Texto completoToday a lot of people choose to sit in cafés or other public places for work or meetings, but few of these places are suited for this. In my thesis I work with furniture for these places and needs. This report, which is a part of the thesis, describes our new work habits and why they have surged. This involves changes in work organization, digital development and various factors that attract people to places between work and leisure. A design project was conducted in collaboration with the arcitect firm Code Concept Development aimed at the restaurant Urban Deli and their new location at Sveavägen 44 in Stockholm. The result is a proposal with tables and chairs designed to be flexible and create possibilities for change in a place where a variety of activities are taking place.

Texto completoBased on theories and the discourse of sustainable urban development and social sustainability, this thesis explores the socio-economic qualities of public meeting spaces. The socially and economically deprived suburban housing area Kroksbäck, situated in the Southwestern parts of Malmö, Sweden, is with its existing and suggested meeting spaces the focus area of the analysis. Through theory and literature about social sustainability, meeting spaces, public space/place, territoriality, the neighbourhood, and the community, normative principles are created to function as a tool for this socio-economic analysis. In the chapter that makes up the status report, a housing area that is struggling with socio-economic insufficiencies, a lack of meeting spaces, service, and commercial activities is depicted. Since the adjacent and high-profile area Hyllie centrumområde is now nearly completed after many years of planning and construction work, Kroksbäck has gotten a new central location and has become attractive for entrepreneurs to start to develop. This has resulted in two urban development proposals, where Kroksbäck is presented as urban, commercial and safe, which is a vision far from today’s reality. In order to adapt the plans to the area and the people living here, a pilot study of a project intended to strengthen Kroksbäck’s socio-economic qualities is presented in this thesis. By supporting and facilitating social sustainability, the economy at large will benefit from the outcomes of better social relations and cohesion. The local expertise of the people living in Kroksbäck is made use of while at the same time involving different local stakeholders in the project Meet your Kroksbäck!, which is based on participatory methods and intended to be utilized in the development of the area and its new meeting spaces. The project is also intended to heighten the self-esteem and social cohesion of the locals living in Kroksbäck. When the new meeting space is created, in a later stage, it will help to promote interaction between people, strengthen social networks and the local economy, and make the area more lively and enjoyable to live in and to visit.

Texto completoDesigning physical environments for people and their requirements have been researched about and architects have been experimented with this particular subject for many years. A public space is anywhere people are and can for example mean parks, walkways, squeres etcetera, to the smallest useable artefacts in the form of traditional benches. Artefacts are the parts in att public space that have any kind of designed function that is meant for being used in a specific way and people find other different ways it can be used as. Those artefacts in public spaces do affect people in different ways. Aspects and conditions becomes a sequence to how and why people use a space more or less another one day to another. That is the cause to how and why pople choose to use a specificpublic space by specific occasions beacuase of personal reasons. In my thesis I have done a reaserch about the interaction between architecture, its artefacts and people social life. How and why pople are affected by artefacts in the public spaces and why they want to stay there. The thesis focus on all generations and ages of people and cultural groups. In one part of the thesis there will be more focused and discussed part about an aspect about teenagers appropriation in the choosen public space. I concider that a place should be available for all people, all year, the entire day and night but I have at the same time been awere of that that is not totaly possiple to implement but I want there to be an open mind for the thought of it. In the thesis i did look for a concrete answer as a final result for the study but in the study the aim is to bring up how architects can use this kind of study in the future, from my chosen methods, can use this method to study likewise future studies for new public spaces to come. I chose to do the research about the phenomena in a square which is a traditional urban environment but there are no rules for how a public space or meeting space should look like.

Texto completoMeetings in urban spaces is a thesis in information design with emphasis on spatial design. The aim of this thesis is to is to examine how poorly utilised spaces in urban environments can become more useful, as well as which criteria are required to enable a pleasant stay in these locations. The object of the study is the terrace outside Stockholm Public Library which, due to its current appearance and lack of function, most of the time is unused and deserted. The study’s aim is to generate a design proposal that encourages an increase in the flow of people to the terraces and that makes people want to spend more of their time there. The goal is to get more visitors to appreciate the terraces and utilise the space better. From the results of collected empirical data through spatial analysis, observations, notations of movement, interviews and discussions it has become clear that the reason for the terraces being unused is a lack of functionality and the spaces appearance. The conclusion of the theoretical and practical studies about spatiality, shape, urban public spaces and cognitive psychology etc., show that the choice of shape and placement of spatial elements can contribute to people choosing to linger on the library terraces. In its turn, this knowledge can create the right conditions for a changed pattern of movement and a greater flow of people to the location. A design proposal was created, based on theories and empirical data presented in the study. The aim design proposal is to show how it may be possible to draw visitors’ attention to the terraces and create a more natural flow there. This may be achieved by adding round shapes and curved lines, more variety in shape and proportion and by creating more obvious functions that meet visitors’ needs of activity and aesthetics. While this study is focused on the terraces of Stockholm Public Library it is my hope that these conclusions may also be applicable to similar environments in other location.

Texto completoInternet has been transformed. The new Internet, Web 2.0, is all about interactivity, communication and conversations. Citizens and stakeholders demand transparency and influence. The individuals that contribute their knowledge and views demand insight into how their contribution is used to develop the organization, or they leave the conversation. At the same time the Swedish parliament requires improved efficiency, availability and access to government services. Previous research shows there is a trend towards issue arenas where issues and topics, not organizations, are at the center of communication. The emergence of e-government represents a paradigm shift, from emphasizing standardization and cost-efficiency, to an emphasis on coordinated network building, external collaboration, and customer services. This transformation from bureaucracy to networked governance requires new strategies. To explore these trends and phenomena research interviews have been conducted with representatives for three Swedish government agencies. The empirical findings have then been illuminated with neo-institutional theory and analyzed with governance and communication strategy concepts and theories. The findings show that the three agencies have taken some small steps toward the virtual issue arenas. Some employees participate in social media, but the participation isn’t formalized and knowledge isn’t aggregated within the organizations. The general knowledge of social media is low and there seems to be institutionalized myths affecting the decision environment. Management consists of members of similar age. Top management from different agencies in the sector frequently meets, and the agencies await and follow the other agencies examples. The new e-logic challenges existing power structures, as well as the myth of authority, since external actors gain power over business development. In order to fully participate in the conversation in virtual issue arenas, a change in organizational culture is likely needed, and potentially generational change might be necessary to facilitate the change in culture. Engaging in a few, carefully selected e-projects will enable the agencies to learn and expand the engagement gradually. The accumulated experience may lead to a change in the institutionalized myths, thus enabling the predicted paradigm shift.
