Navigational information is of great significance to the safety of maritime navigation. To better guarantee navigator safety and improve navigation efficiency, an applied model of geographic information services (GI services) that consists of an operational architecture, several subsystems and multiple GI services is presented. This work is an e-navigation testbed that follows e-navigation technical architecture and integrates a large amount of navigation-related resources. In this paper, we propose and evaluate methods for the local navigation using only visual perception for the skiing robot. Our skiing robot, capable of skiing using the carving technique, has no direct control on the velocity of skiing as it cannot break or accelerate, therefore well known navigation methods for nonholonomic mobile robots cannot be directly applied. We consider the following methods: an intuitive method of aiming at the closest gates, a human obstacle avoidance movement model, neural networks learning from a set of human demonstrations, and a global method that uses a predefin

Abstract One of the most important concepts concerning the safety of navigation is the ship domain. The maritime domain is one of the oldest domains, which preceded the ones used in aviation, railway industry, chemical industry and medical. Through the concept of a ship domain is to be understood a certain area around the vessel, which the navigator wants to keep free of other fixed and moving objects. Navigational situation can be considered safe as long as no other ship neither any navigational obstacle would not exceed the area. In order to build and develop methods to assess the safety of

New objective computer-based measures of navigational accuracy and situational awareness (SA) were developed. Assumptions concerning the central terrestrial gravitational field and the normality of errors of the on-board navigation measurements with known constant variability were introduced in the studies. Abstract In the 21st century marine navigation has become dominated by satellite positioning systems and automated navigational processes. Today, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) play a central role in the process of carrying out basic navigational tasks, e.g. determining the coordinates of a vessel’s position at sea. Since satellite systems are being used increasingly more often in everyday life, the signals they send are becoming more and more prone to jamming. Therefore there is a need to search for other positioning systems and methods that would be as accurate and fast as the ex

Thirty-two driver-subjects of both genders, and wide ranges of age (18-73) and driving experience (2,000 to 40,000 miles per year) navigated along public roadways for this research using a specially instrumented automobile. A variety of different roadway conditions were also used for this research including limited access four-lane highways, two-lane state routes, and city streets.

Often, these tasks include traversing indoor environments where radio links are unreliable, hindering the use of remote pilot links or ground-based control, and effectively eliminating Global Positioning System (GPS) signals as a potential localization method. As a result, any vehicle capable of indoor flight must be able to stabilize itself and perform all guidance, navigation, and control tasks with

Autonomous land vehicles (ALVs) have received considerable attention after their introduction into military and commercial applications. ALVs still stand as a challenging research topic. One of the main problems arising in ALV operations is the navigation accuracy while the other is the dynamic effects of road irregularities which may prevent the vehicle and its cargo to function properly. In this thesis, we propose intelligent solutions to these two basic problems of ALV. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has over the last years become an increasingly prevalent technology in several sectors of modern society. Many UAVs are today used in a wide series of applications, from disaster relief to surveillance. A recent initiative by the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) aims to implement UAVs in their emergency response. By quickly deploying drones to an area of interest, an assessment can be made, prior to personnel getting there, thus saving time and increasing the likelihood of a successful rescue operation.
