Abstract Current interest in physiological and nutritional activities of the sterol, polyunsaturated fatty acid, and polar lipid fractions of meats and other foods indicates that analytical methods for lipids should be evaluated on their ability to recover and quantitate these classes. Current methods of lipid isolation furnish an extract that is dependent on the solvent(s) used, the type of food material, the temperature of extraction, and the relative proportions of the lipid classes present. Extraction with ethers or other relatively nonpolar solvents removes principally the neutral fats an

Lipids in wastewaters are potential raw material for renewable diesel, but may complicate biological treatment of wastewaters. The lipid composition of palm oil mill effluent (POME), chemithermomechanical pulp mill (CTMP) wastewater and municipal wastewater (MWW) was studied with a combination of thin-layer chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance. Gravimetrically determined content of extracted lipids from the solids of POME and CTMP wastewater were 8.4 ± 1.2 g/L (19.6 ± 0.8% of dry weight) and 0.17–0.23 g/L (12.4–18.5%), respectively, while MWW contained 0.021 ± 0.002 g/L (9.3 ± 1.4%) o

Passive permeation through biological membranes is an important mechanism for transporting molecules and regulating the cellular content. Studying and understanding passive permeation is also extremely relevant to many industrial applications, including drug design and nanotechnology. In vivo membranes typically consist of mixtures of lamellar and nonlamellar lipids. Lamellar lipids are characterised by their tendency to form lamellar bilayer phases, which are predominant in biology. Nonlamellar lipids, when isolated, instead form non-bilayer structures such as inverse hexagonal phases. While

Fibre is also an important food component that needs to be considered. The maternal macronutrient profile can influence embryonic and fetal development. For instance, both low and excessively high protein intakes during pregnancy are associated with restricted growth, increased adiposity, and impaired glucose tolerance. High-fat maternal diets can significantly increase the susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and percentage total bod

In recent studies, lipid bilayers attract a great deal of interest as a material for nanoscale structure. Some devices utilizing lipid bilayers, which include various kinds of sensors and molecular sorting devices, have been proposed. Understanding of thermal energy transfer in the lipid bilayers plays an important role in developing such devices with nano structures. In this study, we have investigated the energy transfer along and across the bilayer membrane by molecular dynamics simulations of the lipid bilayer in liquid water. Conducting polymer actuators and sensors utilize electrochemical reactions and associated ion transport at the polymer-electrolyte interface for their engineering function. Similarly, a bioderived active material utilizes ion transport through a protein and across a bilayer lipid membrane for sensing and actuation functions. Inspired by the similarity in ion transport process in a bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) and conducting polymers, we propose to build an integrated ionic device in which the ion transport through the protein in the bilayer lipid membrane regulates the electrolytic and mechani
