policy. Analysing examples from the formal and informal empire in India, Egypt, and sub-Saharan Africa, it shows that interactions between technology, business lobbying, and ideas of political economy fostered cotton-growing schemes. Fluctuations in the quantity and, significantly, the quality of cotton supplies fostered interest in reforming or creating new supply chains, promoting the formation of business associations, pre-eminently the Cotton Supply Association and the British Cotton Growing Association. These associations lobbied governments to make supply chains more suited to Lancashire technological systems, and led to the promotion of standardised cotton types through the export of European knowledge and skills, the erection of processing machinery and transportation systems, and the regulation of colonial labour. The main argument is that if the focus is shifted to supplies rather than markets, industrialists, directly and indirectly, were often important influences on imperial governance and overseas economic change. While fiscal and financial considerations often provided the framework for government-backed cotton-growing schemes, because cotton was a complex commodity officials had to implement industrialists' advice to create supply chains that would serve these ends. By providing fresh insights for understanding the relationship between supply chains, business mobilisation, and European imperialism, this thesis lays the foundations for further much-needed work on the 'supply-side' economics of global empires.

Resumen
Abstract More than any other group of New Yorkers, industrialists made the Republican Party controversial in July 1863. While the Union League Club mer chants helped to give the Republican Party of New York City its aristocratic, nativist, and coercive style, it was the industrialists and their aggressive brand of Republicanism that the draft rioters knew best. Industrialists were often the employers of the midweek rioters. They were the Republicans the rioters encountered six days a week at the shop and perhaps on the Sabbath in the person of a visitor from the charity society. It stands to reason that the industrialists did much to shape the rioters’ image of Republicanism as un-just and intrusive authority. How the industrialists came to be so aggressive-and how they made the Republican Party a magnet for political and social dispute-provide the final ingredients in the history of the origins of the July crisis.

Allard, Alexandre, Nicolas Fischer, Ian Smith, Peter Harris y Leslie Pendrill. "Risk calculations for conformity assessment in practice". En 19th International Congress of Metrology (CIM2019), editado por Sandrine Gazal. Les Ulis, France: EDP Sciences, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/metrology/201916001.

Resumen
In 2012, the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology (JCGM) published novel guidance on the consideration of measurement uncertainty for decision-making in conformity assessment (JCGM 106:2012). The two situations of making a wrong decision are considered: the risk of accepting a non-conforming item, denoted as the customer risk, and the risk of rejecting a conforming item, denoted as the producer risk. In 2017, the revision of ISO 17025 obliged calibration and testing laboratories to “document the decision rule employed, taking into account the level of risk (such as false accept and false reject and statistical assumptions) associated with the decision rule employed, and apply the decision rule” in the context of the decision made about the conformity of an item. However, JCGM 106:2012 can in some cases be perceived as quite difficult to apply for non-statisticians as it mainly relies on calculations involving probability distributions. In order to facilitate uptake of the methodology of JCGM 106:2012, EURAMET is funding the project EMPIR 17SIP05 “CASoft” (2018 – 2020), involving the National Measurement Institutes from France, Sweden and the UK. The objective is to make the methodology accessible to organisations involved in decision-making in conformity assessment: calibration and testing laboratories, industrialists and regulation authorities. Where the customer or producer are concerned, there are two kinds of risks arising from measurement uncertainty: specific risk which concerns the risk of an incorrect decision for a particular item and global risk which is the risk of an incorrect decision for any item chosen at random. Both kinds of risk may involve prior information, taken into account through a so-called prior probability distribution, introducing the concept of a Bayesian evaluation of the risks. If a calibration and testing laboratory performing the measurement has difficulty accessing prior information, it is likely that the industrialist in control of production processes will have some idea of the quality of the items produced. In this paper, the two problems of estimating the specific and global risks are addressed. The consideration of prior information is also discussed through a practical example as well as the use of software implementing the methodology, which will be made publically available at the end of the project.

Resumen
One of the essential elements for safe operation of a nuclear licensed site is the availability to the licensee in sufficient numbers of suitably qualified and experienced people to carry out and manage the operations and associated design work. In the last few years, there have been a number of reports to illustrate the recent and current problems of recruiting such people to work in the traditional locations for nuclear personnel in the North-West of England. Concern for the immediate future is exacerbated by a peculiar demographic of the people currently employed in positions demanding higher level skills. In response to the growing realization that there is an impending skills gap that needs to be filled, Sellafield Limited’s Talent Management team (and latterly with support of the NDA) have been working with a number of education and training providers to put in place bespoke courses aimed at overcoming this shortage. In the absence of a steady stream of willing graduates from technical and management courses, the primary strategy has been to encourage life-long learning and up-skilling amongst its employees, targeting those who, for whatever reason upon leaving school, missed their opportunity to study and progress to train at a high level, but who possess that potential and have now developed a keenness to proceed with that study in later life. One Foundation Degree has been selected for development of a unique approach to higher education. The work of University of Central Lancashire and its West-Cumbrian education and training partners has featured as a case study in other media, but this paper reports on a fresh development within that work: co-delivery. Co-delivery relates to a partnership of educationalists and industrialists, with an emphasis on industrial numbers on the course development steering group. The means by which a significant proportion of the course is strongly workplace related are presented and the benefits and problems that this introduces are discussed. The course uses the industry as a vehicle to communicate concepts and develop problem-solving skills. Rather than the major vocational aspects being confined to just a few ‘workplace’ modules, the industry permeates all modules and co-delivery is part of a good many. A report is also made on the areas of provision where the major capability and expertise is located in just a few industrialists; and how that aspect is learned within a co-delivery course.

Resumen
The Glorious Revolution of 1688/1689 set in train changes in English political and economic culture that acted as a significant catalyst for the development of deep copper mining in Cornwall. The adoption of improved water engines and, latterly, atmospheric engines was fundamental in meeting the drainage challenges faced as miners delved ever deeper in their search for copper ore. The increasing application of pumping technology required significant capital investment which was not available from inside Cornwall. Much of the capital to develop copper mining was supplied by Bristol merchants and industrialists who were benefiting from an economic boom occasion by the aforementioned economic and political changes. Most notable was the deregulation of the slave trade which allowed Bristol to eclipse London as England's primary slaving port turning Bristol into an economic powerhouse. A less quantifiable but nonetheless important factor was a growth in confidence in the stability of the post-revolution economy and amongst the entrepreneurial classes giving them the confidence to invest in Cornish deep mining.

Resumen
In the past twenty years, a number of resources and tools to support inclusive design have been developed. However, the impact of these resources and tools on industry is not evident — few industrialists have been using them in practice. Investigations into industry have identified unmet needs, for example, the lack of appropriate user data relating to inclusive design. The fundamental problem is that few resources and tools have been developed based on rigorous requirements capture. In fact, many of them were developed only because the developers think the information could be useful. It is essential to prepare a detailed requirements list when clarifying the task at the product planning stage. This is also true for developing resources and tools for inclusive design. Requirements capture plays an important role in identifying real needs from users and developing appropriate methods of support for them. This paper starts with a survey of available resources and tools for inclusive design, and a discussion on their merits and deficiencies in respect to industry application. A number of methods are employed for the requirements capture for an inclusive design toolkit, which leads to a consistent result. An outline of the toolkit is also presented.

Resumen
The 4I4U project, which runs through 2022, aims to engage the community of citizens made up of students between the ages of 15 to 23 in the urban mobility of the future while empowering them to become actors of change who can participate in the development and evolution of their city. Led by a European Consortium composed of two cities, Barcelona in Spain and Toulouse in France, as well as education entities from high school to universities and clusters of companies in the field of urban mobility, and co-funded by the EIT Urban Mobility, the main objectives of 4I4U focus on raising awareness among young citizens in the context of urban mobility, developing their capabilities to become actors, highlighting their needs and finally creating a methodology and an environment that help students from ideation to action for the mobility of the future. The objectives of 4I4U are achieved by planning a set of seminars, round tables and brainstorming sessions to raise awareness or understanding of different aspects of urban mobility. To move from ideation to action, small groups of students design and produce a first ideation to understand and be able to project themselves into the proposed solution. This activity will be carried out under the mentoring of cities and industrialists, using the means of training institutions.

Resumen
This article discusses the effects of simulation games in the education of students and the skills and abilities that they obtained after participating in discipline-based on the online or outline simulation programs. These applications may be individual or components software of e-learning platforms. Games-based learning has captured the interest of educationalists and industrialists who seek to exploit the characteristics of computer games as they are perceived by some to be a potentially effective approach for teaching and learning. The type of the activity to the students in enhancing cooperation and constructing higher responsibility is games. A simple game can be able to improve cooperation and social ability of the member; to practice communication; and to improve emotional management. One more this simulation games can development leadership style of the participants. This research shows a link between the effects of simulation programs and performance of the simulation game. Simulating various aspects of professional environment and real industrial processes, allows to train students apply the obtained theoretical knowledge and solve problems emerging in their professional activity. For the design of educational games, the results suggest that the challenge of the game should be able to keep up with the learners growing abilities and learning in order to endorse continued learning in game-based learning environments. The link between students developmental (formative) assessment opportunities over the course of the simulation, explaining assessment criteria and ways that students can improve their performance, requiring students to undertake reflection on their learning and outcomes, and ensuring that higher order thinking skills are engaged.

Resumen
The Grove City College (GCC) European Study Center (ESC) is a program that allows mechanical and electrical engineering students to study abroad in the junior and senior year fall semester, respectively, and graduate in four years. The ESC is activity partners with a local institution called Oniris, which specializes in food science engineering, and veterinary science (an affiliate with the French Ministry of Agriculture). Electrical engineering students that participate in the program carry out their yearlong capstone design project (Senior Experience in Electrical Design (SEED)) in partnership with Oniris. For the 2016–2017 academic year, participating electrical engineering students completed a project titled Ultra-Low-Cost Flexible Sensor Array, or “Low-Cost Array” (LCA), designed for commercial tunnel-style ovens. The LCA features low cost ($200), flexible programmability, and ease of use (based on the widely available Arduino). The purpose of the project was to develop a low-cost data-logger to operate inside tunnel-style ovens to record temperature from thermocouples (and other analog signals, i.e. heat flux) for thirty minutes in an environment up to 250 °C. This study evaluates the LCA compared to other data-logging systems, and its performance in high temperature environments by a series of experiments. In addition, an idea of its commercialization potential was explored by interviewing industrialists and academics on-site. Experimental results showed that: (1) data logged from the system were close to values recorded by current systems used for both temperature and heat flux measurements, and (2) the system performed well at 240 °C for thirty minutes (maximum temperature of oven). In addition, the interviews revealed that although most interest was in a tunnel-style oven data-logger, it seems feasible to incorporate changes to satisfy needs for other markets, especially those of a general-purpose data-logger.

"Reducing Adsorption of a Gemini Surfactant on Carbonate Rocks Using Low Salinity Water". En Gas & Oil Technology Showcase and Conference. SPE, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/214177-ms.

Resumen
Abstract Surfactants are widely employed in chemical enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) technique. The economics of a cEOR project is directly impacted by the amount of surfactant loss caused by adsorption on a rock. Therefore, surfactant adsorption reduction is imperative. Both static and dynamic adsorption experiments were conducted to test the adsorption reduction of a novel Gemini surfactant on Indiana limestone. This novel surfactant is tolerant to high-salinity and high-temperature environments. Low salinity water was made by diluting sea water ten times. The salinity of Low salinity water was 6771 ppm. Rock characterization was performed first using XRD. Static adsorption tests were run using a crushed rock sample. Whereas core flood experiments were conducted to determine the dynamic adsorption behavior. High-performance liquid chromatography integrated with an evaporative light scattering detector was employed to calculate the unknown concentration of the surfactant. The effect of both high and low salinity water along with Gemini surfactant was investigated on the static adsorption of Gemini surfactant on Indiana limestone. It was shown that high salinity conditions result in the adsorption reduction in comparison with Gemini surfactant in deionized water. However, the use of low salinity water in the aqueous solution of Gemini surfactant further results in reducing surfactant adsorption. Dynamic adsorption test on Indiana limestone was found consistent with static tests. The ultimate reduced adsorption value of Gemini surfactant on Indiana limestone was found to be 0.11 mg/g-rock using low salinity conditions in dynamic experiments. Such low value lies under the economic limit, making a chemical EOR process efficient and economical. The novelty of this work is the use of low-salinity water in reducing the adsorption of a Gemini surfactant on Indiana limestone. The use of such a technique helps industrialists and researchers in designing an efficient and economical chemical EOR process.

The low part of de Uruguay river is the limit between Uruguay and Argentina. Nowadays, cartography of both nations show the other side as an almost empty territory. However, this was not always like that. Over time, the Uruguay River joins both margins and supports a territorial structure, strongly marked by geography. From the private and public fields, missionaries and industrialists, the Spanish Crown first and the new nations later, stimulate and execute processes of occupation. This research explores the past and present of this territory, involving transformations and its realization with the origin of the decisions that cause and materialize them. Concludes that the river does not structure a single territory, but several, whose boundaries correspond to variable geometries, formed by the confluence of diverse strategies of domain, occupation, separation or integration, taken from outside the low Uruguay or from the various cultures which have inhabited it.

Resumen
This work provides an institutional, legal and policy review of crucial aspects of land records modernisation systems in Gujarat. Recognising the significance of land and its management for the state economy, Gujarat was among the early states to computerise its land records and processes and integrate them. In 2009, the state introduced resurveys using modern technology, which resulted in promulgation of updated records in more than sixty percent of villages, before being paused in 2018. Apart from political leadership, administrative initiatives such as documenting procedures and operational guidelines, incentivising of regular progress and reporting, and regular capacity building helped the state in making a significant progress. Gujarat is among the most urbanised and industrialised states in the country, and this volume presents case studies on the state of land and property records in urban and industrial areas, and the attempts to modernise them.

Due to strong filial piety, parents(-in-law) play an important role in their adult daughters’ fertility decisions in Vietnam; women feel pressured to fulfil their duties to produce a male descendant for the family. However, rapid urbanisation and industrialisation mean that multigenerational households are becoming less common, despite having been the standard household structure for centuries. Based on the 2020–21 Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, we investigate if women who coreside with the parental generation are more likely to desire additional children. In an industrialised economy, grandparents may be an important source of childcare while simultaneously exerting pressure on their adult children to have additional children. Further, we explore the association of the sex of previous child(ren) to capture the pressure associated with son preference. Multivariate regressions reveal an association between coresiding with parents and the desire for a second child, regardless of the sex of the first child. Among women with two children, third-child desires do not appear to be associated with coresiding with parents but are substantially related to having two daughters. Given the strong two-child norm in Vietnam and previous policies implying negative consequences for parents with three or more children, few women show a desire for a third child. Those women who report a desire for a third child mostly have two daughters, reflecting societal norms about the need for a male heir.

Resumen
For many decades in Tunisia, there has been a robust link between natural resource management and contentious national and local politics. These disputes manifest in the form of protests, sit-ins, the disruption of production and distribution and legal suits on the one hand, and corporate and government response using coercive and concessionary measures on the other. Residents of resource-rich areas and their allies protest the inequitable distribution of their local natural wealth and the degradation of their health, land, water, soil and air. They contest a dynamic that tends to bring greater benefit to Tunisia’s coastal metropolitan areas. Natural resource exploitation is also a source of livelihoods and the contentious politics around them have, at times, led to somewhat more equitable relationships. The most important actors in these contentious politics include citizens, activists, local NGOs, local and national government, international commercial interests, international NGOs and multilateral organisations. These politics fit into wider and very longstanding patterns of wealth distribution in Tunisia and were part of the popular alienation that drove the uprising of 2011. In many ways, the dynamic of the contentious politics is fundamentally unchanged since prior to the uprising and protests have taken place within the same month of writing of this paper. Looking onto this scene, commentators use the frame of margins versus centre (‘marginalization’), and also apply the lens of labour versus capital. If this latter lens is applied, not only is there continuity from prior to 2011, there is continuity with the colonial era when natural resource extraction was first industrialised and internationalised. In these ways, the management of Tunisia’s natural wealth is a significant part of the country’s serious political and economic challenges, making it a major factor in the street politics unfolding at the time of writing.
