Resumen
Although failure to account for spatial autocorrelation has been dramatic in some forest progeny trials, little attention has been paid to how this issue may affect selections within the trials. The effects of spatial autocorrelation of height growth on the estimation of genetic gain and on the spatial distribution of the selected trees were studied in four Pinus pinaster Ait. progeny trials that were rogued using different selection methods and intensities. When selections are based on unadjusted original values, selected trees tend to be located in the best microsites and are unlikely to be the most genetically superior. This resulted in a loss of genetic gain that varied between 10% and 20% and sometimes exceeded 30%. Differences in the loss of gain among different selection methods and intensities were minor and followed no clear pattern. Selecting on the basis of a conventional model resulted in spatial patterns of the retained trees that were clearly aggregated in all cases. However, selections based on spatially adjusted data resulted in random spatial patterns, except with family selection because of the use of multiple-tree plots. Because clumping of the retained trees may seriously affect the quantity and quality of the seed crop, breeders are strongly encouraged to use appropriate spatial models for roguing breeding seedling orchards.

Resumen
Abstract The green peach aphid [Myzus persicae (Sulzer)] is an important pest of amaranth grown for leaf consumption (i.e., leafy amaranth) in the tropics. Aphids reduce the amount of fresh leaf yield of amaranth and the value of leafy amaranth as aphid-infested leaves are not marketable. Our objective was to evaluate Amaranthus species selected by a breeding program in East Africa to develop cultivars for leaf consumption with resistance to M. persicae. We focused on antibiosis to determine whether varieties of Amaranthus spp. could be grown without producing an aphid population. Artificial infestations of aphids were placed on multiple selections of three species of Amaranthus: two selections of A. blitum, four selections of A. hybridus and one selection of A. hypochondriacus. Aphid populations were assessed over a 5-wk period. Evaluations of vegetative yield, leaf damage symptoms, and specific leaf area (SLA) were made of the seven selections at the end of this experiment. Aphid populations assessed 49 d after planting differed significantly (P ≤ 0.001) among the amaranth species and within selections of the same species. The selections of A. blitum had the lowest aphid populations, and A. hybridus had the highest populations. Selections of A. hybridus produced the most marketable leaves (i.e., aphid free). The fresh weight of A. blitum were the lowest of the seven selections, whereas A. hybridus had the greatest fresh leaf weight. Implications of these finding for further promotion of amaranth breeding are discussed related to pest management for leaf production.

Resumen
Interactive graph search leverages human intelligence to categorize target labels in a hierarchy, which is useful for image classification, product categorization, and database search. However, many existing interactive graph search studies aim at identifying a single target optimally, and suffer from the limitations of asking too many questions and not being able to handle multiple targets. To address these two limitations, in this paper, we study a new problem of <u>b</u>udget constrained <u>i</u>nteractive <u>g</u>raph <u>s</u>earch for <u>m</u>ultiple targets called kBM-IGS problem. Specifically, given a set of multiple targets T in a hierarchy and two parameters k and b , the goal is to identify a k -sized set of selections S , such that the closeness between selections S and targets T is as small as possible, by asking at most a budget of b questions. We theoretically analyze the updating rules and design a penalty function to capture the closeness between selections and targets. To tackle the kBM-IGS problem, we develop a novel framework to ask questions using the best vertex with the largest expected gain, which provides a balanced trade-off between target probability and benefit gain. Based on the kBM-IGS framework, we first propose an efficient algorithm STBIS to handle the SingleTarget problem, which is a special case of kBM-IGS. Then, we propose a dynamic programming based method kBM-DP to tackle the MultipleTargets problem. To further improve efficiency, we propose two heuristic but efficient algorithms, kBM-Topk and kBM-DP+. Experiments on large real-world datasets with ground-truths verify both the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms.

Resumen
We highlight a feature of personnel selection decisions that can influence the gender diversity of groups and teams. Specifically, we show that people are less likely to choose candidates whose gender would increase group diversity when making personnel selections in isolation (i.e., when they are responsible for selecting a single group member) than when making collections of choices (i.e., when they are responsible for selecting multiple group members). We call this the isolated choice effect. Across six preregistered experiments (n = 3,509), we demonstrate that the isolated choice effect has important consequences for group diversity. When making sets of hiring and selection decisions (as opposed to making a single hire), people construct more gender-diverse groups. Mediation and moderation studies suggest that people do not attend as much to diversity when making isolated selection choices, which drives this effect. Resumen
Encore Azaleas® have become very popular in the Deep South due to multiple bloom cycles. All cultivars are rated for plant hardiness zone 7 and have also performed well in zone 8. The ability of Encore Azalea® cultivars to perform well in the Mid South (zones 6a and 6b) is unknown. A 3-year study was undertaken to determine the performance of 21 cultivars of Encore Azaleas® in multiple locations in zones 6a and 6b. After one winter, several cultivars have had multiple bloom cycles in zone 6a and 6b and suffered little or no freeze damage. These cultivars were Autumn Amethyst™, Autumn Bravo™, Autumn Carnival™, Autumn Chiffon™, Autumn Coral™, Autumn Monarch™, Autumn Rouge™, and Autumn Ruby™. Autumn Amethyst™ had the most consistent bloom cycles in both spring and fall cycles of all cultivars tested. Superior winter hardiness of Autumn Amethyst™ may be due to known winter hardiness of its female parent – `Karen's' (Hindodegiri × Rhododendron yeodensis var. poukhanese).

Resumen
Purpose – Technology is changing the use of textbooks in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of offering multiple textbook formats in the same economics course using textbooks that provided multiple options including new and used printed books, as well as electronic books. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a survey conducted in nine sections of introductory economics classes at a public US university. The study took place within the confines of undergraduate courses that offered textbooks with multiple available formats. A survey collected information about the format each student selected, the factors that students considered when choosing the format, and their overall attitudes about their selection at the end of the semester. Demographic information was also recorded. Findings – The paper finds that students selected a variety of textbook options and identified the factors of cost, ease of use, and learning style as most important to their textbook format decision. Students overwhelmingly support the value of offering choice in textbook formats. In examining student selections further, the paper finds that among students that select an electronic textbook, cost is the dominant factor, while students selecting a new printed textbook mention their learning style and ease of use more often. Students that selected a used printed textbook identified cost, ease of use, and the ability to keep the textbook as factors important to them. Originality/value – This study provides evidence on the impact of having multiple textbook format options within the same course. Overall, the results suggest that the student population has diverse preferences and any uniform policy on textbook format selection may not satisfy the needs of all student groups. Furthermore, students themselves recognize the diversity in learning styles and see value in having options in textbook format selection.

Ayora, Pauline.

Language production is a cognitive activity long studied in isolation from more general cognitive processes that could underlie its achievement. Our approach aimed to contribute to the emerging dynamics of the opening of psycholinguistics to other domains of cognitive psychology by specifying how linguistic mechanisms interact with attentional mechanisms. To do so, we first investigated to which extent producing a single linguistic unit relies on selection mechanisms. Also, we highlighted the attentional mechanisms underlying these lexical selection mechanisms: The selections of two types of grammatical words were compared: open- and closed- class words. Results revealed that the selections of both, closed-class words structuring the phrase, and open-class words conveying meaning, require attentional resources. In a third study, we showed that the semantic interference effect - affecting a competition mechanism supposedly taking place at the level of lexical selection- can in fact be resolved before the involvement of central attentional resources. This suggests that this semantic interference effect possibly reflects a mechanism taking place prior to lexical selection. In a last study, we explored the temporal dynamics of our production system when engaged in the selection of several words within a sequence, using noun phrases. Chronometric results revealed that words are selected strictly sequentially. This dynamics suggests that the way attentional resources are recruited for the selection of an isolated linguistic unit can constrain the way several words are produced in a more natural speaking context

In this study, we propose two biobjective mathematical models based on PROMETHEE V method for project selection problems. We develop an interactive approach (ib-PROMETHEE V) including data mining techniques to solve the first proposed mathematical model. For the second model, we propose NSGA-II with constraint handling method. We also develop a Preference Based Interactive Multiobjective Genetic Algorithm (IMGA) to solve the second proposed mathematical model. We test the performance of NSGA-II with constraint handling method and IMGA on randomly generated test problems.

Resumen
Transformations between different geodetic reference frames are often performed such that first the transformation parameters are determined from control points. If in the first place we do not know which of the numerous transformation models is appropriate then we can set up a multiple hypotheses test. The paper extends the common method of testing transformation parameters for significance, to the case that also constraints for such parameters are tested. This provides more flexibility when setting up such a test. One can formulate a general model with a maximum number of transformation parameters and specialize it by adding constraints to those parameters, which need to be tested. The proper test statistic in a multiple test is shown to be either the extreme normalized or the extreme studentized Lagrange multiplier. They are shown to perform superior to the more intuitive test statistics derived from misclosures. It is shown how model selection by multiple hypotheses testing relates to the use of information criteria like AICc and Mallows’ Cp, which are based on an information theoretic approach. Nevertheless, whenever comparable, the results of an exemplary computation almost coincide.

Resumen
We study the secretary problem in multi-agent environments. In the standard secretary problem, a sequence of arbitrary awards arrive online, in a random order, and a single decision maker makes an immediate and irrevocable decision whether to accept each award upon its arrival. The requirement to make immediate decisions arises in many cases due to an implicit assumption regarding competition. Namely, if the decision maker does not take the offered award immediately, it will be taken by someone else. We introduce a novel multi-agent secretary model, in which the competition is explicit. In our model, multiple agents compete over the arriving awards, but the decisions need not be immediate; instead, agents may select previous awards as long as they are available (i.e., not taken by another agent). If an award is selected by multiple agents, ties are broken either randomly or according to a global ranking. This induces a multi-agent game in which the time of selection is not enforced by the rules of the games, rather it is an important component of the agent's strategy. We study the structure and performance of equilibria in this game. For random tie breaking, we characterize the equilibria of the game, and show that the expected social welfare in equilibrium is nearly optimal, despite competition among the agents. For ranked tie breaking, we give a full characterization of equilibria in the 3-agent game, and show that as the number of agents grows, the winning probability of every agent under non-immediate selections approaches her winning probability under immediate selections.

Resumen
Gas path analysis (GPA) is a powerful tool to predict gas turbine degradations based on measurement parameters of gas turbine engines. Accordingly, prudent measurement selections are crucial to ensure accurate GPA predictions. This paper is intended to investigate the influence of measurement parameter selection towards the effectiveness of GPA algorithm. An analytical methodology for measurement selection, combined with measurement subset concept, is developed to properly select measurements for multiple component fault diagnosis. The effectiveness of GPA using the measurement sets selected with the introduced measurement selection method are then compared to the results of using standard measurements installed on existing gas turbine engines. A case study applying the new measurement selection method to GPA diagnostic analysis is demonstrated on a 3-shaft aero-derivative industrial gas turbine model based on similar unit installed onboard an offshore platform operated by PETRONAS. The engine is modeled and simulated using PYTHIA, a gas turbine performance and diagnostics analysis tool developed by Cranfield University. To validate the findings, non-linear GPA prediction errors are evaluated in various cases of single and multi components faults. As a result, the selected measurements have successfully produced much superior diagnostics accuracies in the fault cases when compared to the standard measurements. These findings proved that proper measurement selection for better GPA diagnostic analysis can be achieved by using the proposed analytical methods. Several engine sensor enhancements are also discussed to accommodate the unique sensor requirements for health diagnostics using GPA.

Resumen
The rise of algorithmic decision making led to active researches on how to define and guarantee fairness, mostly focusing on one-shot decision making. In several important applications such as hiring, however, decisions are made in multiple stage with additional information at each stage. In such cases, fairness issues remain poorly understood. In this paper we study fairness in k-stage selection problems where additional features are observed at every stage. We first introduce two fairness notions, local (per stage) and global (final stage) fairness, that extend the classical fairness notions to the k-stage setting. We propose a simple model based on a probabilistic formulation and show that the locally and globally fair selections that maximize precision can be computed via a linear program. We then define the price of local fairness to measure the loss of precision induced by local constraints; and investigate theoretically and empirically this quantity. In particular, our experiments show that the price of local fairness is generally smaller when the sensitive attribute is observed at the first stage; but globally fair selections are more locally fair when the sensitive attribute is observed at the second stage – hence in both cases it is often possible to have a selection that has a small price of local fairness and is close to locally fair.

Resumen
Abstract Freeform surface features are often machined with multiple operations. The geometry, tools, and cutting parameters of these operations have to be determined during process planning. In this paper, strategies and algorithms to decompose a freeform surface feature into multiple operations, which include roughing (facing and end milling), finishing, tapering, and corner rounding, are presented. For each operation, tool and parameter selections are based on minimizing machining time with the constraints of the specified roughness, tolerance, and machine tool safety. Geometry decompositions are based on the selected tools and the surface slope for the purpose of improving the cutting efficiency. Methods to control the quality requirements (roughness and tolerance) and to estimate the total machining time are also developed. In addition, the manufacturability of freeform surface features is discussed.

Resumen
Automation is becoming an integral part of our daily lives as technology and techniques rapidly develop. Many automation workflows are now routinely being applied within the geoscience domain. The basic structure of automation and its success of modelling fundamentally hinges on the appropriate choice of parameters and speed of processing. The entire process demands that the data being fed into any machine learning model is essentially of good quality. The technological advances in well logging technology over decades have enabled the collection of vast amounts of data across wells and fields. This poses a major issue in automating petrophysical workflows. It necessitates to ensure that, the data being fed is appropriate and fit for purpose. The selection of features (logging curves) and parameters for machine learning algorithms has therefore become a topic at the forefront of related research. Inappropriate feature selections can lead erroneous results, reduced precision and have proved to be computationally expensive. Experienced Eye (EE) is a novel methodology, derived from Domain Transfer Analysis (DTA), which seeks to identify and elicit the optimum input curves for modelling. During the EE solution process, relationships between the input variables and target variables are developed, based on characteristics and attributes of the inputs instead of statistical averages. The relationships so developed between variables can then be ranked appropriately and selected for modelling process. This paper focuses on three distinct petrophysical data scenarios where inputs are ranked prior to modelling: prediction of continuous permeability from discrete core measurements, porosity from multiple logging measurements and finally the prediction of key geomechanical properties. Each input curve is ranked against a target feature. For each case study, the best ranked features were carried forward to the modelling stage, and the results are validated alongside conventional interpretation methods. Ranked features were also compared between different machine learning algorithms: DTA, Neural Networks and Multiple Linear Regression. Results are compared with the available data for various case studies. The use of the new feature selection has been proven to improve accuracy and precision of prediction results from multiple modelling algorithms.

Resumen
Herbicide selection is key to efficiently managing nuisance vegetation in our nation’s waterways. After selecting the active ingredient, there still remains multiple proprietary and generic products to choose from. Recent small-scale research has been conducted to compare the efficacy of these herbicides against floating and emergent species. Therefore, a series of mesocosm and growth chamber trials were conducted to evaluate subsurface applications of the following herbicides against submersed plants: diquat versus coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum L.), hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata L.f. Royle), southern naiad (Najas guadalupensis (Sprengel) Magnus), and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.); flumioxazin versus coontail, hydrilla, and Eurasian watermilfoil; and triclopyr against Eurasian watermilfoil. All active ingredients were applied at concentrations commonly used to manage these species in public waters. Visually, all herbicides within a particular active ingredient performed similarly with regard to the onset and severity of injury symptoms throughout the trials. All trials, except diquat versus Eurasian watermilfoil, resulted in no differences in efficacy among the 14 proprietary and generic herbicides tested, and all herbicides provided 43%–100% control, regardless of active ingredient and trial. Under mesocosm and growth chamber conditions, the majority of the generic and proprietary herbicides evaluated against submersed plants provided similar control.

Resumen
As stormwater regulations for hydrologic and water quality control become increasingly stringent, Department of Defense (DoD) facilities are faced with the daunting task of complying with multiple laws and regulations. This often requires facilities to plan, design, and implement structural best management practices (BMPs) to capture, filter, and/or infiltrate runoff—requirements that can be complicated, contradictory, and difficult to plan. This project demonstrated the Stormwater Management Optimization Toolbox (SMOT), a spreadsheet-based tool that effectively analyzes and plans for compliance to the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 pre-hydrologic conditions through BMP implementation, resulting in potential cost savings by reducing BMP sizes while simultaneously achieving compliance with multiple objectives. SMOT identifies the most cost-effective modeling method based on an installation’s local conditions (soils, rainfall patterns, drainage network, and regulatory requirements). The work first demonstrated that the Model Selection Tool (MST) recommendation accurately results in the minimum BMP cost for 45 facilities of widely varying climatic and regional conditions, and then demonstrated SMOT at two facilities.
