Abstract A synthetic section is proposed for the Aptian-Albian blue marls of the Vocontian basin (SE France), in the western part of the Alpine Tethys sea. In spite of its homogeneous aspect, the section presents a cyclic sedimentation throughout. Rock-Eval pyrolysis data giving total organic carbon and type of organic matter, allows us to sketch the vertical distribution of organic matter. Three major episodes of orgamic rich sedimentation, underlined by some scarce calcareo-phosphatic nodule girdles, are pointed out: (1) Bedoulian (pro parte) at the very base of the formation, (2) Lower and Middle Albian, and (3) Vraconian (lower part). The good preservation of marine organic materials in these sediments is a consequence of anoxia generated by a strong stratification of the water mass. These episodes are not strictly confined to the Vocontian basin, bur are also known in pelagic environments of the Alpine sea and Tethyan domains. They are clearly linked to transgressive pulses. The mechanism that may be involved spilled over into basins of slightly salted waters generated on vast continental platforms like the model proposed by Busson [1984] for genesis of mid-Cretaceous black shales of the northern and central Atlantic.

Abstract In the eastern part of the Aquitaine Basin and to the south of the Toulouse high, the Subpyrenean trough is a narrow trench oriented N110°E to N130° E. The deposits on the northeastern side of this depression are preserved in the autochthonous Mesozoic cover of the Variscan Mouthoumet Massif, but also in the parautochthonous or allochthonous tectonic units that fringe to the north (Camps – Peyrepertuse slice, fig. 2) the North Pyrenean frontal thrust. From the Middle Cenomanian to the Lower Santonian included (96 to 85 Ma ago), the sedimentation in the Mouthoumet Massif indicates shallow marine carbonate or mixed (carbonate to terrigenous) conditions. The different facies depend mainly on two parameters : the variations of the accommodation space for sedimentation and the location of the numerous rudist buildups. The deposits are first organized in a homoclinal ramp until the Turonian. From the Coniacian up to the early Santonian, drowned platform patterns prevail. During the late Santonian and more precisely around 85 Ma with an other event around 84 Ma, the Mouthoumet Massif and its cover broke up under tectonic stresses. Positive and negative topographies reactivate the Variscan fault system. Platform – slope/basin morphologies substituted the preceeding ramp and drowned platform morphology. Looking to the south and in the direction N120°E, the distal slope received gravitational and turbiditic sediments called the Grès de Labastide (fig. 7). The sediment supply shifted from north to south and from east to west. To the north of this slope, the platform itself broke up into a mosaic of rhomboedric blocks, leading to a graben and horst morphology. Those units are clearly different according to the character of their sedimentary facies, deltaic or reefal (Montagne des Cornes, Calcaires de Camps – Peyrepertuse). The detailed stratigraphic and sedimentologic studies of some of these systems reveal a tectono-sedimentary evolution involving two successive cycles Ss1 (lower Upper Santonian) and Ss2 (Uppermost Santonian). In the western part of the Mouthoumet Massif this cyclic evolution is recorded from south to north, on the Parahou slope, the Rennes-les-Bains graben and the Bugarach horst. The lower cycle Ss1, located on the Rennes-les-Bains graben, is approximatively 85 Ma to 84 Ma in age. It starts with reworked deposits (lowstand systems tract) made up of sometimes several m3 elements derived from former sedimentary deposits (from Turonian up to Lower Santonian) even when the same deposits are in place on the adjacent horsts (e.g. the eastern horst of Bugarach). Those reworked deposits fill the bottom of the graben, principally in the transit zones (debris-flows of the Conglomerat de la Ferrière), or in the Parahou slope (slumps and debris-flows of the Cascade des Mathieux); then the deltaic complex of Rennes-les-Bains covers the older chaotic deposits; the blue marls and the overlying sandy facies (transgressive and highstand systems tracts) related to prodelta and deltafront deposits represent the infilling of the Rennes-les Bains graben. The upper cycle Ss2 developed probably between 84 Ma to 83,5 Ma; its geographical extension overlaps the limits of the lower cycle (e.g. the Bugarach horst), but its sedimentary organisation is still the same including: on the Parahou slope debris-flow and intrabasinal reworking (Conglomérat des Gascous: lowstand systems tract); on the northern platform transgressive and highstand systems tracts, present in the Montagne des Cornes delta where the Marnes bleues de Sougraigne represent the prodelta deposits, and the terrigenous and rudist buildups of the delta front deposits (fig.7). The final infilling results from the spreading from NE to SW, of the (estuarine ? to) fluvial deposits of the Grès d’Alet Formation at around 83 Ma. In the eastern part of the Mouthoumet Massif, sedimentary development is punctuated by tectonic events. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify in some outcrops the main elements of the two tectono-sedimentary cycles. – The cycle Ss1 is partly preserved in the genetic sequence which links the Calcaires de Camps-Peyrepertuse (shelf margin wedge systems tract) and the Marnes du Pla de Sagnes (transgressive systems tract). The cycle Ss2 is only known through different facies of the Grès de Labastide Formation: reworked deposits on the slope; coarse-grained silicoclastic deposits on the transit zones. – In the cycle Ss1 differences appear between the western and the eastern parts of the Mouthoumet massif. When in the western area deltaic conditions prevailed, in the eastern area a shallow carbonate and buildup facies developed. Such differences disappear in the cycle Ss2 by the general establishment of fore slope deltaic deposits. The geodynamic reconstruction resulting from plate kinematics indicates a major change between the early Coniacian (89 Ma) and the Middle Campanian (79 Ma), when the sinistral/divergent motion of Iberia with respect to stable Europe turned to a dextral/convergent movement. The tectono-sedimentary events presented here took place during this period (85 Ma to 83 Ma). The tectono-sedimentary evolution of the subpyrenean trough and the shift of the European and Iberian plates are thought to be intimately linked. The new chronological and geodynamical data proposed herein show that the genesis and the evolution of the subpyrenean sedimentary processes related to the northern Aquitanian margin of the Subpyrenean trough allow to draw some basic conclusions: – the opening of the Subpyrenean trough occurred in two steps, the first around 85 Ma and the second around 84 Ma; – this caused a change in the sedimentary setting with platform environments replacing the earlier ramp geometry; – the Subpyrenean trough formed and evolved under transtensive tectonic conditions; – during the late Santonian two tectono-eustatic sequences marked the former stages of the eastward opening and infilling of this basin; – the diachronous infilling which began here around 83,5 Ma prograded to the western Plantaurel and Petites-Pyrénées area; – no significant northward shifting of the depositional-axis of the Senonian basins occurred; – only a gradual westward shift of the depositional centers, along the subpyrenean direction of the slope area (N110°E to N130°E) was noticed.

Resumen
Pour suivre la fréquentation du parc marin du Saguenay–Saint-Laurent par le rorqual bleu (Balaenoptera musculus) et le rorqual commun (Baleanoptera physalus) ainsi que la concentration de leur nourriture, le krill, un observatoire acoustique a été opéré de 2007 à 2017 à l’est du parc. L’information nouvelle qu’apportent ces séries temporelles décennales montre que : a) la présence des rorquals est relativement stable, et que les deux espèces ont visité la région chaque année, particulièrement dans la 2e moitié de l’an, jusqu’à l’apparition des glaces; b) les dates de début et de fin varient, et cette fréquentation saisonnière est plus intense tard en automne qu’au cours de l’été, alors que l’écotourisme d’observation des baleines bat son plein; c) la concentration de krill est élevée (50 % du temps supérieure à 176 t/km2) mais subit d’importantes fluctuations sur de courtes périodes, sans lien particulièrement fort avec des forçages physiques ou biologiques de plus d’un jour, tel celui des marées semi-mensuelles, d’après les analyses de rythmes effectuées. La concentration quotidienne de krill tendait vers un maximum de la mi-décembre à la mi-février. Dans un contexte de réchauffement planétaire, la présence hivernale des rorquals pourrait se prolonger si la période englacée diminue.

Resumen
La formation des marnes bleues apto-albiennes du domaine vocontien contient de nombreux horizons a concretions septariennes barytiques et/ou carbonatees. L'analyse de ces concretions a l'aide de diverses techniques, et en faisant varier les echelles d'observation, a permis de mettre en evidence les differentes etapes de leur croissance en relation avec l'evolution des eaux interstitielles dans le sediment encaissant. Les principaux mecanismes invoques quant a la genese de ces concretions sont la cimentation directe dans les pores du sediment et/ou la recristalliation de materiel primaire. Le carbonate est issu de l'encaissant originellement riche en especes dissoutes, alors que la barytine provient de l'interaction dans la zone de sulfato-reduction de deux fluides de salinite differente. Le phenomene de fracturation (septarisation) des concretions a ete apprehende par des approches bi et tridimentionnelles. Les mecanismes en cause ont une double origine (chimique: dessication et physique: compaction). Des essais mecaniques menes sur trois nodules barytiques ont montre l'existence de contraintes residuelles temoins de la deformation originelle

Resumen
Les niveaux gargasiens et albiens du Bassin vocontien (Sud-Est de la France) sont constitués par des marnes sombres dénomées "Marnes Bleues". Elles renferment en de nombreux points, des nodules barytiques qui ont été étudiés par PAILLERET (1983) . Une étude minéralogique, granulométrique et géochimique est effectuée sur dix coupes, de situations géographiques et d 'âges différents. La minéralogie des argiles est dominée par l'héritage, et elle permet de différencier trois périodes : - Gargasien - Albien inférieur: l'illite est dominante; - Albien moyen: les smectites prennent le pas sur l'illite; - Albien supérieur: les smectites dominent toujours, mais il apparait une proportion importante de kaolinite. Ces observations sont comparées avec celles de BROSSE (1982) sur les black shales gargaso-albiens de l'Atlantique Central. Un certain nombre d'indices minéralogiques et de relations entre la minéralogie et la géochimie des marnes nous font envisager une origine diagénétique pour certains minéraux: la chlorite, le quartz et certains minéraux entourés d'une auréole de lattes. Il n'existe pas de variations minéralogiques et/ou géochimiques importantes dans les horizons à nodules barytiques. Cependant dans les niveaux à nodules de l'Albien moyen et supérieur. la teneur en Ba est anormalement élevée et se traduit systématiquement par la présence de cristaux de barite (de l'ordre de 1 micron) * dans l'encaissant. L'étude granulométrique couplée aux résultats de l'analyse minéralogique permet de construire un modèle pour expliquer les différents types de croissance des nodules barytiques . Les teneurs anormales en Ba ne sont pas d ' origine détritique : il n'existe aucune relation entre la teneur en Ba dans la roche totale ou la fraction argileuse et la proportion en smectites ou en illites des marnes. Tant que les teneurs en Ba restent faibles, une corrélation avec les quantités de silice biogénique permet de retenir une origine diagénétique pour cet élément. Mais cette relation disparait lorsque les teneurs sont très élevées. Seule l'hypothèse d'une origine hydrothermale peut alors être avancée. Des déc0uvertes récentes (PAULL et al. , 1984) sur un hydrothermalisme "froid" donnent un nouvel éclairage à ce problème.

La surexploitation des ressources halieutiques a conduit à une crise majeure du secteur de la pêche professionnelle. Dans ce contexte, les pêcheries artisanales, et notamment les pêcheries aux petits métiers côtiers, apparaissent comme des modes d'exploitation potentiellement durables des ressources côtières. La diversité des engins utilisés et des espèces ciblées rend néanmoins complexe le suivi de cette composante importante de la pêche professionnelle. L'activité de pêche artisanale reste ainsi très peu évaluée en Méditerranée, et notamment à l'échelle d'une Aire Marine Protégée (AMP). Les AMP sont pourtant de plus en plus utilisées comme des outils de gestion de ces pêcheries, les effets des différentes mesures de gestion mises en place étant à même de bénéficier aux pêcheurs professionnels. A l'heure où le nombre d'AMP se multiplie, il apparaît alors nécessaire pour les gestionnaires comme pour les scientifiques de disposer d'indicateurs permettant de suivre l'activité de pêche professionnelle sur le territoire d'une AMP, et d'évaluer les effets de la gestion sur cette activité. Un protocole d'enquête pour le suivi de la pêche artisanale aux petits métiers côtiers a ainsi été mis en place entre juillet 2009 et juin 2010 au sein du Parc Marin de la Côte Bleue (PMCB), AMP méditerranéenne française comprenant deux réserves marines d'âge et de taille différents. Les données récoltées ont permis d'identifier sept métiers principaux pratiqués par les pêcheurs du PMCB, et de les caractériser par un groupe d'espèces cibles, un engin, un territoire et une période de pêche. L'effort de pêche et les captures ont alors pu être estimés à partir de ces métiers
The overexploitation of fishery resources has led to a major fisheries crisis. In this context, artisanal fisheries, and in particular small-scale coastal fisheries, appear as relevant alternatives for a sustainable use of coastal resources. But the diversity of fishing gears and targeted species diversity make it difficult to assess this important component of the commercial fishery. Hence, the activity of small-scale artisanal fishing remains poorly known in the Mediterranean Sea and few studies focus on an assessment of this activity at the scale of a Marine Protected Area (MPA). MPAs are yet more and more used as management tools for these fisheries, as protection effects and targeted access regulations may benefit to commercial fishers. As many MPAs are going to be established in the short term, it seems necessary for managers and for scientists, to have indicators to monitor the artisanal small-scale coastal fishing activity within an MPA, and to estimate the effects of MPA management on this activity. A field protocol was defined and implemented between July 2009 and June 2010 within the Parc Marin de la Côte Bleue (PMCB), a French Mediterranean MPA including two marine reserves of different age and size. The collected data allowed identifying seven main métiers within the PMCB, and characterizing them by group of target species, type of gear, fishing grounds and fishing periods. Fishing effort and catch were estimated. In the Côte Bleue area, 3 512 fishing trips and 4645 fishing operations were performed by 30 active boats during the studied period, for a total of 10 300 km of immersed nets

Cette thèse analyse les dynamiques de changement du système énergétique en se focalisant sur les énergies marines renouvelables (EMR). A travers l’examen de dix études de cas (études à la fois sectorielles et territoriales), elle s’interroge sur les raisons du retour de ces technologies au tournant des années 2000. Mises à la marge du paradigme dominant de la production d’électricité des années 1980, nous montrons que les énergies marines renouvelables sont revenues sur le devant de la scène dans un contexte de crise systémique des 3E (environnementale, économique et énergétique). A l’interface des politiques énergétiques (celles de la transition énergétique) et des politiques maritimes (celles de la croissance bleue), les énergies marines renouvelables ont été légitimées au moment où la mer est devenue un terrain pour (re)construire des discours visionnaires, avant-gardistes et technopolitiques. Par ce biais, nous mettons en lumière l’importance des croyances et des représentations collectives sur l’activité technologique. Au regard de la diversité des trajectoires technologiques examinées (énergie des marées et des courants, énergie des vagues, énergie thermique des mers et éolien marin), nous montrons que « la filière » des énergies marines renouvelables se présente en France comme une construction politique sans cohérence technologique affirmée entre des univers techniques différents. Cette thèse permet également de relativiser la notion d’innovation de rupture et de destruction créatrice en mettant en évidence des phénomènes de résurgence technologique pouvant durer plusieurs décennies, voire plusieurs siècles, dans l’exploitation de sources d’énergies renouvelables. Enfin, en s’inscrivant dans une démarche rétro-prospective, cette thèse défend l’idée que les processus fondamentaux dans la dynamique de changement du système énergétique ne sont pas la création et la nouveauté mais plutôt l’actualisation et la réinterprétation. Elle entend ainsi apporter une contribution originale aux interrogations à la fois des économistes, des sociologues et des historiens des techniques, qui chacun dans leur domaine tentent de comprendre les trajectoires de l'innovation et les conditions de réussite des technologies de l’énergie
This thesis sheds light on the dynamics of change in the energy system by taking the example of marine renewable energies (MRE). By exploring ten case studies (both sectoral and territorial), it reflects on the reasons for the return of these technologies in the 2000’s. Previously excluded from the dominant paradigm of French electricity production, in the 1980s, marine renewable energies are currently making a comeback in the context of the systemic crisis of the 3Es (environmental, economic and energy). At the interface of energy policies (energy transition policies) and maritime policies (blue growth policies), marine renewable energies were legitimized when the sea became a new horizon for (re)building visionary, avant-garde and technopolitical discourses. Through this, we highlight the importance of beliefs and collective representations of technological activity. Through the diversity of technological trajectories discussed in this thesis (tidal stream and tidal range energy, wave energy, ocean thermal energy conversion and offshore wind energy), we show that, in France, the industry of marine renewable energies presents itself as a political construction without asserted technological consistency, at the interface between different technical worlds. This thesis put into perspective the notion of disruptive innovation and creative destruction by highlighting phenomena of technological rebirth, which can take several decades and even centuries. Through a retroprospective analysis, this thesis defends the idea that the dynamics of change of the energy system are not mainly driven by creation and novelty, but could, rather, be construed as a process of update and reinterpretation of existing technological principles. À l’échelle d’un territoire, la mise en place de la Trame Verte et Bleue ne peut se faire sans connaissances des espèces présentes, de la qualité écologique des habitats les accueillant et des connexions existantes entre les habitats. Les mares sont souvent décrites comme des points relais (i. E. Stepping stone) favorisant les échanges d’individus entre populations. L’objectif de ce travail est d’étudier le rôle des mares dans le maintien des connectivités en faveur des odonates ainsi que dans le maintien des communautés d’odonates à l’échelle du paysage. Plus particulièrement, cette étude porte sur les relations entre les espèces d’odonates et les caractéristiques environnementales des mares. La connectivité, quant à elle, est abordée en étudiant la dispersion d’une espèce de demoiselles (i. E. Ischnura elegans) de manière directe (i. E. Capture-Marquage-Recapture, suivis individuels, translocations) et indirecte (i. E. Flux de gènes). Le premier chapitre est focalisé sur l’influence des variables biotiques et abiotiques des mares, de leur localisation géographique et de leur contexte paysager environnant sur les communautés d’odonates. Les résultats obtenus montrent que deux mares plus proches géographiquement et écologiquement vont avoir plus d’espèces d’odonates en commun. Aussi, les zygoptères et les anisoptères ne répondent pas de la même manière aux variables environnementales des mares. Le deuxième chapitre de résultats s’attarde sur l’importance de la variabilité des mares dans le maintien du pool régional d’espèces. Le contexte dans lequel se situe la mare est important à considérer. Les mares agricoles favorisent le pool d’espèces d’odonates dans sa globalité. Les mares urbaines favorisent préférentiellement le pool de zygoptères et les mares forestières, le pool d’anisoptères. Ces différences sont à mettre en relation avec les traits des espèces (i. E. Mode de ponte, envergure, nombre de générations par an). Le troisième chapitre s’est concentré sur l’étude des déplacements locaux d’Ischnura elegans en relation avec les caractéristiques locales des mares et leur contexte paysager. Les différentes approches effectuées (i. E. Capture-Marquage-Recapture, suivis individuels, translocations) ont mis en évidence un effet du contexte paysager avec des déplacements sur de plus longues distances en milieu agricole qu’en milieu urbain. En cas d’assèchement de la mare, les individus passent sur la mare voisine en contexte agricole. Pour finir, la survie n’est pas dépendante des caractéristiques de la mare. Le dernier chapitre de résultats met l’accent sur l’étude des flux de gènes d’Ischura elegans à l’échelle de la Seine-Maritime. Une structuration génétique est mise en évidence ainsi qu’un isolement par la distance jusqu’à une distance de 9. 5 km. Ischunra elegans est donc une espèce mobile à l’échelle du paysage via les mares présentes. Les résultats obtenus lors de ce travail confirment l’importance des mares dans le maintien des communautés d’odonates et leurs rôles de point relais pour la dispersion des individus. La mare est un habitat essentiel à considérer dans la mise en place de la Trame Verte et Bleue
At a regional scale, the establishment of the « Trame Verte et Bleue » cannot be achieved without knowledge of species presence, of the ecological quality of habitats hosting these species and existing connections between these habitats. Ponds are often described as stepping stones promoting the exchange of individuals between populations. The objective of this study was to determine the role of ponds in maintaining favourable connectivity for Odonata and in maintenance of Odonata communities at a landscape scale. Specifically, this study focuses on the relationships between species of Odonata and environmental characteristics of ponds. Connectivity, for its part, is approached by studying dispersal of a damselfly species (i. E. Ischnura elegans) directly (i. E. Capture-Mark-Recapture, individual tracking, translocation) and indirectly (i. E. Gene flow). The first chapter focuses on the influence of biotic and abiotic variables of ponds, their geographic location and surrounding landscape context on Odonata communities. Results show that two geographically and ecologically closer ponds will have more Odonata species in common. Also, Zygoptera and Anisoptera do not respond in the same way to environmental characteristics of ponds. The second chapter focuses on the importance of ponds variability in the maintenance of regional species pool. The context of the pond is important to consider. Field ponds promote the pool of Odonata species in its entirety. Urban ponds preferentially promote the pool of Zygoptera species and forest ponds promote the pool of Anisoptera species. These differences are to be linked to species traits (i. E. Laying mode, wingspan, number of generations per year). The third chapter focuses on the study of Ischnura elegans local movements in relation to ponds local characteristics and landscape context. The different approaches taken (i. E. Capture-Mark-Recapture, individual tracking, translocation) have shown an effect of landscape context on movements over longer distances in field contexts compared to urban contexts. In case of a pond drying up, individuals go to the nearest pond in field contexts. Finally, survival is not dependent on pond characteristics The last chapter focuses on the study of gene flow of Ischnura elegans across Seine-Maritime. A genetic structure is highlighted and an isolation by distance up to a distance of 9. 5 km. Ischnura elegans is consequently a mobile species at a landscape scale through available ponds. Results obtained in this study confirm ponds importance in maintaining Odonata communities and their roles of stepping stones for the dispersal of individuals. The pond is an essential habitat to consider in the establishment of the « Trame Verte et Bleue »

En aquaculture et plus particulièrement en écloserie de mollusques, la culture des microalgues, et notamment d’lsochrysis affinis galbana (T-Iso), est une tâche essentielle pour la nutrition des stades larvaires. Grâce à la culture en continu, il semble possible aujourd’hui de fournir aux écloseries une production stable en quantité et en qualité à moindre coût. Dans cette optique et dans un premier temps, les possibilités d’optimisation de la production quantitative de T-Iso en culture continue ont été étudiées, à travers le contrôle des conditions environnementales. Un plan d’expérience a permis de révéler des interactions significatives entre température et pH, d’une part et pH et éclairement, d’autre part et de proposer, comme valeurs combinées optimales pour la croissance, une température de 30°C , un pH de 6. 8 et un éclairement de 780 µmol photon m-2 s-1. En parallèle, l’efficacité de I lumière pour la croissance a été calculée sur la base d’expériences en turbidostat à faible densité cellulaire et montre une valeur optimale bien inférieure aux valeurs de saturation de la croissance par la lumière. Enfin, les besoins nutritifs azotés et phosphorés de T-Iso, relatif et absolus, ont été établis en fonction du taux de dilution par l’intermédiaire du ratio critique RC et du taux d’absorption de chaque nutriment par les cellules, respectivement. Dans un deuxième temps, les possibilités d’orientation métabolique offertes par la production stabilisée de T-Iso en culture continue ont été évaluées, d’une part dans le cas de limitations nutritives et, d’autre part, dans le cas d’une modification de la qualité spectrale de la lumière
In aquaculture, especially for bivalves hatcheries, culture of Isochrysis affinis galbana (T-Iso) is a key issue for larvae feeding. Continuous culture provides a means for cheaper, quantitatively and qualitatively stable production of microalgae in bivalves hatcheries. In a first attempt, optimal culture conditions for the continuous culture of Isochrysis affinis galbana were investigated by assessing the effect of irradiance, temperature, ph and nitrogen and phosphorus limitation. Results of an experimental design revealed significant interactions between pH and irradiance on the one hand, and temperature and pH on the other hand and showed that the highest growth rate was achieved under 780 µmol photon m-2 s-1 for irradiance, 30°C for temperature and 6. 8 for pH. The growth rate-irradiance relationship was investigated in turbidostat for optically clear cultures, and irradiance efficiency for growth rate was shown to be maximal at irradiance much lower than saturation irradiance. Additionally, absolute and relative requirements for nitrogen and phosphorus were assessed as a function of dilution rate under nutrient limitation. Secondly, metabolic orientation of T-Iso in stable continuous cultures was evaluated in relation with limited nutrient supplies, on the one hand, and in relation with spectral quality of light, on the other hand. Severe nitrogen and phosphorus limitations increased storage of energetic cellular compounds (carbohydrates, neutral lipids) while weaker nitrogen and phosphorus limitations rather increased structural compounds (polar lipids)

This chapter looks at Bley's first few years in New York. She was most likely eighteen years old when she arrived in the city but it is not clear exactly when Bley first got there. New to the city, she slept temporarily in Grand Central Station and then paid for an inexpensive hotel room near Times Square. She then began working at the jazz clubs Basin Street and Birdland. Shortly after turning twenty-one, during the summer of 1957, she officially changed her name to Carla Borg and started composing regularly. Carla Bley was further encouraged by musicians in Los Angeles. But perhaps most important, her encounter with Charlie Haden marked the start of a lifelong friendship, one that has resulted in some of the most innovative recordings ever made by large jazz ensembles, namely, the Liberation Music Orchestra projects beginning in 1969.

Digital technologies are transforming European societies, politics, and markets. Since the 1970s, the European Union has attempted to navigate these pressures through a package of digital policy-making. These efforts have targeted the dual missions of pan-European market-making, as well as market correction. Relying on a host of governance modes including the regulatory method, policy coordination, incorporated transgovernmental networks, and private governance, the European Union has tried to steer the new information society so as to both spur market growth and protect citizens against abuse. The ultimate success of these efforts has been encumbered by the overall complexity of the sector, where policy efforts quickly bleed over into other issue areas, such as competition policy and justice and home affairs, and have international consequences. Digital policy-making in Europe faces considerable challenges ahead, as EU institutions grapple with the rise of platform companies, disinformation campaigns, and transatlantic disputes over data privacy and the market power of US-based technology companies.

Rural Massachusetts is delightful at the end of summer. The classic New England architecture blends with the lawns, gardens, and green forests into a picture of perfect harmony. It is sunny, and the right time in the afternoon for a stroll around the college town of Amherst. However, after a few blocks a distinct crack appears in this idyll: a traditional white wooden house is being renovated and a skull and crossbones sign on the lawn is telling us to keep out due to danger of lead poisoning. It turns out that the customary white colour of the houses around here was oft en due to lead-based pigments. The use of lead in paints was phased out in 1978, but it is still an issue judging from the 16-page pamphlet available in six languages from the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the criminal cases brought against real estate companies and landlords failing to inform tenants and buyers of the lead status of their homes. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio would probably have agreed with this pamphlet and legislation, and so most certainly would Alice Hamilton. Although almost two millennia separate the Roman engineer from the first woman on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, they are united in the fight against the dangers of lead to the workforce and to the public. We do not know much about the life of the first century BC architect and engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, otherwise known as Vitruvius, except what can be inferred from his famous work The Ten Books on Architecture. This magnum opus, written in the days of the Emperor Augustus, probably represents the summary of the professional experience of an old man. The title is slightly misleading, as architecture in Roman times would cover a much broader area than today. So Vitruvius tells us a great deal about engineering in general, about the chemistry of pigments and, to the benefit of this story, about aqueducts and the proper treatment of water. He is also clearly a conservative man, lashing out against ‘decadent frescos’ and ‘these days of bad taste’.

For more than a century, catatonia has been considered a marker of the Kraepelin/Bleuler concept of schizophrenia. However, over the past half-century, it has been increasingly recognized as a separate entity, independently diagnosable and treatable. This chapter explores the diagnosis, treatment, and biological underpinnings of catatonia. Initially, it lists certain motor behaviours whose presentation might indicate catatonia, according to the Catatonia Rating Scale (CRS) such as mutism, delirium, and repetitive rhythmic acts. Through the intravenous administration of certain drugs, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists, the effect on the patient’s CRS score is used to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment history of catatonia prior to the discovery of the efficacy of benzodiazepines and induced grand mal seizures (electroconvulsive therapy) is broached, such as chemically induced seizures and amobarbital. Finally, its different presentations are discussed, along with its consideration as a biological fear response.

Tube shunts have become an important part of the surgical armamentarium for controlling intraocular pressure (IOP). Once reserved for use only in refractory cases, they are rapidly gaining popularity as an effective alternative to trabeculectomy and cyclodestruction for lowering IOP in patients who are not satisfactorily controlled on medications. Although trabeculectomy remains the most commonly performed glaucoma surgery, tube shunts offer some significant advantages. One of these advantages is a theoretically reduced risk of one of the most feared complications of any penetrating ocular surgery— endophthalmitis. The incidence of late-onset infections such as blebitis and endophthalmitis after trabeculectomy with antifibrotic agents is alarmingly high compared to other penetrating intraocular surgeries, perhaps as high as 5% over 3–5 years. Trabeculectomies produce a perilimbal bleb that may be made thinner and more ischemic by the concomitant use of antifibrotics such as 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin-C (MMC). These anteriorly placed blebs are more exposed, more fragile, and more prone to become infected than the robust, thicker, and more posteriorly located blebs overlying a tube shunt plate. Gedde and associates reported a 1% (1 of 107 eyes) incidence of endophthalmitis after Baerveldt® Glaucoma Implant (BGI) placement compared to a 5% (5 out of 105 eyes) incidence after trabeculectomy with MMC after 5 years of follow-up. However, despite this potential advantage, endophthalmitis still does occur in association with shunts, and it is essential to understand the risk factors for its occurrence and the proper steps to take to prevent, recognize, and treat this potentially devastating complication. Distinguishing sterile from infectious endophthalmitis can be difficult. Signs suggestive of an infectious endophthalmitis include marked inflammation, hypopyon, fibrinoid anterior chamber reaction, corneal edema, marked conjunctival congestion, eyelid edema, vitritis, and retinal periphlebitis. Signs suggestive of a noninfectious etiology are a gradual onset of symptoms, such as pain, redness, and inflammation, in the absence of tube or plate erosion. Sterile endophthalmitis one month after discontinuation of corticosteroid therapy postoperatively has been reported. Possible causes for noninfectious (sterile) endophthalmitis include exacerbated preexisting uveitis, iris trauma, and toxicity from foreign substances introduced during surgery.

As discussed so far, race, place, and music cannot be taken for granted. What they can be taken for arises from processes that happen along two axes. Along the first axis, the figures of blackness, the Pacific, and música del Pacifico are bounded, and bound together, to give them unity of form and stability of meaning. We have seen this process—we might call it stabilization—in the narrowing racial ascription of Pacific sounded practices in the colonial-era process that resulted both in the creative world-making from which black life in the Pacific arose and the heuristics of black atavism that marked the Pacific as unfit for modernity. The second axis both is occluded by stabilization and works to undo it. This is the axis of transformation, of history, by which stabilized reifications bifurcate into new forms as they are instrumentalized under changing political conditions or as they bleed into, feed back from, or abrade against one another and against the trails of associations and the latent traces of older reifications that recur much later. This is also apparent in the transformation of regional folklore into Afro-Colombian culture. The axes of stabilization and transformation produce the commonsensical forms into which meaning solidifies. While making meaning is always a power play, neither the axis of stabilization nor that of transformation is reserved for either the powerful or the abject. Out of the stabilizing and transformational power plays unfurls the story of black Pacific sounded practice traced in this book.

A water wash system has been developed to allow greater operating flexibility of marine gas turbine intake filters in dust/sand conditions. The water wash system provides protection against sand and dust ingestion previously obtainable only with heavy, expensive inertial separators. Routine filter maintenance is greatly simplified with the use of this system and leads to an average pressure drop reduction through the intake system. This reduction results in significant fuel savings. Furthermore, the introduction of a Propylene Glycol/sea water mixture through the water wash system has shown to be an effective alternative to conventional bleed air de-icing under ice/snow conditions.

Technology developments in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing have led to increased natural gas reserves. Development of these unconventional resources is an energy intensive process. Prime-movers of unconventional well development were previously identified to be over-the-road trucks, drilling engines, and hydraulic stimulation engines. Diesel engines dominate these markets but industry is attempting to cut costs by using dual fuel and dedicated natural gas engines. On-road engines are subject to the transient FTP cycle for certification and off-road engines are subject to the 5-mode ISO 8178 D-2 cycle. It is well known that in-use activity can differ from certification activity. Significant in-use activity data for each prime-mover were collected and a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo Simulation with a genetic algorithm was used to develop test cycles for each. The developed test cycles allowed for operation of a smaller yet similar engine within a controlled laboratory environment. Laboratory tests utilized a Cummins 8.9L ISL-G to analyze the emissions of new cycles compared to certification cycles and to examine the effects of fuel quality on emissions. The ISL-G is a spark-ignited engine used for heavy-duty trucks and could see market penetration in fleets serving the well development industry. It is similar in technology to the Waukesha LI7044, which is used in drilling operations — both employ air fuel ratio control and three-way catalysts. For the case of “pump” quality fuel, compressed natural gas was used. The developed OTR truck cycle produced higher brake-specific emissions of CO2, CO, NOx, and lower HC emissions compared to the FTP. The drilling and fracturing cycles tended to have lower CO2 and HC emissions but higher CO emissions when compared to the D-2 cycle. Two additional fuel blends were used on the new cycles and represented blends with higher ethane and propane fractions — which are common to shale gases that could fuel prime-movers in the future. The minimum recommended methane number for this engine was 75 and additional fuel blends had methane numbers of 75.5 (propane blend) and 75.3 (ethane blend). As expected, CO2 emissions increased with increased alkane concentration, while opposite trends were shown for THC and CH4. NOx emissions also tended to decrease with higher ethane and propane blends, across all cycles. For all cycles and fuels, HC emissions were predominately CH4 - 94–97%. Variations in activity and the effects of different fuels should be addressed when estimating emissions since using standard certification or emissions factors may not be representative of in-use emissions.

Hydrogen-based fuels have become a primary interest in the gas turbine market. To better predict the reactivity of mixtures containing different levels of hydrogen, laminar and turbulent flame speed experiments have been conducted. The laminar flame speed measurements were performed for various methane and natural gas surrogate blends with significant amounts of hydrogen at elevated pressures (up to 5 atm) and temperatures (up to 450 K) using a heated, high-pressure, cylindrical, constant-volume vessel. The hydrogen content ranged from 50% to 90% by volume. All measurements were compared to a chemical kinetic model, and good agreement within experimental measurement uncertainty was observed over most conditions. Turbulent combustion experiments were also performed for pure H2 and 50:50 H2:CH4 mixtures using a fan-stirred flame speed vessel. All tests were made with a fixed integral length scale of 27 mm and with a turbulent intensity level of 1.5 m/s at 1 atm initial pressure. Most of the turbulent flame speed results were in either the corrugated or thin reaction zones when plotted on a Borghi diagram, with Damköhler numbers up to 100 and turbulent Reynolds numbers between about 100 and 450. Flame speeds for a 50:50 blend of H2:CH4 for both laminar and turbulent cases were about a factor of 1.8 higher than for pure methane.

As of September 2009, GE Energy (GE) has successfully expanded its large-frame gas turbine product line to burn ultra-low calorific steel mill gas fuel blends, especially mixtures of Blast Furnace Gas (BFG) and Coke Oven Gas (COG). The first two GE frame 9E Gas Turbines in China with this capability have thus far accumulated more than 8000 hours operating on BFG/COG blends. The China site comprises two complete power trains, including GE 9E gas turbines, generators, fuel cleaning equipment, and fuel gas compressors. Since startup, combustion operating parameters have remained within design limits, consistent with the extensive full-scale lab testing GE conducted during the turbine’s design development effort, and comparable to fleet experience on natural gas fired GE gas turbines. Based on this accumulated data set, especially the wide range of gas compositions tested in the combustion lab, similar process gases such as corex and finex gases, and air-blown synthetic gases are operable in this system. The GE 9E platform targets the 50Hz market. For 60Hz applications, a 7EA BFG product is available.

Four Textron Lycoming TF40B marine gas turbine engines are used to power the U.S. Navy’s Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle. This is the first hovercraft of this configuration to be put in service for the Navy as a landing craft. The TF40B has experienced compressor blade pitting, carbon erosion of the first turbine blade and hot corrosion of the hot section. Many of these problems were reduced by changing the maintenance and operation of the LCAC. A Component Improvement Program (CIP) is currently investigating compressor and hot section coatings better suited for operation in a harsh marine environment. This program will also improve the performance of some engine components such as the bleed manifold and bearing seals.

Applications of natural gases that contain high levels of hydrogen have become a primary interest in the gas turbine market. While the ignition delay times of hydrogen and of the individual hydrocarbons in natural gases can be considered well known, there have been few previous experimental studies into the effects of different levels of hydrogen on the ignition delay times of natural gases at gas turbine conditions. To examine the effects of hydrogen content at gas turbine conditions, shock-tube experiments were performed on nine mixtures of an L9 matrix. The L9 matrix was developed by varying four factors: natural gas higher-order hydrocarbon content of 0, 18.75, or 37.5%; hydrogen content of the total fuel mixture of 30, 60, or 80%; equivalence ratios of 0.3, 0.5, or 1; and pressures of 1, 10, or 30 atm. Temperatures ranged from 1092 K to 1722 K, and all mixtures were diluted in 90% Ar. Correlations for each mixture were developed from the ignition delay times and, using these correlations, a factor sensitivity analysis was performed. It was found that hydrogen played the most significant role in the ignition delay times of a mixture. Pressure was almost as important as hydrogen content, especially as temperature increased. Equivalence ratio was slightly more important than hydrocarbon content of the natural gas, but both were less important than pressure or hydrogen content. Comparison with a modern chemical kinetic model demonstrated that the model captures well the relative impacts of H2 content, temperature, and pressure, but some improvements are still needed in terms of absolute ignition delay times.

The Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) upgrades the current TF40B gas turbine engine and analog control system to an Enhanced TF40B (ETF40B) gas turbine with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. This upgrade and enhancement will provide additional engine horsepower, increased engine reliability, modern digital engine control equipment, and a Bleed Air Anti-Ice System (BAAS) for the LCAC during cold weather operations. The original permanent BAAS system for the SLEP configured LCAC has been redesigned as a “removable kit” to reduce overall craft weight and to minimize maintenance for the crews. The development has been an ongoing effort between the Navy, Textron Marine & Land Systems who is the LCAC craft builder, and Vericor Power Systems, who is the ETF40B manufacturer. This paper will document and outline the BAAS development effort and the many lessons learned during the design of a prototype BAAS system for the ETF40B engine.

Consumer product design blends engineering and industrial design principles, and marketing strategies to bring functional, aesthetic products to market. While competitions motivate a diverse set of students to churn out products/ventures, a systematic approach for tackling consumer product design tasks and case studies that demonstrate the approach greatly benefit a number of students by focusing their design efforts. The paper elaborates such an approach using a case study highlighting the thought process. The case study involves the design of an innovative keychain. While the case study was primarily mechanical engineering in scope addressed by a student team of mechanical engineers, the approach outlined in the paper is generic and can be applied to product designs involving other disciplines.
