Resumen
A mathematical model for description of the sorption capacity of ion exchangers on alkaline compounds protonizable in aqueous solutions (exemplified by ammonia, mono-, diand triethylamine) was proposed. The Henry’s constants for these substances were experimentally determined. The model accounts for the concentration and acid-base properties of the sorbate, relative air humidity, acid-base properties and exchange capacity of the ion exchanger, as well as spatial availability of functional groups for interaction under conditions of limited permeability of polymeric ion exchanger. The applicability of the model is illustrated by processing the experimental results on the sorption of ammonia and ethylamines by fibrous carboxylic and sulfonic cation exchangers. Good agreement between the calculated and experimental data is observed.

Resumen
A novel nanozirconium tungstovanadate that was assigned as a cation exchanger was synthetized using sol-gel preparation technique. The response of synthesis parameter variation on the properties of the produced ion exchanger was elucidated. The reactant molar ratio, gelation temperature, and HCl concentration have been optimized to attain cation exchanger with high ion exchange capacity and lead ion sorption. The most proper prepared sample has been chemically and physically characterized using different techniques. The ion exchange capacity of this sample was 2.5 meq/g and it recoded 96% lead ion sorption. The effects of the different processing parameters that affect lead sorption process have been investigated by a single factor method. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to the experimental data to examine the lead uptake mechanism.

Resumen
The downstream processing for the separation and purification of lactic acid is a hot research area in the bio-refinery field due to its continuous growing market in different sectors, such as the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors. In this work, the use of ion-exchange technology for lactic acid recovery is proposed. For that, four anion exchange resins with different polymer structures and functional groups were tested (A100, MN100, A200E and MP64). The sorption process was optimized by the Box–Behnken factorial design, and the experimental data obtained in the sorption process were analyzed by using the response surface methodology and fitted at different isotherms and kinetics models. Moreover, regenerant type, contact time and solid/liquid ratio were evaluated in the desorption process. Results showed that the best resin for lactic acid removal was A100, at pH = 4, with a resin/lactic acid solution ratio of 0.15 g/mL during a maximum of 1 h, achieving 85% of lactic acid removal. Moreover, equilibrium data sorption of lactic acid onto A100 resin was fitted by a Langmuir isotherm and by a kinetic model of a pseudo-second order. In addition, in the desorption process, it was stablished that a resin/regenerant ratio of 0.15 g/mL during 30 min with 0.1 M of NaOH solution provided the best results (4.45 ± 0.08 mg/g).

Resumen
Zeolite N is a synthetic zeolite of the EDI framework family from the more than 200 known zeolite types. Previous experimental laboratory and field data show that zeolite N has a high capacity for exchange of ions. Computational modelling and simulation techniques are effective tools that help explain the atomic-scale behaviour of zeolites under different processing conditions and allow comparison with experiment. In this study, the ion exchange behaviour of synthetic zeolite N in an aqueous environment is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The exchange mechanism of K+ extra-framework cations with alkaline and alkaline-earth cations NH4+, Li+, Na+, Rb+, Cs+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ is explored in different crystallographic directions inside the zeolite N structure. Moreover, the effect of different framework partial charges on MD simulation results obtained from different DFT calculations are examined. The results show that the diffusion and exchange of cations in zeolite N are affected by shape and size of channels controlling the ion exchange flow as well as the nature of cation, ionic size and charge density.

Resumen
This manuscript describes the synthesis of dimethylethanolamine (DMEA)-grafted anion exchange membrane (AEM) by incorporating dimethylethanolamine as ion-exchange content into the polymer matrix via the solution casting method. The synthesis of the DMEA-grafted AEM was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The prepared DMEA-grafted AEM exhibited higher thermal stability, homogeneous morphology, water uptake (WR) of 115%, and an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.70 meq/g. It was used for the adsorptive removal of methyl orange (MO) from an aqueous solution via batch processing. The effect of several operating factors, including contact time, membrane dosage, initial concentration of aqueous dye solution, and temperature on the percentage discharge of MO and adsorption capacity, was evaluated. Experimental data for adsorption of MO onto the DMEA-grafted AEM was analyzed with two parameter and three parameter nonlinear adsorption isotherm models but fitted best using a nonlinear Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption kinetics were studied by using several models, and attained results showed that experimental data fitted well to pseudo-second-order kinetics. A thermodynamic study showed that adsorption of MO onto the prepared DMEA-grafted AEM was an endothermic process. Moreover, it was a feasible and spontaneous process.

Resumen
AbstractFour methods for 90Sr separation from spent ion-exchange resin samples were carried out, offering a useful methodology to achieve interferences free 90Sr fractions. The four methods consist in resin sample decomposition, pre-treatment and selective separation of 90Sr by using: (a) a single chromatographic extraction process, (b) double chromatographic extraction, (c) a single chromatographic extraction process followed in sequence by two precipitations, and (d) ion-exchange chromatography, followed by extraction chromatography and precipitation. Mineralization by microwave acid digestion and the four 90Sr separation methods thoroughly presented are available. Data processing methods (adjustable modified efficiency tracing – a new improved approach for the efficiency tracing LSC technique, non-linear regression and α-β discrimination) to obtain the activities values of α, β-γ, pure β emitters and the evaluation of chemical recovery yield of strontium were presented. A discussion about activity assessment in 90Sr purified fractions, providing a convincing argument to support the accuracy of the 90Sr separation methods, is also offered.

Resumen
The precursor for the acid-stimulating hormone gastrin provides a useful model for studies of post-translational processing because defined sites of cleavage, amidation, sulphation and phosphorylation occur within a dodecapeptide sequence. The factors determining these post-translational processing events are still poorly understood. We have used brefeldin A, which disrupts transport from rough endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi complex, to examine the mechanisms of cleavage, phosphorylation and sulphation of rat progastrin-derived peptides. Biosynthetic products were detected after immunoprecipitation using antibodies specific for the extreme C-terminus of progastrin, followed by reversed-phase and ion-exchange h.p.l.c. Gastrin cells incorporated [3H]tyrosine, [32P]phosphate and [35S]sulphate into both progastrin and its extreme C-terminal tryptic (nona-) peptide. Ion-exchange chromatography resolved four forms of the C-terminal tryptic fragment of progastrin which differed in whether they were phosphorylated at Ser96, sulphated at Tyr103, both or neither. The specific activity of [3H]tyrosine in the peak that was both phosphorylated and sulphated was higher than in the others. Brefeldin A inhibited the appearance of [3H]tyrosine-labelled C-terminal tryptic fragment but there was an accumulation of labelled progastrin and a peptide corresponding to the C-terminal 46 residues of progastrin. Brefeldin A also inhibited incorporation of 32P and 35S into both progastrin and its C-terminal fragment. Thus phosphorylation of Ser96, sulphation of Tyr103 and cleavage at Arg94-Arg95 depend on passage of newly synthesized progastrin along the secretory pathway; as brefeldin A is thought to act proximal to the trans-Golgi, these processing steps would appear to occur distal to this point. The data also indicate that the stores of unphosphorylated C-terminal tryptic fragment are not available for phosphorylation, implying that this modification occurs proximal to the secretory granule; cleavage is known to occur in the secretory granule which suggests that it occurs after phosphorylation.

March, Alan Charles. "Computer automation of a novel ion-exchange process for the simultaneous recovery of lysozyme and avidin from chicken egg albumen". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29660.

Texto completo
Resumen
A three-column ion-exchange system was designed, fabricated and computer-automated to accommodate a novel 'elution looping' process developed by Dr. Tim Durance (U.B.C. Department of Food Science) during his doctoral studies on the recovery of lysozyme and avidin. This processing technique enhances the simultaneous recovery of these two pharmaceutically important proteins from chicken egg albumen. The processing system prototype was sized to handle throughput rates between approximately five and 300 liters per day of albumen to facilitate both laboratory and small commercial scale work. Very efficient use is made of the ion-exchange resin due to a two-column cascaded feed arrangement. The processing control software was designed to provide flexibility and ease of operation in setting up new and existing method files, allowing for the selection of any column or group of columns to use and providing a 'staged-shutdown' approach toward handling columns fouled with congealed albumen during unattended operation. This approach attempts to maximize the productivity of the system even when one or two of the columns has become fouled with congealed albumen.

Heijmans, Franciscus R. C. "A computer simulation of the pulmonary microvascular exchange system - alveolar flooding". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25099.

Texto completo
Resumen
Previous models of the pulmonary microvascular exchange system (28,29) have been restricted to the study of fluid and solute exchange between the pulmonary microcirculation, interstitial tissue space, and lymphatics. In severe pulmonary edema the capacities of the lymphatics and tissue space are exceeded. The fluid and solutes entering the interstitium from the circulation will, then, be transported Into the air space. The accumulation of fluid in the air space impairs the diffusion of gas (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the air space and blood circulation; if this fluid accumulation is excessive a patient's health may be compromised. In this thesis severe pulmonary edema is studied by including the air space as a fourth compartment into the interstitial model developed by Bert and Pinder (29). A computer simulation of the four compartment (alveolar) model was developed on a digital computer. Tests of the model were made to study the effect of the parameters which were introduced into the alveolar model. These parameters include: a filtration coefficient that describes the alveolar membrane fluid conductivity, an extravascular fluid volume that represents the point at which fluid enters the air space, the alveolar fluid pressure at the onset of fluid flow into the air space, and the rate of alveolar fluid pressure change relative to an alveolar fluid volume change. For each case the dynamic response of the exchange system was recorded. In addition, two types of pulmonary edema were simulated: 1) hydrostatically induced edema, and 2) edema induced by changes to the fluid and solute permeability of the porous membrane separating the circulatory and interstitial compartments. Due to the limited data available on the interaction of the air space with the other three compartments of the pulmonary microvascular exchange system, only partial verification of the appropriate range of values of the alveolar model parameters and the predictions of the simulations was possible. The alveolar model developed in this thesis is an initial approximation but appears to provide a satisfactory approach for the inclusion of the air space in the pulmonary microvascular exchange system.

Martello, Rosanna. "Cloud storage and processing of automotive Lithium-ion batteries data for RUL prediction". Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021.

Buscar texto completo
Resumen
Lithium-ion batteries are the ideal choice for electric and hybrid vehicles, but the high cost and the relatively short life represent an open issue for automotive industries. For this reason, the estimation of battery Remaining Useful Life (RUL) and the State of Health (SoH) are primary goals in the automotive sector. Cloud computing provides all the resources necessary to store, process and analyze all sensor data coming from connected vehicles in order to develop Predictive Maintenance tasks. This project describes the work done during my internship at FEV Italia s.r.l. The aims were designing an architecture for managing the data coming from a vehicle fleet and developing algorithms able to predict the SoH and the RUL of Lithium-ion batteries. The designed architecture is based on three Amazon Web Services: Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon Simple Storage Service and Amazon Relational Database Service. After data processing and the feature extraction, the RUL and SoH estimations are performed by training two Neural Networks.

Resumen
Recent progress in analytical chemistry instrumentation has increased the amount of data available for analysis. This progress has been encompassed by computational improvements, that have enabled new possibilities to analyze larger amounts of data. These two factors have allowed to analyze more complex samples in multiple life science fields, such as biology, medicine, pharmacology, or food science. One of the techniques that has benefited from these improvements is Gas Chromatography - Ion Mobility Spectrometry (GC-IMS). This technique is useful for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in complex samples. Ion Mobility Spectrometry is an analytical technique for characterizing chemical substances based on the velocity of gas-phase ions in an electric field. It is able to detect trace levels of volatile chemicals reaching for some analytes ppb concentrations. While the instrument has moderate selectivity it is very fast in the analysis, as an ion mobility spectrum can be acquired in tenths of milliseconds. As it operates at ambient pressure, it is found not only as laboratory instrumentation but also in-site, to perform screening applications. For instance it is often used in airports for the detection of drugs and explosives. To enhance the selectivity of the IMS, especially for the analysis of complex samples, a gas chromatograph can be used for sample pre-separation at the expense of the length of the analysis. While there is better instrumentation and more computational power, better algorithms are still needed to exploit and extract all the information present in the samples. In particular, GC-IMS has not received much attention compared to other analytical techniques. In this work we address some of the data analysis issues for GC-IMS: With respect to the pre-processing, we explore several baseline estimation methods and we suggest a variation of Asymmetric Least Squares, a popular baseline estimation technique, that is able to cope with signals that present large peaks or large dynamic range. This baseline estimation method is used in Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry signals as well, as it suits both techniques. Furthermore, we also characterize spectral misalignments in a several months long study, and propose an alignment method based on monotonic cubic splines for its correction. Based on the misalignment characterization we propose an optimal time span between consecutive calibrant samples. We the explore the usage of Multivariate Curve Resolution methods for the deconvolution of overlapped peaks and their extraction into pure components. We propose the use of a sliding window in the retention time axis to extract the pure components from smaller windows. The pure components are tracked through the windows. This approach is able to extract analytes with lower response with respect to MCR, compounds that have a low variance in the overall matrix Finally we apply some of these developments to real world applications, on a dataset for the prevention of fraud and quality control in the classification of olive oils, measured with GC-IMS, and on data for biomarker discovery of prostate cancer by analyzing the headspace of urine samples with a GC-MS instrument.

AbstractIn the digital bio-economy like in many other sectors, standards play an important role. With “Standards”, we refer here to the protocols that describe how data and the data-exchange are defined to enable digital exchange of data between devices. This chapter evaluates how Big Data, cloud processing, and app stores together form a new market that allows exploiting the full potential of geospatial data. This chapter focuses on the essential cornerstones that help make Big Data processing a more seamless experience for bioeconomy data. The described approach is domain-independent, thus can be applied to agriculture, fisheries, and forestry as well as earth observation sciences, climate change research, or disaster management. This flexibility is essential when it comes to addressing real world complexities for any domain, as no single domain has sufficient data available within its own limits to tackle the major research challenges our world is facing.

Resumen
Blockchain and Tangle are data structures used to create an immutable public record of data insured by a network of peer-to-peer participants who maintain a set of constantly growing data records known as ledgers. Blockchain and Tangle technologies are a decentralized solution that guarantees the exchange of large amounts of trusted messages, among billions of connected IoT devices, which are very valuable as they are valid and complete. This highly encrypted and secure peer-to-peer messaging mechanism is adopted in this project to manage the processing of IoT transactions and the coordination between the devices that interact with the process. To maintain private transactions, secure and trustless, the distributed consensus algorithms are responsible for validating and choosing transactions and recording them in the global ledger. The results showed that the speed of the consensus algorithms can affect the creation in real time of reliable stories that track the events of the IoT networks. After incorporating Complex Event Processing that allows selecting only those high level events, it is possible to get an improvement in many situations. The result is a Middleware system that provides a framework for the construction of large-scale computer applications that use Complex Events Processing and different decentralized ledgers such as the blockchain of Ethereum or IOTA Tangle, for secure data storage.

Resumen
This paper presents a process that has been used to help nuclear power plant (NPP) clients resolve some of their more challenging waste water processing issues. These treatment issues may become even more evident during outage conditions, due (in part) to associated decontamination activities that may cause off-normal chemical conditions, which may subsequently change both the peak levels of activities for radionuclides introduced into the collected waste water and also the chemical forms in which they may exist (e.g., formation of colloids or soluble chelates). In one NPP waste processing example, a large proportion of soluble Co-58, which is normally present as a soluble cationic species or an uncharged colloidal solid, was found to behave like an anion; formation of an anionic chelation complex was implicated, possibly due to suspect EDTA, or similar additive, in a proprietary decontamination soap formulation. Antimony 125 (Sb-125), normally present as a weakly anionic (Sb(OH)6−) or even neutral (Sb(OH)30) species, was being displaced from previously-loaded media by other, more strongly bound species, causing an unacceptable peak activity in water intended for discharge. A quick resolution of the existing waste processing limitations was required, due to limited waste water holding capacity. Samples of the authentic NPP waste water containing the recalcitrant radionuclides were sent to our licensed off-site laboratory (MCLinc), where small-scale batch-equilibrium testing was used to down-select, from a large number (36) of candidate media (both commercially available and developed internally), those that were relatively effective and economical for use in achieving the required discharge criteria. Batch-equilibrium testing is very efficient for use in screening the relative effectiveness of contaminant removal by candidate media in a select waste water composition, and can also provide an estimate of the ultimate contaminant loading capacities on the candidate media; however, equilibrium testing does not provide information on the exchange kinetics and the shape of the packed column breakthrough isotherm. The performance of the most promising of the pre-screened media was then further tested and validated at the NPP site, using small packed bed columns containing the media to be evaluated, with use of actual NPP waste water under dynamic flow conditions. In the cited example, dynamic flow testing validated the performance characteristics for the most promising media, as previously-selected by the laboratory batch testing. In particular, it revealed that two novel media were particularly useful under process upset conditions, viz., AGC-5860 (a chemically modified activated carbon) for chelated transition metals (especially Co-58 & 60), and ASM-125 (a highly selective and tenacious resin product) especially for Sb-125. Subsequently, two of the most effective novel media identified in the screening effort have now been deployed at full-scale at an NPP site for the duration of approximately one year (to-date). The antimony-selective resin has performed especially well, greatly outperforming and outlasting previously utilized media, under many variations in the NPP influent waste water composition (including outage conditions and high boron concentrations, etc.). It was further found that the ASM 125 ISM had an excellent affinity for tellurium (Te 125m), a daughter of antimony (Sb). (See data from Exelon’s Byron Station. Also, on-going at Calvert Cliffs). At the request of two other NPPs (STP and Calvert Cliffs), the AGC ISM was found to solve their Fe 55 and Ni 63 problem, likely resulting from steam generator changeouts at the plants. Lastly, work is on-going remove radioactive iodine (I 129) with the granulated AGC.

Resumen
Information management for manufacturing resources such as cutting tools is an important research topic in the context of cloud manufacturing. Vendors and customers usually use catalogues to communicate information for such manufacturing resource. Incompatibilities of information in syntax, semantics, and structure among supply chains often result in inefficient manual sharing and management of the catalogue information. It is difficult for cloud based applications to pool information from various sources. This communication failure calls for a system neutral solution for data modeling and exchange to enhance interoperability of the cutting tool catalogue information. Previous studies has present solutions for representation of the cutting tool information with STEP AP242 (ISO/DIS 10303-242) with semantic classification referring to a PLib (ISO 13584, Part Library) based dictionary. This approach can be extended for the catalogue modeling, due to functionalities for specification and configuration control of general product variants in the same standard. With a modeling approach with standardized information schemas, system architecture to guide implementation is proposed to enhance the communication in practice. Relative elements to represent vendors’ catalogues and customers’ requirements are modeled. Associations to the PLib-based dictionary complete semantics and enable information mapping between vendors and customers. Principles of the mapping are identified to facilitate implementation of related software systems. Prototypes are developed to verify the proposed system architecture. The proposed solution is promising to migrate to other types of products than cutting tools, because the data models are based on the general product models defined in AP242.

En ASME 2012 Internal Combustion Engine Division Fall Technical Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icef2012-92194.

Resumen
Accurate combustion analysis at the test bed is an important tool for the development engineer. It can help engine design, efficiency improvements or emissions reduction by providing instantaneous feedback on the combustion process. It can also provide detailed combustion information to help speed-up the engine calibration process. By implementing shared memory communication, multiple core capability and streamlined calculation techniques, the calculation time of AVL gas exchange and combustion analysis software GCA (Gas Exchange and Combustion Analysis) has been dramatically reduced without significantly decreasing calculation results accuracy. This allows AVL IndiCOM (in combination with AVL GCA) to perform accurate gas exchange and combustion analysis calculations directly and promptly at the test bed. This opens the door to a number of promising new applications by erasing the bridge between measurement data acquisition and post-processing analysis. Increase of measurement data consistency and the reduction of development time are two of the most important benefits of being able to perform “on-line” plausibility checks of measurement data. The strong links connecting AVL GCA calculation results to the measurement data and the redundancy between calculation and measurement for the assessment of some highly relevant engine parameters (e.g. IMEP, air mass flow) can greatly extend the “on-line” plausibility checks functions already available in AVL IndiCom or AVL test bed automation software PUMA. Some passenger car application examples, where valve train flexibility is used to enhance fuel economy or reduce exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines, show that the immediate availability at the test bed of gas exchange related parameters (e.g. internal EGR rate, scavenged mass, mass flows through the valves) supports an intuitive optimization of the valve train parameters.

Resumen
Successful trading in financial markets is not possible without a support system that manages the preparation of the data, prediction system, and risk management and evaluates the trading efficien-cy. Selected orthogonal data was used to predict exchange rates by applying recurrent neural network (RNN) software based on the open source framework Keras and the graphical processing unit (GPU) NVIDIA GTX1070 to accelerate RNN learning. The newly developed software on the GPU predicted ten high-low distributions in approximately 90 minutes. This paper compares different daily algorith-mic trading strategies based on four methods of portfolio creation: split equally, optimisation, orthogonality, and maximal expectations. Each investigated portfolio has opportunities and limita-tions dependent on market state and behaviour of investors, and the efficiencies of the trading sup-port systems for investors in foreign exchange market were tested in a demo FOREX market in real time and compared with similar results obtained for risk-free rates.

Resumen
For several decades, we are witnessing the exchange of e-invoices. In Slovenia e-invoicing started in 2001 with the project “Electronic commerce of Slovenian enterprises”. The result of this project was standard named eSLOG. Furthermore, the advanced e-invoicing ecosystem was established which enabled enterprises to more easily exchange e-invoices. Moreover, since January 2015, all budget users can only receive e-invoices, which contributed to a larger share of e-invoicing. Despite all these incentives, data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia from 2019 show that only 58% of the observed companies have exchange e-invoices in a form suitable for automated processing and more than half of these companies have sent less than 10% of these type of e-invoices. In order to determine the current state of use of e-invoices, the advantages and obstacles as well as what incentives are needed to expand the use of e-invoices, a survey among Slovenian companies was conducted in autumn 2020.
