Resumen
Literature circles create an opportunity for students to make reading a fun-filled activity and at the same time develop their fluency skills. This action research examined the efficacy of creating literature circles in the classroom as an intervention program to address students’ problems in reading fluency specifically in terms of phrasing and accuracy. Furthermore, it also investigated the attitudes of students’ toward reading before and after they became members of a literature circle. The study was conducted among 30 grade 7 students from the same section who belong to the frustration level during the oral reading assessment done at the beginning of the school year. Results of the study revealed that there was an improvement in the students phrasing in reading after the 10-week intervention period but not significantly enough to improve their fluency. On the other hand, a significant difference was observed on the students’ reading rate after the intervention period. Furthermore, the students’ attitudes toward reading have also positively changed after they became members of the literature circles. The study concluded that the creation of literature circles in the classroom could improve students’ reading fluency.

Resumen
Abstract How can student-teachers learn efficient ways to encourage sustainability thinking in their pupils and fulfil the competence aims on sustainability outlined in national subject curriculums as a response to UNESCO’s programme on Education for Sustainable Development, ESD? The core hypothesis of this project was that tailored literature circles, focused on the ecocritical aspects of literary texts, would make student-teachers aware of how they can use literature as a process to reflect on sustainability. This would enable them to incorporate sustainability thinking into their own teaching practices. The project’s tailoring of the standard literature circle roles (Daniels 1994, 2002, 2006) involved the design of reading roles that highlighted ecocritical and generic aspects of the studied texts and the application of an analytical matrix developed by literary scholars researching the representation of nature in children’s and young adult literature. This article presents the results of a small-scale study testing the ecocritical literature circles approach and its impact on student-teachers’ conception of their own ability to meet the competence aims on sustainability in their teaching. The intervention included lectures on ecocriticism and on the posthuman debate prior to the literature circles and student feedback through pre- and post-circle questionnaires. It was implemented in the teacher-training classroom, working with dystopian science fiction texts for young adults. These texts present the reader with visions of the future. The study showed that the ecocritical literature circles, and in particular the ecocritical reading roles, were considered useful by the participating student-teachers. The participants also reported a significant increase in confidence relative to their own ability to discuss sustainability issues with their pupils.

Resumen
Research supports that comprehension is a vital component of reading and life-long literacy, and there are many instructional approaches for teaching reading comprehension. Literature circles are a popular approach which are widely used but have not yet been studied empirically. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of participation in literature circles on the reading comprehension of middle school students. More specifically, the study examined whether there was a difference in the reading comprehension scores of students after participating in literature circles versus after participating in directed reading activity, and whether there were interactions of type of instruction and students' overall reading achievement levels. A mixed design using split-plot ANOVA was used to examine the within-subject variable of treatment, and the between-subject variables of class period, assessments (or passages used), and overall reading achievement levels, as well as determine interactions among the variables. Eighty six eighth-grade students (65% male, 35%female) in a suburban public middle school in the southeastern United States participated in the eight-week study. By class period, students were randomly placed in literature circle groups for four weeks and also participated in whole-class directed reading activity for four weeks. Students read one short story each week and comprehension was assessed with corresponding cloze passages. The reading scores indicated there were no significant differences between the two types of instruction. However, results were statistically significant for all interactions (treatment and passages, treatment and class period, and treatment and overall reading achievement). In addition, when the data were analyzed by overall reading ability it can be argued that the findings have practical significance. Evidence suggests that students with low overall reading achievement levels may not respond to literature circles as positively as other students, and that students with high overall reading achievement may respond more favorably. Overall, literature circles appear to have promise as an instructional approach to reading, especially for non-struggling readers. The discussion expands on the limitations of this study as well as focuses on the need for further scientifically-based research on this popular reading approach.

Bridges, Melissa J. "Virtual Literature Circles| An Exploration of Teacher Strategies for Implementation". Thesis, Piedmont College, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3722949.

Resumen

This qualitative study explored the strategies that teachers use to implement virtual literature circles in middle and high school classes and university Reading programs. Through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis, several strategies that support student learning were identified, including guided questions, rubrics with clear expectations, and targeted feedback. Making the process student-centered rather than teacher-centered, using appropriate platforms with small groups, and including a face-to-face component also supported student learning.

Additionally, an examination of teacher perceptions of benefits and challenges of virtual literature circles revealed more advantages than disadvantages. Benefits included improved writing, specificity, and critical thinking; connections to other subject matter; peer interactions; ease of differentiation; technology integration; flexibility; teacher collaboration; engagement; and student-centered practice. Challenges included technology access issues and glitches, student apathy, superficial student responses, and time issues.

Resumen
Quality circles occurred in Japan after the Second World War, and the forefront of the competition today, has an important role in improving the quality and efficiency. The main philosophy of the quality circle is to achieve quality with a participative management approach. Quality circles, only to find not only identify problems also suggests a variety of solutions. It is settled principle that the employees can do the best work by themselves and, according to this it is tried to provide more opportunities for employees. This situation motivates the staff, and thus prepares the ground to increase the quality of goods or services. Customer satisfaction and management objectives are carried out. Considering all these factors, quality circles has emerged as a concept that should be investigated. In this study, it was examined quality circles that considered as a factor of enhancing success in the operations and having an important role inquality management. The study carries a descriptive qualification that is prepared literature review. In the first section of the study was investigated the purpose of the quality control that the steps followed and the methods used in this process. The second section was focused on quality circles. In this section, it has tried to explain shortly the definition of quality circles, history, characteristics, comparison with other groups and objectives. Benefits of quality circles were examined separately for businesses and employees, and determined the business sectors. The organizational structure of quality circles and organization members’ tasks was explained.

Resumen
Digital transformation refers to the process of redefining the way enterprises do business using digital technology. It changes existing organizational processes within and between organizations. The transformation affects all organizations, but poses a particular challenge for small and medium-sized enterprises. To begin a digital transformation process, enterprises must first be aware of the factors influencing the transformation, so they can further develop their digital maturity roadmap and continue the digital transformation process. In this paper, we aim to identify the most important internal and external factors that guide the digital transformation process and the dominant theories behind them. The findings suggest that organizational factors, together with technology and environment, may provide a comprehensive view of digital transformation. The results also showed that data and its quality are increasingly attracting attention in professional circles and data science communities, but are not yet sufficiently considered in the context of digital transformation.

En ASME 2020 15th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2020-8254.

Resumen
Abstract Cylindrical surface and its tolerance verification play important role in machining process. Although there exists many approaches that can fit the maximum, minimum and minimum zone cylinders, the cylinder fitting problems can even be further simplified. The methodology developed in this paper seeks to reduce the number of parameters used in cylinder fitting model using the projection model. The model evaluates 3-D tolerance specifications by introducing the optimal direction of projection such that the 2-D point projected onto this direction has optimal tolerance specifications (maximum, minimum and minimum zone circles). Besides, a global optimum solver, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is applied to avoid the problem of finding local optimum. The proposed simplified method shows consistent results when compared with the results from literature.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract Cycloidal-toothed gerotors are formed by the combination of epicycloid and a hypocyloid arcs that use the pitch circles as their base circles. They are a common profile type used in industry likely because they can be generated by simple parametric equations. One of the problems with the cycloidal-toothed profile type is that the radius of curvature of both the inner and outer gear are zero when the gears contact at the pitch point which can lead to high contact stress. A gear generation algorithm has been developed that modifies the hypocycloid tooth form to eliminate contact in regions with very low radii of curvature that is yet to be described in scientific literature. Seven performance metrics are developed to evaluate size, flow ripple, adhesive wear, contact stress, radial gap leakage, lateral gap leakage, and inlet throttling that are used as objective functions in a multi-objective optimization. The pump geometry is optimized by applying the NSGA-II algorithm with a population size of 1000 for 500 generations to produce a pareto front, and the results are compared to two cycloidal-toothed gerotors used in the automotive industry. Two designs were found that significantly reduce the contact stress in the profiles while giving the same performance in the other six objective functions in comparison to the profiles used in industry. Another two designs are found that can significantly reduce several objective functions if the size of the pump can be increased slightly.

Resumen
The human being in the environments of modern technology has to endure stresses of many and varied kinds of vibrations [1]. Measuring vibration is an important tool in rehabilitation and biomechanical fields of research. We have proposed image processing as a new method to record and determine the frequency response of human body. The subjects were exposed to whole body periodical vibration while standing on a shaking table. Two digital camcorders were used to capture the motion of colored pencil-dot markers on the skin of human body (forehead) and on the edge of the shaking table. After color spotting each frame, the binary image results were processed using new circle factor criteria proposed in this work, for fast finding circles based on second order statistics. The extracted points were calibrated using our own extended version of the direct linear transformation (DLT) method. We subsequently used Borland Delphi 5.0 language to develop useful software for measuring and analyzing human body vibration. As a result, it was clear that the proposed method was lower noise-sensitive in comparison to accelerometer. In order to investigate the validity of the software, the obtained mechanical impedance of the body were compared with other investigations in literature and showed to be compatible. The main advantage of this method is working with a simple user-familiar hardware with no external device attached to the subject and also a user-friendly-software.

Texto completo
Resumen
A novel design approach for optimizing the shape of the microfabricated pillar columns [1] for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is presented. Applying this optimization approach, a new foil shape definition was introduced. Several design alternatives were evaluated starting from typical NACA 4-digit series symmetric airfoil definition. In order to avoid stagnant regions over the leading edge for NACA airfoil, the maximum thickness point was defined at the center of the chord. Then this shape was defined as the intersection of two parent circles to create the same geometry with simpler definition. As a final step of the optimization, a custom foil shape was obtained by fitting the 4th order polynomial, which was obtained from typical NACA 4-digit series, according to the defined boundary conditions. Microfluidic flow simulations were performed for electroosmotic flow (EOF) case for evaluating the performance of the foil definitions over other popular geometries (diamond and hexagon) from literature [2]. For electric field of 100 V/cm and same length and width, the custom foil shape yielded a plate height value of 2.76 μm, while 2.85 μm was obtained with hexagon as being the lowest value among other alternatives from the literature.

Resumen
Abstract The transverse vibrations of a circular disk of uniform thickness rotating about its axis with constant angular velocity are analyzed. The results specialized to the linear case of disks clamped at the center and free at the periphery are in good agreement with those reported in the literature. The natural frequencies of spinning hard and floppy disks are obtained for various nodal diameters and nodal circles. Primary resonance is shown to occur at the critical rotational speed at which, in the linear analysis, the spinning disk is unable to support arbitrary spatially fixed transverse loads. Using the method of multiple scales, we determine a set of four nonlinear ordinary-differential equations governing the modulation of the amplitudes and phases of two interacting modes. The symmetry of the system and the loading conditions are reflected in the symmetry of the modulation equations. They are reduced to an equivalent set of two first-order equations whose equilibrium solutions are determined analytically. The stability characteristics of these solutions is studied; the qualitative behavior of the response is independent of the mode being considered.
