Resumen
Abstract The strategy of personnel policy should be subordinated to the general strategy of the organization, its strategic planning. Human resources management is determined by the goals and objectives of the organization. Its functions are associated with ensuring and maintaining the performance of staff. Investments in the personnel potential of the company became an indispensable condition for gaining and maintaining a stable position in the market and began to be taken into account in the personnel policy of the leading companies in the world. Today, the role of effective strategic management and, above all, personnel management, especially the process of planning of the development of human potential, its capabilities and perspectives. Enterprises that do not pay due attention to working with staff and do not direct personnel management towards business success are at risk of aggravation of survival problems.

Resumen
Food and nutrition are fundamental to military capability. Historical examples demonstrate that a failure to supply adequate nutrition to armies inevitably leads to disaster; however, innovative measures to overcome difficulties in feeding reap benefits, and save lives. In barracks, UK Armed Forces are currently fed according to the relatively new Pay As You Dine policy, which has attracted criticism from some quarters. The recently introduced Multi-Climate Ration has been developed specifically to deal with issues arising from Iraq and the current conflict in Afghanistan. Severely wounded military personnel are likely to lose a significant amount of their muscle mass, in spite of the best medical care. Nutritional support is unable to prevent this, but can ameliorate the effects of the catabolic process. Measuring and quantifying nutritional status during critical illness is difficult. A consensus is beginning to emerge from studies investigating the effects of nutritional interventions on how, what and when to feed patients with critical illness. The Ministry of Defence is currently undertaking research to address specific concerns related to nutrition as well as seeking to promote healthy eating in military personnel.

Resumen
ABSTRACT In formulating an effective wildlife response plan there are four basic building blocks. A facility or place to do the work, proper equipment to do the work with, a structure to organize the work in a safe effective and efficient manner and personnel- the people to perform all of the varied tasks required to successfully respond to each unique incident. While each of these blocks are important and a case could be made for any as the single “most” important, in reality, the foundation on which an oiled wildlife response is built is personnel, just as in every other emergency response. Without adequately trained personnel, the best equipment, the finest facility and an effective organizational structure will all be wasted and the failure of the wildlife response is pre-ordained. Unfortunately, not only is identifying, training and keeping personnel at ready the most important factor in maximizing the success of a wildlife response, it is the most challenging. Many of the people introduced to oiled wildlife response during an oil spill are at least initially keen to the possibility of pursuing it as a career. While the enthusiasm of many wanes when they learn the harsh realities and unpredictability of the work, in many cases the biggest obstacle is that there is not a clear path to follow to receive the training and experience necessary. If by good fortune they are able to gain that training and experience there is little hope of being able to support themselves or perhaps even a family once they have achieved the required skill level. While industry, governmental agencies and non-govemmental or non profit organizations have all attempted to solve this problem in a variety of ways, there is still no model that provides a real answer to this challenge. This paper will discuss the challenges involved in identifying potential personnel, training and maintenance of skills, and providing the support required to keep them available and ready to provide the skills necessary to assure each oiled wildlife response the best chance of success in documenting and mitigating the impacts of an oil spill on wildlife.

Resumen
This article explores how parents and school personnel perceived and experienced parental involvement at a school serving a low-income mainly black population. The first author recorded detailed field notes (n=70) and conducted in-depth interviews with parents (n=20) and school personnel (n=20) over a three-year period. Despite rhetoric of inclusion, the school’s policies and practices restricted parents to predetermined and acceptable roles of parental involvement. Ideologies of colorblind racism undergirded school policies and practices, thereby maintaining current social hierarchies of white privilege and racial minority disadvantage. This colorblind approach to parental involvement created barriers to the development of authentic relationships and, therefore, the development of a positive, mutual, and respectful relationship between student families and school personnel. Naming racism and recognizing its impact on the school environment are important first steps towards change. School staff and teachers must be willing to interrogate their participation in maintaining social hierarchies.

Bachelor Thesis in Business Administration III, Organization 15 hp, 2FE78E, School of economics at Linnaeus University Kalmar, Spring 2021. Title: Competency that remains – in time and space  Authors: Adam Mårtensson and Karl Westdahl Supervisor: Jasmina Beharic Examiner: Mikael Lundgren Purpose: The aim of this study is to distinguish and identify factors within internal employer branding, too see how they affect the employee loyalty of post high school educated individuals. By contributing with an understanding of how employees perceive internal employer branding, organizations can use and implement this knowledge when developing their strategies. Method: A qualitative and cross-sectional method with profound, semi- structured interviews, was used to develop a greater understanding of the study object. This, inductive study has processed the collected data through an initial extensive scan which later provided the possibility to code the data. Conclusion: The study shows that employee loyalty is dependent on individual preferences. Some factors within the internal employer branding showed to be key for the employee loyalty. Organizations must clarify the structure of each factor to the employees. Or else, employee loyalty is unlikely to develop.

Resumen
This thesis, in conjunction with a practical compositional portfolio of 9 compositions, traces my development as a composer. Using sociological, historical and phenomenological analysis provides a contextualised account of the many influences acting on me as a composer. I have drawn heavily on the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu's sociology places emphasis on a reflexive research methodology which aims to unite the dichotomies between structural and phenomenological research in the belief that doing so will enable a researcher to produce a more self- aware, rounded study. Using a reflexive methodology in analysing my work allows me to account for my technical and aesthetic developments as a composer and also to question how historical, social and geographical factors have had an influence on my music. Bourdieu's sociology has led me to investigate how such issues have had an effect on all who occupy positions within the field of contemporary composition in Ireland, including practitioners, academics, critics and all who have acquired an appetite for such composition. Adopting a sociological perspective has become increasingly accepted as a means of countering the dominance of charismatic ideology which can be encouraged through self-referential analysis alone. Bourdieu's approach has enabled me to step away from a purely personal analysis and in doing so to realise the reasons for my own biases, beliefs, hopes and aspirations which often lie beyond the limits of a biographical approach. As such, I have been able to begin to place myself as a composer within the wider field of contemporary music.

Turris, Sheila A. "Women's responses to potential cardiac symptoms and emergency department care : maintaining personal, social, and physical integrity". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31177.

Resumen
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore how women interpreted and made decisions about their symptoms, and how they subsequently interpreted their experiences of care in the emergency department (ED), in the context of seeking treatment for the symptoms suggestive of cardiac illness. Data were drawn from several sources: 100 hours of naturalistic observation, 17 in depth interviews with 16 women who visited one of two urban EDs between June 2005 and June 2006 for the treatment of symptoms suggestive of cardiac illness, and three interviews with expert ED nurses. The basic social psychological process of maintaining integrity was identified. Three distinct phases were apparent including: "resisting disruption," which occurred before arrival in an ED; "suspending agency," which occurred during an ED visit; and "integrating experiences and knowledge," which occurred after discharge. Focusing on the outcome of interest--treatment seeking in the context of symptoms suggestive of cardiac illness--health-care professionals and researchers have often attempted to understand the process by which women make decisions about seeking medical advice, through the framework of medical knowledge. In contrast, the women in this study drew on many forms of knowledge to understand both their symptoms and their subsequent diagnoses. Employing the framework of personal context, rather than medical knowledge, the women analyzed their symptoms, decided between competing courses of action, and ultimately came to understand the events that took place before, during, and after their visits to the ED. The findings of this study suggest that: (1) women's understandings of their symptoms, and their actions in relation to those symptoms, were strongly influenced by the broader context of their lives as mothers and wives; (2) women's perceptions of the ED as a place that is intense, regulated, and besieged played an important role in decisions about treatment seeking; (3) after discharge from the hospital, women strove to make sense of new knowledge and experiences in ways that were congruent with their images of themselves as "good" and "responsible" individuals.

Resumen

The aims of this licentiate thesis were to explore and describe female and male patients’ conceptions of integrity within health care and to illuminate the conceptions from a gender as well as a personal space boundary perspective. A qualitative design with a phenomenographic approach was used. The participants, 17 male (Study I) and 15 female patients (Study II), all of whom had undergone medical or surgical care, were strategically selected and interviewed. The identified conceptions were also analysed from a gender as well as a personal space boundary perspective.

Three description categories emerged among the male patients (Study I); self-respect, dignity and confidence, while maintaining the self, dignity and confidence were the description categories found among the female patients (Study II). Male patients’ description of self-respect and female patients’ description of maintaining the self were for the most part similar although there were some differences. The conceptions revealed that integrity involves having the courage to set boundaries and having control over the private sphere, one’s self and one’s situation. While the male patients emphasised selfbelief and being alone, their female counterparts stressed that preserving one’s identity was essential in order to maintain the self. Dignity concerned being respected, and the male patients also described dignity as being seen as a trustworthy and whole person, while the women described it as not being exposed. Both male and female patients described confidence, which was related to handling patient information in a confidential way, trusting the professional caregivers, participating as well as balancing or changing the boundaries of integrity if necessary. The male patients also described confidence as being free.

The personal space boundary perspective was useful for explaining the process of respecting the self by opening or closing outgoing and incoming boundaries around the self. The patients had to consider who, when and to what degree others should have access to their personal spaces. The way in which the professional caregivers interacted with the patient influenced the openness of the boundaries.

Resumen
Working mothers are stressed, juggling various roles and responsibilities both at home and at work, which can result in life imbalance. Writing has the potential to help working mothers to more effectively manage the challenges that cause this imbalance. Previous research and studies have shown that engaging in personal narrative writing can have physical and psychological healing effects, enhance problem-solving, lead to self-discovery, and build social connections, all factors that could potentially provide support to working mothers. This qualitative study explored the specific effects that personal narrative writing could have on the lives of working mothers. Initial data collection included autobiographical samples from each participant, in which she described her current issues as a working mother, her coping methods, and her previous experiences with personal writing. Over the next five months, participants were asked to write at least two times per week, at least 20-30 minutes per session, or longer if she felt compelled or simply chose to do so. Participants were interviewed four times: once before they began the study writing, once during the five-month study period, and twice during the post-study periods, during which each participant was also invited to share some of her personal writing as data sources. Analysis of the collected data enabled five themes to emerge: 1) writing can relieve stress; 2) writing can impact problem-solving and memory; 3) writing can impact concepts of identity and self; 4) writers desire to control writing practices; and 5) a relationship exists among motivation, perceived value of writing, and stress relief. From these themes, five recommendations related to establishing balance within the composition classroom were made: 1) balance personal and social elements in composition research; 2) balance personal and social elements in composition instruction; 3) balance personal and social elements through online networks; 4) balance mind and body in composition instruction; 5) balance writing with elements of personal value. From this last recommendation, a Linked Value Balance Model was proposed, which can have applications both for working mothers and within the composition classroom.

Resumen
The phenomenon of Big Data is revolutionizing business and imposes the study of two underlying issues: data protection and economic value of personal data. With the new EU Data Protection Regulation, the use of personal data by corporations has become more limited, giving individuals the right to ask from companies to delete their personal data or transfer it to other competitors. Under these conditions, this preliminary study explores how individuals in the European Union view their new data protection rights and whether they put a price on their privacy, showing that a significant number is willing to make trade-offs.

Resumen
AbstractIn the modern day’s Oral and Maxillofacial surgical practice, complex surgical and aesthetical procedures are being carried out associated with an increased risk of infectious complications. Therefore, to ensure better outcomes of the surgical procedures, it is absolutely necessary that appropriate measures must be taken to decrease the incidence of associated infections. The practices to be carried out for infection control include proper scrubbing procedures for both patient and the operator, specific protocols to be followed by the operating personnel at the time of procedures, proper handling of the instruments and maintaining an aseptic environment throughout the procedure. The main aim of this chapter is to provide information on the preoperative, operative and post-operative protocols that should be adhered to improve the safety of the patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Resumen
Organizations are heavily investing in virtual teams to enhance their performance and competitiveness. These types of teams are made possible by advances in computer-mediated communication and software that allows people to work collaboratively on projects without being co-located or even working at the same time. Managing teams and collaborating online presents unique challenges. Maintaining a productive virtual team requires more than just the willingness of global participants, but even more so the tools to conduct and manage virtual projects. It is therefore important to incorporate online collaboration skills into the IT curriculum at the university level. This chapter provides a general overview of virtual teams; today's collaborative tools, and discuss expertise necessary for virtual teams to be successful.

Institutions should develop comprehensive strategic and business plans for successful e-learning initiatives. Political factors often have significant impact upon the success of e-learning (Berge, 2001). Institutional funding and resources for delivering and maintaining e-learning are critical. Therefore, e-learning strategies must be aligned with and fully supported by the institutions’ missions and strategic plans. E-learning initiatives require orchestration of personnel with diverse skills sets (Belanger & Jordan, 2000).

Resumen
This paper summarizes many years of experience in designing and testing composite materials for use on offshore oil and gas pipelines and production equipment. It is the authors’ position that properly designed coatings and coverings can materially extend the life and safety of subsea equipment, whereas improper design can often contribute to premature failure and endanger both equipment and personnel. The principal applications of the authors’ research fall into four areas: (1) Buoyancy – providing buoyant lift to offset excessive weight of equipment in water; (2) Controlled Strength – providing precision compressibility to mitigate possible downhole annular pressure damage (3) Insulation – providing thermal protection against heat loss; and (4) Corrosion Protection – ensuring that all coatings work with (rather than against) cathodic protection systems. The potential for catastrophic damage in any or all of these areas is increasing daily as production moves into deeper water and hotter, higher-pressure wells. The paper presents case studies, cites test evidence, and suggests guidelines for designing composite materials that enhance safety in each of the subject areas. The resulting information will be useful to engineers, supervisors, and managers whose responsibility includes offshore design, maintenance, and safety.

Resumen
The article presents a differential analysis of the adaptation strategies of fly-in-fly-out personnel. The study involved 359 fly-in-fly-out workers operating in the south and north of Russia. Empirical material was collected through five scientific expeditions in the fields of diamond, oil and gas production, the construction of gas pipelines, the construction of a bridge and an offshore oil platform. Research methods are questioning, psychophysiological and psychological testing aimed at the diagnosis of functional conditions and personal characteristics of the staff. Statistical processing was carried out using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s X2. In the framework of this work, we proceed from the understanding of adaptation strategies as the holistic management of an employee by his ergatic system, aimed at maintaining the necessary level of working capacity and functional state in the process of fulfilling professional duties in various conditions while preserving the employee’s physical and mental health, and considered for a long completed period of time . The study revealed the prevailing types of adaptation strategies (economical and emergency) among representatives of various industries and depending on the region where the industrial facility is located. The study was carried out in continuation of the empirical studies series on the socioenvironmental professional adaptation of fly-in-fly-out personnel.

Resumen
Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is a fundamental problem for nuclear, fossil, and combined cycle power plants which can result in the loss of power generation, damage to equipment, and personnel injury. These documented events and failures have attracted the attention of utilities, industry groups, and regulatory agencies. The economic impact of FAC in terms of lost power, lost revenue, damaged equipment and components, and personnel injury has gained increased attention. The mechanism of FAC involves the formation and removal of the protective oxide layer from the inside surface of the pipe or equipment. This process occurs in carbon steel piping systems, tanks, and vessels. The FAC process is influenced by flow rate, pH, oxygen content, operating temperature, material of construction, and piping configuration. To oversee and manage Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) in power plants, utilities have assigned personnel the responsibility to manage the FAC program either at the corporate level or a site representative or both. One of the keys in managing FAC is the relationship, interface, and communication with the other disciplines within the organization. Some of these disciplines include Management, Operations, Maintenance, Design Engineering, System Engineering, Water Chemistry, Plant Documentation, and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE). Their responsibilities within the organization and to each other are critical in keeping the plant on-line and minimizing personnel injury. In addition, it is the foundation for maintaining an effective Flow Accelerated Corrosion Program. These relationships and responsibilities within the FAC Program will be discussed in this paper.

Resumen
Monitoring the leakage and condition of Emergency Shutdown Valves (ESVs) on offshore oil and gas platforms is an essential part of maintaining the safety of personnel and protecting the environment. Failure of these valves to operate when they are needed also has an enormous economic impact. The ESVs are intended to isolate each section of the platform in the event of a line break or fire, preventing hydrocarbons from flowing into the affected section. This paper describes a unique approach to monitoring these valves for leakage while the systems are in operation.

Resumen
Energy management in large buildings and facilities has become a major issue due to the fluctuations of energy supply and demand. Saving energy, in particular electricity, while maintaining an adequate level of comfort for building occupants is a major consideration for those with responsibility for commercial facilities — including financial, operational and engineering personnel. This session first reviews the types of systems that have developed in this space and how they compare, feature by feature. Then, to simplify this landscape from an energy users perspective, an “energy readieness” classification is presented that allows energy users to pick a path and a set of systems that is most approriate for their individual situation.

Resumen
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a one of the largest and diverse science and technological institutions in the world. The size and sophistication of LANL’s facilities and workforce present a unique challenge to develop and implement a Quality Assurance (QA) program that meets LANL’s needs. LANL has updated its QA Program to a targeted, requirements-based approach, and broadened its Quality Assurance technical expertise into essential technical areas. The expanded areas of expertise include engineering, project management, nuclear facility operations, and weapons design and fabrication. This approach is achieving success as evidenced on an institutional level by LANL’s receipt of various national, international and local awards for its products and services. Success is also realized on the QA Program level with sufficient recognition of the importance of the QA Program by the LANL workforce. However, QA program challenges remain in areas of expanding the importance of QA; streamlining the grading process and ensuring the program is commensurate with risk and customer expectations; maintaining sufficient authority and freedom from line management for deployed QA personnel while continuing to increase the technical breadth of QA personnel. These are the focus areas to continuously improve the LANL QA Program.

Resumen
Steam turbine owners are often searching for opportunities to increase power output. Increases in steam turbine flow capacity yield a proportional increase in power output, but there is more to increasing capacity than just opening up nozzle areas. This paper describes how Mechanical Dynamics and Analysis personnel increased the flow capacity and power output using original blading on a large, supercritical, reheat unit while maintaining a high level of efficiency. Much attention was given to the as-left stage properties in order to minimize the change in efficiency from the design levels. The work is documented using a timeline which centers on the outage. Much of the engineering work done prior to the outage minimized the time necessary during the outage to complete the modifications. Before and after test results demonstrate the cost-benefit of the capacity increase.

Resumen
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is working with federal-and private-sector representatives to develop a cyber security self-assessment method (the Method) for use in the electric power industry. The Method will assist facility owners in identifying and characterizing cyber vulnerabilities, potential adverse consequences, cyber security risk levels, and cost-effective protection and mitigation measures. The Method supports a comprehensive, expeditious assessment that can be integrated efficiently into normal business practices. Personnel in information systems, plant operations, and security all would contribute to the assessment. The risk assessment stage of the Method evaluates both external and internal threats. In the risk management stage, potential protection and mitigation measures are evaluated based on risk reduction; the costs of purchasing, installing, operating, and maintaining new protection and mitigation measures; and changes in the cost of doing business that may be associated with the implementation of new measures.

Resumen
Commissioning software on a drillship involves many programmers, some located remotely, where all personnel are under time pressure to quickly complete the software tasks. Managing software changes under these conditions is difficult; leading to a deviation of the personnel involved in the project. Deviations from quality procedures in many cases lead to loss of time and negatively impact software quality. As an example, software on three of the drilling control chairs was updated and the fourth drilling control chair was missed, which causes improper integration and potentially leads to safety issues and ultimately downtime. Maintaining software quality during commissioning of the ship is very challenging and becomes more complicated when control system software interfaces have not been verified before commissioning. Early verification of the software provides a known foundation and opportunity to discover concept errors and software defects in advance. Before commissioning, updates and changes can be evaluated more carefully, helping to provide thoughtful consideration of options and impact of the changes to the system’s software as a whole. At the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), the software verification may not occur and sometimes the software in the control system is only to demonstrate mechanical functions of the hardware. This leads to insufficiently tested and thus, unacceptable software being delivered with the equipment initially. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) is another piece of software that has to be updated to match the changes made to the control system software it is connected to. In some cases, the personnel programming the HMIs are separate from the personnel programming the control system, which leads to failed functions and delays. Software changes of any form must be controlled throughout the process. Modifications made to one software function can affect previously approved and working functions which may lead to unexpected functioning of the software. To mitigate these errors, regression testing of the functions is essential. Without doing so, defects introduced during commissioning may not be discovered until the operational phase of the ship, which can prove much more costly so late in the process. Following the management of change program requires commitment and communication because of the extensive details involved with all programs. Effort must be expended to keep communication between programmers functioning smoothly. They have to maintain a common goal and focus on the software change and management should enforce software quality procedures.

Resumen
Currently, the only viable means of providing power and maintaining human control during underwater ROV operation is through the vehicle’s tether. Due to the high cost of ROVs and their tethers as well as potential risks to equipment and personnel, a realistic simulator is needed to train their pilots. To accurately simulate the tether, it is important to detect collisions of the tether with the environment and with itself as well as to calculate the forces involved. The aim of this work is to present a computationally efficient and accurate method of detecting tether self-contact. To this end, a combinatorial global optimisation method is first used to determine the approximate separation distances. Then, a local optimisation scheme is used to find the exact separation distance and the location of the closest points. This information can then be used to determine whether or not a collision has occurred. If a collision is detected, a force is applied at the collision site to maintain separation.
