Resumen
The well-knowm fragment from Jordanes Getica (116) containing the list of northern peoples allegedly conquered by the Gothic king Ermanarich is reconsidered taking into account the long history of studies, data of other late antique and early medieval sources and onomastics of Finno-Ugric, Iranian and North Caucasian languages. The list is considered to be originally a Gothic poetical memorandum similar to other Germanic thulas (as, e.g., in “Widsith”) introduced into Latin text and partly latinized. The beginning of the list is determined after the syntax of the sentence where it is included and later interpunction of manuscripts. Beginning with the Gothic word thiudos ‘peoples’ (Acc. pl.) the list is reconstructed as enumeration of ethnic groups and territories along the way from the Baltic over the Ladoga Lake to the upper Volga and down the Volga River up to its mouth and the North Caucasian steppe up to the Black Sea and, probably, Crimea. This must have been a way discovered by a Gothic expedition in the middle of the 4th c., when the Goths were very active in the Volga basin as it may be seen from the archaeological materials. All the names of the list are localized and interpreted with minimal emendations since they have either good parallels in historical sources or modern onomastics or may be understood as fragments of Gothic text. The results are shown on the map (Fig. 3).

Resumen
ABSTRACTThis article presents a new interpretation of the historiographical production of Jordanes by situating it in the political and social environment of Constantinople of the years 550–552. It argues that these years were a period of crisis in Justinian's reign and that this is reflected in the pessimistic view of Roman power and the critique of Justinian's military and religious policy we can see in Jordanes’ Romana. If this prevents us from understanding Jordanes as a mouthpiece of the court, he cannot be reduced to a mere reproducer of Cassiodorus either: while there is more evidence for a close interaction between Jordanes and Cassiodorus (in particular the use of the Historia Tripartita in the Romana) than usually adduced, this is balanced by Jordanes’ explicit attempts to keep his distance from the senator. If the latter can be explained by Jordanes’ much lower social and literary status and his Moesian rather than Italian origin, which made him only a marginal member of Cassiodorus’ circle in Constantinople, the agreement between both men is the result of a confluence of views caused by the turn of the Italian war in 540–550. Jordanes, then, appears as a unique voice in what must have been a polyphony of opinions in mid-sixth-century Constantinople.

No presente trabalho, traduzimos todos os excertos da Getica relativos a Átila e os analisamos a partir de alguns conceitos extraídos da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional.ABSTRACTThe Gothic history of Jordanes – or Getica – is the oldest extant history of a “barbaric” post-Roman people, but its author also alleges that it is an abridgement of the Gothic history written by Cassiodorus which didn't make it through the Middle Ages. The original work was supposedly written in Italy during the 520s, when Cassiodorus resided on the court of the Ostrogothic kings, but Jordanes' was written around 550 in Constantinople. About a sixth of Jordanes' work deals with events involving Attila, the king of the Huns. Jordanes' account of Attila's shenanigans reads almost like a single, stand-alone literary piece in which the protagonist is the Visigothic people as a whole, with the king of the Huns playing the part of the evil antagonist who steals the scene, while the Roman general Aetius serves as not much more than a silent sidekick to the Visigoths. In the present paper, I translate all the excerpts of the Getica related to Attila and analyse them with the help of some concepts extracted from Systemic Functional Linguistics. Keywords: Late Antiquity; historiography; barbarian invasions; visigoths; huns

Resumen
The aim of this study is to propose a new interpretation of Jordanes’ famous work, De Origine Actibusque Getarum, commonly known as Getica. The traditional view concerning the De Origine postulates that Jordanes was trying to devise a mythical, glorious history for the Goths, based on Greek and Latin texts, as well as what could have been ‘real elements of Gothic tradition.’ A number of scholars have also investigated the dependence of the De Origine on the lost Historia Gothorum, written by Cassiodorus – a high-ranking officer of the Ostrogothic court. Because Jordanes affirms, in the preface of the De Origine, that he was asked to abridge the Cassiodorian opus, many are led to believe that our author was able to transmit the Historia Gothorum to some extent. This thesis will counter those two views by proposing a narrative interpretation of the De Origine: my analysis is focused on the rhetorical strategies and textual choices of Jordanes. I argue that Jordanes’ usage of the ethnonym Geta, usually viewed as a classicising synonym of Goth, is, in fact, a way to link a number of different people that inhabited the Balkans throughout history: Dacians, Getae, Scythians, Goths, Gepids, and Huns. The reasoning behind this ethnogeographic constructions is, precisely, the goal of the De Origine: to devise a historical narrative of the vicissitudes of the Balkans. I chose to single out the narrative conceptualisation of this regions by calling it Magna Dacia – which is the Kulturraum that interests Jordanes and it is where most of the story takes place. My conclusions have incisive implications: we can see the De Origine as an independent text, one that does not owe its ideas to Cassiodorus; we can see a new Jordanes emerge, one with a high degree of agency in the composition of the work.

Mingarelli, Bernardo. "Collapse of the Hunnic Empire: Jordanes, Ardaric and the Battle of Nedao". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37121.

Resumen
This thesis examines the evidence surrounding the Battle of Nedao, an engagement between Ardaric, leader of the Gepids and other rebelling tribes, and Ellac, the eldest son of Attila. It argues against the claim that, after Attila’s death, it was the sons of Attila who ruined the Hunnic empire through civil war. Instead, the political crisis which inevitably led to the battle was brought about by Attila’s murdering of his brother and co-king, Bleda, in 445 and his intestate death in 453. If there was civil war between Attila’s sons, it did not occur until after Nedao. Furthermore, Ardaric was not of Royal Hunnic status fighting for succession at Nedao. He was, instead, one of the leaders of a rebellion that was not limited to Germanic tribes. The thesis focuses primarily on one source, Jordanes, since his Getica is the only known account of the battle which is not mentioned by any other contemporary source. The paper analyzes both Jordanes as an author and the language in his Getica, finding him not to be the semiliterate copyist of Cassiodorus, but instead underlines his own agency in the organizing of the work. From this broader understanding of Jordanes and Getica, it furthermore determines that he may, in fact, harbor an anti-Gepid sentiment towards the Gepid kingdom of his own day in the sixth century. Jordanes may, therefore, be anachronistically ascribing strength and importance to the Gepids’ role at Nedao, as Gepid-Constantinopolitan tension reached its zenith at the time he composed his work, thereby critically affecting our interpretation of the Battle of Nedao narrative.

Resumen
Apart from the Germania of Tacitus, Jordanes´s History of the Goths is the preeminent source for Germanic history. Many opinions of nowadays scholars are based on his accounts. Of the utmost significance are the effects in the field of onomastics. In the end the idea developed by R. Much that the names of various Germanic tribes are nicknames can be tracked down to Jordanes´s explanation of the name Gepids. In a similar way modern scholarship took his narrative of the migrations of the Goths as a veracious description of remote realities in the past, Christensen's book unsettles the prevailing opinion of early Gothic history. This essay deals with the consequences of these findings on onomastics.

In 551 AD, Jordanès, a christian author of gothic origin, wrote two books in latin : the De origine actibusque Getarum and the De summa temporum uel origine actibusque gentis Romanorum, which are also respectively called Getica and Romana. The first one of these texts drove attention because of the originality of its subject, the history of the gothic people, but the second one remained widely overlooked, if not despised. The Romana were only seen as a patchwork of already kown texts and Jordanes was supposed to have written it poorly, given that he’s presenting himself as an « agrammatus ».Therefore the goal of this thesis is to question these prejudices by proposing a new critical edition, a translation and a commentary of the Romana. The previous editors of Jordanes’ textes had biases, negatives (Mommsen 1882) or positives (Giunta & Grillone 1992 et Grillone 2017) about our author’s competences. And their editions were more a reflection of these biases that of Jordanes’original writting. We tried on the contrary to suspend our judgment as long as possible on the quality of the Romana et to let the manuscripts guide us so we can deliver a text which teaches us more about Jordanes.Furthermore, the Romana’s commentary reveals the interest of studying it. It is not caracterized by its literary qualities, but it is a good case study to see how history was made in the 6th century, which also gives a insight on of the lost Historia Romana of Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus. Lastly Jordanes shows us how Eastern Romans may have seen the empire and its history at their time. Indeed, besides the existent christian tone in the Romana, Jordanes leaves above all the impression of an helpless man facing his empire falling apart

The recent and widespread awareness on the challenges of teaching foreign language and culture has favoured the diffusion of intercultural finalities of those teachings. Such an observation is also applicable to the problem confronting the teaching of french language and culture in Jordan where the traditionnal civilisation perspective is still in force. Moreover, the important distance between french and jordanian cultural systems leads to the emergence and the consolidation of stereotyped cultural representations. The teaching of french culture in Jordan is therefore caracterised by the coming together of two conceptions of social behaviours corresponding to different readings of the world. The intercultural approach in the teaching of languages and cultures puts the teaching of the target culture within the context of the otherness and the linking of individuals with specific identities determined by their membership of a specific cultural community. Taking target and original cultures’ representations into consideration becomes a focal point of education on perception of otherness. The teacher is therefore saddled with the role of a mediator among the different actors during the didactic contract. Our research aims at bringing to the fore the content and the sources of jordanian students representations on the french culture as well as their own culture. Some of our findings could be used for the conception of french culture teaching programmes in an alloglotte environment

Resumen
The subcritical reactor is a kind of small nuclear facility, which may realize the chain reactor reaction through introducing an external neutron source to meet with the production, research, teaching, testing and training purposes. Meanwhile, the subcritical reactor will not reach the critical status, which has advantages of simple structure, safety, reliability. Jordan subcritical reactor is a light water moderated reactor, it employs the Pu-Be as external neutron source, and the neutron multiplication factor in the range of 0.94~0.95. Jordan subcritical reactor mainly consists of fuel elements, reactor core and reactor core vessel assembly, operation platform, water loop system, neutron source driving system, which can be used for the purposes of teaching, training, testing and research. This paper reviews the international application history of subcritical reactor and its status of research and development, describes the design purpose and requirement of Jordan subcritical reactor. The detailed structure design of Jordan subcritical reactor is illustrated. Furthermore, the structure design characteristics and some difficulties of Jordan subcritical reactor are mentioned in detail, such as the choose of structure materials, lay out of Jordan subcritical reactor, control of machining precision and sealing of pipes. Resumen
Resilience has become a priority for the EU in its 2015 European Neighborhood Policy review (ENP), It refers to building state and societal resilience of the Union as a whole, its members and the EU׳s neighbors including Jordan, a strategic southern partner of the EU. In this regard, the EU Building resilience in Jordan in response for crises as the Syrian refugee crisis seems workable but the EU needs to foster it. Thus, this paper’s question is How can the EU foster resilience after it has become a priority in its 2015 (ENP) review in case of Jordan? While many scholars like David Chandler argues that the EU could foster resilience in its neighboring countries by making it a local self-governing project and not an external imposed project where the EU has the mission of monitoring and assessment, in this paper, based on document analysis from official websites for the EU and Jordan including their official bilateral and multilateral agreements and textual analysis of the current literature on building resilience I argue that fostering resilience requires both presenting resilience as a self-governing project with a greater engagement of the Jordanian government, local community and its civil society, at the same time , it needs a better mechanism for the EU in monitoring and assessment, and more importantly helping Jordan to establish the best institutional design that could foster state and societal resilience in Jordan.

Resumen
This paper presents some aspects of the need for training and EU best practices and success stories replication to target countries (Morocco and Jordan) in order to establish or upgrade the advanced textile centers. Overall, the proposed teaching and e-learning methods and the aspects of the need for training and EU best practices implementation and success stories replication to target countries (Morocco and Jordan) in order to establish or upgrade the advanced textile centers are essential for higher education organizations involved. In the framework of the FOSTEX Erasmus+ project were identified the best practices across Europe with high potential for being transferrable to the partner countries (Morocco and Jordan) including aspects concerning learning, teaching (courses), dissemination, quality testing, international standardization, equipment, and research projects. We can conclude that the interest of the partners is focused on polymers, protective clothing tests, colour management, product certification, international accreditation, environmental impact (Reach Legislation), colour fastness, washing fastness, and physico-mechanical investigation.

Perrin, Jean-Patrick. Why We Care: An overview of the distribution of unpaid care work in Ma’an, southern Jordan. Oxfam, junio de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2021.7741.

Texto completo
Resumen
The concept of unpaid care work is not widely known in Ma’an or other parts of Jordan. As a result, the benefits of unpaid care to individuals’ lives, as well as its negative impact on women who bear a disproportionate share of it at the household level, are overlooked by both local communities and policy makers. As such, women remain largely excluded from playing an active role in the economy, and receive limited or no recognition for the significant role that they play within the household. In 2020, Oxfam commissioned a study on unpaid care work in Jordan’s southern region of Ma’an. The purpose of the study was to better understand what care work women and men do, how it is distributed, and how people think about it. The study found that women perform the vast majority of care work activities, and that gender norms compound an unequal redistribution of unpaid care. This paper presents the study results and makes recommendations on how the Government of Jordan, donors and NGOs can encourage the redistribution of unpaid care work and improve women’s access to livelihood opportunities.

Resumen
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, states agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some states refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bolton, Laura. Attitudes to Water Usage in Jordan. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), julio de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.105.

Texto completo
Resumen
The author undertakes a literature review of attitudes to water usage in Jordan. One survey was identified which assessed attitudes towards water conservation, sampling 2000 residents in three regions in Jordan (Irbid, Amman, and Zarqa) in 2017. According to the survey, only 61% of respondents believed there was a water shortage in Jordan. 23% believed the water shortage was due to population pressures. The survey focussed more on water conservation than water use. Most of the respondents felt the government were not doing enough on water shortage issues. They were not asked how they feel about the role of the government versus their individual responsibility. Older respondents perceived the shortages to be more critical. A lack of interest in participating in water saving activities was identified among the youth. Water quality was perceived as poor in the USAID survey and noted in other sources. The survey found that most residents had management strategies in place for the day that the water was delivered. Views about politics of regional cooperation and refugee pressure on water use potentially affect attitudes to water but this was not identified specifically within the scope of this report.

Resumen
EdTech Hub country scans explore factors that enable and hinder the use of technology in education. This includes policies, government leadership, private-sector partnerships, and digital infrastructure for education. The scans are intended to be comprehensive but are by no means exhaustive; nonetheless, we hope they will serve as a useful starting point for more in-depth discussions about opportunities and barriers in EdTech in specific countries, in this case, in Jordan. This report was originally written in June 2020. It is based primarily on desk research, with quality assurance provided by a country expert.
