Resumen
The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) is the only medicolegal death investigation system of the US federal government. Its origins can be traced to three dried tissue specimens placed on a shelf by a Civil War Surgeon General in 1862. The collections and the library of the Army Surgeon General spawned the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), the National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and the National Library of Medicine. Pathologists of the Army Medical Museum performed the autopsies of assassinated Presidents Lincoln and Garfield and assisted with that of Kennedy. The now defunct AFIP created the first forensic pathology training program approved by the American Board of Pathology and then the AFMES. Col Ed Johnston, CAPT Charlie Stahl, and Col Dick Froede were the original pioneers of the AFMES.

I arrived in Washington, D.C. in June 1983 to begin a two-year appointment as Director of Programs for the American Anthropological Association. Neither my wife nor I had lived before in an inner city of our own country. We chose an apartment a block from the AAA office, within a mile or two of the Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, the National Zoo, and many of the galleries, museums, and monuments that define the city—places that had influenced our decision to temporarily leave our home in southern California.

Resumen
The species Filaroides (Parafilaroides) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978 is redescribed, based on examination of mature fifth-stage specimens from wild infected ringed seals (Phoca hispida), harp seals (Phoca groenlandica), harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) collected in eastern and arctic Canadian waters. Mature specimens of Filaroides (Parafilaroides) hispidus Kennedy, 1986 from ringed seals and grey seals were also examined. Comparison of these worms with museum specimens and the literature led to a review of species in the subgenus Parafilaroides (Dougherty, 1946) Anderson, 1978. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978, F. (P.) decorus (Dougherty and Herman, 1947) Anderson, 1978, F. (P.) hydrurgae (Mawson, 1953) Kennedy, 1986, and F. (P.) hispidus Kennedy, 1986 are recognized as valid species. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) arcticus (Delyamure and Alekseev, 1966) Kennedy, 1986 and F. (P.) krascheninnikovi (Yurakhno and Skrjabin, 1971) Kennedy, 1986 are synonymized with F. (P.) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) caspicus (Kurochkin and Zablotsky, 1958) Kennedy, 1986 is considered a species inquirenda.

Resumen
The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library and Archives project is an on-site repository created in order to provide access to information regarding tribal culture and heritage to local tribal members and researchers. The project filled the need for a space dedicated to material related to the history of local Southern California Native American tribes and information regarding the topics of Archaeology, Anthropology and History. The collection includes: books, manuscripts, documents, audio/visual media, and photographs. Bringing together multimedia sources, the Special Tribal Library allows for the preservation and accessibility of these items through cataloging and digitizing the collection. This method allows for the collection to be available to the public while being able to preserve its integrity through limited handling. In order to facilitate the establishment of the Special Library and Archive, the Malki Museum Special Tribal Library and Archives project teamed up with the Malki Museum’s Director, as well as the Malki Museum’s Tribal Board of Directors. Several weeks of organization, assessment, and collaboration helped prepare the Special Library first for user-friendliness. The final product is the Malki Museum Tribal Special Library which provides tribal members and scholars alike a locality where research can be undertaken and acquired. The Malki Museum Tribal Special Library project helps bring important data within reach to its local community.

A museum on a historical site that follows the history and evolution of the city of Athens by exploring the underground levels while creating cultural and leisure spaces for the community on its ground floor. Several pavilions on the ground floor with references on classical architecture act as connectors between past and present; Some of those pavilions house activities for the community and some act as vertical circulation and light shafts between today (park level) and history (underground). Both past and present are incorporated into a both vertical and horizontal journey from light-towards darkness-towards light.

Resumen
The aim of this thesis is to describe the subject indexing of images performed at the provincial museum of Jämtland and to evaluate the inter-indexer consistency at the museum. The main questions are: How are photographs indexed in the database SOFIE foto regarding Outline-codes, subject headings and natural language keywords? How does these procedures compare to research and indexing projects? How consistent are the indexers at the museum when choosing Outline-codes, subject headings and natural language keywords? Answers are sought by reading articles about classification, image indexing, indexing language, indexing consistency and by looking at a number of projects attempting to standardise image indexing practice in Sweden. The indexing practice at the museum is also described. In addition a minor inter-indexing consistency study, based on the subject indexing of ten photographs made by five indexers at the museum, is performed. The results are calculated conceptually and terminologically using Rollings measure. The main results are that the indexers are quite consistent with one another and that the subject indexing when using a controlled vocabulary is more consistent than the natural language keyword indexing. The results, as expected, are improved when calculated conceptually rather than terminologically. The information obtained in the articles is discussed and compared to the indexing practice at the museum and to the results of the consistency study. A certain agreement is found, which might imply that the indexing practice at the museum is functional, although further research is suggested.

Borda, Ann Elizabeth. "The museum library : a survey of libraries in the museums and related institutions of the Greater London area, together with a study on the evolution of the museum library in England". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1996. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317513/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The central focus of the present research is a survey of libraries located in, and associated with, the museums and related institutions of the Greater London area. This investigation arises from an awareness of a general absence in the literatures of both the library and museum professions concerning the role and function of these special libraries. A first means of analysis involved an historical survey illustrating the evolution of museums and libraries in England, with particular reference to the South East. This preliminary stage in the research confirmed the historical significance of London in terms of the development of the two communities, locally and nationally, as well as providing a contextual basis from which to approach the present state and status of the museum library. A statistical survey of eighty-four museum institutions and their libraries in the Greater London area comprised the second stage of analysis. The survey population was grouped by sectors as defined, with some modification, by the official advisory body, the Museums and Galleries Commission. Five categories represented the survey sectors under examination: National, Central Government, Local Authority, University and Independent. During the 1993-94 period, data were gathered on individual institutions in each sector through the use of a designed questionnaire and in-person interviews concerning various aspects of library operation and function, namely; Administration and Staff; Finance; Collections; Catalogues; Services; and Networks. Findings suggested that broad parameters existed in what constituted a museum library, i.e., ranging from a service facility to an informal curatorial collection. Consequently, organisation of the library and its role in relation to the parent body varied accordingly. More defined roles generally corresponded to those institutions supporting libraries which were formally organised and professionally staffed. The levels of public access, collections management and services were also significantly related to the sector under which an institution was grouped. These designations indicated, for instance, that the Nationals had the most comprehensive library facilities and services, whereas smaller institutions across the remaining sectors showed considerable variation in library provision. By default, the funding arrangements specific to certain groups and/or maintaining bodies had a documented effect on the state of the museum libraries surveyed. In general, a greater number of libraries are housed in or associated with museums than described in available sources. However, their role as information partner to the museum organisation is not significant on all levels of provision, particularly as an internally networked resource for the study of respective collections and as an accessible facility for the research public. This limitation in potential may be due to its perception within both the organisation and the wider community, although insufficient allocations to the parent body and the library itself are additional factors.

The Library of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is rich in rare and unique publications, and those of memorial value. The collection checking envisages visual revision and analysis of every book, and during this process the specialists revealed a number of valuable publications for further research. Also all registered publication went through the stage of initial collection specification (e.g., Rumyantsev museum collection, collection of the New Western Arts Museum, memorial libraries, etc). Currently, this information has been being entered into the e-catalog. This will enable to verify special arrays within the Research Library’s collection and simplify investigations into historical and memorial book collections and individual valuable publications.

Resumen
The article is devoted to the history of M. Gorky's last library. The volumes of the book collection are located in the memorial museum-apartment of the writer on Malaya Nikitskaya street in Moscow. Gorky collected books all his life, the multi-volume collection that has come down to our days is the final one. The library, which has been formed for more than forty years, has a complex history. The last volumes were added to the library in 1936. The main part of the stored items is located in the memorial exposition. Bookcases with books are located not only in the library, but also in the main hallway, in the hall and along the marble staircase - this was the case under Gorky. The composition of the library, the principle of book arrangement, systematization and subject matter have also been preserved. Of great interest are the inscriptions and Gorky's marks on the books. Gorky's personal library is an integral part of the museum interiors, emphasizing the specifics of the lifetime setting of the memorial exposition. This is notonly an invaluable exhibit of the museum, but also a significant source of studying the personality of the writer and the socio-cultural processes of his era.

Resumen
<p>Over the last decades seismic isolation technology has got a foothold in the structural protection increasing both the damping and the natural period of the superstructure. The curved surface sliding isolator is one of the most common devices used to aim at this goal. It features a special friction material (HIM) able to dissipate a very large amount of energy while, the recentring capacity is given by the pendulum effect. This kind of isolator has been used in the Green Museum Palace (Taiwan). The constancy of its behaviour has been investigated in ShakeLab (Italy), testing 100% of the Friction Pendulum devices in factory production control. In this paper, response data from FPC tests on seven types of Friction Pendulum devices are illustrated. These data show the constancy of the performance of the isolators subjected to design conditions. Furthermore, scale effect in dynamic properties has been studied because of different size isolators have been taken into account.</p>

Their value and importance is derived from the part they play within the city (for instance that of a church, a museum, an opera, a train station, etc.), and which finds its confirmation in their distinct architectural form and deliberate placement in areas that are vital to the perception of the form of a city. The compatibility of these three components – those of status, distinct architectural form and deliberate placement – makes them important structures. Regardless of historical, political or economic circumstances, the form of important structures has always been an expression of the aspirations and capabilities of a given period. Over the centuries, libraries have been a part of this group of structures. Currently, due to the civilisational transformation tied to the advancement of information technologies, the status of libraries within cities is undergoing substantial changes. Their modern architectural form is changing as well. In many cases it no longer expresses such values as durability, stability and solemnity, which had defined library buildings over the centuries, providing them with a particular distinctness. Is the deliberate placement of libraries in areas that are important to the perception of the form of a city still important in the face of the changes that are affecting the other two components that have been previously mentioned? The paper includes one of the possible answers to the question: where is the library?

Resumen
In 2018, Fort Hays State University began building a prototype for a low-cost, portable smart classroom. This project was a collaboration between the library and the Institute for New Media Studies and was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This manual assumes that you are working with a smart classroom kit with components that have already been collected and set up, either by you or by an organization or consortium. If you are trying to create a smart classroom kit or set up the smart classroom screens, please consult the Smart Classroom Designs document. If you are trying to display content, create an exhibit, or teach a class in the smart classroom, this user manual is for you.

Rieger, Oya Y., Roger Schonfeld y Liam Sweeney. The Effectiveness and Durability of Digital Preservation and Curation Systems. Ithaka S+R, julio de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18665/sr.316990.

Resumen
In August 2020, with funding from the Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS), Ithaka S+R launched an 18-month research project to examine and assess the sustainability of these third-party digital preservation systems. In addition to a broad examination of the landscape, we more closely studied eight systems: APTrust, Archivematica, Arkivum, Islandora, LIBNOVA, MetaArchive, Samvera and Preservica. Specifically, we assessed what works well and the challenges and risk factors these systems face in their ability to continue to successfully serve their mission and the needs of the market. In scoping this project and selecting these organizations, we intentionally included a combination of profit-seeking and not-for-profit initiatives, focusing on third-party preservation platforms rather than programmatic preservation. Because so many heritage organizations pursue the preservation imperative for their collections with increasingly limited resources, we examine not only the sustainability of the providers but also the decision-making processes of heritage organizations and the challenges they face in working with the providers.

Resumen
The authors explored the activity of mass media and cultural organizations aimed at clarification of the current problematic issue – preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage under the conditions of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The authors emphasize that occupants not only destroy historic buildings, i.e. material objects, but also steal art values, destroy library and archive funds; their actions are aimed at destruction of our spirituality, identity and history. It is pointed out that there are the main streams in the work of journalists, experts, and culture figures, namely: fixation of losses, propaganda of the Ukrainian culture in the world, expert evaluation of the restitution possibilities, and filling of the culture material with patriotic sense. The full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022 led to the numerous loss of life, ruination of the military, civil and infrastructure objects. But the state-aggressor destroys and robs our culture in this war. Since the beginning of the war mass media have been actively informing about the situation in the regions, which happened to be at the line of the Russian troops attack. The information was in particular about the fact that different educational establishments, libraries and their funds, museums with valuable collections, theatres, religious buildings and historic buildings had been ruined. To tell the truth the information was incomplete due to the limited opportunities to monitor the situation. However, later it has been systematized. The work of journalists and experts contributed to this since they stated the criminal acts of Russia, informing about the ruination facts of historic, sacral, cultural monuments, devastation of many museum collections, destruction of library and archive funds. Digitalization of the Russian war crimes against Ukrainian culture became one more important work aimed at preservation of the Ukrainian cultural heritage. It was done by means of interactive maps of the Ukrainian cultural losses and it enables documenting crimes of the occupant army and spreading this information at the international level. Key words: culture, cultural front, cultural losses, cultural values, cultural heritage, war, media.
