Resumen

Abstract. Base isolation of structures allows for large isolator displacements during strong ground motions, which reduces the seismic forces acting on a superstructure. However, recent large-scale earthquakes have triggered long-period ground motions, raising concerns regarding excessive isolator displacement beyond design limits. This study proposes a method to selectively increase damping around the isolation period using an inerter-based dynamic vibration absorber, thereby reducing excessive deformation in the isolation layer without compromising the isolation effect.

Pipeline isolation tools from three different manufacturers were evaluated using full-scale testing and numerical modeling to evaluate stresses generated in 24-inch diameter pipe material considering tool-induced loads and internal pressure. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted to calculate stresses and strains considering different pipe sizes, material grades, and internal pressures. The FEA results were used to generate a user-friendly parametric tool that was validated with measurements made using strain gauges installed on the test spools.
